Dear Dunham Family, WHAT A GREAT TIME TO BE A DUNHAM TIGER! As we move ever closer to the end of another school year, God continues to bless The Dunham School and we, in return, give Him all praise, honor, and glory! In this current edition of Tiger Roar, you will find evidence of our strong Christian culture, exceptional academic achievement, fantastic artistic performance, and incredible athletic success.

I am thrilled by the accomplishments of our students, faculty, and staff, as The Dunham School’s reputation continues to grow. I do believe that it is a time for us to be bold with the good news of the Gospel and of the School. We remain committed to the pursuit of excellence in all things as a biblical admonition. The Dunham School was founded to provide a unique educational opportunity for families seeking an excellent Christian education.

I believe that God is revealing His bigger plan for our school— a plan to challenge students to live out their faith, lead others, and be positive Christian influences upon our city, our state, and our nation. Dunham students and alumni are difference makers at home and abroad, and God continues to expand the School’s success, opportunity, and influence. Our humble beginnings are being supplanted by abundant success and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for what God is doing. We have not forgotten the faith journey of the past, but we are walking in the hope of the future and it is bright, full and vibrant!

The fall semester is celebrated on the pages within, and we are already amazed at the successes we’ve experienced so far in this spring semester, including additional State Championship titles in basketball and wrestling, National Merit recognition, and inspirational fine arts performances. We will capture those great stories and celebrate the Class of 2018 in the summer edition of Tiger Roar. Please join me in celebrating and sharing the success of the School with friends, colleagues, neighbors, and future Dunham Tiger families. To be God be the glory!

Future Forward: Becoming a Leader in Innovation and Technology

In 2009, Dunham leapt boldly into its future, launching a 1-to-1 technology initiative in partnership with Apple, Inc. The announcement elicited an enthusiastic response from teachers and students eager to enter the brave new world of Macbooks, iPads, and all things Apple.

Apple’s VP for Education John Couch, who was present for the announcement, predicted that the program would introduce a “new culture of innovation and creativity” at Dunham, yet also challenged teachers, students, and administrators to guard the link between technology and values.

“Be lights in a dark world,“ Couch advised. “Whatever you

create is captured and distributed to the world. Create content that tells the truth, communicates values, and shares the gospel,” he said.

Fast forward to 2018. Couch’s predicted culture shift is evident in every corner of the Dunham campus. Laptops loaded with Apple programs and Google Suite have transformed teaching and learning by taking what was once in a book and making it alive and relevant. Teachers and students have moved from consumers to producers of information, strengthening critical thinking and collaborative skills with a focus on preparing students for success in an unknown, rapidly changing future.

CHANGING THE

MINDSET

Providing access to technology was just the beginning.

Transforming educational outcomes required different ways of thinking about education.

“Changing the mindset was a journey away from the traditional perspective of teachers as classroom experts to one of the teacher as a facilitator in a student-centered classroom,” explains Director of Innvoation and Technology Nikole Blanchard.

Noting the transformative impact of technology at Dunham, Lower School Head and Dean of Faculty Deedra LaPlace says, “Learning is now more engaging, interactive, and individualized.

Students can research topics from a myriad of resources via the internet and online databases and collaborate to create multimedia projects to share information.”

“Innovation is taking something and making it better,” says Blanchard. “Innovation helps students not to fear change, but instead be open to different ways of thinking, to embrace new ideas.”

“Through hands-on challenges in STEM labs, students imagine possibilities, explore ideas, create prototypes, and make improvements through problem-solving,” LaPlace adds.

THE POWER OF

DESIGN THINKING

With six weeks to design and build a robot that will successfully complete a specific mission in competition, Upper School robotics students sharpen more than STEM skills like engineering, math, Java programming, circuitry, and electrical wiring. They also hone the presentation, design, and communication skills

needed to successfully interact with judges, sponsors, and other school teams.

The best application of design thinking can be found in the growing Robotics program that includes kindergarten–12th grade students in afterschool programs and competition teams, where critical thinking, collaboration, effective communication, and practical applications for math and science abound.

