Dear Dunham Family, WHEN FAITH BECOMES SIGHT! At our recent board retreat, Princeton Bardwell shared the history of the school for new and returning board members. It was a hugely significant and poignant moment as Princeton took the opportunity to describe the faith journey of the founders in praying for and sustaining the then Chapel School.

As we enter our 37th year as The Dunham School, the faith of the founders has become sight. Perfect scores on the ACT, highly competitive college placement, five students in the National Merit Scholarship Program, 26 Advanced Placement Scholars, four State Championships, the Brown-Holt Chapel Arts Center, and an unwavering commitment to Christ and to our mission to educate both the mind and the heart, all serve as evidence of God’s faithfulness.

Enclosed are the stories not just of student, alumni, and faculty successes, but of God’s faithfulness to complete his plan for The Dunham School. The great news that is contained within these pages is a testimony to God’s faithfulness, but lest we forget, also a challenge to us all to continue to press on and run the race in order to win the prize. The current culture of The Dunham School is the reflection of the God-given vision of the founders. We strive to realize the full potential of each child, pour into them daily, and aim for excellence in every facet of school life.

I pray that we continue to press on and give God all the praise, honor, and glory for all that we see achieved with the faith of ordinary men and women.

Remembering Donald Tabb:

Cowboy-Turned-Pastor Leaves a Lasting Legacy

On May 2, 2018, Reverend Donald Tabb, pastor emeritus of The Chapel on the Campus and a founder of The Dunham School, passed away in a boating accident, while doing one of his favorite things—fishing in one of his favorite places with his college roommate and lifelong friend, Jack Frey.

Reverend Tabb was more than a fisherman, however; he was also a fisher of men. A native of Albany, Texas, the former rodeo champion, Army Ranger, Texas cattleman, and self-proclaimed cowboy-turned-evangelist-and-preacher dedicated his life to Christ in service to the gospel. After serving in the ministry with both The Navigators and Lost Valley Ranch, Reverend Tabb returned to the Texas cattle industry before joining the staff of the Methodist Foundation of North Texas and, finally, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, where he trained counselors for many of the Billy Graham Crusades for nearly eight years.

Reverend Tabb and his wife, Mary, moved to Baton Rouge in 1970 as part of the advance team for the Billy Graham Crusade held at Tiger Stadium. Enchanted with the people and culture of South Lousiana, the Tabbs decided to make Baton Rouge their home. Two years later, Reverend Tabb became the founding pastor of the Chapel On The Campus, where he served as senior pastor until 2002. As pastor emeritus, he continued to serve the church and the community as an itinerant preacher, missionary, teacher, discipler, and founder of the Jabez Foundation, a disaster relief and scholarship ministry.

In 1979, when the need for a Christian school in Baton Rouge became apparent to several church elders and their families, they approached Reverend Tabb, seeking prayer and wisdom.

Together they prayed about founding a college preparatory school with Christ at the center. It was both a lofty goal and a God-sized task, truly a step of faith.

It was at this point, contends Head of School Steve Eagleton, that the fate of The Dunham School hung in the balance. “If Donald Tabb had taken the position that prayerful efforts to start a school were too grand, ill-conceived, too costly, or too burdensome, there would not have been a Chapel School or,

now, The Dunham School,” he says.

The Chapel School began in 1981, housed at the Chapel on the Campus, laying the foundation for The Dunham School as it exists today. Through every stage from inception to present day, Donald and Mary displayed their unwavering support for the school, actively participating in the life of the Dunham community.

“When I think of Donald Tabb’s impact on our school,” says former Admissions Director Linda Spear, “James 5:16 quickly comes to mind. ‘The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.’ His impact? Simply stated, he always prayed for us; his prayers on our behalf ‘availeth much.’ ” In May 2017, the school invited Reverend Tabb to open the National Day of Prayer Chapel, where he was presented with the PAIDEIA Award for Pastoral Support of Christian Schooling— a fitting tribute to his dedication and service to the school that meant so much to him. In accepting the award, Reverend Tabb addressed the family, friends, students, and faculty who gathered in his honor, saying, “You are fulfilling the dream of five ordinary men who got down on our knees to ask God to help us start a school that would honor Him and teach our children the things that needed to be taught. God has answered that prayer.

It is my privilege to be associated with what I believe is one of the greatest schools in America—The Dunham School.”

to put their faith in Christ. “It is unbelievable to me what God can do and what He will do in answering the prayers of the simplest of His saints.

