Dear Dunham Family, AS WE COMPLETE ANOTHER INCREDIBLE YEAR at The Dunham School, we are so thankful for all of the volunteers, donors, parents, students, alumni, teachers and staff that have worked so hard to make this school year so successful!

You will see the fruits of that labor celebrated in the following pages as you read about our students’ amazing academic achievements and the dedicated teachers who guide and instruct them. You will be inspired and awed by the creativity and talent cultivated through the fine arts and the many accomplishments of our 2018–2019 athletes and their coaches.

Most important, I hope you will see that our students continue to receive an invaluable Christian education as they build upon the foundations laid in Lower School and continue to frame and build their academic resume as they move through Middle and Upper School. This is particularly evident among our 2019 seniors who collectively received more than $17 million in college scholarship offers and graduated as one of the most decorated classes in school history.

We give God all the praise, honor, and glory for the successes of all of our students, faculty, and alumni and are thankful for 38 years of dynamic Christian education. I look forward to the continued growth and development of our school and the constant increase in the value proposition year after year.

STEM for the Next Generation

On a cold, sunny day in November, eighth-grade science students and teachers sloshed through the wetlands of the Bonnet Carré Spillway, transplanting more than 600 trees that they had planted and tended in a seedling nursery on the Dunham campus.

“The trees were planted in the Bonnet Carré area to help hold the soil in place as the water runs through it and to provide a suitable habitat for the wildlife that lives there,” says Ed Van Haute, the Middle School STEM teacher who supervised the project. “In addition to planting trees to help our state and coastline, students also gained practical knowledge of our delta, water systems, and flood control in the state.”

The transplantation of the trees marked the completion of a yearlong project, launched in partnership with the LSU Coastal Roots Program that establishes school-based plant nurseries capable of producing native plants Braden Augustus ’23, Gavin Guerin ’23, and Caylin Pixley ’23 plant trees for use in habitat restoration plantings. along the Bonnet Carré Spillway.

Its purpose is to educate students and teachers about the issues of coastal stewardship and sustainability and to involve students in a hands-on habitat restoration project. Through their participation, students learn basic ecological, geologic, and horticultural concepts and skills as they oversee the entire growth cycle of native Louisiana plants from seed germination to the planting of year-old seedlings.

The Dunham Coastal Roots project began in September 2017, when, under the guidance of LSU professors Dr. Pam Blanchard and Dr. Ed Bush, the then seventh-grade students constructed the seedling nursery with its own irrigation system behind the Dunham Athletic Center.

In March 2018, the students also planted catalpa, cypress, and persimmon tree seeds. They were responsible for weeding, fertilizing, thinning, and maintaining the seedlings for the rest of the school year. They also collected data and took regular measurements, including amount of water, tree height, and germination rate, to track the health

and progress of the trees as they grew. Their efforts yielded roughly 600 trees that were added to other native vegetation found on the Bonnet Carré Spillway. The transplanted Dunham trees were tagged with GPS receivers so they can be tracked over time.

A new project cycle began earlier this spring as this year’s seventh-graders planted another crop of persimmon and cherrybark oaks in the seedling nursery.

The interactive, hands-on nature of the Coastal Roots project reflects the current trajectory of STEM studies at Dunham. With engineering design thinking, a practical approach to problem solving, as the STEM centerpiece, the overall goal is to teach students how to make good decisions based on data.

“Our STEM curriculum is changing not what students learn, but how they learn it. When kids know they make a difference, they are more inclined to invest their time. They become Students collect data as their plants mature in the seedling nursery. more engaged in learning and more inclined to think deeper, looking for ways to improve or design changes,” says STEM Director and Math Department Chair Sheri Goings.

“Through partnerships like this one with the LSU Coastal Roots program, our students learn and understand how their actions effect change—in this case the ecology of wetlands,” she adds. “STEM provides tools to explore the world, to gain empathy for others, to solve real problems not limited to math or science applications. Students need to be hands-on. They need to see, feel, touch. Through experimentation, they learn to synthesize, evaluate, and understand data and its relevance, to manipulate it, to discover how to make improvements and make the best choices. Ultimately, they are learning the answer to the question, ‘How does this affect my world?’”

For their part, the students involved in the Coastal Roots project particularly enjoyed the hands-on, collaborative nature of the work. “My favorite part was working together as a team to plant the trees,” says Miruna Apavaloaie ’23.

Her thoughts are echoed by classmate Chloe Byrd ’23, who adds, “Our group had a good rhythm going as we planted the trees. One partner held the bag, one planted the trees, and the other dibbled.”

What students learn through experiences like these carries on beyond a specific project or class. Because of the deeper understanding that evolves from active engagement, students no longer approach science with fear or indifference, but with an open curiosity that increases STEM accessibility. It is a way of thinking that permeates all Middle and Upper School educational experiences.

“We want our students to be more than college-ready. We want them to be lifelong learners. We are laying the groundwork for students to understand the world they live in. We are teaching students to think, analyze, improve, and innovate—not in theory, but in real life,” says Goings.

/ STEM 2020 STEM Goes Global in 2020: Sustainable Living in Germany and Switzerland Dunham’s STEM program goes global with a unique international travel opportunity to Germany and Switzerland, where students and faculty will learn about innovative sustainability efforts as they explore renewable energy

solutions and urban farming, hike through a glacier, and discover an underground city in a nuclear bunker. The trip,

scheduled for June 2020, is open to Middle and Upper School students, who may also earn high school and college credit for the experience. For more information, email sheri.goings@dunhamschool.org.

