PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical Education (P.E.) is compulsory for all students. No student will be excused from PE except on medical grounds. A letter from the parent/guardian and/or a Medical Certificate must be presented in order to be exempt from Physical Education.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Basketball, Football, Cricket, Netball, Volleyball, Cadets, Choir, Kick Boxing, Environmental Club, Foreign Language Club, Hockey, Inter-School Christian Fellowship, Red Cross, Girl Guides, Chess Club, Dominoes Club, Students Council, Table Tennis, Road Tennis and Liat Travel Club.
GUIDANCE
An on-going Guidance Programme has been instituted from the First Form students. The Guidance Department is also responsible for the
Breakfast and Lunch Programmes, Counselling Services, Referrals & Career Guidance
Work And Study Programme (WASP): Designed for a limited number of our returning fifth form students to complete their education through a work/study attachment at the school.
THE HOUSE SYSTEM
Every student is allocated to a HOUSE each house has adopted a name derived from one of the school’s outstanding administrators/ teachers as follows:

At Ellerslie, student learning (academic, vocational, social) is our main focus. We therefore, encourage all students to get involved in the activities of the school and develop their full potential through participation. Our core values as stated in the school’s strategic plan must be embraced in this regard, to aid in that developmental process.
COVID 19 PROTOCOLS FOR THE CONDUCT OF BUSINESS AT THE ELLERSLIE SCHOOL
Health and Hygiene Protocols
1. Students/Staff/Visitors MUST always wear a mask while on the campus and observe the social distancing protocol.
2. Students/Staff/Visitors MUST have their temperatures checked. Anyone whose temperature is 37.5° Celsius or over will not be permitted to enter the compound or join any class.
Such individuals will be advised to seek medical attention.
3. Students/Staff/Visitors MUST have their hands sanitized.
4. Students/ Staff must follow the sanitizing and hand washing procedure before and after all break intervals.
5. All visitors MUST sign in the daily Log Sheet by stating their name, purpose for visiting the school and organization (where applicable) which they are representing. This information will be recorded by the on Duty Security Officer.
REPORTS ON STUDENTS PERFORMANCE
MIDTERM (Term’s 1 and 2 only)
Students are issued with midterm reports during Term 1 and 2. Parents must examine these reports, discuss with their children/ wards, sign and return the attached slip.
END OF TERM
Reports are issued at the end of each term. Parents and guardians must examine, sign and return the attached slip at the beginning of following term. These reports show performance results.
YEAR-LEVEL MEETINGS
Parents and students must make an effort to attend year-level meetings called during the year, usually an evening between 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. At these meetings, parents are expected to interact with members of staff who teach their child/ward and learn of their progress and conduct.
PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION
Ellerslie has a Parent Teacher Association. All parents/guardians are encouraged to participate in these very important meetings. Meetings are held on alternate Thursdays and Saturdays of each month during the term at 4:30 p.m. at the school.
WEBSITE
The school’s website ess.edupage.org provides valuable information for parents/guardians and students. Notices for meetings, upcoming school events and all school activities are posted on the site.
TEXTBOOK LOAN SCHEME
Under the Textbook Loan Scheme students are entitled to all Textbooks required on the payment of a rental fee.
1. On receipt of the books, students must sign the Textbook Issue
Form. This form MUST also be signed by the parent/guardian who is held responsible for ensuring that the books are covered and kept in good condition.
2. Lost or damaged books MUST be paid for by the parent/ guardian.
3. ALL textbooks must be returned at the end of the school year.
4. Students WILL NOT be issued with books for the new year unless ALL textbooks are returned or monies paid for lost or damaged books.
5. All textbooks should be collected on the date designated for the particular Year.
CARING FOR TEXTBOOKS
Textbooks must contain the student’s name and they must be handled with care. Penalties, including fines will be applied for deliberate damage. Parents are required to pay for lost books. Remember that tax payers are making a sacrifice so that students can have these texts for use in schools.
EXERCISE BOOKS
A set of exercise books will be issued to First Form students upon payment of Petty Fees. Thereafter, new exercise books will only be issued upon presentation of the used books which must be signed by the subject teacher. New books are also issued when students start a new subject.
Students are required to continue using exercise books which are not written out, from one school year to another. Petty fees must be paid up to date to have exercise books replaced. Students are

