DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com In 2000, Toronto council decided to excise the names of the old municipalities from street signs in order to reflect the identity of the newly-amalgamated Toronto. But next month, council will debate putting at least one of those names back on street signs: The Borough of East York. Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee left the decision up to council, after committee members were tied voting on a staff recommendation to kill a request to have stickers saying "East York" put on street signs in the former municipality’s boundaries. The request was actually for logos in East York and Scarborough - but only East York councillors and residents came out to the Sept. 19 committee meeting to plead for the historical nod to the old borough - at one time, Canada’s only borough. "I feel government should do everything it can to preserve our history, which includes the six municipalities," said Parkview Hills ratepayer leader Justin Van l See PEOPLE, page 3

Dette. "Signage is part of our community’s identity." East York disappeared as a government when the provincial government decreed that the seven municipal governments in Metropolitan Toronto should be joined together as one in 1996. But the spirit of East York lives on, Van Dette noted, in part in the distinctive EY logo. "People feel very connected and attached to the logo," Van Dette said. "It is our former municipality. It was well displayed by the former East York government. It’s something we should be celebrating and it should be cherished." Leaside ratepayer leader Carol Burton-Fripp said it was well worth the estimated cost of between $3,000 and $4,000 a year to attach the logo to street signs as they’re replaced. "We feel there is a return to spend a little bit of mon-

sentiment." Beaches-East York Coun. Janet Davis told committee members that the feeling is real.

"I can tell you that our community of East York has an enduring sense of identity," she said. "It has remained strong since

amalgamation, and there is an incredible sense of pride in our community amongst all of the neighbourhoods that make up

East York." Davis noted that there remains an East York Historical Society, an East York Foundation, an East York garden club. "You can go to East York Collegiate and find kids with an East York logo tattooed on some part of their body," she said. Members of the committee weren’t all convinced. Etobicoke Centre Coun. Stephen Holyday said that it wouldn’t end with East York. "We’ve got 25 years of a technicolour dog’s breakfast ahead of us," he said. "The pressure will be to change more signs: they’ve got to have more stickers on them because this one has one and these one don’t." The committee finally voted down the middle on a motion from committee chair Jaye Robinson to simply receive the matter. That means that the report goes to council without recommendation in October.

The Todmorden Mills Harvest Festival takes place on Sunday, Sept. 24 from noon to 4 p.m.

Take in some art at Don Valley Park The first of many installations set to be featured in a new public art program in the 500-acre Don Valley Park will be launched on Saturday, Sept. 23. Monsters for Beauty, Permanence and Individuality by acclaimed Omaskêko Cree artist Duane Linklater will feature 14 large-scale, concrete gargoyle sculptures. The large-scale figures, which depict the gargoyles that adorn prominent buildings in downtown Toronto, will be located along the Lower Don Trail in the meadow north of the Bloor Viaduct. In his works, Linklater, who is originally

According to a release, the artist sees gargoyles as the protectors of buildings that communicate a certain kind of power and authority, speaking to a larger conversation regarding ongoing Indigenous and colonial occupation of the city. Curated by Toronto’s

Kari Cwynar, the Don Valley Park Art Program is the result of a partnership between Evergreen and the City of Toronto. The multi-year project will feature a range of temporary works including sculptural installations, murals, billboards and performances, by local, Canadian and international artists. Notice of Completion Lakeshore East Rail Corridor Expansion (Don River to Scarborough GO Station) – Transit Project Assessment Process The Project Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is upgrading its commuter rail system into Regional Express Rail. The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is now home to nearly 7 million people and heading towards 10 million by 2041. To address the urgent transit needs of the GTHA, the Province of Ontario committed to implement Regional Express Rail and make other improvements to the GO system. By 2025, electrified trains will be running every 15 minutes or better, all day and in both directions, within the most heavily travelled sections of the GO network. To support this service increase, Metrolinx has completed a Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) under Ontario Regulation 231/08: Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings, made under the Environmental Assessment Act, to evaluate expanding and improving the Lakeshore East GO rail corridor between the Don River and Scarborough GO Station in the City of Toronto. The project involves: • • • • • •

New volunteers, monetary donations needed to ensure event’s continued success JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Organizers of the 2018 East York Canada Day parade, community festival, and fireworks display are planning for a successful 61st annual edition. Last night, organizers hosted the first of three meetings for the July 1 celebration at the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave. Subsequent gatherings will be held on the third Wednesday of October and November at the same time and same place. The East York Canada Day parade and free park celebration at Stan Wadlow Park is a volunteer-run, nonprofit event.