Artificial Intelligence I explore various AI technologies, I am learning to use new “Asresources that will help me, and ultimately any teacher at Dunham, to more effectively individualize instruction for our students ” .

Middle School science and STEM teacher Ed Van Haute has been chosen to participate in the ISTE-GM Artificial Intelligence Explorations in K-12 School Environments program, joining approximately 500 technology coordinators, computer science teachers, and other educators for an extraordinary professional development experience.

The 30-hour online course focuses on the aspects of AI technologies that have the potential to facilitate and leverage learning, as well as solve real problems in schools and communities. Van Haute has learned about classroom application of AI through presentations, examples of practical uses, tools, and resources for implementation.

“AI is an area of computer science that I find intriguing.

As I deepen my knowledge of this subject, I am always trying to find ways to apply it to my class,” Van Haute says.

“As I explore various AI technologies, I am learning to use new resources that will help me, and ultimately any teacher at Dunham, to more effectively individualize instruction for our students.”

“What an honor for Ed to be selected to participate in this groundbreaking program. I can’t wait to see how he integrates AI into the curriculum,” says Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard. “Opportunities like this keep our school on the cutting edge of innovation and technology.”

Watching the Delta Grow One sunny Saturday morning in early December, Middle School science teacher Sandra Holmes found herself up to her hip waders in the Atchafalaya Swamp gathering lotus pods.

It was just one of the many hands-on activities that Holmes experienced during a two-day Watch the Delta Grow Teacher Workshop, where science teachers from around the state explored the Atchafalaya Basin from top to bottom, discovered how the riverine system serves as a model for coastal restoration efforts in

Louisiana, and learned about proposed coastal restoration projects.

“Professional development opportunities such as these energize me as a teacher and make me want to share even more about the world around us with my students,” Holmes explains. “I want to help them understand how the rivers and wetlands around us impact us as a state, and there is a need to enlighten students about the world in which they live.”

26 Dunham Tigers Named 2018 AP Scholars Twenty-six Dunham students have earned recognition as 2018 Advanced Placement® (AP) Scholars by the College Board® based on their outstanding performances on Advanced Placement (AP) exams.

In May 2018, 76 Dunham students sat for 140 AP exams, with 80 percent earning a score of 3 or higher, making them eligible to receive college credit and/or upper-level college course placement. The average score of all tests taken by Dunham students was 3.46. The 2018 national average was 2.87.

Seniors Parker Harris and Luke Russell Named Candidates in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

The Dunham School is proud to announce that The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selected seniors Parker Harris and Luke Russell as candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program, one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating seniors.

Of the approximately 3.6 million students expected to graduate from high school this spring, Parker and Luke were among only about 4,000 selected as candidates for the prestigious program. A committee of educators reviewed candidates’ academic achievements, leadership and service activities, and personal essays to select some 800 semifinalists announced in April. The final selection of 2019 Presidential Scholars was made in May.

A Dunham student since the second grade, Parker is a National Merit Scholar and an AP Scholar® with Distinction. In addition to earning a perfect score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam, Harris played in the Dunham Jazz Band, competed on the Robotics team, ran varsity cross country, and was a member of Dunham’s Institute of Leadership. He will attend Duke University in the fall.

Luke also earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT and is a National Merit Scholar, as well as an AP Scholar® with Honor.

Enrolled at Dunham since the fourth grade, he served as a senior prefect, was a member of the varsity cross country and soccer teams, and appeared in several Dunham theater productions, including You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown; You Can’t Take It With You; Legally Blonde: The Musical; and Mary Poppins.

Luke will attend LSU in the fall.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by executive order of the President to honor the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Since its inception, the program has recognized more that 7,000 Presidential Scholars who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and service to their schools and communities.

TigerBots Win Robotics Competitions

The Dunham TigerBots claimed a coveted first place trophy at the FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics competition held January 12, 2019, on the Dunham campus.

The TigerBots, all middle school students, won five out of five matches during the qualifying round. As a result, they moved into the double elimination playoff round ranked in first place out of 19 teams, many of which were high school teams.

Fighting their way through the elimination round, the mighty TigerBots emerged as the competition’s overall winners.

Dunham’s TigerBots victors, pictured with robotics coach Ed Van Haute, include seventh-graders Jeremiah Blanchard, Luke Ducote, Brayden LeBlanc, Adrian Raymond, and Gus Van Haute; and sixth-grader Liam Dowling.

The Middle School TigerBots also competed at the regional championship this spring where they were finalists for the Motivate Award.

Dunham Mathletes proved to be fierce competitors in three math competitions this year, particularly at the Baton Rouge High School Math Tournament, where they took third place in overall as a result of superior team and individual performances, and at the Mu Alpha Theta Tournament, where every participant claimed an award.

Upper School Students Launch New Literary Journal

Reed Landry ’19 was searching for an extracurricular activity in tune with his creative bent when he discovered an old issue of the Dunham Literary Journal from 2001. Intrigued, Reed took the initiative to launch a new student club to encourage classmates to showcase their original artwork, poetry, essays, and fiction. Long interested in creative writing, Reed sought and received the blessing for his vision from Upper School Director Amanda McIlwain, then asked English teacher Laura Smith to become the club’s faculty sponsor.