RULES AND GUIDELINES TO BE ENFORCED AT THE ELLERSLIE SCHOOL
It is an offence to be in breach of the following rules and all other rules as determined by the Ministry of Education or the school.
Any breach of these rules will result in disciplinary action.
All students MUST comply with the School’s Dress Code.
1. Hair styles for female students MUST be simple, tidy and neat.
Artificial braids, weave-ons, extensions, hair pieces or wigs are
NOT allowed by any student in The Ellerslie School uniform. NO lines, patterns, designs, parts are allowed in the hairstyles. Only solid black or solid dark brown hair bows, clips, bands or ribbons are permitted. NO hair dyes of any colour should be worn in the student’s hair or around the hairline.
2. Male students MUST have haircuts that conform to the school standards. The hair must be neat, clean and well-groomed.
Haircuts MUST be low with NO more than ¾ inches at the top.
NO lines, designs, patterns, parts are allowed. NO hair dyes of any colour should be worn in the student’s hair. Male students with locks MUST have their hair fully and appropriately covered with a dark brown tam at ALL times while in the school uniform .
NO wave caps, stocking caps or any such headgear are allowed.
3. No make-up is allowed e.g. false eyelashes, eye liner, lip gloss, mascara, eyebrow pencil. No powder should be visible, either on the face or neck of student.
4. Nail polish and false nails (glue or acrylic) are NOT permitted.
5. Earrings MUST be one pair of small (3mm) gold or silver bobs (no stones). They MUST be worn in the lower ear lobe. No other rings are allowed. Earrings MUST NOT be worn by male students.
6. No coloured watches are allowed: only brown, black, silver or gold watches are to worn.
7. With the exception of watches and silver or gold bob earrings for girls, students are NOT allowed to wear any form of jewellery while in school uniform, on or off the school premises.
8. No tattoos are allowed.
9. Under clothing including vests worn by male or female students
MUST be neutral in colour and not visible.
10. Gold caps are NOT to be worn by students on any tooth.
11. Wrist bands are NOT allowed to be worn with the school uniform, except issued by the school.
12. No bandanas/scarves are to be brought to school.
13. Senior boys pants MUST be tailored to have 6 -7inch bottoms (when measured flat from seam to seam) and MUST fit over the top of the shoes. Pants must be worn at the waist.
14. The pants must be worn with a dark brown plain leather belt with a standard buckle head (i.e. no graphics). Buckles with illegal or offensive emblems will not be permitted.
15. Where ties, waistbands, epaulettes, crest and badges are required they must be worn for the duration of the school day including while travelling to and from school and while attending official school functions.
16. No boots, half-cuts or multi-coloured shoes are allowed. Shoes MUST have laces. They should be dark brown in colour.
17. Female students must keep the waist band neatly in place.
18. These are the requirements for the wearing of socks: a. Girls (Junior and Senior) - one pair of white socks, which are to be worn one inch above the ankle.
b. Boys (Juniors) - one pair of school socks, which are to be worn one inch below the knee.
19. Senior girls’ skirt must be worn at the waist and must extend at least two (2) inches or five (5) cm below the knees. Skirts must not be tight.
20. Male students MUST always wear their shirts neatly tucked into their pants. Female students MUST always have their blouses, which must not be tight, neatly inside their skirts.
21. Students are NOT allowed to bring CELLULAR PHONES
or other electronic devices to school without permission from the Principal. The school therefore accepts NO liability for damage to or loss of devices.
JUNIOR GIRLS SCHOOL UNIFORM The correct uniforms must be worn to/from and at school at all times.
22. FOR JUNIOR GIRLS: 1ST– 3RD YEAR
An A-line dress with short sleeves two (2) inches (above the elbow). The uniform must cover the entire knee, a school belt. Dark brown laced shoes of one solid colour and white socks (one pair only) complete the uniform.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING
a. A loose-fitting A-line dress without a waistband. The hem must be two inches below the knee both in front and at the back of the knees.
b. Interfaced notched collar with front shirt opening.
c. Closing with four/five buttons and button holes depending on size.
d. Darts as indicated: 2 front, 2 back and bust darts.
e. Seam down the middle back and front.
f. Inside pockets, one on both sides.
g. 1 1/²” hem on sleeve, stitched on outside.
h. Woven belt in the school colours with backing, of one and a half inches (1 1/²”) with a two-sided silver buckle.
g. The school crest must be worn on the left breast of the uniform.

