UCC holds rallies, calls for sanctions against Ukraine TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The Ukrainian prime minister’s resignation this week and parliament’s repeal of anti-protest laws that sparked violent clashes between protestors and police is hopeful, but doesn’t go far enough to resolve Ukraine’s political crisis, the UkrainianCanadian Congress argues. The concessions to protesters leave unresolved the opposition’s repeated demands for President Viktor Yanukovych to resign and a new election to be held. n the snowy hills of Banff, Alberta, there are only two Chinese restaurants – neither of which Christina Chong has any intention of visiting any time soon. The East York native will be spending her first ever Chinese New Year away from Toronto. She moved to Banff three months ago for a coveted job at an accounting firm – and so far she doesn’t expect the Chinese atmosphere to be quite as authentic as Toronto’s. The 23-year-old usually spends the holiday listening to her vivacious uncle Gary order a traditional eight dish meal to their round table , usually at one of many suitable restaurants in the Richmond Hill-Markham area – one of the Toronto area’s five hot spots for Chinese immigrants and exceptional

Student, 7, gets gold for acing RCM exam CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke violinist Rosanna Scopacasa was recently presented with the Royal Conservatory of Music’s provincial gold medal for scoring top marks on her Grade 1 violin exam. Rosanna, a Grade 1 student at St. Gregory Catholic School who just turned seven, said the exam was a tough one. “It was hard and some songs were really fast and fun, and had all this fancy fingering,” she said. “I even made a mistake, but I still got the gold medal. It made me feel really proud.” Rosanna’s parents, Sal and Shirley, first enrolled their daughter in preschool music programs when she was just a toddler, and by the time she was four, decided to sign her up for violin lessons on the advice of her music teachers. Today, in addition to her twiceweekly violin lessons through the Etobicoke Suzuki Music School and daily practice sessions at home, Rosanna is also a member of the

Young Voices Toronto Children’s Choir. “She’s always shown a keen interest in music, and she really seems to enjoy the violin, which is very important to us. She takes a lot of enjoyment from playing the songs and putting on little concerts for our family and friends,” said Sal, who himself played the accordion as a child. “We think music is important in the early development of children. Music is just another language that children can explore and develop.” As for Rosanna’s most recent accomplishment, Shirley said both she and her husband are “so very, very proud” of all she’s been able to achieve at such a young age. Rosanna received her gold medal,

plus a certificate for achieving “first class honours with distinction” on her Grade 1 violin exam at a ceremony Jan. 12 at Koerner Hall, in The Royal Conservatory’s TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning. “We’re so happy that she has this talent. It’s just amazing,” Shirley said. “I’m amazed and I’m in awe.” But despite all her recent accolades, Sal said he and Shirley are committed to keeping their young daughter grounded. “We try to let her know that these type of awards are achieved through hard work, dedication and commitment to practicing and playing. We just hope it doesn’t get to her head,” he laughed. “She’s pretty good, so we’re kind of preaching the importance of being grounded.” As for Rosanna, she’s not letting her violin talent stand in the way of pursuing her other dreams. “When I grow up I want to be an artist, a violinist, a pianist, a dancer, and a singer – oh, and a doctor, too,” she said.

Local musicians score young Famous PEOPLE Players celebrates composer awards from EPO milestone with celebrity guests

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

An Etobicoke School of the Arts music student was among the big winners at the Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra’s (EPO) inaugural Young Composers Competition. Fifteen-year-old Blaise Gratton, a Bloor West resident, took home the prize for Promising High School Composer Wednesday, Jan. 22 for his piece Tritones and Semitones, which he wrote over two months specifically for the competition. “It was a great feeling, of course, when I found out I won. I was really happy,” Blaise, who began playing tuba for the EPO in September, said at the Young Composers Competition awards reception at Westmount Gallery. “I started playing at a very young age and I’ve pretty much always loved music.” Launched by the EPO last year, the Young Composers Competition was an initiative Jessica Monk and her husband Chris Van Loan hoped might help to encourage youth creation of classical orchestral music. Both members of the 60-piece EPO – Monk is the orchestra’s principal bass player and member of the EPO board, and Van Loan is a violinist – Monk said the couple recently began thinking “how hard it must be for composers to have their work listened to.” “So we thought it would be a fun thing to do to create an opportunity for young composers by hosting a Canada-wide competition,” said Monk, who also acted as chair of the Young Composers Competition. By the time the competition closed in November, Monk said the EPO had 19 submissions from young musicians aged 32 and under from all across Canada – each of which was judged blindly by volunteer judges. They were all “quite pleased with the overall quality of the compositions,”

The Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra announced the winners of its inaugural Young Composers Competition at a reception at Westmount Gallery. The winners are (L-R): Etobicoke School of the Arts’ Blaise Gratton, 15, for Promising High School Composer; Grand Prize Winner Isaias Garcia, 23, a fourth-year undergrad music student at York University; and Runner-Up Sean King, 26, a University of Toronto grad with a Masters of Music in Composition.

Monk said, noting that none of them had any idea who or how old each of the composers was until the judging process was complete.