With Smith’s help, Reed recruited classmates to join him, and the new online Dunham Literary Journal Volume 1.1 was born. The club published the first issue of the new journal in early January to rave reviews from classmates, faculty, and administration. A second issue was published in April.

In addition to Reed, members of the journal’s inaugural editorial staff include Olivia Ashley ’19, Daniel Bullock ’20, Garret Jones ’19, Ross Jones ’20, Paul Landry ’22, Samantha Li ’21, Eric Ponder ’19, Suhita Rachamallu ’22, Ally Randall ’19, Victoria Saffell ’20, Catherine Van Haute ’22, and Madeleine Van Haute ’19.

The online format of the journal allows students to easily share their work with family and friends.

Inclusion of original student artwork was inspired by examples of professional literary journals that Smith shared with club members.

“The journal promotes and fosters student creativity,” says Smith.

“Creative writing allows for personal reflection and reinforces many of the analytical skills we practice across disciplines at Dunham.

“Getting to start and lead my own club focused on a topic of interest has been a valuable experience for me in many ways,” says Reed, who will be attending Cornell University in the fall. “People do write in their spare time but might need encouragement or a clear opportunity to do anything with it. Hopefully, the club will inspire those who are writing or thinking of writing to do more of it and send it to us.”

Kari Johnson ’23 Receives National NJHS Award

Dunham eighth-grader Kari Johnson has received the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Outstanding Achievement Award.

Kari is the third consecutive Dunham student to receive this national recognition. She has been an NJHS member since the sixth grade and has served the Dunham NJHS chapter as secretary and as the current president.

“What I enjoy most about NJHS is the Godly character it requires. When we do service projects we have to do it out of our hearts,” Kari says. “In the Bible, it states that ‘the Lord does not look at outward appearance, but he looks at the heart.’ The service projects allow us to use our Godly character to bless the lives of others.”

“Kari is very deserving of this award,” said Dunham NJHS advisor Gerri Bove. “With her academic achievements and many extra curricular activities, she manages her busy schedule well and also makes time to focus on the needs of others. She shows tremendous care in everything she does.”

The NJHS offers this annual Outstanding Achievement Award to help middle school students “jump-start their quest toward higher education.”

Kari will receive a $500 award to be placed in a college savings account.

After acing a written test and an interview with a panel of French and Belgian dignitaries at the annual French Club Convention, senior Emma Davis won a full scholarship to study in Belgium this summer. An accomplished world languages scholar, Emma also placed first in the state on the National Spanish Exam for Spanish VI. Also bringing home honors from the convention were Sydney Boudreaux ’22 and Reagan Courville ’21, who shared first place in the creative writing competition, and Gabriel Bostick ’22, who

was elected as regional president to serve the Baton Rouge area.

Other Dunham francophiles in attendance included Libby Boudreaux ’22, Allyson Mohanty-Aldana ’20, and Keely Slaton ’21, all of whom represented the school and our French program well.

The French Club Convention, sponsored by the Association Louisianaise des Club Francais des Ecole Secondaires (ALCFES), provides opportunities for Louisiana high school students to demonstrate their knowledge of and appreciation for French language and culture through competitions and activities.

Dunham Cited for Expertise in Innovation and Technology The innovation and technology program at Dunham continues to garner national attention. Cited as one of the most innovative schools in the country, Dunham was selected to take part in separate research studies conducted by two national organizations.

In October, a team from the research-based consulting company Gallup, Inc., visited Dunham to collect information as part of a national study on best practices in school innovation. While on campus, the team visited classrooms and spoke with teachers and students, witnessing firsthand how innovation takes place in spaces varying from prekindergarten classrooms to the STEM labs, and even around the Harkness table.

From the data gathered during their visit to Dunham and nine other schools across the country, Gallup will develop a nationwide survey focused on the implementation of innovation in K–12 classrooms. Quantitative data collected from the survey will be included in a report outlining best practices in innovation and education.

Dunham has also been chosen as one of only twelve schools

in the nation to participate in a yearlong research study in partnership with Apple, Inc. In the fall, Head of School Steve Eagleton, Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard, and teacher Kris Harrell traveled to Apple headquarters in Cupertino, Ca., where they presented information about Dunham’s technology program and networked with industry experts. As a follow-up to the Cupertino visit, technology education researchers Dr. Ruben Puentedura and Dr. Mark Benno came to the Dunham campus to discuss research, best practices, and the impact of research on student learning.

“This research project is a fantastic opportunity to continue our partnership with Apple and engage in action research with two of the top researchers in the world,” says Steve Eagleton, who was recently appointed to the Apple Distinguished School Board. “The fact that Apple views Dunham as a leading school in education technology is both humbling and a credit to the dedication of our teachers and support from our technology staff.”

Nikole Blanchard Elected to ISTE Board Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard has been elected to the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) board of directors. The ISTE board provides strategic leadership, vision, and fiduciary oversight as it works to ensure progress toward educational goals.

“It is an honor to represent educators around the world as an ISTE board member,” says Nikole, who began her three-year term at the beginning of January. “I look forward to sharing my passion for technology and experiences at The Dunham School with educators globally.”

