Du Plessis in no mood to quit Proteas' captaincy

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis ANI Johannesburg, Mar.31 : South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis has ruled out any plans to step down from the post after his side made an early exit from the ongoing World T20 event , saying he is happy captaining the team. Despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites, South Africa once again failed to live up to their reputation as they lost a high-scoring game against England before losing a low-scoring affair against West Indies. However, the Proteas signed off their World T20 campaign with a comfortable eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in their dead rubber contest in Delhi. Labelling the World T20 as a `tough` tournament, Du Plessis admitted that his side failed to produce

at an ICC event, but believes that it was unfair to heap doom and gloom on the side when they were rebuilding in all the formats of the game. The 31-year-old, who is aiming to lead the side at the next event in 2019, insisted that he was loving playing T20 cricket at the moment and stressed that he also see himself playing a big role in the team's success, Sport24 reported. The skipper further insisted that his side had the required bowling and batting options, adding that they were just needed to make the right move at the right time. Apart from their Champions Trophy victory in 1998, South Africa have never bagged a major ICC tournament title since their post-apartheid return in 1991.

Warne takes swipe at Oz selectors post World T20 exit ANI Johannesburg, Mar.31 : Australian spin great Shane Warne has slammed his country's selectors, saying that the `wrong` choices in the batting line-up had led to their early exit from the ongoing World T20. Steve Smith's side knocked out of prestigious T20 tournament after suffering a six-wicket defeat at the hands of hosts India in do-or-die group match at the Punjab Cricket Stadium in Mohali on Sunday. The 46-year-old believes that Australian selectors had messed up with the batting line-up instead of sticking with the proven combinations and consequently the team failed to perform well enough,Sport24 reported. Earlier, Australian selectors had moved David Warner up and down in the batting line-up. They had also dropped Aaron Finch for the opening matches

Australian spin great Shane Warne of the tournament at the expense of Usman Khawaja. Reflecting on the same, Warne stressed that the opening pair of Finch and David Warner should not have been broken up, saying that the decision had upset the balance of the team. Pointing out that the duo were more destructive than Khawaja, Warnesaid that the partnership

between Finch and Warner would have been an intimidatory factor. England have already qualified for the World T20 finals after their seven-wicket win over New Zealand. They will now play in the summit showdown with either India or West Indies at Eden Garden's in Kolkata on Sunday.

England batsman Jason Roy opening-match defeat to West Indies. "The whole team have got that kind of licence and

that opportunity to go out there, do what they want and play freely with our skills," Roy was quoted as

saying by ecb.co.uk. Reflecting on his strategy, the opener said that he had decided to give his side with a good start in order to make it easy for the middle-orders to chase down the target. England are now short of one victory to clinch their second World T20 title as they will play either India or West Indies in Sunday's final at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Shiva qualifies for Rio Games, heartbreak for Mary Kom New Delhi, Mar 31: World Championships bronze-medallist Shiva Thapa (56kg) on Thursday became the first Indian boxer to make the cut for this year's Olympics by entering the Asian Qualifying Tournament's final but the celebrated M C Mary Kom (51kg) failed to book her Rio Games ticket after losing in the last-four stage here. Shiva, given the top seeding in his weight category, lived upto the billing as he sailed past 2013 World Championship bronze-medallist Kairat Yeraliyev of Kazakhstan in the semifinal. He will face second seed Chatchai Butdee of Thailand in the final on Friday. With today's victory, the 22year-old Indian is set for his second Olympic appearance, four years after he became the youngest boxer to qualify for the multi-sporting extravaganza. "I want to thank god for having managed to achieve this. I was very worked up about

this bout, it was the most important bout for me. So I am totally exhausted and relieved at the same time," Shiva told PTI. "I have very little time at hand for rest and recovery as the final bout is tomorrow itself. So, it's slowly sinking in. I can't thank enough my coaches and all those who supported me in this journey. I hope to come good on expectations this time by winning an Olympic medal," he said. However, it was heartbreak for another top seed, Mary Kom, who went down to old foe Ren Cancan of China in the semifinals, which will only translate into a bronze medal for her. In the women's category, only the gold and silver medal winners from this tournament will qualify for Rio Olympics. The five-time world champion and London Olympics bronze-medallist, however, has another chance of qualifying for the Rio Games during the World Championships

in May. Another Indian in fray in the men's draw was Commonwealth Games silver-medallist and fourth seed L Devendro Singh (49kg) but he lost to top seed Rogen Ladon of Mongolia in the semifinals. Assured of a bronze medal, Devendro will now fight it out for an Olympic quota place by taking on Mongolia's thirdseeded Gan-Erdene Gankhuyag tomorrow. National coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu was effusive in his praise for Shiva, while also lauding the effort of other boxers. "It was a very sensible, very planned, and very aggressive performance. His opponent was actually running around to save himself. It was a class performance and one of the best bouts of the day," Sandhu said. "Shiva has matured tremendously and this was evident in his performance so far," he added.