With rapid advances in technology, focusing on STEM through robotics is more important than ever. “In today’s climate, education must be relevant, future-focused, and interconnected between disciplines,” explains STEM Director Sheri Goings. “STEM gives students the tools to explore the world around them, gaining empathy for others and learning about real problems that must be solved, not those limited to math and science application.”

THE NEW FRONTIER

In the Lower School Innovation Lab, fourth graders tackle a new challenge—design and build a chair using only newspaper and masking tape. Working in teams, they brainstorm creative ways to fulfill the challenge while meeting the required specifications. At the challenge’s end, there are four unique chairs, four different solutions ranging from good to great.

The addition of the Lower School Innovation Lab and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Lab in Middle School allows the introduction of design thinking into every subject across all grades. In these unique classroom settings, students tackle challenges that require creative problem solving and teamwork to complete.

NIKOLE BLANCHARD NAMED 2017 GOOGLE INNOVATOR

The Dunham School is proud to announce that Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard has been named a 2017 Google Innovator based on her commitment to “designing creative solutions to the world’s toughest challenges in education.” In the fall, Nikole joined 36 other educators from 19 countries at the Google for Education Innovator Academy in Stockholm, Sweden, where they were immersed in the Google design thinking process. Since her return, Blanchard has been teaching and sharing what she learned with Dunham teachers

In November, Nikole joined Apple VP John Couch on a trip to Mexico, where she had the opportunity to tour a school that focuses on challenge-based learning. In addition to being a Google Innovator and an Apple Distinguished Educator, Nikole is also a National Board Certified Teacher, Swift Playground Teacher, Google Certified Trainer, PBS Learning Media Innovator, and Microsoft Innovating Educator—and she still finds time to learn and discover new ways to use technology alongside our students!

REALITY

In a classroom discussion on Indian culture, World Civilization teacher Kris Harrell uses virtual reality goggles to take his students on a tour of a Hindu temple in India, where they explore the exterior and interior of the temple from multiple angles, noting specific features that reflect the Hindu beliefs.

In classrooms across the campus, students of all ages use virtual reality to tour places once only studied in a textbook or read about in literature class.

“The possibilities for the future integration of technology seem endless as we enter the realm of virtual and augmented reality. Students can now “walk” along the Great Wall of China, experiencing it as if they were actually there,” Deedra LaPlace says.

A RECOGNIZED LEADER IN INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY The bold technology initiative that began in 2009 became the catalyst for a paradigm shift that has created an exemplary learning environment for students and positioned Dunham as the undisputed technology leader in Baton Rouge. Today, the school boasts 16 Google Certified Teachers, with 100 percent of the faculty completing the Apple Teacher Program.

In 2011, Dunham received its first Apple Distinguished School (ADS) award, a testament to the school’s “visionary leadership, exemplary learning environments, ongoing professional development, and educational innovation.” In 2017, the school received its sixth consecutive Apple Distinguished School award.

In recognition of this remarkable achievement—believed to a first among ADS schools—John Couch returned to personally present the award.

Taking Couch’s 2009 challenge to heart, Dunham now serves as a light to others by sharing our expertise with the community.

Over the last five years, more than 1,500 educators have visited Dunham to learn about best practices in technology integration through individual visits and at Innovation Showcases that provide training and professional development for area teachers.

Innovation and creativity were on display during Lower School Innovation Night in September.

Innovation: A Family Affair Everything begins with an idea.

This concept provided the foundation for Lower School Innovation Night in September. Designed as an interactive experience for parents and students, the evening event revolved around 12 stations featuring STEMfocused activities, including robotics, coding, and even a static electricity station, that allowed families to explore, create, and collaborate together.

Throughout the night, parents had opportunities to participate in the same type of design-thinking and problem-solving activities that their children experience at school. At the end of the evening, everyone left with something he or she had created, and students who completed all of the stations earned an Innovation Night button.

“Innovation Night allowed us to demonstrate how we incorporate an engineering design process into our curriculum in fun, engaging ways,” says Director of Innovation and Technology Nikole Blanchard. “By allowing students to solve challenges by thinking them through and hands-on experimentation— without the restriction of a right or wrong answer—we encourage them to become innovators.”