Nikole, who was also selected as one of the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report’s 2018 Top Forty Under 40, is a National Board Certified Teacher, Apple Distinguished Educator, Google Innovator, Apple Teacher, Swift Playground Teacher, Google Certified Trainer, PBS Learning Media Innovator and Microsoft Innovating Educator. In addition, she is the founder of a local technology network and serves as a board member of Baton Rouge’s EdCamp and Louisiana IT Symposium.

Dunham Sweeps 2018 Family Favorites Awards

When Baton Rouge voted for their 2018 family favorites in Baton Rouge Parents Magazine last fall, Dunham division heads Deedra LaPlace, Mary Theriot, and Amanda McIlwain each took first place as the community’s favorite private elementary, middle, and high principals. Dunham also earned first place as top private middle and high school and second place in the

private elementary and preschool categories.

“We are blessed to have highly qualified principals who have amassed years of experience in independent Christian education and who are committed to excellence in their leadership of our faculty, the education of our students and their partnership with parents,” says Head of School Steve Eagleton.

Alumna Elizabeth Butts Singletary ’04 Joins Dunham Counseling Staff

It’s been 14 years since Elizabeth Butts Singletary ’04 graduated from Dunham and headed to LSU. After earning a master’s of education in school counseling and working as a counselor for seven years at another school in town, Elizabeth returned to campus this fall to serve as lower school counselor, joining Ann Gorman in the counseling department.

Although Elizabeth has only been back on campus for a short time, Lower School Head Deedra LaPlace can already feel the impact of her presence on students’ daily lives. “Elizabeth has been such a blessing to our Lower School by providing additional support for the social and emotional wellbeing of our students. Her proactive approach has given them strategies to regulate their behavior and cope with life situations in positive, healthy ways that reflect biblical principles. It’s yet another way that we are striving to educate students’ minds and hearts for Christ.”

As the lower school counselor, much of Elizabeth’s focus has been on establishing strong relationships with students. “I am big on relationships,” she says. “Whether we’re dealing with academic or social issues, every child is different. The main thing is to be approachable and available to kids.”

Elizabeth, who relishes the daily hugs and pictures that have been drawn especially for her, says her favorite thing is eating lunch with students. “I get to learn new things about them in a more relaxed setting. It is so much fun to connect with them during a meal.”

In addition to serving as a resource for students, faculty, and parents, Elizabeth teaches weekly lessons on a variety of topics, including making and getting along with friends, managing emotions, solving problems, and accepting others. In a recent lesson on conflict resolution called “A Bug and A Wish,” third-graders learned how to express their feelings and communicate with classmates by saying, “It bugs me when you ____________, and I wish you would ___________.”

“We’ve done a lot of work about friendship, talking about the way we treat others and thinking about what our words and actions are reflecting to those around us,” Elizabeth explains. “The goal is to reflect Christ in all we say and do.

Being kind and loving, showing respect to others, and living our lives in service to Christ provide the foundation for our lessons.”

“Elizabeth’s enthusiasm, combined with her interactive games, activities, and love for our students, has broken down the negative connotation of counseling, and the skills she is teaching will benefit students for life,” says third grade teacher Tiffinie Burychka. “She encourages students and faculty while pointing us to Jesus, the best counselor of all. We love her and are so grateful she has joined our community.”

And Elizabeth is delighted to be back.

“It’s wonderful and a bit surreal to be back. Dunham helped mold me into who I am today. I love that many of my teachers still work here. The Dunham faculty showed me what it looks like to have strong, supportive relationships with students, and I am taking the lessons I learned from them and modeling that to my students,” she says, adding, “Although Dunham may look new and different on the outside, the heart has remained the same. The mission, the family atmosphere, and the feeling you get when you walk around campus are the same as when I was a student 15 years ago. I am glad to continue to be a part of it.”

Remembering the Legacy of Shirley Papillion The Dunham community mourned the loss of former teacher Shirley Papillion who passed away on September 7, 2018, following a courageous battle with cancer. Already a seasoned classroom veteran when she joined the Dunham faculty in 2007, Mrs. Papillion taught first and second grade for eight years and received the 2013 Liz Peters Master Teacher Award before she retired in 2015. Dedicated to teaching, Mrs. Papillion loved identifying ways to help individual students achieve academic success.

Colleagues viewed her as a consummate team player and an

eager collaborator who always exhibited a positive attitude, flexibility, and a sincere desire to use her gifts and talents for the benefit of her students and to further the mission of The Dunham School. On February 11, 2019, the Dunham community gathered to remember Mrs. Papillion at a special celebration of life ceremony in the Brown-Holt Chapel Arts Center, followed by the dedication of the first-grade classroom named in her memory by her husband, Darrel, and her children, Jude and Anna.

Kris Harrell Named Apple Distinguished Educator

The Dunham School is pleased to announce that Upper School teacher Kris Harrell has been selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) by Apple, Inc. This distinction recognizes educators who are transforming teaching and learning in their schools through their innovative use of technology in the classroom.

Harrell joins 550 new members, spanning 40 countries, in the ADE Class of 2019 and is one of only four ADEs in Louisiana. He follows Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard as the second Dunham faculty member to earn this national recognition.

Harrell began teaching at Dunham in 2007 and has taught both Middle and Upper School students in social studies, science and physical education. For the past eight years, he has taught world civilizations to ninth-grade students. A graduate of LSU, Harrell has been a designated Apple Teacher since 2016.