When I was in high school, I was still improving on my English, because my first language was Spanish. So music was essentially my universal language – the way I could communicate with everyone else. – Isaias Garcia

While Blaise took home the $500 Promising High School Composer prize – 90 per cent of which he intends to save towards his university tuition – this year’s runner-up was Sean King, a 26-year-old University of Toronto grad who earned his Masters in Music Composition. He takes home $1,000 in prize money

for his composition, Demon Dance. And EPO’s ultimate Grand Prize winner of this year’s inaugural Young Composers Competition was 23-year-old York University undergrad Isaias Garcia, for his piece entitled Polish Rhapsody. Born in Canada, Garcia grew up in Argentina before moving back to Toronto at age 11. While he didn’t pick up an instrument until high school, it was under the tutelage of Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton’s Andrzej Rozbicki – who would go on to become Garcia’s “greatest influence” – that music quickly became his outlet. “When I was in high school, I was still improving on my English, because my first language was Spanish,” he said. “So music was essentially my universal language – the way I could communicate with everyone else.” Now f l u e n t i n b o t h English and a whole host of instruments – including the clarinet, piano and saxophone – Garcia is a member

of Rozbicki’s Celebr ity Symphony Orchestra, and plans to continue on with his musical education at York in the university’s Masters of Composition program upon his graduation later this year. In addition to the $2,000 in prize money, Garcia will also enjoy having his composition, Polish Rhapsody, receive a full public orchestral performance by the EPO at its upcoming Old World, New World, Out of This World Concert Friday, April 11, 8 p.m., at Martingrove Collegiate Institute, 50 Winterton Dr. “I’m really excited about that aspect. For a young composer like myself, it’s a great experience to hear your music performed – not only for the fact that it’s being recognized, but you also get an enormous amount of feedback from the musicians themselves,” he said. “I think that’s the most invaluable thing you can learn.”

In celebration of Chinese New Year

F

riday marks the start of the year 4712 in the Chinese lunar calendar, and there’s plenty of celebrations slated in and around Toronto over the coming days to help welcome the Year of the Horse. In our special feature in today’s paper, we’ve outlined some of the events local residents can attend while also taking a look at the history and traditions surrounding Chinese New Year. Find out more by visiting our events calendar online at bit.ly/torontocalendar The Chinese zodiac is made up of 12 animal signs, each representing a certain year, which repeats every 12. The Year of the Horse, which begins tomorrow, is in 2014 and will come again in 2026. The other 11 animal signs are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Last year was the Year of the Snake, and 2015 will be the Year of the Sheep. our view Each animal sign also has certain traits associated to those Friday marks born in that particular year. For example, those born in the start of Year Year of the Horse are said to be and seeking of indepenof the Horse restless dence, along with being good with money. Being able to not only learn about, but actually take part in the many different cultural celebrations in our city each year is one of the great things about living in Toronto. We urge local residents to take some time to seek out at least one Chinese New Year event. If you are of Chinese descent, you’re probably going anyway and if you’re not, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about one of Toronto’s largest cultural groups while also having fun. And if you go, send us a photo: contactus@insidetoronto.com How Toronto’s Chinese community grew from the first recorded resident, Sam Ching in 1878, to what it is today also provides an interesting look at changing attitudes and policies both in our city and across the country toward immigration. The Greater Toronto Area is now home to hundreds of thousands of immigrants of Chinese descent. Toronto has a number of areas with large concentrations of Chinese businesses and attractions including both downtown’s Chinatown and Chinatown East at Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street. Also, the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto is in Scarborough.

Who are the real victims in the Ford saga?

W

atching Rob Ford the past week and a bit brings to mind nothing so much as a prize-fighter, bleeding from the ears and spitting teeth as he hangs on the ropes nursing a couplethree broken ribs, telling his manager before the last round starts: “Don’t worry. I’ve got him right where I want him.” It’s an absurd place to be for the mayor of Canada’s largest city. A full week ago, a broken elevator helped ensure Ford arrived late to deliver a lunch speech at the Economic Club of Canada – so late, that the club is offering refunds to its attendees. On Monday night, the mayor arrived on time to the Toronto Region Board of Trade’s annual dinner – uninvited. He reportedly sat down at the back of the room, and partway through a speech by Board of Trade President Carol

david nickle the city Wilding filled with implied criticism, left. Earlier that day, he complained to the media that his own executive committee had “stabbed” him “in the back,” and that was why he dare not tell anyone about his plans to cut taxes in this week’s budget debate. Ford the victim? On that, and other things too, Ford appears to be conceding tactical defeats. In so doing, he paints himself as a victim of Toronto’s undemocratic elites. The ‘little people,’ Ford no doubt hopes, will take umbrage on his behalf. It’ll be a neat trick if he can pull it off. Because the fact is that Ford is a wealthy label-