This summer, the 60th annual festival ran into a number of challenges and was almost cancelled when some volunteers moved on, leaving some loose ends, most notably the lack of an application for a muchneeded Heritage Canada grant. Despite the best efforts of Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel ErskineSmith, that Canada 150 Grant, which amounted to roughly $7,300 in funding, could not be obtained in time. In the end, local MPP Arthur Potts along with area resident Michael Rusek and a couple of other community members were able to raise $15,000 to put on a successful East York Canada Day event . Ward 31 Councillor Janet Davis also stepped up to help save the event, which costs roughly $55,000 to put on each year. And while the City of Toronto has been a longtime partner of the celebration, she said this year it

well as the cost of the parks permit, insurance, and the fireworks show. The Parks, Forestry and Recreation Department also provided games and activities to fill the void from the

midway, which didn’t happen this past summer. For 2018, organizers are expecting a much-different outcome. "With renewed energy from new volunteers and an

expected increase of community sponsorship and donations, we’re planning for the 2018 edition to be one of the best yet, attracting 40,000 to 60,000 people of all ages and from all walks of life and places of origin," the East York Canada Day Corporation said in an Aug. 21 release. "We’ve raised our target for donations and sponsorship revenues and are getting an early start on organizing for 2018 in order to enhance an already great event with even more attractions." Monetary donations are also needed. People can support the celebration by making a contribution to the event’s GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/canada-daycelebration. For more information, visit www.eycdc.ca or contact chair Shannon TimmsUgochukwu at eycanadadayparade@hotmail.com or 416-524-5363.

Toronto Pearson:

International Noise Benchmarking and Best Practices Report Launch

NEW LOCATION:

Join us on September 27, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Toronto Congress Centre, 650 Dixon Road, Etobicoke, ON, M9W 1J1

for our Community Environment & Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC) meeting for the release of our Noise Management Program Benchmarking and Best Practices Study. What is CENAC?

Why is this important?

CENAC is a forum for discussion between the community and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) on matters relating to aircraft noise and the environmentally responsible operation of Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Toronto Pearson serves Canada’s largest and fastest-growing metropolitan area. The GTAA is committed to managing and reducing the impact of our operations and is reviewing a range of ambitious targets and actions to reduce the impact on GTA residents. Our updated five-year Noise Management Action Plan will be released this winter following a year of detailed study and consultations. Understanding international best practices is an important step in the development of this plan.

What can you expect to learn? In 2016, the GTAA hired UK aviation consultant Helios to undertake a Noise Management Program Benchmarking and Best Practices study. The study looked at 11 areas of noise management at 26 comparator airports around the world to identify potential new programs to be adopted at Toronto Pearson. This is the release of the report’s findings. There will be opportunities to speak with experts, including Toronto Pearson staff. This meeting is not focused on decisions around runway usage.

How do I RSVP? Visit www.torontopearson.com/noisemanagement to register and to learn more about CENAC and the GTAA’s important noise consultations and studies.

ABOUT US

Legacy continues with Invictus Games The Toronto International Film Festival may have wrapped up last weekend, but Toronto has kept the red carpet rolled out with the Invictus Games about to take over. If there’s anyone that deserves the spotlight, it’s these soldiers and veterans - about 550 of them from 17 allied nations - who will take part in the event which kicks off with the opening ceremonies Saturday night. Competition takes place from Sunday through to the closing ceremonies the following Saturday night. The nations involved have all asked a lot of their armed forces. For those of us who live in a democracy, such as Canada, we have the privilege and responsibility to question our political leaders - past, present and future - whether the right decisions have been made in the deployment of our troops. What should never be up for debate is the support we must always have for those troops - the men and women we have sent, and continue to send, into harm’s way on our behalf. For Canada, that commitment includes being a part of the Global Coalition against Daesh in Iraq on the heels of a more than 12-year deployment in Afghanistan. These athletes, according to organizers, "have become ill or injured during or as a direct consequence of their service." You can bet they will try to win their events, but they have already won, in some cases hard earned battles, just by participating. Supporters are welcome to check out their efforts. There are some free events. Watch wheelchair tennis at Nathan Phillips Square, archery at Fort York, cycling in High Park, golf at St. George’s Golf and Country Club as well as the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, which is being held on a special course being built on the parking grounds adjacent to the Distillery District. Ticketed events (most at a very reasonable $25) include athletics at York University, swimming at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough and, at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens), indoor rowing, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Beware, some sessions have already sold out. The Invictus Games follow on the heels of this summer’s successful North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) for Indigenous youth. Both events benefited from the facilities bequeathed to us by The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Arguably, this is a much better use of our resources than an Olympics could ever be.