Believe me, no matter how old you are or young you are, if you put your trust in Jesus Christ, He will forgive your sins and make you part of His forever family.

Then the great adventure begins in a conversation between the living God and a trusting soul.”

Reverend Tabb is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Tabb; daughter Cherry Tabb and husband Dr. Sheldon Herzig; daughter Cynthia Tabb LeBlanc; daughter Candy Tabb Wilhite ’89; son James Tabb and wife Milena; daughter Catherine Tabb ’96; and nine grandchildren and step-grandchildren, including Christine LeBlanc ’02, Robert LeBlanc ’04, and Taylor LeBlanc ’04. A memorial service celebrating his life and legacy was held on May 14, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at LSU. Perhaps the sweetest of all tributes to Reverend Tabb this spring came through the voices of our Lower School choir students as they sang “Pass It On,” one his favorite songs, sung frequently at The Chapel on the Campus and at Dunham graduation.

So Many Stories, So Little Time

Author and playwright Alys Murray ’13 blows a kiss to Mr. Darcy, one of her favorite Jane Austen characters.

The London campus of New York University is housed in a cluster of old Victorian homes whose old charms—classic chandeliers, fireplaces, and fixtures—now serve a more modern function. One blustery winter day in December 2015, as Alys Murray ’13 sat in a drafty, grand drawing room now converted to a college classroom, an idea began to take shape.

“I was thinking that Dickens’ A Christmas Carol could have been set in any one of these buildings, and I started writing, ” she says. “As the idea grew, I knew I wanted to marry classical styles with modern characters, so setting a sweet Christmas love story in the middle of a modern-day Charles Dickens Christmas fair seemed like the perfect way to do it.”

That story became Alys’ debut novel, The Christmas Company.

Hallmark Publishing plans to release the book during the 2018 holiday season with the option to produce the book as a TV movie for their 2019 Christmas movie lineup on the Hallmark channel.

Alys didn’t start out to write a Hallmark book or TV movie.

“Once finished, I knew my book was a perfect fit for Hallmark,” she says. “I submitted it, hoping that it would become a TV movie, but I didn’t dare let myself believe it would happen. Now, it looks like The Christmas Company may appear on TV screens next Christmas.”

As a sophomore directing student at NYU, Alys received acclaim for a play she wrote for a class assignment. Encouraged by her professor, she applied and was one of six young playwrights selected for a semester-long, prestigious program with

New York University, the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Alys completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama at NYU’s London campus in 2017 and remains there, pursuing a master’s in film studies at King’s College.

A prolific writer, Alys is rarely at a loss for ideas. Current projects include Tea and A Cowboy, the first novella in a three book series, recently purchased by Wild Rose Press; Love Songs for Cynics, the first book in The Animos Society Series, currently out on submission; the Full Bloom series, a modern reimagining of three Jane Austen classics; The Big Dance, a play set in World War II based on an astounding true story; and the sequel to The Christmas Company, due out in December 2019.

“Every book idea is an exciting adventure. I love finding those characters or story arcs that really resonate with people. When someone really feels one of my books, it makes all the long hours at the keyboard worth it.” Alys says.

These days, Alys is writing the next chapter of her own story with fiancé Adam Davies, planning their 2019 summer wedding in New Orleans.

These accomplished young men and women gained acceptance at 73 colleges and universities across the United States and abroad, set a new school record by earning more than $8 million in scholarship offers, and collectively devoted 7,545 hours in community service efforts during the last four years.

SURROUNDED BY FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND FACULTY, the Class of 2018 made the transition from Dunham students to alumni on May 19. The 76 members of last year’s graduating class excelled individually as scholars, athletes, artists, leaders, and compassionate servants, making a lasting contribution to the Dunham community through the energy, enthusiasm, and dedication they brought to our campus each day. We are excited about the opportunities that await these graduates and look forward to watching them continue to excel as Dunham alumni in college and career.

2018 Valedictorian Harshita Rachamallu completed her six years at Dunham with a 4.33 grade point average. An AP Scholar with Distinction, Harshi received scholarship offers worth approximately $395,072.

She now attends Tulane University, where she plans to pursue a double major in cellular and molecular biology.

2018 Salutatorian Savannah Tanguis finished her high school career with a 4.29 grade point average. An AP Scholar, Savannah earned approximately $678,596 in scholarship offers, including the prestigious Manship Scholarship at Louisiana State University, where she plans to major in mass communication with a concentration in political communication.