“The Apple Distinguished Educator community is made of innovative educators from around the world. Kris is a pioneer and forward-thinking when it comes to transforming curriculum with technology.

This recognition by Apple speaks to the level of excellence Kris brings to the classroom,” says Blanchard.

“The ADE recognition speaks to my growth mindset,” says Harrell, who is always looking for new tools to use in the classroom or innovative ways to use existing technologies. “I am not afraid to try something new in the classroom because, no matter the outcome, I will learn something from it to help me grow as an educator.”

Harrell’s favorite interactive classroom tools are Nearpod and iMovie. “Technology in the classroom allows me to empower my

students by giving them a variety of outlets to showcase their learning. Every student learns differently, so I don’t think we should require students to demonstrate what they’ve learned in the same way all the time,” Harrell says.

“Combining tech tools with the Harkness method has made a positive impact in class. Students love talking about what they created and explaining the rationale behind diagrams, fake tweets, Instagram posts, emoji translations, movie trailers and other tools.

These serve as great conversation stimulators and segues into primary source analysis,” he adds.

Apple’s ADE distinction offers Harrell national recognition as an education innovator and pioneer, who is using technology in the classroom to transform teaching and learning.

He will join other ADEs from around the world for an intense week of training in Bethesda, Maryland this summer.

“To be named as an ADE is not only a professional honor for Kris, it is an honor for Dunham. Membership in the ADE community will open wonderful doors of opportunity for him, our teachers and students,” Blanchard adds.

Apple created the ADE program in 1994 to recognize K–12 and higher educators who are using Apple technology in transformative ways. Celebrating 25 years, the program has grown into a worldwide community of more than 2,800 innovative leaders in education, helping other teachers rethink what is possible with classroom technology.

Valerie Jaques Named 2019 Liz Peters Master Teacher During commencement exercises on May 19, fourthgrade teacher Valerie Jaques was named Dunham’s 2019 Liz Peters Master Teacher. This annual award, named for the late Liz Peters, who was the school’s first employee and a master teacher in her own right, recognizes a member of the faculty who demonstrates excellence in the classroom.

Mrs. Jaques has faithfully served the school for 14 years, beginning as a third grade teacher before joining the fourth grade team. While she is masterful at teaching all subjects, her true passion is math and science. Kyle Bove Named Director of Alumni Relations The Dunham School is pleased to announce the appointment of Kyle Bove as director of alumni relations. Kyle began his new position on May 1, 2019.

In this role, Kyle manages alumni programming and outreach efforts to build relationships with alumni and creates meaningful avenues for them to participate in the life of the school. He works closely with Alumni Liaison Allyson Jones Hingle ’92 and the Alumni Council to expand alumni events and activities. As a member of Dunham’s institutional advancement team, Kyle works with Head of School Steve Eagleton, Director of Advancement Kinch Cato, and Director of Annual Giving And Constituent Relations Kelly DeRossette to develop new strategic fundraising initiatives.

Kyle most recently served as vice president of resource development and marketing for the Capital Area United Way, where he also fulfilled roles as director of major gifts and planned giving, director of leadership giving, and campaign manager.

“We are thrilled to have Kyle join our advancement team and direct our alumni program,” says Cato. “His development experience with the United Way will be hugely beneficial as we develop our alumni program.

I know our Dunham alumni will welcome him and support our continued efforts to strengthen our alumni ties with the school.”

Kyle holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University. He is a member of the Baton Rouge chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and previously served as the president of the Manship School of Mass Communication College Council. His wife, Gerri Bove, teaches English in the Middle School at Dunham. The Boves have one son, Mikey, and welcomed a new baby girl, Annie, this spring.

“My family has been blessed to be a part of the Dunham community for the past six years,” says Bove. “I’m looking forward to my new role and becoming more involved in advancing Dunham’s mission and expanding opportunities for our alumni to engage with the school.”

VISITING ARTIST SERIES The fine arts department’s Visiting Artist Series kicked off with a September master class taught by professional dancer, choreographer, orthopedic physical therapist, and movement specialist Irene Rampino who guided dance students in active stretching techniques and challenged them to think about the roles breathing and nutrition play in both sports and dance. Other visiting artists this fall and winter included the LSU Symphony Orchestra and Deaundré Woods, currently on tour with Hamilton.

Sponsored by Dunham’s Partners in the Arts, these inspiring classes and performances inspire students and provide insights into pursuing careers in the arts.

Ciara Venable Named Semifinalist for Dufour Scholarship

Junior Ciara Venable has been selected as a semifinalist for the Paul A. Dufour & Julia Dufour Richardson Scholarship, awarded by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, which provides assistance for exceptional high school students to attend private classes with recognized professional artists in the Greater Baton Rouge area. She is one of eight young artists selected as 2019 semifinalists.

Based on their submissions to the Baton Rouge Gallery’s Real-Life Experience Juried High School Exhibition, a select group of area high school artists who show exceptional promise in the visual arts are invited to apply for the scholarship. The scholarship recipient will receive six to ten hours of individual instruction and mentorship from a Baton Rouge Gallery member artist or recognized visual artist in the community.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Dunham boys tennis team and coaches Chad Myers ’97 and Ronnie Walters for claiming a second straight Division IV championship title at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Tennis Tournament on April 24.