The urban heroes you don’t know about We live with heroes in Toronto, but we don’t know who they are. I met one, Martha Nyame, in Rexdale. From a village in Ghana called Abosamso, she never attended school. Her family was too poor. After emigrating to Canada, she returned to Abosamso in 1994 and saw many children that she knew faced a sad childhood like hers were uneducated. So, she changed their future. What was to be a family home became an orphanage and free school. In Toronto, Nyame worked two jobs and sent every dollar and box of supplies she could to Abosamso. "Even $5 is money," she says. More than 100 children

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto were housed and taught at Abosamso, even as fibromyalgia and arthritis advanced in Nyame to the point where she can’t work anymore. Last week, she made an agonized decision to close the school - only 18 orphans will remain there - and I was struck by how few people outside Abosamso knew what Nyame had done for more than 20

José Alberto Flores, vice-principal of a Catholic secondary school in Bloor West Village, buys breakfasts for students who can’t afford it, bringing the food to class. "Each student has a story," he says. Sharon Nyarko is a hero too. The University of Toronto Scarborough student, who’s been depressed, made a short film, Beyond Words, to chal-

Sometimes it’s because of their faith, and sometimes because they recognize people around them are human beings who need help. They didn’t seek this recognition. Age Well, Live Well

SPONSORED BY HOME INSTEAD

Alzheimer’s Learning Day:

Educating The Beaches

one form or another of this disease today.*

If we all wish to age well, we need to be aware of not only changes in our general health and well-being, but also about those conditions which are prevalent amongst the senior community and which may impact us in one way or another. Far too often, we dismiss changes in either ourselves or a loved one’s behaviour as simply slowing down or having a bad day, but often these signs are symptomatic of bigger issues which need to be investigated thoroughly. Memory loss, for example, is often incorrectly regarded as a normal part of the aging process. In reality, however, it could be an indicator of the presence of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. In fact, as our population ages, more and more Canadians will be impacted by the disease. By 2038, it is estimated that 1.13 million Canadians will suffer from dementia, up from the approximate 500,000 that are suffering from

As the number of Canadians living with dementia increases so too does the need for public education and both professional and family caregivers. Like cancer, this disease is likely to leave no family untouched and we all need to educate ourselves on the risks, prevention techniques, treatment and support options that are available to anyone who is afflicted with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. To help raise awareness and provide access to local public education programs, Home Instead Senior Care is asking members of the Beaches community to participate in the organization’s Alzheimer’s Learning Day on September 26. With September being World Alzheimer’s Month, it’s the perfect time to learn, educate and share knowledge around Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. To participate in Alzheimer’s learning day you can simply dedicate 5, 30 or 60 minutes of your time to reading an online article, taking an e-learning class or

attending an online webinar hosted by Home Instead. By undertaking this pledge to learn more, we can all become better at recognizing the risks, understanding the methods of prevention and being able to identify the needs of those living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. There are many firms working diligently and tirelessly on the research and development of treatments and an overall cure, but Home Instead Senior Care has taken the lead in educating and providing people of all ages with resources on understanding and caring for people with dementia based on their own hands-on experience with programs like Alzheimer’s Learning Day. For more information about Home Instead Senior Care’s Alzheimer’s Learning Day and other resources related to Alzheimer’s or dementia, visit AlzLearn.ca or call 416-698-1384. Hearing aids can improve your hearing and your life

FREE

Hearing Aid Trial

“ Why do I hear but not understand? ” If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult. The right hearing aid could help you improve your comprehension.

FREE trial offer ends September 29th, 2017 21 Day FREE Trial

Hear the difference hearing aids can make. Try the latest advanced or premium digital hearing aids for 21 days, risk-free. Our hearing experts will perform a FREE hearing assessment and fit you with hearing aids suited to your loss. There’s no cost or obligation to participate.

Nationwide coverage – Over 200 locations across the country.

When you have hearing loss, fewer sounds reach your brain. To make sense of these sounds, your brain has to work harder to understand speech and focus on what is important. Today’s hearing aids do this automatically so you enjoy a richer, more natural hearing experience. You may notice a decrease in listening effort and an increase in your ability to remember what people say to you, even in challenging listening environments like restaurants and social gatherings.

experience the many advantages of today’s advanced hearing aids and ListenUP!
