HUNTING FOR SEA-GLASS

Ever since I can remember I have been a collector. My parents told me that when I was three, I used to pick up pebbles from the beach and they had to carry them home for me. Stones, gems and rocks hold a special meaning to me and I find I am naturally drawn to them.Throughout my life I ve always had a fascination and keen interest in how things are made, so jewellery, gemstones and found objects have always been a passion obsession of mine. I remember at school I used to make beaded jewellery and sell it to family and friends. ’

(

)

At one time I thought I wanted to do fashion, as I enjoyed customising clothes and making things from fabric. So I spent a few years at college and even got a distinction in textiles art foundation, but I was always slinking down to the metal workshops to play with the metals. Even my final collection of dresses had metal in them! Looking back now, jewellery was always meant to be my path. I just hadn t worked it out yet. I guess the moment when it all clicked for me, was when I couldn t stop thinking about it. I realised that whenever a friend needed help with a confidence issue, or a break up, or I wanted to make them smile, I would make them jewellery or give them a gemstone which matched their needs. So I realised that it wasn t just about enjoying making jewellery, it was actually about empowering people and making them feel good, which I enjoy even more. How people react when they receive one of my pieces is what is inspiring me to make more. ’

LIFE OF A JEWELLERY DESIGNER

"IT WAS ACTUALLY ABOUT EMPOWERING PEOPLE" I start my day by thinking of three things in my life I m grateful for, I find it makes me appreciate things a lot more. I then have a cup of warm water with half a squeezed lemon. It s so good for you google it . I check my old school handwritten page a day diary for the day s tasks. I do use tech stuff too, but I find it can be distracting . I try to be honest with myself and make the list manageable so I don t freak out. ’

(

)

-

-

-

(

)

I find it really helps me organise what needs doing and it s so satisfying ticking things off the list. Then it s Avocado for breakfast, yum. ’

If the weather s good I ll go for a walk or sea glass hunting. If not, I ll have a rummage through my gemstones and sea glass and sketch new designs. I also find mornings are a good time to photograph. Then I ll work on commissions and creating jewellery. ’

My partner surfs, that s his obsession , sorry passion and it s one of the reasons we decided to settle in Cornwall, England . We re both from Devon England originally and spent a few years travelling and living in New Zealand. Cornwall s beaches are among the best in the world, they also have great waves for surfing. This suits us perfectly because when there are waves, Jimi goes surfing and I m scouring the beach for treasures. ’

(

)

(

)

I only use the best sea glass I can find, with no chips or jagged edges, although smooth pieces are harder to find. I love how sea glass is transformed from a man made object, back to the wonderful freeform nature of a pebble, by years of rolling in the crashing waves. It only takes 100 years or so for it to turn the broken glass into a good piece of seaglass! . The main way you can tell a natural piece of sea glass from a machine frosted one is to check the surface for natural imperfections and variations in the surface of the glass. -

(

)

My favourite colours of sea glass are the greens, seafoam whites and rare blues. I spend ages selecting only the best for my jewellery pieces. I grade them by size, shape and colour. I also look out for super rare colours like red, dark cobalt blue, cornflower blue, and pairs which I save for earrings. Although, there are never exact pairs as each piece is as unique as a fingerprint. When I create sea glass pendants I set the sea glass in the silver in a unique way, so the light shines through, just like it does when you find it on the beach. I also have a collection of gemstones. There are Opals from Australia, stunning Peruvian Amazonite pieces and lush Labradorite from Norway which I ve collected over the years and continue to pick up on my travels and because I m a magpie! ’

;

jewellery @gracebaskerville

I make jewellery in my workshop, which at the moment is our spare room! I m hoping to build a studio in the garden soon and invite people to join me for workshop sessions and making lessons. It s always fun to inspire others and meet fellow creative people. I have an inspiration wall right in front of my work bench too, which is great to look at while I work. ’

Living in Cornwall is great, I enjoy coastal walks to gather inspiration. The textures of the rough rocks and crashing waves are what s behind my latest collection, which I m hoping to officially launch in March. I ve already released some pieces pre launch as I was too excited! ’