making heir, who has spent the past year or more overreaching even that lofty privilege. He’s used his office to benefit his family’s business and his football coaching hobby – admitted to using hard drugs and being in a “drunken stupor” – and subjected those he identifies as enemies to slanderous and unfounded attacks. All of which has opened both Ford and the city to the sharp-tongued ridicule of the world. In reality, Toronto’s ‘elites’ such as they are have become as much a victim in this scenario as Ford has made himself. dishonest narrative But never mind that. As the mayor sets himself up for more body-blows, leading with his jaw, he reinforces his own dishonest narrative that he is the only one willing to fight for the interests of Torontonians in

a city “addicted to spending.” He will not acknowledge that any of his policies have driven up the cost to taxpayers. culture of entitlement He will not acknowledge that the “culture of entitlement” he has fought at city hall is in fact a culture whose boundaries he has in fact pushed. He will simply continue to push at the much narrower boundaries that Toronto council established for him last year when they removed many of his powers and resources, and do so until voters pass judgement in October. And then, he and the rest of the city will see: whether he has it where he wants it, or not.

Tejai Hamilton’s university applications four years from now will boast a credential few can claim. The Grade 8 Humberwood D ow n s Ju n i o r M i d d l e Academy student was recently named one of seven Toronto students to win NASA’s 2013 Cassini Scientist for a Day International Edition essaywriting contest. The challenge charges students with researching Saturn and two of its moons, lapetus and Dione, then writing an essay to argue which target’s image will yield the best scientific results. International edition winners included 23 students from Canada, Brazil, Morocco and Pakistan. Cassini spacecraft is nearing its 10th anniversary exploring Saturn, yielding data that improves scientists’ understanding not only of the Saturn system, but of processes that influence the formation of planets, rings and moons everywhere, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reports. Tejai, 13, wrote in favour of Saturn’s moon, Dione, the smallest of the three targets. “It can be determined that Dione has much to be discovered, though being the underdog in this contest,” Tejai wrote in his winning essay. “You would have easy patience observing and analyzing due to the predictable orbit patterns as it speeds up or slows down around Saturn. This gives the probe time to snap pictures and feedback to NASA as they try to exclaim what’s going on.” Further, Tejai reported

Humberwood Downs Junior Middle Academy student Tejai Hamilton has just won an award for NASA’s Cassini Scientist for a Day essay contest.

Dione behaves similar to Earth’s moon. He drew an analogy for NASA scientists between choosing Dione, and consumers remaining loyal to their cable company. His humour was a way, he said, to make his work stand out from the hundreds of entries, most from high school students who may have studied Saturn. Sitting in his principal Beverley Muir’s office this week recalling his win, one word sprang to mind – “dumbfounded”. Richelle Paesano, Tejai’s Grade 8 all-boys homeroom teacher, recently told her class she had received an email from an organization with an acronym as its name. One student guessed it was from NASA. The classroom exploded with excitement. “I don’t like being the centre of attention. The core of the emotion in the room was focused on me. Everyone started cheering. I was dumbfounded,” Tejai recalled. “It’s such a moment of celebration. Celebrate it, Tejai,”

Paesano tells him. Tejai is the only winner in the Grade 7-8 category in all of Canada. Paesano had learned of the contest through the school board’s Direct Line, an internal posting of upcoming initiatives, events and contests. “It seemed a wonderful way to give the kids an opportunity to take initiative, to own their own learning,” Paesano said. “Tejai goes home, cracks out an essay and submits it. This fellow has a very curious mind. I’m not surprised he won.” Tejai’s fellow contest award-winners from Toronto are: Emily Buchan of Davisville Junior Public School; Michael Cheng of Claude Watson School for the Arts; Sarah Mari of Banting and Best Public School; Rainbow Chen and Henry Lin of Earl Haig Secondary School and Tiffany Bhikram of Riverdale Collegiate Institute.

Hearing loss triples risk of falling According to a recent study conducted at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Hearing Loss is closely associated with an increased risk of falling. Johns Hopkins researchers analyzed data from more than 2,000 people ages 40 to 69 who took part in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The participants had their hearing tested and answered questions about whether they had a fall in the past year. The study found that people with a 25-decibel hearing loss (classified as mild hearing loss) were nearly three times more likely to have a history of falling than those with no hearing loss. Every additional 10 decibels of hearing loss meant an increased 1.4-fold risk of falling, meaning that a person with just a moderate hearing loss would be six times more likely to suffer a fall. The findings held after the researchers accounted for other factors linked with falling, such as age, sex, race, heart disease and balance.

Hearing Aids When you purchase one hearing aid at Trillium Hearing you will receive the second at 1/2 price!*

Improve your balance by treating your hearing loss.

According to the study author, Dr. Frank Lin an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School, “People with impaired hearing don’t have good awareness of their overall environment, which makes them more likely to trip and fall”. “It might also be that with hearing loss, the brain becomes overwhelmed by the demands on its limited resources”, Lin suggested. Repeated studies have demonstrated that healthy hearing

is closely related to good overall health, and that this is especially true for older adults. To learn more about your personal hearing needs, please contact your nearest Trillium Hearing Centre.