23. FOR FOURTH YEAR GIRLS:
A plain white open neck shirt with short sleeves (above the elbow, no long sleeves), with the school crest embroidered on to the pocket. A loose-fitting khaki A-line skirt with the school waistband, an eight 8” inch in-seam zip at the back of the skirt and two (2) inside pockets.
The skirt must have a two-inch hem. Only one pair of white ankle socks are allowed. ONLY dark brown laced shoes of one solid colour to complete the uniform.

35. The school’s P.E. uniform must be worn for all P.E. classes. Bright or multicoloured shoes are not acceptable.

36. An apron should be worn in these areas in order to protect the child's school uniform.
Medical Illness/Conditions
37. All students must comply with the dress code. Exceptions will only be made on: (a) Religious grounds (with permission from the Principal) (b) Health grounds, with the support of a medical certificate.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING
38. If your child/ward has any medical illness (i.e. asthma, seizures etc.) please ensure that they bring to school their medication every day. The school does not dispense medication to students.
Marking of Property (Money)
39. All property should be clearly marked with the owner's name. Money and valuables must not be left in bags, desks, changing rooms or classrooms. Large sums of money should be given to a teacher or taken to the office for safe keeping.
Permission to leave school
40. No pupil, having entered the school premises in the morning, is to leave without the written permission of the
Principal.
41. If, with prior knowledge, a pupil wishes to leave school any time during the school day, or be absent or late, the parent or guardian should seek permission by letter.
Purchasing
Students must not PURCHASE, BORROW or TAKE any thing from anyone through or over the fences or gates or any boundary line of the school.
43. A parent/guardian who resides near the school and wishes their child/ ward to return home for lunch must send a letter to the Principal outlining the time period over which this request will be valid. Once permission is given a pass will be issued from the office each time a student wishes to leave school.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
44. Any pupil who has been absent from school must, on the day of his/her return to school, bring a letter addressed to the Principal from his/her parent or guardian explaining the reason for absence.
Students absent for more than two (2) days must produce a medical certificate on their return to school.
ATTENDANCE AT RELIGIOUS WORSHIP
45. Students will be excused from religious worship provided that their parents/guardians have made a written request to the Principal.
Each request will be treated on its own merit. Students must, however, be present for general information and notices given at morning assembly.
46. There must be no loitering in the bathrooms or at any of the school gates.
Loitering on or near the school compound is not permitted-move briskly to the next place of engagement.
47. There must be no styling of hair on the compound at anytime.
47. Pupils must not run on the corridors, stairs or in the school yard.
48. Pupils must attend their respective classes as soon as he bell rings. Pupils must go from one class to another briskly,quietly and orderly.
49. Unauthorised articles such as firearms, explosives, knives or scissors, that can cause injury or harm to another person MUST
NOT be brought into the school. Students found with these items will be suspended or expelled.
50. Fighting with other students, forcibly taking away the property of another student or any form of aggression or bullying is unacceptable and incurs a penalty.
51. Shouting, screaming and using indecent language is strictly prohibited.
52. Chewing Gum is not allowed.
53. Littering is strictly forbidden.
54. Smoking by students on or off the school compound is strictly prohibited.
55. Alcoholic beverages must NOT be brought onto the school premises under any circumstances whatsoever.
56. Students are not to enter arcades while wearing the school uniform.
57. Organising or participating in any kind of illegal activity including gambling is strictly prohibited.
58. Students MUST be punctual for school. They must arrive by 8:35a.m.