-

Cornwall has so much heritage and old fishing villages some of them are still working now . I love walking along the harbours and looking at the boats and how they are constructed love a bit of rusty metal. The mass of ropes, nets and lobster pots. The old cobble stoned walls, twisted seaweed and weathered driftwood. There s just so much to feed the imagination here, it s amazing. I like to take photos of textures, colours and forms. I put the best ones on the inspo wall in my workshop, or sometimes I just dive straight into designing. I also find inspiration comes by looking through my stone collection and seaglass. Or sometimes it comes when I m trying to get to sleep! When I m designing I always ask myself would I wear this? and if the answer is yes, I go for it, if not, I know it needs tweaking. It s a good way of making sure it s from the heart. (

)

;

When I was thinking about what I wanted my jewellery to represent I realised that the name needed to encompass the values of the people who wear my pieces and reflect my style too. Something which inspires and empowers people, that they can identify with. Fierce yet feminine. Wild and rustic, yet sentimental and classic. I did some soul searching and remembered my Great Grandmother s name Grace Baskerville . It reminded me of the famous story of the Hound of the Baskervilles , based on Dartmoor in Devon, where my family originates. I liked how it was wild and mysterious. This helped me design the logo, with the help of my partner who is a graphic designer . We sketched out a hound to represent the fierce wild Baskerville legend and combined it with wings to represent the female, feminine Grace element. ’

TWISTED SEAWEED & WEATHERED DRIFTWOOD... SO MUCH TO FEED THE IMAGINATION

WHERE ARE YOU GOING WITH GRACE BASKERVILLE? I m starting to put myself out there online a bit more. It seemed daunting at first but I m connecting with lovely like minded ladies. I m hoping to reach out to more people. I plan on travelling more to stock up on more gemstones and inspiration. Collaborations are also on my list, as I would love to work with other entrepreneurs, especially those who do clothing swimwear or skincare wellbeing, because it would be great to co promote each other and do photo shoots together! I m also learning more specialist techniques so that I can create some new exciting designs. ’

CHARLOTTES BIZ TIPS Firstly just go for it! Secondly, try not to compare yourself to other people too much. We re all different and we re all at different stages on this journey. You have to start somewhere. I look at people who ve got way more followers, but I don t let it phase me anymore. I just do my thing. Thirdly, this little nugget actually came from Sabrina herself, try to focus on something that is true to you and try not to be influenced by what others are doing. In the end, if it comes from the heart and feels genuine, you re on the right path to success. I could literally write pages on this. ’

One last little thing I wanna say, and this is KEY be brave enough to ask for help. Whether it s from a business advisor, someone you admire in the industry or a lifestyle coach. You need to surround yourself with people who get it , so that you ve got that support when you need it. Trust me, it s worth investing in yourself. ;

LIVING IN PARADISE. WHILE GOING TROUGH HELL A two part series by Sam Streeter

"As I examined paradise on the outside I was going through hell on the inside. I have a lovely combination of depression and anxiety. Like the mixture of the blue and green where the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea meet. Crashing together like true madness." Everyone has a story, this is Sam's

When Sabrina approached me to be a contributor I was beyond flattered. She said she loved my energy. It was the invitation to boost the confidence of a girl who didn t feel she had much left to offer. I met Sabrina at the most amazing boutique I have ever stepped foot in. It s filled with everything ME! From the trendiest clothes, amazing hats, books you never knew you needed to read, art, candles and accessories to complete anyone s everything. '

'

Maybe that s because the owner has impeccable taste and is willing to share it with you in this heartwarming walk in closet. That luxurious walk in closet was a form of therapy, retail therapy. In fact, that s actually what I was doing. I was filling a void with material things. I remember my first big purchase from there where I actually used that phase retail therapy I told the owner I was going through a tough time. The purchase included a dress that made me feel pretty, '

a necklace to instil positivity and a book to inspire. With those three items I still didn t wish to see the total. Just take my card I said. She laughed, wished me a good day and hoped for things to be on the up. I m going to rewind a few months to that tough time. The scene is literally set in paradise. Picture a small town with palm trees lining the main strip, amazing coffee, organic grocers, world famous surf breaks, the most kind hearted and accepting people you ve met. People that care, that strike up a conversation and want to hear your story. '

As I examined paradise on the outside I was going through hell on the inside. I have a lovely combination of depression and anxiety. Like the mixture of the blue and green where the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea meet. Crashing together like true madness. Just like anyone else battling a mental illness I can have my good days and I can have my bad ones. I can have anxious days and depressed ones.