Dunham Students Earn AP Scholar Awards Congratulations are in order for the members of the Classes of 2017 and 2018 who were named AP Scholars by the College Board based on their outstanding performances on Advanced Placement (AP) exams.

Last May, 55 Dunham students sat for 100 AP exams, with 86 percent earning a score of 3 or higher, making them eligible to receive college credit, upper-level placement, or both, as a result. The average score of all tests taken by Dunham students was 3.47. The national average was 2.84.

AP tests were scored off-site by a committee composed of readers representing colleges and secondary schools across the country. Once all results were tallied, Dunham received notification that 16 students had been named 2017 AP Scholars (see page 7).

“Our students’ strong performance on their AP exams reflects the quality of our teaching and the growth of our AP program,” says Upper School Director Amanda McIlwain. “These scores send a strong signal to college admissions offices that our students are well prepared for success in their undergraduate programs.”

Dunham currently offers 25 Advanced Placement courses for students who are ready to tackle the challenge of collegelevel work. Each rigorous course culminates with a comprehensive exam in the spring. Created by the College Board in 1955, the AP program is recognized far and wide as a standard of excellence in education. Dunham has had 58 students named AP Scholars since 2014.

Gabby Walker ’17 Named National AP Scholar The College Board named Gabby Walker ’17 a National AP Scholar, the highest honor possible, based on her outstanding scores on AP exams taken during her high school career.

Gabby, who was also named a 2017 National Merit Scholar, a 2016 and 2017 AP Scholar with Distinction, and 2017 Valedictorian, sat for nine AP exams while enrolled at Dunham. With an average score of 4.33, Gabby’s stellar AP performance resulted in approximately 32 hours of earned college credit at Baylor University, where she is currently enrolled.

Seniors Receive National Merit Recognition

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named Alyssa Sharbaugh ’18 a National Merit Finalist and Ana Rodriguez ’18 and Anna Claire Saffell ’18 National Merit Commended Students based on their outstanding Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT-NMSQT) scores.

Out of the approximately 1.5 million students who sit for the PSAT each fall, only 50,000 qualify as National Merit Commended Students, with only 16,000 advancing to Semifinalist.

Finalists selected out of the semifinalist pool are then eligible to

compete for National Merit Scholarships. If awarded a scholarship, a Finalist becomes a National Merit Scholar ®.

Ana Rodriguez has also been named a National Hispanic Scholar by the College Board. Students qualifying for recognition as part of the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) are in the top 2.5 percent among Hispanic and Latino students who take the PSAT. Each year, the NHRP recognizes approximately 5,000 of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the test.

Middle School Sister & Brother Duo Win National Essay Contest

Joshua and Katie Harris were both named national winners in an essay competition administered by Future Technology Summit, an organization whose mission is to spark conversations about how rapid technological advancements will fundamentally alter the way we work in the next five to 10 years.

Middle school siblings Katie and Joshua Harris were named national winners in the 2017 Future of Technology Summit Essay Competition. Sixth-grader Katie won first place in the elementary division, and eighth-grader Joshua received honorable mention in the middle school division.

The essay competition, administered by Future Technology Summit (FTS), asked students to reflect on how technology touches their lives and how rapid advancements might change the ways in which they live, learn, work, or connect with others in the future.

Winning essays were chosen based on creativity, reflection, organization, and clarity. Out of 3,000 submissions from students in 800 schools across the United States and Israel, FTS selected one first place winner from each division—elementary (K–6), middle (7–8), and high school (9–12)—in the United States, as well as a middle and high school winner in Israel. Up to four honorable mentions were also awarded in each division.

Katie’s first place prize included a recent trip to Washington, DC, where she attended the Future of Technology Summit and had the opportunity to interact with a number of well known future technology experts, including Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Wozniak and Tesla Motors co-founder and former CEO Mark Eberhard.

Dunham STEM Director Sheri Goings says, “Competitions such as these are invaluable experiences for our students. When students realize that they have a voice in what their future holds, they become the game-changers. I am thankful to our amazing teachers at Dunham, who foster creativity, critical thinking, and excellence in their classrooms. Both of our winners are students in Mary Ellen Courville’s writing classes.”