The doubles team of Hayden Dudley ’19 and Kyle Pastor ’19 advanced to the state tournament finals again this year, finishing as doubles runners-up and helping Dunham finish with 11.5 points. The other Tiger doubles team of Michael Dudley ’22 and

Oren Gleason ’20 advanced to the semifinals.

Tiger singles player Evan Gleason ’22 made it to the quarterfinals while Jon Melara ’21 and the doubles team of David Crump ’20 and Lethan Nguyen ’21 all won their opening matches.

“To go back-to-back is so great for these guys,” Coach Chad Myers said. “And it truly is a team title. We had three doubles teams and two singles competitors who scored five points in the first round. Everybody contributed. This really is a team title.”

BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM ADVANCES TO STATE FINALS The boys basketball team advanced to the state tournament for the third consecutive year, this time in the hopes of defending their 2018 state title. Although the Tigers fell short in the final game against Metairie Park Country Day, the 2018–2019 season saw the team claim another district championship, a December championship win at the NXT LVL Hoops Fest tournament in Nashville, Tenn., and a runner-up finish in the All-State Sugar Bowl Classic in January.

Coach Jonathan Pixley earned District Coach of the Year honors, and Jordan Wright ’19 and Ty Spurlock ’19 were named All-District MVP and Defensive MVP respectively and were named to the All-District 1st Team, along with Ralph Davenport ’19, Carlos Stewart ’21, Salle Wilson ’20, and DeSean Woods ’21.

Grant Rabel Claims Third State Wrestling Title

A Dunham wrestler since the seventh grade, Grant Rabel ’19 approached his final high school season determined to reach one last goal—another win at the state tournament. In February, he pinned his opponent in the final match to claim his third LHSAA Division III State Wrestling Championship title.

“It was a great feeling. After a lot of setbacks to get there, I was ready and eager to go into the tournament and get my third title,” Grant says.

He won his first state title in 2015 as an eighth-grader, followed by the Middle School National Championship at the NHSCA High School Wrestling Championship. As a freshman, he finished as the 2016 state runner-up.

After missing his sophomore season with an injury, Grant made quite a comeback the next year. He finished the 2018 season 15-2, claimed his first City Meet title, and won his second Division III individual state title, prompting The Advocate to named him as the Outstanding Division III Wrestler on the All Metro Wrestling Team.

During his senior season, Grant won both the prestigious Ken Cole Invitational, where state wrestlers compete across divisions in their weight class, and The 50th Greater Baton Rouge Wrestling Tournament, the final tune-up for the Allstate Sugar Bowl/

Grant credits former wrestlers Kirk Wilson ’15, now Dunham’s wrestling coach, and brother Mason Rabel ’17 for keeping him on track. “Kirk has helped me work on the areas that I needed to correct and to focus on what I needed to do in my matches to get better and to stand out,” he says.

“Having my brother on the sidelines with Kirk is honestly nothing new. During my entire wrestling career, we were always at each other’s mats, watching each other wrestle, mostly because we wanted to beat each other more than we wanted to beat anyone else,” Grant continues. “But having both Kirk and Mason as my coaches, always being around, helping me get ready, pushing me to get better, has been great.”

It’s Official! Derek Stingley Signs with LSU On December 19, Derek Stingley, Jr. ’19 signed a national letter of intent to play football for the LSU Tigers, honoring the verbal commitment he made to Coach Ed Orgeron last spring. Rated as the nation’s No. 1 cornerback prospect by two recruiting services and the nation’s top overall prospect for 2019 by Rivals.com, the 195-pound defensive back and wide receiver caught 24 passes for 678 yards and eight touchdowns during his senior season, helping the Dunham Tigers claim another district championship and advance to the state quarterfinals.

Described by the press as a “once-in-a-lifetime player,” Derek was named Mr. Football, the highest honor awarded by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA), as well as the Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year and a finalist for the National Gatorade Player of the Year award. Other awards included an invitation to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game in January, the LSWA’s Outstanding Defensive Player in Class 2A, The Advocate All-Metro Offensive and Defensive MVP, The Advocate Football Star of Stars, and The Advocate Athlete of the Year Finalist.

Ralph Davenport Signs With Fisk University Tiger basketball guard Ralph Davenport ’19 signed with Fisk University on May 6, during a brief ceremony before family, friends, and classmates in Dunham’s competition gym. During his two years on the Dunham basketball team, Davenport helped the Tigers win two 8-2A district championships and received 1st Team All-District honors both years. He played in two state championship finals with the Tigers, winning a Division III championship with his teammates in 2018. As a senior, Davenport led the Tigers in 3-pointers made, 3-point shot percentage and free throw percentage, all while maintaining a 3.83 grade point average.

Austin Hinton-Richard signs with Southern University In November, senior Austin Hinton-Richard ’19 signed a national letter of intent to play college baseball at Southern University. A member of the varsity baseball team since his freshman year, Austin helped the team claim the 2018 LHSAA Division III District Championship and advance to the semifinals at the state tournament. In addition, he is a three-time All-District First Team selection and competed in the senior allstar game this spring.

Laila Hampton to Play for Lane College Laila Hampton ’19 has accepted a full scholarship to play college basketball for Lane College in Jackson, Tn. Laila, who also considered a significant offer from Millsaps College, is a three-time All-District player who led her team to two straight quarterfinal appearances and their first district title in 20 years. She averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game in her senior season and received the team MVP award from Coach Chad Myers ’97 at Dunham’s winter sports convocation.