I can juggle it all like a circus act with a smile on my face. The trouble is you can t keep up the act forever. I dropped my hold of it all. I was sick and my sickness was crippling. I didn t want to work. I didn t want to teach yoga. I didn t want to get out of bed. I didn t want to eat. I honestly didn t want to live. I simply wanted to disappear. '

'

'

'

'

'

"I was so lost in my depressive state that I believed I was hopeless."

When things that came out of my mouth were no longer making sense my knight in shining armour stepped in. My partner of half a decade has witnessed plenty of ups and downs in our time together but this was, in his eyes, the worst. He never stopped fighting for me long after I had given up. He held me up every time I would start to sink. So, this time worried, instead of going to work he called a local counsellor and given the severity of the circumstance squeezed me in that day.

As I walked into the counselling room I felt comfort yet a great deal of confusion. I was so lost in my depressive state that I believed I was hopeless. I was sinking quickly and lost sight of the surface. I couldn t understand how talking to someone would help, but it did. Of course it did. Talking to anyone about your struggles will always help you get through. The biggest obstacle was the medication I had been put on only a year and a half ago obviously wasn t doing its job. '

Her heart filled the entire room in which we sat. Plus, she had solutions for me. Over the next week we quickly weened me off of my old antidepressants and onto the next. That week was agony. I had extreme withdrawals. I was on an emotional roller coaster and experiencing nausea and dizziness.

'

"She had a smile that made me want to smile again. Her heart filled the entire room in which we sat."

My counsellor referred me to a doctor who practiced in the same building. This doctor was different than any other I had talked to. Her eyes locked with mine when I spoke. She had a smile that made me want to smile back.

@_samstreeter

I was given an anti anxiety medication to help me get through. They helped but also disappeared quickly. Their job was to keep me treading water until the new medication could get me to dry land.

The sedated version of myself lost the ability to hold on to memories. I can only recall snippets from that month. I continued to seek counselling with the lady who actually spoke with me about me. She didn t just sit across from me, assess me and counsel me. She shared experiences, listened to mine and cared. '

My depression lessened but my self worth still teetered. I had too much time on my hands. Too much time to spend with myself, someone I still wasn t very fond of. I was standing in the shallows. My counsellor encouraged me to get a job again, any job. I was nervous. '

I had no idea how to present myself. All this isolation had given me a social phobia. When I walked out of her comforting space that day she handed over the confidence she held for me. So, as I walked past a hair salon I had passed plenty of times before I decided to introduce myself. I told them of my experience and availability.

Around the same time I had mentioned to a coffee shop I frequented at, that if they needed help I could use the hours. Before I knew it I had two jobs and was back teaching yoga. My confidence grew quickly. I was on dry land. With so much on my plate there was no time to be depressed. When I did find small pockets of time I found that anxiety had been shoved into them. I was replacing one extreme with the next and was so blind to it. I thought I was better. I was replacing one extreme with the next and was so blind to it. I thought I was better.

I had my last visit with my counsellor. Boasted to her about my turn around. I had fallen in love with the people I worked for and their families.

Sam's story continues in issue #2 ....I find myself sitting in a friend s kitchen, alone with my cellphone in hand as it rings waiting for my counsellor to pick up. Water was rushing in through the windows and doors. I got caught stealing from work but I couldn t remember doing it... '

was born in Hummelo, a small I village on the countryside in the

Netherlands. To attend Photography at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts I moved to the Hague, where I learned the craft of photography in the traditional way. In 1993 I graduated, ever since, my love for film and old school techniques has always remained. However I have adapted to the digital era as well. '

I fell in love with New Zealand during one of my travels in 2009 and decided to move to this beautiful country. I am very happy to call Raglan home now. “

We are super proud to feature Karin van Til in this special first issue of The Eclectic. For this gorgeous woman, photography is not only a passion and her work it is also who she is as a human being. One of her favourite tools of the trade is a medium format film camera. Inspiration is sourced from anything in life…. walking the streets and watching people, buildings, daily life activities. As well as her travels to foreign countries and new cultures.

"Figure out what you love and follow that true path."