Mathletes Win Big in Fall Competitions

Dunham Mathletes and team sponsor Sheri Goings celebrate their 1st Place Sweepstakes Award at the Episcopal Math Competition.

Dunham Mathletes made every answer count in key competitions last fall. In October, Middle School Mathletes won top awards in every category at the Junior High Math Tournament at Comeaux High School in Lafayette, where they matched wits against 175 students from nine area schools. With strong individual and team performances in every category, the Dunham team claimed first place in the 6th grade math bowl team test, first in the all-school test, and second in the Algebra I team test. In addition, each student claimed an individual award in their respective events (see sidebar).

In November, Middle and Upper School Mathletes piled up the points again to win the 1st Place Sweepstakes Award at the Episcopal Math Tournament. Competing against students from 24 schools, the math scholars’ outstanding performances in individual and overall team competitions resulted in the most cumulative points in Division 2.

“Our math team is fierce and competitive! They are two for two with major awards at math competitions this year,” says Sheri Goings, Director of STEM and Mathletes team sponsor. “I am excited, not only for their achievements at the tournament, but also for what they bring back to the classroom. Success in these competitions leads to confidence in the classroom, willingness to take risks, and creativity to solve authentic problems.”

Middle School Scholars Qualify for Duke TIP

2017–2018 National Junior Honor Society Officers

Congratulations to the following Middle School students who qualifed for Duke University’s Talent Identification Program (TIP) that identifies gifted middle school students from across the country. To qualify, students must score at or above the 95th percentile on an accepted grade-level standardized test. Once enrolled in the Duke TIP program, students have access to enrichment activities and optional above-level testing on the PSAT, ACT, or SAT, and are eligible to apply to TIP’s residential educational programs, where they become part of community of gifted peers who celebrate learning.

The Dunham Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) elected new officers in the fall. The NJHS chapter at Dunham currently has 27 members from 7th and 8th grade. Dunham Athletics raised just under $2,000 for Dreams Come True of Louisiana at the annual Dunham Dodgeball Tournament in August. Twelve teams battled fierce competition in the 2017 double elimination tournament, with the team representing Dunham Basketball taking the championship crown. During the annual trip to Washington, DC, seventh-graders Elizabeth McDonald, Eliza Riley, Grace Robvais, and Elliot Spencer represented their classmates and the school as they placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetary, paying homage to those who gave their lives for our freedom.

In the two weeks before Thanksgiving Break, the Middle School National Junior Honor Society and the Upper School National Honor Society sponsored their annual food drive to benefit The Shepherd’s Pantry, a local food bank.

WEARING PINK FOR A CAUSE In October, students wore pink to cheer on the Lady Tigers’ in their annual “pink” volleyball game.

Christi completed her master’s degree in May and was recognized at commencement as the top student in the university’s graduate program in education.

Safety Officers on Campus At the start of the school year, Dunham entered into a partnership with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office to place a deputy officer on campus each day from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Since that time, Officers Daniel Barrick, James Dawson, and Jimmy Douglas have quickly become favorites among students and teachers alike.

As a visiting accreditation team recently noted in their report, “The school’s resource officers see themselves as more than simply security officers; they view themselves as fully invested members who are here to make a difference in kids’ lives.”

The addition of security officers is part of Dunham’s ongoing effort to remain one of the safest schools in the country. Additional safety measures include the development of thorough crisis management plan, regular review of internal safety protocols, restricted access to facilities, campus-wide camera and alert systems, and ongoing faculty and staff training through Safe Havens International, one of the countries leading campus safety organizations.

FALL SPORTS REAP A HARVEST

The Dunham athletic department experienced a fall season to remember, including district and state championship honors, as well as individual awards and recognition. Galatians 6:9 encourages us “to not grow weary in doing good for in due time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up.” Our fall athletes and coaches worked diligently in and out of season preparing for competition, and they certainly reaped the benefits.