Tokens go a long way to helping kids Youth Without Shelter gears up for annual Tokens4Change fundraiser How to get involved

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com “A token gesture can change everything.” Not only is that the motto behind this year’s Feb. 7 Tokens4Change event benefiting Etobicoke’s Youth Without Shelter (YWS), but it also sums up how a campaign that began as a “pet project” for Salar and Meggie Javid has exploded over the last four years – spreading awareness and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars towards youth homelessness. “The whole idea behind Tokens4Change in the beginning was just to collect donations of tokens at TTC stations to help the youth at the shelter get access to transportation – but it has grown quickly to become a lot more than that,” Salar Javid said. “One of our major, major objectives, and a triple bottom line, was that we wanted to make sure that we involved the youth in the community and the people in the community to do more than just fundraise – we wanted to raise awareness about youth homelessness.” It all began in the summer of 2009. Meggie, Javid said, had just relocated to Toronto from Calgary, where she had been heavily involved in social justice work at a number of different shelters. Together, the couple decided to continue Meggie’s good work here in Toronto’s shelter system and sought out the advice of Javid’s best friend, Scott Parish, who was then a member of the YWS board. “We started thinking about how we could help the shelter, and at the time, it was all about helping and making sure they could get enough volunteers – but then we had an epiphany that we could organize a fundraising event,” Javid said, noting that, from the very beginning, the trio was committed to getting young people involved. “And one of the ways we

Tokens4Change event is on Feb. 7, with students collecting tokens and change at subway stations to help Youth Without Shelter. thought that would be achievable was through the arts.” And so for the last four years, the Tokens4Change campaign has called on artists such as Naomi Tessler, founder and artistic director of Branch Out Theatre, to help engage local high school students in different arts projects – each one aimed at exploring the issues surrounding youth homelessness. This year, for example, Tessler is working on a theatre project with a group of students from Havergal College, while other artists will be working on film, visual arts and dance projects at several other local schools. “Each of these projects give the students a chance to use their talents and their voices to raise awareness about issues surrounding youth homelessness, while also giving them the chance to go a little bit deeper and to really

explore the issue on a level that really develops empathy and compassion,” she said, noting that she’s working on a series of tableaus with the Havergal students.

...that very small donation, whether it be financial or in the form of a token, really allows the youth to pass out of homelessness... – Judy Leroux. YWS

“They’re basically live frozen pictures; a slide show to explore a journey that a youth might have taken to move from a situation where they were in a toxic environment to get to the shelter, and to receive the support and to thrive in that shelter environment.” Then, come Feb. 7, the

Havergal students, along with student groups from across the city – including Etobicoke’s Martingrove Collegiate, Father John Redmond and Humber College – will go underground to present their artistic offerings to TTC commuters in exchange for freewill offerings of TTC tokens and change they hope will help build a brighter future for their homeless peers in Etobicoke. 200 student participants This year, the 200 or so students expected to participate will be joined by a number of corporate groups who have begun signing up to volunteer their employees’ time. For David Mielke and the FileBank team, the Tokens4Change event offers twofold benefits: “We think it’s a wonderful opportunity to have that team-building

experience, while also helping an excellent organization in our community,” said Mielke, who is also chair of the YWS board. Last year, the FileBank team rallied 18 of their 50 employees to participate, taking over College Station for the day of the event. The experience, Mielke said, was so rewarding, that the vast majority of those original company volunteers have signed up again this year – some for even double and triple shifts. And it’s not too late to join them. According to Judy Leroux, YWS development manager, there’s still time for more volunteers to come forward for this year’s Friday. Feb. 7 event. Tokens4Change, she added, really can change lives – one token at a time. “The messaging that every-

n Commuters looking to donate to the cause need not look any further than the following TTC stations and PATH locations, where student and corporate volunteers will be out in full force all day on Friday, Feb. 7: Bathurst, Bloor-Yonge, College, Don Mills, Downsview, Dundas, Eglinton, Finch, Islington, King, Osgoode, Queen, Queen’s Park, Sheppard-Yonge, Spadina, St. Andrew, St. Clair, St. George and St. Patrick stations, and along the PATH at Brookfield Place, Bay Adelaide Centre, and Sheraton Hotel. n There will also be an opportunity to check out all of the student performances at one location – the ING Direct Cafe, 221 Yonge St. – at noon. Hosted by Ennis Esmer (The Listener), the Tokens4Change show will feature performances by WIBI Acapella, students from Blyth Academy Lawrence Park, Crescent School and Havergal College, along with the UNITY Breakdancers. Boston Pizza will also be on-hand at the cafe from noon to 1 p.m. selling pizza slices for a $1 donation to YWS. n For more information about the event schedule, volunteer opportunities, or how to donate online, go to www.tokens4change.com one will see this year on the posters throughout the TTC is ‘A token gesture can change everything,’” she said. “That really sums it up, because that very small donation, whether it be financial or in the form of a token, really allows the youth to pass out of homelessness, because it provides them the resources to go look for a job, to go to school, to look for housing. For many of our youth, those are life-changing experiences.”