Photobooks, movies, galleries or the lyrics of a song, can be great sources as well. If you d like to become a professional photographer yourself, Karin says it s key to find your voice, figure out what you love and follow that true path. This will help to create your own style. '

MEET

A Coffee Chat WITH SABRINA WEBER

Co Founder of The Eclectic Women Magazine & Owner at HelloFreedomLifestyle

Sabrina, how do you drink your coffee? I have recently become obsessed with Espresso over ice! Sometimes I add a dash of cold almond milk, that's it. Good coffee does not need sugar. How was the magazine idea born? A blend of three things really; One was that I was looking for more creative ways to deliver lots of value and inspiration to my followers and coaching clients. The second part is that through my work I got to know so many women who deliver outstanding services to the world. I wanted to create a platform to share 'them' with my people.

The last component is to have a creative outlet for myself. I am multi-passionate and felt like there are aspects like design, art, food... that are not getting enough attention in my coaching biz and I wanted to give them some energy too. I shared this idea with Nik, she had to think about it for like two seconds and she was all in! The rest is history.

What can readers expect for the future? Expect the unexpected. What words do you live by? Be open to everything and attached to nothing. Excitement over fear. Gratitude over anger.

Love what you see? www.TheEclecticWomen.com

MEET

A Coffee Chat WITH NICOLA CHUNG

Co Founder of The Eclectic Women Magazine & Founder of Arohalifestyle.com

Nicola, or is it Nik? How do you drink your coffee? Nik or Nicola but not Nikky! Usually a single shot flat white with a plantbased milk does the trick. Not too strong... I'm high energy enough, so coffee is a real treat! Otherwise a herbal tea concoction like the kawakawa ginger tea pictured (always in a jar! It looks so pretty!) What are some of the challenges you have faced creating this magazine? Sabrina and I were in agreement that we wanted to be of service more. And this magazine is the perfect solution. The challenge was, however, what we wanted to share! Both of us have so many interests, passions and areas of expertise, that we were finding

it hard to narrow ourselves down to talking about one topic. Hence The Eclectic magazine. It says it all really - a magazine that touches on many topics representative of our whole selves - not just one aspect!

So, who do you imagine will enjoy your magazine? I think this magazine will appeal to many women. We are constantly told that we need to focus on one thing, but why can't we have it all? The women I know and am inspired by, have their hands in many pies! What words do you live by? Personal responsibility is your key to freedom.

Cover Story Be In Love with Heather Allison

When I first bumped into Heather (in the virtual world) there were literally rainbows & unicorn sparkles between us. We had an equal crush on each others Pinterest! And I knew that she will be the first cover girl for The Eclectic! Meet Heather the Love coach... Sabrina

TE: What mind space where you in, 12 months ago?

That principle whether supporting my clients to create their best relationships, their best selves, or their best lives still guides everything I do, and is the foundation of all of my teachings. -

HA: I. Was. HATING my 9 5, Corporate America job. It wasn t an awful job, in fact, 3 months earlier, I had thought it was my DREAM job. But, 3 months in, it was spiralling down into an awful, passive aggressive, unsupportive, can t seem to win no matter what I did situation, and I was miserable. -

"The Universe intervened, orchestrated my getting laid off, and pulled back a magical curtain."

And just then one of the many reasons I know this work is my calling the Universe intervened, orchestrated my getting laid off, and pulled back a magical curtain to reveal, finally and so clearly, my Soul s path and invite me to dive in, head first, into my purpose. -

-

'

TE: How does a typical day look like for you now? HA: One of the first things I put in place when I really launched into my business was Soul Time and Body Time . My own coach calls these my anchor practices that start off and help to inform the energy, vibe and abundance of my days. In full disclosure, I m working up to honouring that anchor every day. I am, however, FIERCELY protective of my Soul Time and Body Time those mornings I speak to clients or potential clients . "

Interestingly, I had booked a tattoo appointment to have be in love tattooed on my left rib, which was cementing rather, inking my intention and commitment to live my life guided only by one principle: Love and I was set to get inked just a couple of days after I was let go. "

I have found that it so powerfully impacts my ability to show up for them, serve them powerfully, and connect to their hearts and bodies and to my own intuition, and is imperative for my work.