DUAL ENROLLMENT: COLLEGE CREDIT TRANSLATES INTO BIG SAVINGS

Dunham students earned 250 college credit hours through dual enrollment in 2017-2018.

D

UNHAM GRADUATES ARE BETTER PREPARED for college than ever before as Upper School students take advantage of increasing opportunities to earn college credit, as well as tuition savings, through the school’s dual enrollment partnership with LSU. Dunham currently offers eight dual enrollment classes in college-level math, foreign language, and Introduction to Engineering Design. By enrolling in these dual enrollment classes, Upper School students may earn credit hours toward their future college degrees while also completing the requirements for their high school diplomas.

These honors-level classes taught at Dunham are primarly entry-level college courses that include the same content and assessments as those taught on the LSU campus. Credit hours earned are transferable to most accredited colleges and universities.

During the 2017-2018 school year, 50 Dunham students earned a collective total of 250 college credit hours, worth approximately $227,000 in college tuition. When combined with AP course credit, the college tuition savings can quickly add up. For example, the Class of 2018 earned 647 college credit hours through dual enrollment and AP classes, translating into nearly $588,708 in college tuition.

This past year, the majority of students earned As in their dual enrollment courses, with no student earning below a B. For the past seven years, Dunham dual enrollment students have boasted a 100 percent pass rate, compared to 76 percent for college sections at LSU. Increasing college readiness is a key academic priority at Dunham. By offering college course content taught by a Dunham teacher, the school is able to ensure that students enter college with a strong GPA, confident and better prepared for next-level courses.

Alyssa Sharbaugh ’18 Named National Merit Scholar

Alyssa Sharbaugh ’18 has been named a 2018 National Merit Scholar in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship program. Selected from a pool of 15,000 National Merit Finalists based on her abilities, skills, and accomplishments, Alyssa has joined a select group of 7,500 academically talented high school students from the Class of 2018 who have received National Merit Scholarships from colleges, universities, and corporate sponsors.

Alyssa is Dunham’s second National Merit Scholar in two years, following in the footsteps of Gabby Walker ’17, who received the award last spring. Alyssa completed her high school academic career with a 4.306 grade point average. She was also named as a 2017 Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar and was a member of the National Honor Society. In total, Alyssa received $836,900 in collegiate scholarship offers, including the National Merit Louisiana State University Scholarship. She now attends LSU and plans to major in biology in preparation for a career in veterinary medicine.

Lex Landreneau ’22 Receives National Outstanding Achievement Award

Last spring, Lex Landreneau ’22 received the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Outstanding Achievement Award. Lex, who has been an NJHS member since the sixth grade and served as president of the Dunham chapter in eighth grade, will receive $500 to be placed in a college savings account.

This annual award recognizes 500 exceptional NJHS members nationwide. Local chapter advisers nominate current NJHS members who have demonstrated excellence in the five pillars of NJHS: scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. Lex follows in the footsteps of Raveena Vij ’21, who received the award last year.

says, “Lex displays all of the traits of a National Junior Honor Society member. From his involvement with activities at Dunham to his numerous extracurricular activities, he represents what a well-rounded NJHS member should be. He never fails to offer a helping hand, whether that be with a service project or leading an NJHS meeting. Lex truly is an outstanding member!”

Lex enjoys the service aspect of NJHS, especially the Laundry Love project, which is aimed at helping those who do not have access to laundry detergent or a Laundromat. “My favorite part of NJHS is that we are able, with our friends, to help those who need it. I am so honored to receive this award, and I would like to thank Mrs. Bove for guiding me throughout NJHS,” says Lex.

The NHS and NJHS are both international student organizations founded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Students are selected for membership on the basis of outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship, and service.

Congratulations to Parker Harris ’19 and Luke Russell ’19 who both earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. As the leading college admissions test, the ACT measures what students learn in high school to determine their academic readiness for college with multiple choices tests covering four skill areas: English, math, reading and science. Each area is scored on its own scale of 1 to 36. A student’s composite test score is the average of those parts. On average, less than one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT earn a perfect score.

Future Ready: Lower School Students Rise to #ForwardThinking Challenge Our Lower School students proved they have innovative ideas about what amazing and practical inventions may play a daily role in their futures.

In March, Lower School students were challenged to create something that may exist in 2030 for the #ForwardThinking Competition. Imaginative student submissions included a variety of products and robots.