In April, Jordan Wright ’19 signed to play basketball at the collegiate level for Vanderbilt University. An honor student as well as a gifted athlete, Jordan led Dunham to a 2018 LHSAA Division III state title and two runners-up finishes in his final three high school seasons. In addition to being a three-time All-State, All-District All-Metro selection and a two-time All-District MVP, Jordan was nominated for the opportunity to play in the 2019 McDonald’s All American Game and was chosen to tour Germany in the spring of 2018 as part of a USA Select team.

After fielding interest from a number of college basketball programs across the country, Jordan announced in late April that he had narrowed his options down to Tulane University and Vanderbilt, noting that his final decision would be based on which school he believed would help him develop the most as a person and as a player.

EVAN LIGHT RECEIVES INAUGURAL COURAGE AWARD As the recipient of The Advocate’s first-ever Courage Award, senior Evan Light became one of the newspaper’s 2019 Star of Stars. New to Dunham this year, Evan, who wears prosthesis on both legs, served as the kicker on the varsity football team and was a member of the varsity wrestling team. Although his time at Dunham may have been short, Evan quickly became a beloved and well-respected member of the school and inspired his teammates, coaches, and fans through his character and determination.

Lower School Playground Capital Project Goal: $575,000 Committed: $250,000

he Dunham School is pleased to announce that a lead gift commitment has been made for proposed upgrades to the Lower School playground and sports area, with a target date of the summer of 2020.

Although still in the design phase, the project, estimated at approximately $850,000, will include recreation and sports areas suitable for the Lower School’s growing physical education program.

SCIENCE CENTER PHASE II Fundraising is underway for Phase II of the science center project, which will include the redesign and upgrade of the remaining five classrooms in the Carpenter-Randall Science Center. The goal is to complete project fundraising next year and begin work on the labs in the summer of 2020.

KAREN FERNBAUGH ROY ’86

A Voice for the Disabled

SINCE KAREN FERNBAUGH ROY ’86 was crowned Ms. Wheelchair America last July, she has crisscrossed the country, appearing at abilities expos, children’s hospitals, schools, parades, and other community events, sharing her message of advocacy for those with disabilities.

“By far, the children I meet at the abilities expos around the country have been my favorite part of the experience,” says Karen, who has become a role model for young people with disabilities. “I have always loved children, and now that mine are in college, I really appreciate the joy that children exude.”

Karen was shot in the back during an armed car robbery in 1987, suffering a paralyzing spinal cord injury. She was only 19.

In the 31 years that have passed since that lifechanging moment, Karen has never let her disability keep her from achieving her goals. She has earned two degrees, learned how to drive a car using hand controls, gotten married, had three children, and pursued a career as a social worker.

Her active lifestyle is possible in part to the technological devices that keep her healthy. As Ms. Wheelchair America, Karen continues to advocate for others with disabilities, increasing awareness of and access to adaptive equipment and devices that can help them stay active.

The Ms. Wheelchair America title has given her a broader platform for her message, one she has been sharing her entire adult life. “People with disabilities have the right to equipment that can keep them healthy. I have fought the medical community and insurance companies for 31 years to have the technology I need to stay healthy,” she explains.

Most people with mobility impairments end up with wounds, fractures, and contractures within months.

“Because I was fortunate enough to find the standing and electrical stimulation devices I need and deserve, I have never had any complications from my spinal cord 46

injury. There are stacks of data that show how that much sitting is unhealthy for able-bodied people; it is even worse for those who cannot stand,” she says.

The ongoing tug-of-war between insurance companies and the medical community over providing adaptive technologies to those who need them to stay healthy is the message Karen continues to share as she travels the country.

The enormous amount of travel is both the best and the most difficult aspect of being Ms. Wheelchair America. “I have been so many beautiful places— Hawaii, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Boston, South Dakota—and have visited 18 states and 25 cities. I have tried adaptive skiing and sled hockey, which were both a blast,” says Karen. The downside is that she often travels on the weekends while managing a family and working full-time for Numotion. “I definitely will be ready for some rest and relaxation after I pass the crown to the next advocate.”

Karen’s reign as Ms. Wheelchair America has led to a new role at Numotion, the largest vendor in the world for custom wheelchairs and other technologies for people with disabilities. “I am now their brand ambassador, which includes government relations,” she says. “I am so excited that I get to continue advocating for people with disabilities as part of my job. This promotion is a dream come true!”

Once she completes her reign, Karen also plans to write her own life story. “I have always wanted to tell my story with the hope that it can help others who face similar circumstances. It is a crazy series of events, but the ending is a happy one.”

“My biggest takeaway from the Ms. Wheelchair America experience is that great and rewarding adventures can start at age 50! I would never have imagined that I would be starting a whole new career and traveling the country advocating for people with disabilities,” she says. “Reinventing my life has been scary, but rewarding beyond my wildest dreams.”