Fifty years of homecare in Toronto This year marks 50 years of publicly funded homecare in Toronto – caring for the people of our community. There have been many changes in the services provided over the years, but some things have come full circle. In 1964, when The Home Care Program for Metropolitan Toronto was founded, doctors still made house calls. The program’s aim was to reduce the pressure on hospital beds, and support people with short term care as they completed their recovery at home. In its first year of operation, 948 patients were cared for. Over the years, that original organization has evolved into the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (TC CCAC), funded by the Ontario government and one of 14 CCACs across the province. Last year, it cared for 46,039 people. While the focus of care today is typically on long-term supports that allow seniors to stay in their homes longer, clients of all ages receive care, including medically complex children and adults. The idea of homecare has expanded in 50 years. In 1985, the Home Care Program registered its first client with HIV/AIDS. This was still a time when much was still unknown about the disease and its transmission. The Home Care Program showed leadership in educating service pro-

viders and the medical community about the disease and those in need of care. In 1992, in partnership with Casey House, an AIDS hospice, the Home Hospice Program was launched. Today, the Toronto Central CCAC continues to value partnerships and leadership. Today it works in partnership with family doctors, hospitals, community services, EMS and others, creating integrated teams of healthcare providers who communicate with each other about their clients. Clients and their family caregivers are also seen as partners in care – new training for staff and service providers guides them in taking the time to lis-

ten to clients to find out what is most important to them. In fact, a recent survey found 87 per cent of Toronto Central CCAC clients reported overall satisfaction with their care. With an aging population, caring for people in their own home has never been more important. But with its long history of respect, compassion and innovation, home care in Toronto is ready for the challenges of the future. And one thing has come full circle: doctors are starting to make house calls again – often supported by Toronto Central CCAC staff and services.

Lack of new listings causes sales dip in first half of Jan. Transactions decline, average price rises Greater Toronto Area realtors reported 1,287 transactions through the TorontoMLS system during the first two weeks of 2014. This result was down by

approximately eight per cent compared to 1,396 sales reported during the same period in 2013. New listings entered into the system were down by a greater 20 per cent year-over-year. “The expectation is that home sales through the TorontoMLS System will be up

in 2014. This is because the cost of purchasing an average priced home, including mortgage payments, property taxes and utilities, will remain affordable for a household earning the average income in the GTA,” says Toronto Real Estate Board President Dianne Usher.

OPEN HOUSE FEB 1 & 2, 2-4 PM W2 81 85 75

“Aside from the fact that January sales from year-toyear tend to be volatile, the dip in sales during the first two weeks in January was likely due in large part to a lack of new listings. Quite simply, some would-be home buyers could not find a home that met their needs.”

The average selling price for the first 14 days of January 2014 was $515,990 – up by 12 per cent compared to the average price reported for the same timeframe in 2013. “The average selling price in the GTA will continue to trend upward in 2014,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager

of Market Analysis. “Listings will remain below the pre-recession peak and sales are expected to increase over 2013. This means that we will continue to see substantial competition between buyers for some home types and in some areas of the GTA.” – TREB

Feel Anxious or Embarrassed Do you dread the thought of having bad teeth, pain so terrible you can’t sleep, and a reluctance to ever show your smile in public but you still can’t get up the nerve to visit a dentist? I understand how that feels... I grew up with my share of teeth troubles and HATED going to the dentist. Once I became a dentist, I sought out the best secrets of melting away dental anxiety so you would NEVER have to feel that way I did. I’m the owner of Royal York Dental... a thriving West Toronto dental office and my team helps people who HATE dentists get unstuck and back onto a healthy path. We offer convenient, comfortable care (with sedation options if you’re anxious) and extended hours to accommodate you and your loved ones. Check out our web site to learn more. Nature’s Source: Skin detox bath Detoxification of your body through bathing is an ancient remedy that everyone can partake in the comfort of their home. The term “detox bath” is a modern buzzword in the health-conscious community. Your skin acts as the third kidney where toxins are excreted through sweating. A detox bath assists your body in eliminating toxins, absorbing minerals and nutrients that are in the water. Immediately after, you feel rejuvenated! Allow a one-hour timeslot when you take your bath. The first 20 minutes are used to help your body remove toxins, the following 20 minutes are for absorbing the minerals in the water and the last 20 minutes are for resting. Below are steps and ingredients you will need as you fill your tub with comfortably hot water: Add 1- 2 cups Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate): Soaking in Epsom Salts replenishes the body’s magnesium reserves. The sulfate

flushes toxins away and helps form proteins in brain tissue and joints. It calms the nervous system, relaxes muscles, reduces swelling, improves oxygen, boosts circulation and eases hypertension. Epsom salts baths have long been used for relief in rheumatism, diabetes, gout, skin disease and also helps in losing weight. They are inexpensive and can be bought here at Nature’s Source. Add 1 TBS – 1/3 cup ground ginger: This step is optional. Ginger can increase your heat levels, helping to sweat out toxins. Since it does heat your body it may cause your skin to turn slightly red for a few minutes so be careful the amount you add into your bath. Add 20 drops aromatherapy oil: This step is also optional. Aromatherapy have many therapeutic properties that many can take advantage of while sitting in a bath. Lavender or ylang ylang can make your bath very relaxing and pleasant. You may want to rather use tea

tree or eucalyptus essential oil to assist in detoxification process. Drink plenty of water: Before, during and after your bath, drink sufficient water as you will be sweating and need to re-hydrate. Also, you do not want to feel lightheaded or tired. After the bath, rub down your body with a loofah or bamboo bristle brush. Use long, gentle sweeping strokes, brushing towards the heart. This will stimulate the lymphatic system, helping to further release toxins out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Rest.