TE: What inspires you? HA: List time! : )

Elizabeth Gilbert, Richard Branson, Marianne Williamson, Danielle LaPorte. Far too many artists, photographers, and creators to list most of whom I follow in Instagram. PINTEREST. Holy crap, Pinterest. Byron Bay, Australia Tulum, Mexico artistic soul locations separated at birth, I m certain of it! The woo exploration of the ether world synchronicities coincidences which are never coincidences magic, mindset and mysticism music one of the most transporting and transforming elements in life LIGHT and the soulfulness of shadows both are so incredibly important to me in my photography work. -

From there, it s a mix: two days a week, I work with my beautiful Goddess clients one day a week, I connect with my potential Goddesses in free Explore Sessions and the other two days are reserved for my own ongoing exploration and expansion with my coaches, creation and writing, group programs, and FLOW. '

-

Flow is something I teach and model for all of my clients. It s one of the most powerful ways to embody the Feminine, and one of the most important elements in creating and receiving the love, joy and abundance we all want to have. -

-

'

-

-

;

The power of Love‌ I don t mean the lower case I love you, I love chocolate, I love the way the ocean smells love I mean upper case, opposite of Fear, all encompassing and all powerful, Love. I m so honored and inspired to be in service of it daily. '

"

"

;

-

-

-

-

"

"

'

TE: What is the number one thing that brought you out of the funk? HA: It s a trio of things two of which I ve mentioned: Love and my Goddessness. '

---

'

The third is so intrinsically connected with those two that it s difficult for me to tell you which leads to which, or which is more important. It s a bit chicken and egg‌ '

'

-

-

Connection to my Soul.

"Connection is like a rising above all of the fears that keep us from shining our brightest" It s all the same: a connection to the part of you that is YOU, but also bigger than you that is all Love that loves you madly that knows more than you about your path, your purpose, and your highest good yet loves you so unconditionally that it ll support you and cheer you on even if you don t want to listen. Until She decides that s enough, and it s time to smack you in the face and encourage you to finally step onto your path. With Love, of course. Even when it hurts. '

;

;

;

---

'

'

(

'

'

)

You can replace the word Soul with whatever feels better to you, if you d like: "

"

'

Higher self. Expanded self. Inner wise woman. Inner guide. Intuition. Your own divinity.

That connection is like a rising above all of the fears, uncertainties, awful stories we tell ourselves, and pains, patterns and voices that keep us from shining our brightest.

TE: Just one more question Heather, what does gratitude mean to you? HA: It means feeling abundant and finding Love in everything you have, are, do, and experience. It s not always easy, but when we can get there even when there s struggle or pain it s exactly when the Universe opens its most loving, most giving arms to us it s when magic happens. '

FEELING STUCK IN YOUR WORK? by Sabrina Weber Photo by Ariana Escobar

Are you in that kinda jazz, where you have tons of work to do but somehow you are super unmotivated and stuck? Nothing seems to flow... Take a second to look around you. Is there clutter? This is an especially big topic for those of us who work from home. We need to not only look for clutter in our office but in the whole house! Yes, I am not kidding. Clutter in the kitchen or bedroom can totally affect our workflow as well. Does the dishwasher need emptying? What about that washing to hang up? Or that pile of stuff you just kicked into your pretty

5 WAYS TO HONOUR YOUR BODY by Nicola Chung

“Ask yourself is this what someone who loves themselves would do? "

Do you have a topsy-turvy relationship with your body? One moment you’re absolutely in love, the next you're hating all over it! It’s an emotional roller-coaster and totally energy zapping! Making peace with my body has allowed me to really show up in my own life and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

If you're feeling a little off - here are some tips to get back on top!

Speak to, think of, act with and move your body with care, love, empowerment and gratitude

• Write a list of all the wonderful things your body allows you to do (e.g. see beautiful sights, breathe in fresh air, hug your loved ones)

• Look in the mirror and give your body a compliment (or three!) – anything said with sincerity will do the trick!

• Say “Thank-you body, for taking me where I need to go and letting me do all the things I love”. Create a mantra that resonates with you.

• Words are powerful - watch the language you use with your body. Be ready to catch yourself in negative speak and turn it around asap!

• Give yourself a massage. Add an essential oil to support your intention (lavender for calming, sandalwood for grounding, rose for love).
