Bakelite commands interest, high prices in today’s market By Eric Stanway

T

he other night, I decided to test out a rumor I had been hearing for quite some time -- that the vintage plastic Bakelite was commanding outrageous prices. Accordingly, I went onto EBay, and found that this was much more than idle gossip; bracelets and sundry knick knacks were going for hundreds of dollars. Intrigued, I decided to look a little deeper into this odd phenomenon. It turns out that this substance has a long and revered history. Bakelite wasn’t actually the first plastic -- that distinction belongs to Celluloid, derived from plant cellulose and camphor. This was created in the 1850s, and was later widely used in the motion picture industry. Unfortunately, it was notoriously flammable, which is why so few films

from the silent era survive to this day. Then there was Galalith, produced from milk protein and formaldehyde, which came along in the 1890s. This was widely used in the costume jewelry business for a while, but died out, as other plastics began to come along. In 1907, an Austrian chemist by the name of Leo Henrik Baekland discovered that a polymeric plastic made from phenol

and formaldehyde possessed remarkable properties, not least of which was that it was resistant to electricity and heat. Baekland was, at that point, already a rich man, having previously invented Velox, a photographic paper that could be developed by gaslight rather than sunlight. In 1898, the Eastman Kodak Company purchased his invention for a cool $750,000. Baekland called his new compound Bakelite, and it immediately took off in the automotive and electrical industries emerging in the early 20th century. Soon, people were buying all sorts of consumer products made of the stuff, including jewelry boxes, clocks, radios, kitchenware and so forth. In the 1920s, it became incredibly popular in the manufacturing of jewelry, particularly bracelets, which are highly prized to this day.

Kari Lindstrom, owner of the Melamine Cup, displays a cake cutter with a handle made of Bakelite, manufactured in the 1940s.

In order to find out a little more about this product, I headed over to The Melamine Cup in Jaffrey, and had a little talk with owner Kari Lindstrom. “You have to be really careful about counterfeits,” she told me. “There are a few ways to see if it’s genuine Bakelite, or some kind of knock-off. First off, if you soak it in warm water and then smell it, you should detect the scent of formaldehyde. Secondly, when you clean it, there

should be a yellow residue on the cloth. Finally, there are no seam lines on the real article.” There was a time when Bakelite was ubiquitous at yard sales, selling for a few dimes. Alas, those days are pretty much gone, as more and more people become aware of just how valuable it is. Should you happen to find something that you suspect might be made of Bakelite, by all means, snatch it up. You could sell it for a pretty penny.

Their selection of clothes, from pants to sweaters, dresses, dress slacks, dress jackets, business casual tops and yes even jeans and jackets are the nicest quality I have yet to find in a consignment shop. They also have select shoes and jewelery. Moderately priced for me it was definitely worth the drive. I would give it a five star rating from selection to quality to customer service. - What an amazing place!! Natalie was great to meet you and can't wait to come and shop and chat again. I love the selection and the atmosphere is amazing. The size does not matter we all want to look and feel beautiful and what Natalie is doing with this shop is great! Keep up the good work can't wait to go again!! - I had one of the best clothes shopping experiences ever! I found tons of beautiful, quality and flattering pieces. The shop is artfully set up and felt like my sizes and style was the focus and not an afterthought. There is no doubt I'll be returning and spreading the word!

Specializing in clothing sizes 14 & up and gorgeous accessories to take clothing from separates to an ensemble.

We also used to raise miniature horses and had about a dozen a while ago. We’re now making the transition to the alpacas, so we only have two of them left.” Russ said that the alpacas perform two main functions; they keep the land clear, and they also produce the fiber for the knitted goods that they sell in their gift shop. “My wife really likes to knit, so she started out making a few hats,” he said. “That grew into a complete gift shop with all sorts of alpaca yarns, crafts and knitted items. We also produce our own maple syrup, and sell other local goods, such as honey, preserves, mustards and crafts.” Russ said that their most popular item are handmade alpaca socks, of which they sell about 700 pairs each year.

With the holidays coming upon us, Russ stressed that the farm has a number of Christmas Trees, grown right on the property. “We raise about 1,500 trees for sale, four feet and higher,” he said. “You can harvest them yourself, or get them pre-cut from our shop.” Russ said that he and his wife are reveling in the country way of life, and enjoying the scenic beauty of rural Surry. “This is really the best way to live,” he said. “I couldn’t see doing anything else.” Crescendo Acres Farm is located on 21 Carpenter Road, Surry, NH 03431. The farm is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, phone them at (603) 352-9380 or email Rfiorey@ne.rr.com. New England’s Best Shops & Services The great eggnog riot of West Point By Eric Stanway