Educators from around the world voted via social media for the most innovative projects.

The Dunham winners were recognized during a Lower School Chapel this spring. Top projects included a Jet Pack created by kindergartner Tyson Sink, the Stay Fresh Container designed by third-grader Katherine McDonald, and a Robot With Remote Katherine McDonald ’27 Camille Istre ’26 Control invented by fourth-grader Camille Istre.

Congratulations are also in order for our other #ForwardThinking Lower School project designers, including Bert Blanchard (kindergarten), Alex Gustafson (second grade), Jack Istre (first grade), Alexa Lewis (fourth grade), Brittni Pafford (PK4), Amelia Sink (second grade), and John Sink (kindergarten).

Middle School Students Create a Buzz at Regional History Bee Fifteen Dunham Middle School students flexed their history muscles in the 2018 Regional History Bee held in New Orleans this spring, with 13 students qualifying to advance to the National History Bee this summer in Atlanta. Eighth-grader Paul Landry was the regional champion for his grade level, with classmate Lex Landreneau placing second.

Dunham Scientists Win Big at Regional and State Science Fairs

Four eighth-grade scientists were big winners at the Region VII Science Fair held in February at LSU. Maddie Benton won the overall prize in the junior division for her project, “How Vessel Size Affects Bacterial Growth,’’ which also captured first place in the Microbiology category. Patrick Murphy placed second in Microbiology, with Sarah Brady taking home a first place ribbon in Physics and Astronomy and Caroline Latuso claiming fourth place in Biomedical and Health Sciences.

In addition, Patrick and Maddie each received the Naval Science Award, given by the U.S Navy and Marine Corps to four students whose projects are considered to demonstrate excellence in science and engineering. Maddie was one of two students who received the U.S Air Force Award, given to recognize and encourage students who are conducting research in areas of interest to the Air Force.

As a result of their top finishes in the regional fair, Maddie, Patrick, and Sarah were selected as nominees for Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars), the premier science and engineering competition for middle school students. They also qualified to advance to the Louisiana State Science and Engineering Fair, where Patrick won first place with his project, “Teenagers vs. Healthcare Workers: Whose Phones Contain More Bacteria?” and Maddie received a third place award for her microbiology project.

Dunham students proved they were strong competitors at the 2018 District Literary Rally held at Southeastern Louisiana University this spring. Of the 53 Middle and Upper School students representing Dunham, 28 were district qualifiers, seven received Freshman Scholastic Achievement Awards by placing first in their subjects, and 21 qualified to advance to the State Literary Rally in April, where three students claimed top awards.

SERTOMA ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS Seventh-graders Rachel Stanger and Renden Street, pictured below with Middle School English teacher Gerri Bove, were winners in the Sertoma Club’s “What Freedom Means To Me” essay contest. This year, 116 essays were submitted from five different schools in East Baton Rouge Parish. From those entries, four winners were selected.

Nikole Blanchard Shares Stage with Apple CEO Tim Cook In March, Apple CEO Tim Cook recognized The Dunham School as a national leader in technology at the much-anticipated Apple Keynote event in Chicago.

Dunham’s Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard was one of only three educators invited to share their schools’ technology journeys on the national stage with Apple. During her presentation, Nikole focused on the impact of professional learning on student achievement and even featured a video on mitosis created

by Dunham seventh-graders James Baldwin and Samantha Donadieu.

Under Nikole’s leadership, Dunham has received six consecutive Apple Distinguished School awards, given for “visionary leadership, exemplary learning environments, ongoing professional development and educational innovation.” Dunham is believed to be the only school in the nation to hold six awards, as well as the first to have 100 percent of its faculty complete the Apple Teacher Program.

Joey Thibodeaux Named 2018 Liz Peters Master Teacher

During his 35 years at Dunham, Joey Thibodeaux has faithfully served the school in a myriad of roles—algebra teacher, dean of students, P.E. teacher, head football and baseball coach, and athletic director, to name a few. During the school’s commencement exercises on May 19, Coach Thibodeaux added a new role to the list when he was named the 2018 Liz Peters Master Teacher.

The annual award, named for the late Liz Peters, who was the school’s first employee and a master teacher herself, recognizes outstanding teachers who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom.

Though well known as a talented coach who led the Tiger football team to a State Championship in 2004 and received

recognition as Coach of the Year at the district, parish, and state level, Joey Thibodeaux’s impact in his algebra classroom overshadows his numerous coaching accomplishments.