Days of Old Cloverdale’s Antique Market Staff photos/IAN KELSO

An old Kodak Duaflex camera was up for grabs at the monthly Antique Market held one Sunday each month at Cloverdale Mall.

Above, Bob Trimble is reflected in a mirror as he looks at an antique place setting while browsing the goods for sale at the show. Below left, Joan Simpson looks at a small bowl, while below right, Marianne Hill sets up her booth at the market in time for the shopping rush. Fear for family and friends in Ukraine prompted the Canadian-Ukrainians to attend Sunday’s rally then later head to a candlelight vigil inside St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox cathedral near Bathurst and Dundas streets. “Because the situation in Ukraine has recently escalated and there has been some tragedies, Canadian-Ukrainians felt motivated to come out and show support,” Ukrainian Canadian Congress organizer Olga Yatsetchko said Tuesday morning. News reports indicate violent protests have spread outside the capital city and across Ukraine, which gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Police have used smoke bombs, grenades and gunfire in attempts to control and silent protestors. Last week, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) issued an urgent call on the international community to censure Yanukovych for the violence and killings in Ukraine. The UCC further urged Canadians to contact Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Foreign Minister John Baird and their MPs to demand

action by Canada to stanch the bloodshed. A sample letter appears on the UCC website at bit.ly/1gkxmod “Canada must strongly condemn the deliberate beating and killing of protestors and journalists. The government of Ukraine and its leadership are to blame for this escalation,” UCC national president Paul Grod said in a statement. emergency debate When Canadian parliament resumed on Monday, MPs scheduled an emergency debate to condemn the Ukrainian government’s position in the ongoing crisis. Etobicoke Centre Conservative MP Ted Opitz, whose riding has a significant Ukrainian constituency, moved the motion to request the House of Commons debate. He accused the Ukrainian government of imposing martial law and using “lethal force to quash freedoms, violate human rights, and suspend the civil liberties of the people of Ukraine.” Prime Minister Harper expressed grave concern about Ukraine’s political leanings toward Russia in response to a question from NDP Leader Tom Mulcair about what actions Canada is taking to de-escalate and resolve the crisis. “We are very concerned that these actions speak of not moving toward a free and

democratic Euro-Atlantic future but very much toward an anti-democratic Soviet past,” Harper said. “This government has been very outspoken with many around the international community in condemning some of the actions of the Ukrainian government...We will continue to vocalize our concerns to work with the Ukrainian Canadian community and our allies to take all appropriate actions necessary to encourage the government of Ukraine to move in a positive direction.” Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird called the violent repression of protest and opposition in Ukraine “utterly deplorable,” and said Tuesday they will be immediately restricting entry to Canada for key Ukrainian government officials. Like Mulcair, Yatsetchko said Canadian-Ukrainians want to know what action the Canadian government is committed to take to resolve the political crisis in Ukraine. “Ideally, we want to see concrete actions from the prime minister and Canadian MPs. We believe the implementation of sanctions is the best and the only way to go.” - With files from Torstar News Service

Toronto school board takes ‘bold stance’ on dealing with youth mental health issues CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com All Toronto District School Board (TDSB) staff from principals and superintendents to teachers and lunchroom supervisors will now receive training on the foundations of mental health. It’s part of the board’s fouryear mental health strategic plan announced Tuesday morning at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts by TDSB Education Director Donna Quan. She also released statistics based on a recent student and parent census that found 73 per cent of students between grades 9 and 12 worry about their future, and more than one-third of high school students reported being under a lot of stress. Another concern is that the TDSB is aware of about 730 suicide attempts by students during the 2012-2013 academic year. “That’s why we’re taking a bold

stance. That’s why we’re taking a 365day approach to this,” Quan said. “We need to work with our agencies, our hospitals and our clinics to bridge the conversation before the students get there because by the time they get there it’s too late.” The TDSB strategy titled Healthy Schools. Healthy Relationships. Children and Youth Mental Health and Well-Being also includes the following commitments. * All schools will establish “mental health teams” responsible for facilitating student mental health and well-being in their schools. * Increase by 50 per cent the number of high schools engaged in anti-stigma initiatives by June 2014. * Expand and strengthen mental health partnerships to better meet system needs by enhancing supports for students and staff. * Enhance parental engagement and on-going communication between home and school.

“Your mental health matters to us and your mental health matters to our future,” said Quan, adding they need to bring students into the conversation as well. “This job belongs to all of us. Our plan is not an overnight solution.” Rosedale Heights staff and students are already working together for mental health and well-being through weekly yoga sessions led by the school’s guidance counsellor who is also a certified yoga instructor. There’s also a class focused on mental health taught by Cathy Sartory, the school’s mental health lead, who is working with a select group of students this year to develop a curriculum for incoming Grade 9 students. “It’s actually not that easy to be a human being,” she said. “We’re all riding the same boat and riding the same waves.”