T

he winter of 1826 was a cold and miserable one for the cadets at West Point. The strict rules of the academy forbade the use of spirits or tobacco on the campus. The only time when students could get a drink at all was when they went on excused absences and imbibed at the local pubs. Well, Christmas rolled around, and the lads were looking for a way to celebrate, brazenly disregarding the school rules against alcohol. They were determined to make a batch of eggnog. After all, they reasoned, even George Washington favored a heavily liquored version of the seasonal drink. If the father of the country saw nothing wrong in this, perhaps it would be all right. After all, what could possibly go wrong? As it turned out, quite a lot. Things started out simply enough. Three cadets, including future Confederate President Jefferson Davis, headed out to the tavern owned by Benny Havens, a couple of miles outside of the campus. There, they got the necessary ingredients for the party, and smuggled them back to the school, hiding them in the North Barracks. Just after midnight on Christmas morning, the preparations began in earnest. Cream and eggs were mixed together, along with capacious quantities of whiskey and brandy. The windows were blackened and the students kept an eye out for authorities. Of course, liquor being what it is, all of that fell apart by about 4 a.m. One Captain Ethan Hitchcock, who had tangled with drunken students in the past, heard a ruckus building up in the barracks, and went to investigate it. Upon discovering the party, he promptly placed Davis under arrest, and he willingly complied. The other students were not nearly as acquiescent, however. Drunken students ran crazily through the corridors, brandishing muskets and bayonets. One actually pitched a log at an officer, before the riot was quelled. When the smoke cleared, 19 students were up for Court Martial. Seven were saved by a court recommendation of clemency, and 12 were expelled. Astonishingly, Davis received hardly any discipline whatsoever. That students would actually risk dishonorable dismissal over eggnog says a lot about this time-honored beverage. It is commonly believed that the “nog” in the word is short for “noggin,” a small wooden mug regularly used in taverns. Originally, it was a hot drink, known as a “posset,” which mixed Spanish sherry with milk. Eventually, eggs were added to the mix. The only impediment to this drink becoming popular in the Old World was the lack of refrigeration. Milk and eggs were rarely available in the towns, where they would quickly become spoiled. In America, however, a lot of these concerns became moot. Due to the large amount of dairy

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER/JANUARY 2017

42

farms here, these products were easily available, and generally fresh. Consequently, it became a favorite drink of the Colonists, with a few variations. In New England, for instance, the spiking was performed with Rum, which was readily available due to the triangle trade, where it was a regular rate of exchange for African slaves. In the South, however, Bourbon, distilled from sugar cane, was the liquor of choice. Of course, these days, the issue of salmonella in eggs is more prominent than it was in the past, and food safety concerns are sure to pop up. According to Elisa Maloberti, director of Egg Product Marketing at the American Egg Board, that shouldn’t be an issue, as long as the eggs are heated to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, at that temperature, you basically have an omelet; that shouldn’t be a problem, however, if you add milk to the mixture. Eggs harden when their proteins coagulate, so diluting them with milk and sugar and keeping the heat low should ease any problems by keeping the proteins separate. Adding two tablespoons of sugar and ¼ cup of milk should put a stop to coagulation, and lessen the danger of any of your guests ending up in the hospital. EGGNOG 3 eggs, beaten 1/3 cup sugar pinch salt 2 1/2 cups whole milk 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 cup heavy whipping cream 3 tablespoons powdered sugar 1 cup rum 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg In a heavy saucepan, combine eggs, 1/3 cup sugar, and salt and beat with wire whisk. Gradually stir in milk, beating until mixture is smooth. Cook 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat stirring constantly, until mixture coats a metal spoon. Remove custard from heat and stir in vanilla. Place saucepan in a large bowl of ice water until custard cools stirring frequently; then refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. In a large chilled bowl, combine heavy cream and powdered sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form. Stir in rum then fold whipped cream mixture into the cooled custard. Pour eggnog into serving bowl, and sprinkle with nutmeg. Serve immediately. Makes 10 servings. (Adapted from a recipe by Linda Larsen) Eric Stanway can be reached at Eric.Stanway@yahoo.com.

Primitive Thymes evokes a sense of history By Eric Stanway

W

alking down the winding walkway to Primitive Thymes is like taking a step back into history. The circa 1871 home was once The Hillsville School #7 in Spencer, Massachusetts. Its current owner, Karen Boulay, has owned the Olde homestead for 23 years. Karen and her husband, Rich, live on one side and a quaint primitive shoppe, owned by Karen is located within the Olde Homestead. Karen has owned the business for twenty years. She wanted to have a shoppe where people could come and visit and escape the pace of the hectic world outside. When you step inside its hand-hewed wooden door,

your cares are left on the doorstep. Candles greet you and relaxing music surrounds you. The shoppe is comprised of six rooms with antiques, early Country pieces, reproduction furniture and accessories and seasonal primitives. Ninety percent of all items are handmade in America by a host of