“Alumni often return to the school, seeking out Coach Thib and reminiscing about him being the ‘best algebra teacher in the world.’ It is rare that an individual has such varied gifts and talents to share with his students, but Joey is one of those rare individuals,” says Head of School Steve Eagleton. “He continues to demonstrate the Master Teacher characteristics of lifelong learning and leadership and consistently seeks to improve his pedagogy. I can think of no more consistent example of one who, in his teaching, exemplifies the mission of The Dunham School.”

JAZZ BAND Earlier this year, the Dunham Jazz Band, led by former band director John Gray, performed in the prestigious Fortier-Gerbrecht Jazz Invitational Concert at The Manship Theater, where the group was recognized as one of the “outstanding ensembles from the Baton Rouge area, known for delivering stellar jazz performances.” The Jazz Band was also invited to play at the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast in April.

In March, original works by Dunham artists Nina Anweiler ’19, Jenna Johnson ’18, and Ciara Venable ’20 were on display in the Foster Gallery on the LSU campus as part of the 4th Annual Statewide Juried Art Exhibition for high school students.

Using a variety of elements, Ciara, Jenna, and Nina created original artwork reflective of their individual styles and focus areas, including photography, fabric, collage, and mixed media.

At the conclusion of the exhibit, Ciara’s mixed media piece, “Kiss,” was awarded Honorable Mention.

The opportunity to participate in this exhibit represented a unique opportunity for these talented artists, all students of Upper School Art teacher Nicole Cotten Callac ’08. “Because this is a statewide juried art show, these girls competed with student artists across Louisiana to have their artwork accepted into the Gallery. This gives them a taste of what it is really like to exhibit in a gallery show,” Callac explains. “Because the artwork is also for sale, there’s an opportunity for them to make money from their work.”

Each year, the LSU School of Art, in conjunction with the LSU College of Art & Design, hosts an annual exhibition to showcase selected works from the finest artistic student talent from all areas of the state. The goal of the show is to inspire young artists by providing a platform for their work to be displayed in a contemporary gallery setting, thus giving them a taste of professional experience.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Following in the footsteps of swimmer Miles Jantzi ’18 who claimed two individual state swimming titles last fall, Dunham winter and spring athletes brought home three more state championship titles in basketball, tennis, and wrestling.

One year after a heartbreaking loss in the final game of the 2017 state championship game, the boys basketball team stormed the court to claim the 2018 LHSAA Division III State Championship, winning 49-48 over hometown rival Episcopal in the final two seconds of a nail-biter of a game.

On the road to their Marsh Madness win, the Tigers also grabbed their third consecutive District 8-2A Championship.

WRESTLING Under the direction of co-head coaches Kirk Wilson ’15 and Randy Leindecker, Grant Rabel ’19 won the second individual state title of his career, claiming the LHSAA Division III State Wrestling Championship in the 195-lbs. weight class. After becoming the first eighth-grader in LHSAA history to win a state title in 2015, Grant was a state runner-up his freshman year. Although an injury kept him from competing in his sophomore year, Grant came back strong as a junior as part of a small wrestling team that also included Johnny Green ’21 and Andrew McFeaters ’19. In addition to his state championship title, Grant also emerged as the victor in the City Wrestling Championship.

were named District Co-MVPs. Oddyst and Jordan were also named to the All-District First Team along with Ralph Davenport ’19, Ty Spurlock ’19, and Salle Wilson ’20. Mason Bourgeois ’18, recipient of Dunham’s 2018 Sportsmanship Award, was named as an Academic All-State Athlete and received All-District Honorable Mention.

Following their championship win, Louisiana State Representative Franklin Foil presented a state resolution at the Capitol commending the Tigers for their spectacular season.

BOYS TENNIS Youth helped serve up a title for the boys tennis team on the final day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Tennis tournament. Coached by Ronnie Walters and Chad Myers ’97, the team, composed of mostly underclassmen, scored 8.5 points to edge Evangel Christian by one point for the Division IV State title at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

The doubles team of Hayden Dudley ’19 and Kyle Pastor ’19 lost in the state finals but helped score enough points to help the team secure the overall victory. Michael Dudley ’22 and Oren Gleason ’20 reached the doubles semifinals. As a result of their stellar performances this season, Hayden and Michael Dudley, Oren Gleason, and Kyle Pastor were named to the All-Metro Team. Noah Fair ’18 was named an Academic All-State Athlete.