Doctor, mom call for boost to mental health services Sunnybrook names Dr. Amy Cheung its first Bell Canada chair in adolescent mood, anxiety disorders LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Minutes after Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre psychiatrist Dr. Amy Cheung was named the first $1 million Bell Canada chair in adolescent mood and anxiety disorders, an Etobicoke mom took the stage to share her family’s tragic loss. Eva Siatkowski, a teacher at Havergal College private girls’ school, spoke of her son’s suicide more than nine years ago. Dan, 28, had been accepted to the University of Guelph’s veterinary program after taking some time to figure out his career path. “Within four to five weeks of starting his studies, he just mentally collapsed,” Siatkowski said, adding she believes her son had put all his energy into being

accepted to the highly competitive program so he was drained by the time classes began. Dan lost weight quickly and separated himself from others. He saw a psychologist several times and was scheduled to see a psychiatrist shortly before committing suicide but cancelled the appointment, without his family’s knowledge. ‘ran out of time’ “We knew he was sick and we were trying to get help for him,” Siatkowski said. “We ran out of time.” Dan’s family expressed their fears to a doctor that he wasn’t getting better but were advised to leave the situation to professionals, Siatkowski said. On Oct. 14, 2004, Dan

If 30 per cent of teenagers in Canada had kidney disease, you can bet we would be screening every teenager in every doctor’s office across the country for kidney disease. So why shouldn’t we be doing this for mental health? . –Dr. Amy Cheung

ended his life. Applauding Cheung’s work, Siatkowski said she believes her son might be alive today if there was more awareness of mental illness and services to help those suffering from it.

Donna Cansfield

“My mandate is to spread the word that mental illness is as honourable and deserving of attention as any serious physical illness,” she said at the Jan. 22 announcement at Sunnybrook. ‘discomfort’ “People have a discomfort with mental illness and this needs to change. It’s time, way past time, for awareness, understanding and compassion. The more we talk openly about it, the more we bring some honour to it.” As Bell Canada chair, Cheung, one of only a handful of child psychiatry researchers in Canada, will focus on making youth mental health a critical part of primary health care, improving the disjointed system of care and increas-

ing awareness of mental illness. Cheung is spearheading a study to test guidelines she developed. The guidelines prompt doctors and other primary health care workers to check on the mental health of their young patients as routinely as they consider their physical health. As many as 30 per cent of teens seeking medical attention have symptoms of depression, Cheung said. “Because of the stigma of mental illness, a teenager with depression can suffer for a year or longer in silence, visiting their doctor many times, talking about the physical manifestations of their illness like headaches and stomach aches and yet remain undiagnosed and unrecognized,” she said.

“If 30 per cent of teenagers in Canada had kidney disease, you can bet we would be screening every teenager in every doctor’s office across the country for kidney disease. So why shouldn’t we be doing this for mental health?” Two million Canadian youth are dealing with a mental health issue or addiction, Cheung said. “And sadly, for many of them, they will die from their illness through suicide,” she said. Cheung’s appointment came just days before Bell Canada’s fourth annual Let’s Talk Day Tuesday to raise money for mental health services. The Chinese find great symbolism in numbers Among zodiac signs, the horse is restless and the most misunderstood >>>from page 1 Celebrations will be held in all five Chinatowns in the Greater Toronto Area – home to more than 280,000 immigrants of Chinese descent. While at dinner, Chong’s cousin Jeffrey and his wife Fornita will hand Chong and her sister Gina red envelopes filled with cash – a tradition that brings immediate good fortune, though it’s meant to bring health and luck to those who receive them. “Not being able to go home and celebrate Chinese New Year with my family is going to be kind of sad,” Chong said. “We get together and catch up with everything. Not being able to do that is something I’m really going to miss. I’m going to give (my parents) a call and hopefully they’ll send me money.” Chinese New Year is considered a family reunion dinner. Toronto’s Walks and Bikes Tour guide Shirley Lum puts on a number of tours throughout the two week festivities. Some are food tours through Toronto’s downtown Chinatown which touch on some of the food traditions as well as cleaning rituals. “Between now and next Thursday is all of the frenzied cleaning up, dusting, getting your hair done already – I got mine done on Monday,” Lum said. Lum noted that it’s bad luck to cut or clean your hair on New Year’s Day. Any household cleaning must also be done prior to Jan. 31. “The 29th you have to stop doing cleaning and purging and stuff and the 30th is New Year’s Eve and you