2019 Athletics Hall of Fame John Howard ’87, Leigh Myers ’08, and Sarah McKey Waggoner ’03 were inducted into the Dunham Athletics Hall of Fame on April 4, 2019. John, Leigh, and Sarah join an elite group of alumni and coaches who have left a lasting legacy on the Dunham athletics program and demonstrate the qualities that make them champions on and off the field. Previous inductees include Sean Cangelosi ’96, Chris Barker Chaffin ’92, Reggie Griffith ’99, Todd Kinchen ’87, Cary Koch ’05, Mitch McIlwain ’94, Lauren Hayes Parks ’02, and Coach Joey Thibodeaux.

During his high school career, JOHN HOWARD was a multi-sport athlete who excelled in track and field, baseball, and football. As a two-time All-State and All-District baseball player, John helped lead his team to a state championship win.

In football, he was named All-District in both his junior and senior seasons and helped the team advance to the state semifinals. After graduation, John continued his football career as a Ragin’ Cajun at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette).

LEIGH MYERS earned All-Metro, All-District, and All-State honors in girls basketball and volleyball. During her senior year, she was named to the All-State girls basketball and volleyball teams, qualified for the state track and field meet in multiple events, was a state semifinalist in tennis, and was a finalist for the Baton Rouge Area Female Athlete of the Year.

Leigh earned a Division I volleyball scholarship to Radford University in Virginia, where she is still ranked in the top 10 for all-time assists.

SARAH MCKEY WAGGONER lettered in tennis all four years in high school and ranked in the top 10 in Louisiana in USTA competition. An LSHAA state runner-up her junior year, Sarah was undefeated in individual play her senior year, finishing as the 2003 state champion and leading the ladies team to a state championship win. Sarah earned a tennis scholarship to Samford University, where her team won the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and competed in the NCAA National Tournament in her freshman and junior years.

Sara Owens Davis continues to run her own contract engineering company, DaviSolve Consulting, LLC, offering biomedical engineering services to medical device companies. Sara specializes in medical product risk management and design control processes in accordance with current FDA regulations.

Elizabeth Butts Singletary ’04 and husband Brian welcomed daughter Ann McCutchen in 2018. She joins big brother Douglas. Elizabeth is now the lower school counselor at Dunham (see profile on page 20).

Jennie Garland graduated from LSU with a Bachelor of Science. Jennie also attended ULM, where she finished with a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She currently works as a pharmacist at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

Tiger Alumni Named to Baton Rouge Business Report’s 2018 Forty Under 40 Class

Congratulations to Tiger alumni who are making an impact in the Baton Rouge area. Hampton Grunewald ’98 and Cary Koch ’05 were named to Baton Rouge Business Report’s 2018 Forty Under 40 class, which honors “the capital region’s brightest young leaders, innovators and business professionals.”

Hampton Grunewald currently serves as the LSU Ag Center’s associate vice president for governmental relations, where he works with state and federal elected officials to develop policy and create funding opportunities benefitting Louisiana students, families and agricultural producers across the state. He also 54

volunteers with Coastal Conservation Association to promote awareness of coastal issues and works with youth through the LSU Ag Center’s 4-H youth development program.

Cary Koch works in government relations as a lobbyist for Roedel, Parsons, Koch, Blache, Balhoff and McCollister Law Firm. He works with stakeholders to shepherd bills through the legislative process until signed into law by the governor.

Cary also serves as the executive director of the Louisiana Craft Brewers Guild and is a member of the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge board of directors.

Lindsey Baxter Lopez and husband Timothy are leading The Chapel College Ministry mission trip to Prague this summer.

Alys Murray received her master’s degree from King’s College (London) in January.

Her debut novel, The Christmas Company, has been adapted into a movie, which will appear as part of The Hallmark Channel’s 2019 Christmas movie line-up.

2014

Stephen Gravois graduated from Southwestern Seminary in May and was accepted to Liberty University, where he will pursue a master’s in clinical mental health counseling. Stephen has accepted a full-time job offer at Logos Counseling in Irving, Texas.

Dylon Maggio ’14

Dylon Maggio graduated in 2017 from Coastal Bend College in Beeville, Texas, with an associate’s degree in business management. Dylon spent three years playing collegiate basketball for Southeastern Louisiana University and Coastal Bend College before signing with international modeling firm, Wilhelmina Models, Inc., in August of 2017. He has modeled for Steve Madden, Timberland, Calvin Klein, Apple, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and several other larger brands. Dylon now makes his home in New York, where he has been featured in international marketing campaigns for Gap, Fossil, Nike, and Aeropostale and has walked in New York Fashion Week for designer Willy Chavarria.

2015

As co-chair of LSU’s College of Engineering’s Society of Peer Mentors Robotics Mentoring team, Brett Dupree secured a $13,000 grant from Dow Chemical to help teach robotics to high school students who could one day become LSU engineers.

Ashton Maggio graduated from Louisiana State University in December with a Bachelor of Science in business management with a minor in social work and will begin graduate school at LSU this fall. In the interim, she will spend four months in Tanzania with the Green Living Project, Alys Murray ’13 returned to campus in March to meet with Dunham students and share insights about pursuing a writing career. Alys’ novel, The Christmas Company, will be adapted into a TV movie on The Hallmark Channel in December.

DunhaminEurope Becket Pricer ’21 and Parker King ’21, pictured in front of Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, were part of the Dunham in Europe group that traveled to Austria, Germany, and Switzerland in June of 2018. Immersed in Alpine landscapes and rich cultural history and landmarks, the group came to understand why these countries have inspired artists for centuries.