TIGERS ADVANCE TO DIVISION III STATE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT Head baseball coach Sham Gabehart describes his team this way, “Collective greatness, by the sum of all the parts.”

Thanks to all the parts—hot bats, cool pitching, smart base running, and capitalizing on their opponent’s errors—the Tigers claimed the District Championship and then won the Division III best-of-three quarterfinal round series to advance to state tournament for the first time since 2011. Although the team fell to top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas in the semifinals, the 2017-2018 season saw the Tigers go undefeated in district play, winning 30 games for the first time in school history thanks to an outstanding group of athletes, many of whom received All-District and All-Metro honors (see page 31). TIGERS WIN!

What is success? So many today look at the outcome and determine winners and losers, but perhaps legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden had the best perspective, defining success not as winning on the scoreboard but as a “self-satisfaction” that only comes from knowing you did your best to become the best you could become. This winter and spring, our Dunham Tigers experienced success at both levels, on and off the scoreboard.

TRACK AND FIELD Coach Tim Jorgensen and Coach Kate Cramer helped guide our athletes this spring. Ciara Venable ’20 set the school record in the 800m to qualify for the LHSAA State Track Meet held at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium, where John Walker McDonald ’22 finished third in the 3200m and fifth in the 1600m races, and Sophie Moreaux ’19 broke her own school record in the 300m hurdles to finish in second place.

IN GOLF, the boys’ team was led

by Ryan Dupuy ’21, who finished the season as the individual district runner-up. Ryan was named to The Advocate’s All-Metro team along with Chris Haaga ’18 and John Collier Thornton ’21. The girls team sent two competitors, Julia Spell ’19 and Jessica Williams ’19, to the metro tournament for the first time in more than four years.

GIRLS BASKETBALL was at its finest this year with our fierce Lady Tigers crowned as District Champions for the first time since 1996. Coach Chad Myers ’97 was named District Coach of the Year, and Hannah Barrow ’18 and Sophie Moreaux ’19 were named the MVP and Defensive MVP of the district.

DUNHAM TIGERS READY TO COMPETE AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL Hannah Barrow ’18, Nick Harris ’18, and Miles Jantzi ’18 signed national letters of intent before family, friends, and classmates during a ceremony held on campus last spring.

Hannah will continue her basketball career at Washington and Lee University. An LHSAA Academic All-State Athlete, Hannah was unanimously selected as the All-District MVP, named to the All-District 1st Team, and received Dunham’s Scholastic Athlete award this spring.

Nick will play baseball at LSU-Eunice, home of five-time NCJAA National Champions. The senior catcher helped lead the Tigersharks to the state tournament, was named an LHSAA Academic All-State Athlete, as well as All-District MVP and member of the All-District 1st Team.

Miles will swim at St. Peter’s University in New Jersey. During his LHSAA high school career, Miles earned six individual Division IV State Championships and was named Division IV Outstanding Male Swimmer of the Meet for three consecutive years. Miles received the Male Athlete of the Year Award at Dunham’s sports convocation this spring.

Fresh off the state basketball championship win, Tiger guard Jordan Wright spent spring break playing his way through Germany with a USA Select basketball team. The international tour experience checks another box on Jordan’s impressive basketball resumé. Recruiters from basketball programs at Stanford, Georgetown, Harvard, and Minnesota have shown serious interest in the 6’5” rising senior who has already received solid offers from several schools, including TCU, Virginia Tech, Tulane, Texas A & M, and Louisiana Tech. As Jordan enters his senior season, Coach Jonathan Pixley expects a steady stream of campus visits by interested coaches.

“Jordan is a true gym rat, talented, extremely coachable with an outstanding work ethic,” says Coach Pixley.

“He is the rare kid who can play basketball at a high, major level with the grades to go to an Ivy League School.”

Jordan knows what he is looking for in the college basketball program that lands his commitment. “I’m looking for a school where I’ll feel at home. Academics will also play a huge role. I want to play at the highest collegiate level possible while working toward a prestigious degree,” says Jordan, who plans to major in business, then go to law school. Unless, of course, basketball calls him to a higher level.

ONCE A TIGER, ALWAYS A TIGER: DEREK STINGLEY COMMITS TO LSU On June 20, senior Derek Stingley, ranked as the nation’s No. 1 2019 football recruit, verbally committed to LSU in a much-anticipated announcement. An outstanding scholar as well as athlete, Derek earned Class 2A all-state honors last season as a junior with 64 tackles, 11 interceptions and six pass break-ups, and received offers from collegiate football programs across the country, including Stanford, LSU, Florida, Alabama, Texas, and Georgia.