THE TIGERS FOOTBALL TEAM captured the District Championship, claiming the program’s first title since the 1993 season. This team was led by a tremendous group of seniors who demonstrated consistency on a daily basis. The 2017 season was highlighted by a thrilling fourth quarter comeback victory over Port Allen High School and a dominating win over longtime rival Episcopal on senior night. Standout players senior Mike Williams ’18 (quarterback) and Derek Stingley ’19 (defensive back/wide receiver) were voted as District MVPs, and Coach Neil Weiner was selected as the District Coach of the Year.

THE SWIM TEAM is still growing in numbers. However, where we lack in quantity, we excel in quality. Ana Rodriguez ’18 qualified for the state meet and was the recipient of our prestigious Tiger Tradition Award. Miles Jantzi ’18 closed out his senior year by completing one of the most decorated careers in Dunham Athletics history. Miles finished as the State Champion in the 50m and 100m sprint races and was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the championship meet.

Miles has won seven individual state titles in his career at Dunham.

CROSS COUNTRY Newly hired Cross Country Coach Kate Cramer immediately energized our growing cross country program. Every member of the team, including a robust group of middle school students, saw tremendous improvement. With a small group of senior runners, the future looks bright for the Tigers.

The season was highlighted by the performance of eighth-grader John Walker McDonald, who was named the varsity team MVP. McDonald finished sixth at the LHSAA State Championship Meet and is the number one rated eighth-grader in the state and is also ranked nationally.

As they do every year, the LADY TIGERS VOLLEYBALL TEAM played some of the toughest competitors from around the state. No matter the opponent, the team rose to the occasion and quickly established themselves as the best team in the area by winning the District Championship. Sophomore player Janai Stevens was selected as the District MVP, and Coach Donna Pixley was named District Coach of the Year. In addition, the team received the 2017 LHSAA Division V Sportsmanship Award from the Capital City Board of Volleyball Officials.

MIKE WILLIAMS SIGNS WITH TEXAS With the stroke of a pen, Mike Williams ’18 opened the door to his future by signing his national letter of intent to play college football at the University of Texas. After months of speculation and visits from LSU, Alabama, and nearly every other SEC school, as well as Notre Dame, Stanford, Florida State, and Oklahoma, the Big Cat officially announced he was trading in his Tiger stripes to become a Longhorn at his signing ceremony on

February 7. Mike, who passed for 1,565 yards and 17 touchdowns and also rushed for 849 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior, was named All-District MVP earlier this year. In addition, he was named one of eight finalists for the 2017 Warrick Dunn/WAFB Sportsline Player of the Year Award, named WBRZ Fans Choice winner in November, and selected to play in the US Army Red Stick Bowl in December.

JOHN WALKER MCDONALD ’22: THE MIND OF A CHAMPION

During the fall, eighth-grader John Walker McDonald ran for both the middle school and varsity cross country teams, topping off a successful season by winning his first individual state championship with a 10:41 personal best in the 7th/8th grade two-mile race at the a Middle School Cross Country State Meet. He followed that achievement with a sixth-place finish in the LHSAA All State Sugar Bowl 2A State Cross Country Championship, the only middle school student to place in the top ten.

“John Walker is the type of kid you want to coach. He is driven, motivated, and passionate about running. He has the heart of a race horse, the mind of a champion, and an inner drive that you can’t teach,” says Coach Kate Cramer. “He is an example to our team of how to race fearlessly and ferociously. John Walker fuels my fire to be an even better coach.”

unham parent Blake Whittle and golf partner Drew Alleman captured the coveted Dunham Cup as winners of the annual Dunham Cup Golf Classic. The 2017 tournament, hosted by the Dunham Alumni Association on September 28 at the Santa Maria Golf Course, raised more than $7,500 for the Alumni Association.

The winning duo battled 31 two-man teams to claim the trophy with a score of 16 under par. Whittle and Alleman’s names will be etched onto the new Dunham Cup, generously provided by Jostens of Baton Rouge.