PREFECT SYSTEM
60. There is an active Prefect System in place at the school. Prefects are selected by teachers from among the pupils of the Fifth and Sixth Forms. A Head Boy and a Head Girl are also selected.
During the Third Term, Junior Prefects are selected from the
Fourth Form and will serve as Acting Prefects.
ADDRESS CHANGES
61. A change in the address of any student is to be reported to the form teacher, who will have the change made in the records in the office. Parents/guardians can also update student records on the school’s website.
STUDENTS’ COUNCIL
62. The Students’ Council is an elected body of students whose main purpose is to advance a spirit of cooperation between the teaching and non-teaching staff and the student body.
63. Students who need to leave the classroom MUST request a
“CORRIDOR PASS” from the teacher. Students are not to leave classes without a “PASS.” Those who leave without a
“PASS” will be met with disciplinary action.
ILLNESS/INJURY
64. Students who are feeling ill in the morning (prior to leaving home for school) should remain at home.
65. School personnel are not certified to administer medication to students. Parents/guardians are responsible for the collection and transportation of ill students from school for the purpose of receiving medical attention.
TELEPHONE CALLS
66. These should be made to and from the school’s office and only in case of emergency.
67. Parents are reminded that when visiting the school on business that they are to report to the main office and state their business. Under NO circumstances should any parent/ guardian proceed to any part of the school unless permission is granted and they are escorted by a Security Officer.
68. Students are not permitted outside of their class during lesson times unless in emergency situations or when summon by the office.
DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR
69. Any conduct, which brings disrespect to the school, whether it
takes place on or off the school’s premises, is a breach of the
rules of the school.
70. Behaviour which disrupts the school tranquil learning environment will not be tolerated. Whether on or off of the school’s compound. Students are to become familiar with, and practice the school rules at all times. Violation will incur disciplinary action.
CANTEEN
71. Students must queue up in the canteen. Areas are designated to different groups of students and they are required to queue accordingly. Students must follow all lawful instructions given by members of staff during recess periods.
CLASSROOMS
72. Students are NOT permitted to eat or drink in the classroom.
This includes chewing of gum, which is strictly prohibited, on the school premises. Students are not allowed in class rooms during break periods except when it is raining and permission is granted to do so.
PROPERTY/PLANT
73. Students are not to mark or deface furniture, walls or any school property. They are NOT to tamper with fire extinguishers any part of the electrical system.
74. Any student who damages school property through whatever means will be required through their parents to pay the cost to replace the damaged property to its original state.
75. The school does not take liability for lost or stolen property of students. It is therefore advised that jewelry, large sums of money, cellular phones and other electronic devices are NOT brought to school.
BATHROOMS
76. Bathroom facilities at the school must only be used for the purpose for which they were intended.
77. All students are expected to leave the bathrooms clean after use.
Any issues e.g. leakage, blockage, etc. must be reported to the office immediately.
RESTRICTED AREAS
78. Classrooms are out of bounds after school hours except for detentions and club meetings where a teacher or other school authorised adult is providing supervision. It is a serious offence to force entry into any locked room before or after school. Students are forbid den to linger near the school gates, the laboratories and on the stairways leading to classrooms, at anytime.

Education Workshops, Home Economics Rooms, Language

Labs, Library, Changing Rooms, Pavilion or any other specialists room unless supervised by a teacher or other school authorised adult.
80. The following areas are strictly out of bounds to students except when conducting legitimate business:
The Staff room/The Janitors rooms The Main Office The Senior Teachers’ Office and surrounding corridors The Guidance Counsellor’s Office and surrounding corridors The Canteen except during the lunch period, before the first bell at 8:35 a.m. and after 2:40 pm.
CHEATING POLICY
81. At Ellerslie it is expected that each student abides by ethical academic standards. Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, cheating or copying from other students, using technology for illicit purposes and unauthorised communication between students for the purpose of gaining an advantage during an examination is strictly prohibited.
TO ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS/VISITORS CONDUCTING BUSINESS AT THE ELLERSLIE SCHOOL
Please be advised that ALL persons conducting business at The Ellerslie School are to observe the following standards:
1. Report to the Security Officer at the front gate who will record your name and the nature of your business in the sign-in book. This
MUST be done before proceeding to the office, (escorted by the
Security Officer). 2. Visitors to the school MUST be properly attired. The following are UNACCEPTABLE:
a. Revealing tops or splits d. Back-outs or belly-outs b. Miniskirts e. Halter tops c. Shorts exposing the buttocks. 3. All business is to be conducted at the office. 4. Persons are not to go directly to the classrooms or staffrooms. 5. Persons wishing to see the Principal or Staff MUST do so through appointment.
6. Section 64. (1) of the Education Regulations (1982) states that; a person is guilty of an offence who:
(a) causes a disturbance in an educational institution (b) insults or abuses a teacher or other person engaged in the instruction of pupils in the presence or hearing of the pupils; (c) uses threating, abusive or insulting words in an educational institution. (d) assaults a teacher, insults or abuses a pupil. 7. A person guilty of an offense under subsection (1) is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $500.00, or imprisonment of six months or both.