In mid-June, he narrowed his choices to just three—Texas, Florida, and LSU—and promised to make a verbal commitment on June 20, also his 17th birthday.

Announcing his decision in video posted to Twitter, Derek said, “Success without dedication is nothing more than luck, and I don’t 30

believe in luck. Dunham gave me the opportunity to play varsity as an eighth-grader, and I never looked back … Every Friday night was an opportunity to execute, to come through for my teammates.”

Following Derek’s announcement, two additional top-ranked players committed to LSU, moving the football program’s 2019 recruitment class up to the no. 3 spot in a national ranking by 24/7 Sports. Derek predicts the class will continue to move up in the rankings. “I would say by the time it’s all said and done, we’re going to be the no. 1 recruitment class to come through. Right now all we have in front of us are Texas A&M and Alabama, but we’ll pass them up,” said Derek in an interview with local news station WAFB.

Mitch McIlwain ’94 and Lauren Haynes Parks ’02 Inducted into Athletics Hall of Fame Multi-sport athletes Mitch McIlwain ’94 and Lauren Haynes Parks ’02 were formally inducted into the Dunham Athletics Hall of Fame during a dinner held in their honor on April 19, 2018, at the Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel. As the newest members of the Hall of Fame, Mitch and Lauren join an elite group of Dunham athletes and coaches who not only excelled in their sports, but also honored God in all they accomplished both on and off the field. Previous inductees include Sean Cangelosi ’96, Chris Barker Chaffin ’92, Reggie Griffith ’99, Todd Kinchen ’87, Cary Koch ’05, and Coach Joey Thibodeaux.

As a Dunham Tiger, MITCH McILWAIN was a multi-sport athlete who excelled on the football field and the baseball diamond. An All-District offensive and defensive football player, Mitch was named defensive MVP of the undefeated district championship football team his senior year. He was named to the All-State and All-District teams in baseball and helped lead the Tigers to a state runner-up finish. He continued his baseball career at Louisiana Tech, where he was a multi-year letterman. Mitch has continued to represent all that The Dunham School was founded upon by serving as a distinguished educator and coach at Dunham since 1999.

In addition to his teaching duties, Mitch previously served as the head baseball coach for the state finalist team and is now chair of the history department, head golf coach, and assistant football coach.

LAUREN HAYNES PARKS excelled in basketball, track and field, and volleyball at Dunham. In basketball, Lauren was a four-year letterman and two-time MVP, who served as team captain and made both the All-Metro and All-District teams. She is the second all-time scorer at Dunham and still holds the school record for single game scoring. An All-State track and field star, Lauren finished third in the 200-meter at the state meet and was named team MVP. In volleyball, she was team captain and named to the All-District team twice.

In 2002, she received the Dunham Female Athlete of the Year Award, the Our Lady of the Lake Outstanding Athlete Award, and the United States Army Award for Outstanding Female Athlete. After graduating from LSU, Lauren served as an assistant girls basketball coach at Dunham, helping guide the team to the Final Four.

Faith andService DUNK TO DEFEAT ALS GAMES RAISES $2,463 Varsity basketball team captain Mason Bourgeois ’18 organized a “Dunk To Defeat ALS” benefit during one of the team’s home games in January. Thanks to the generosity of the Dunham community, the team was able to raise $2,463 to help raise awareness about ALS and advance the fight for a cure for the devastating disease that has personally affected several families in the Dunham community. Along with representatives from the ALS Association, we were honored to have as a special guest former WAFB anchor Donna Britt along with the Green, Elofson, Cook, and McIlwain families whose presence reminded us of the courage it takes to fight ALS.

SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK “Awakening,” based on Ephesians 5:14, was the theme for this year’s Spiritual Emphasis Week, a special time for students, faculty, and staff to come together in worship and focus our minds on God. During this week, intentional and inspirational activities across all divisions, including a family worship night and family breakfast, created opportunities for our Dunham community to experience the Lord anew.