shouldn’t be pitching out anything else at that point,” Lum said. This year, communities across the globe will be celebrating the lunar new Year of the Horse. They’ll decorate their homes in red to fend off evil spirits, and set off firecrackers for the same purpose. Lum noted that also important is symbolism in numbers. Usually at dinners there will be from eight to 12 dishes – eight being a very lucky number in Chinese culture. ZODIAC It’s ironic for Banff-based Chong, who was born the Year of the Horse, to be spending her first Chinese New Year away from home on the year that celebrates her sign of the zodiac. Horses like Chong are often restless and seek independence. They’re also great with money. Her sister Gina, the rooster is always busy and more aggressive in her goals. The other 10 animal signs are traditionally said to have competed in a race, the order of those who won is the order in which the years are celebrated. First – the rat – is charming and quick witted. The Ox came next and is reliable and dependable. Tigers are strong and competitive with a natural authority over others. The Rabbit is the happiest sign when among friends, but are often shy and cautious among strangers. The Dragons are born leaders, idealists, and perfectionists. Snakes are restrained, refined and intelligent. Then came

the Horse, the most misunderstood sign. They often leave home at a young age and will be restless no matter where they end up. Sheep are the most feminine of signs. They’re elegant, charming and artistic. Monkeys come next – they’re inventive, quick witted, though seldom taken seriously. Next is the Rooster – sometimes abrasive and considered rude, but with high ideals. Man’s best friend the Dog comes next with their honest, faithful, and sincere attitude. The Pig is honest and frank.

CITY EVENTS HEAD DOWNTOWN ON FEB. 1 to Chinatown (Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue). Starting at noon at Chinatown Centre and Dragon City Mall, you can catch lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, and Chinese opera at both locations. The Toronto Zoo will also make a special presentation, meaning you may catch a Panda Mascot sighting.

Chong was born and raised in Toronto’s east end, but her genealogy represents the wide range of Chinese immigrants who have come to make up more than 11 per cent of Toronto’s growing population. Chong’s paternal lineage represents one of the turbulent past for Canada’s Chinese. Though widely accepted in the Greater Toronto Area today, her great-grandfather faced a different fate when he arrived in Victoria, British Columbia in 1885 on a ship full of passengers set to work

on the Canadian National Railroad. The Canadian Government had just implemented a $50 head tax on Chinese entering the country in hopes of curbing their immigration. “He smuggled my greatgrandma in, so two for the price of one,” Chong said. Families received an apology from the Canadian Government in 2006 for the head tax as well as compensation. The family is now settled in Toronto. Chong, a fourthgeneration Chinese descendent, sometimes feels that

TTC rethinks Sunday streetcar stops The TTC is considering removing all Sunday streetcar stops to prevent stop-and-goservice and bunching. A report to be presented at this week’s board meeting also recommends placing all streetcar stops 300 to 400 metres apart, which it states would help service efficiency while also keeping the stops within a reasonable walking distance. Removing all 39 Sunday stops, which were first employed in the 1920s as a way to reduce the walking distance for churchgoers, would have a beneficial effect on downtown traffic flows since they’re lightly used, the study finds. orders More GO Train cars wMetrolinx

Metrolinx is spending nearly $500 million on 65 GO Transit passenger train cars meant to boost service within the Toronto region. The transit planning agency also announced it has an option to order an additional 75 coaches from

manufacturer Bombardier to boost GO’s rail fleet in anticipation of an eventual transition to frequent, all-day service. The trains will be manufactured in Thunder Bay, where the TTC’s new streetcar fleet is also under construction, and delivered starting in 2016. Expressway design options wGardiner

Wa t e r f r o n t To r o n t o i s expected to release in February updated designs of the four main construction options it is considering for the elevated portion of the Gardiner Expressway, between Jarvis and Leslie streets. The options under study for the crumbling expressway include maintaining it, keeping it intact and improving the public realm below, replacing it with a new ele-

vated structure or removing it completely and replacing with a grander Lake Shore Boulevard. A public meeting for the study will take place Thursday, Feb. 6 at the Bram and Bluma Appel Salon inside Toronto Reference Library. Many details on time-based transfers still to be worked out, says TTC CEO Byford Board votes to further study implementation RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The TTC has take another step towards expanding time-based transfers across its entire network. On Tuesday, the transit commission’s board of directors voted unanimously to commit to further study of the proposal, which would give riders the opportunity to take unlimited trips in a set time period. Currently that option is only available on the 512 St. Clair streetcar line. But while news of the board’s decision to move forward on time-based transfers was enthusiastically received by riders’ groups, TTC CEO

It’s not the sort of thing we want to rush. You’ve got to get it right, and we’ve got a fair amount of proper knowledge we can draw upon. – TTC CEO Andy Byford

Andy Byford urged caution, saying details were still needed to be resolved in the next few months. Those details include how to integrate the transfers with upcoming Presto card implementation to whether to restrict their use. “There’s lots of issues and factors we need to take into

consideration,” said Byford following the board meeting on Tuesday. “It’s not the sort of thing we want to rush. You’ve got to get it right, and we’ve got a fair amount of proper knowledge we can draw upon.” Timed-transfers have been in place along St. Clair since 2005, and a recent staff report states expanding the program would have a beneficial impact, but at a cost of operating revenue. Byford said if time-based transfers are to be adopted throughout the network, the TTC will need more money to offset its revenue hit. If that was possible, he anticipated time-based transfers could be included in the 2015 operating budget.