DunhamJubilee2018 March 10 was a night to remember as the Dunham community came together to raise funds for Dunham academics, arts, and athletics. Highlights of the evening included fabulous silent and live auction items, as well as a surprise visit from the boys basketball team as they pulled into town fresh from their LHSAA State Championship win. PillarsofPurpose Renovations Underway in Carpenter-Randall Science Center

We would like to thank the Dunham families who graciously opened their homes to the Dunham community during the 2017–2018 school year. A total of six Pillars dinners were hosted this year to share information about the campaign and the vision for the future of the school. We are grateful to the donors who contributed $735,134 in gifts and pledges to the campaign last year. If you would like to make a Pillars donation or are interested in hosting a Pillars dinner, please contact Kinch Cato.

This fall, Dunham students are enjoying new, state-of-the-art lab facilities and equipment in the Carpenter-Randall Science Center. Upgrades to the Upper School biology and chemistry labs will enable the school to further develop its growing STEM program and provide students with increased opportunities for hands-on science inquiry and research. These significant improvements were made possible by generous gifts from Laurie Randall Duchmann and her mother, Erica Carpenter, and Courtney and Brian Murphy, in addition to their support of the Pillars Campaign.

Phase II of the Science Center renovations will include upgrades to the physics, physical science, and environmental/life science classrooms, and the middle school science labs. Private Dining Room Renamed in Memory of Tracey Elofson Thanks to a gift from the Elofson family, the private dining room in the Rollins Family Dining Hall has been refurbished and named in memory of Tracey Warren Elofson, the late wife of longtime Dunham trustee Bucky Elofson and beloved mother of four Dunham graduates—Hope ’07, Ashlyn ’11, Megan ’14, and Kathleen ’18.

In April, Tracey’s family and friends gathered in her memory to dedicate the renovated space.

Thank you, Lower School parents, for reaching 100 percent participation in the 2017–2018 Annual Giving Campaign.

DUNHAM PARENTS SHOWED UNPRECEDENTED SUPPORT of the 2017–2018 Annual Giving Campaign, setting a new school record for pledges and gifts by reaching 95 percent overall parent participation. Lower School parents also set a new record by reaching 100 percent participation. This is the first time in school history that parents in any division have met this milestone.

The Dunham School has continued to thrive thanks to the parents, grandparents, alumni, and other friends whose collective generosity has allowed us to expand the extraordinary academic, fine arts, and athletic programs. Their support has created opportunities that enable our students to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and faith. Bridging the gap between

Ashley Thibodeaux Dawson ’06 always dreamed of being a pediatrician.

However, as a biomedical engineering student at Louisiana Tech University, Ashley’s focus shifted from medical school to orthotics and prosthetics after she observed programs at different facilities.

Orthotics is a medical specialty that focuses on the design, provision and use of artificial devices (i.e. splints and braces); prosthetics deals with artificial limbs. “It is the perfect blend of medicine and engineering,” Ashley says.

In 2011, following her graduation from Tech with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, Ashley enrolled in a masters level certification program at the Northwestern University Prosthetic-Orthotic Center (NUPOC) in Chicago. Two year-long residencies for both orthotics and prosthetics followed her graduation from NUPOC. Now a Certified Prosthetist-Orthotist (CPO), Ashley commutes daily from Baton Rouge to Metairie where her role at Prosthetic & Orthotic Associates of Louisiana (POA) provides both flexibility and growth potential while also satisfying her heart for pediatrics. Because she works closely with several pediatric doctors and physical therapists, 80 percent of her orthotics patients are children, and she also cares for prosthetic patients as young as a year old. “I love working with pediatrics.

There is truly never a dull moment. They inspire me everyday by their determination to overcome whatever obstacles come their way,” Ashley says.

Ashley aspires to make a daily difference in the lives of her patients. “Our motto is ‘the difference between the impossible and the possible lies in your determination,’ ” she says. “We try to embody this in everything we do to encourage our patients to pursue more active lives without limits.”

Every year, POA participates in the Crescent City Classic 10K race to raise money for 50 Legs, which seeks to provide prosthetic care and artificial devices for uninsured and underinsured patients. “It is a special event that we look forward to each year. Many of our patients and family members join us in the run. Since our first race three years ago, POA has raised more than $100,000 for 50 Legs,“ she says proudly.

Ashley and husband Jacob Dawson ’06 are looking forward to their own pediatric adventure with the arrival of their first child, Caleb Daniel, who was born in August.

Ashley’s love for pediatric care is fulfilled by working with her young prosthetics and orthotics patients.

Marc Bratton has taken a new position as a physical therapist at Ochsner Health Systems in Slidell. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where he received a Bachelor of Science in athletic training and Master of Science in exercise physiology. Marc also holds a Bachelor of Science in physical therapy from LSU.