“The Dunham Cup is a great event for the school. It gives us the opportunity to connect Dunham alumni with the school’s current parents and grandparents. Carnival2017 Despite predictions of thunderstorms, Carnival 2017 went on as planned on Saturday, October 21, at the Dunham Stadium. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Carnival committee, led by co-chairs Vikki Dudley and Tracy Shean Jantzi ’90, this year’s event was a great success, raising nearly $20,000 for Dunham arts and athletic programs. PillarsofPurpose LEADERSHIP GIFT SUPPORTS CARPENTER-RANDALL SCIENCE CENTER

he Dunham School is pleased to announce that Laurie Randall Duchmann and her mother, Erica Carpenter, have made a leadership level gift of $350,000 that will benefit both the Pillars of Purpose Capital Campaign and capital improvements to the Science Center. The facility will be named the Carpenter-Randall Science Center in honor of this generous gift.

The gift helps fund previous construction of the Science Center, as well as new improvements that will begin this summer and will include state-of-the art lab spaces and science equipment. The fundraising efforts for the improvements to the Science Center began earlier this year with a lead gift from Brian and Courtney Murphy, who are naming the Chemistry Lab in addition to continued support for the Pillars Campaign.

Laurie makes this gift in memory of her late father, David Carpenter, who passed away in 2016, and in honor of her children, Ally ’19 and Jackson ’22. Laurie made an additional gift in September for upgrades to the Trey and Will Clark Baseball Facility and also increased her Annual Giving Campaign gift to $2,500.

“After I made the gift for baseball, I visited with Kinch Cato about other needs of the school. Then Larry and I attended a Head of School dinner with fellow Dunham parents, and we were

inspired as Steve Eagleton talked about his vision for Dunham.

I met with Steve and Kinch a few days after the dinner, and shared that I was eager to support the Pillars Campaign and the new improvements the school needed to make in the Science Center,” says Laurie.

“Science was my favorite subject in both high school and college. I loved the variety of lab activities and hands-on experiments I was offered and wanted my children and all Dunham students to enjoy a similar learning environment. I’m honored to give back to Dunham in such a meaningful way, and I feel strongly that my dad is guiding me as I make these important decisions. The superior education and enriching atmosphere have been such a blessing to my children. I am proud of the exceptional young adults they have become.”

Laurie plans to continue supporting the Pillars of Purpose Capital Campaign and other fundraising efforts at Dunham and hopes that this gift from her and her mother will inspire other families to join them in support. “This gift will help with the Pillars campaign goal and some of the upgrades in science, but there is more we can do, and I hope others will join the school in reaching those goals.”

ARTIFICIAL TURF ADDED TO INDOOR BATTING PAVILION Artificial turf has been added to the Trey and Will Clark Baseball Facility thanks to a $20,000 gift last fall from Laurie Randall Duchmann. “I made this gift with my father in mind, as watching college baseball was a pastime that we shared together. I have many happy memories of the two of us attending LSU baseball games,” Laurie shares.

We are proud to announce that The Dunham School recently received dual reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Independent Schools and AdvancED (formerly the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools).

SAIS/AdvancED accredited schools are part of a select network of schools that have demonstrated excellence in educating students. In order to earn and maintain accreditation, schools must meet quality standards, undergo a comprehensive evaluation by an outside group of peer professionals, and implement a school plan focused on strategic improvement and student performance.

The reaccreditation process, led by Lower School Head and Dean of Faculty Deedra LaPlace, began in the spring of 2016 with a self-study that included a review of the 2012 strategic plan, as well as the school’s mission, core beliefs, and student performance data; SWOT analyses conducted by key stakeholders; and SAIS surveys of parents, students, faculty, trustees, alumni, and parents of alumni. Information gleaned from the self-study was then used to craft a new five-year strategic plan.

In November, after conducting an on-site visit to review the school’s self-study and standards of compliance, an SAIS accreditation team made up of administrators from peer schools unanimously recommended that Dunham be awarded reaccreditation. In the final report submitted to SAIS/AdvancED, the visiting team, chaired

by Dr. Randy Watts, head of school at Brookwood School in Thomasville, Ga., wrote, “The school has made tremendous strides in visioning and executing a progressive approach to teaching and learning while holding firm to the deep desire to educate the hearts of each student.”

Dunham was first accredited by SAIS in 1989 and received dual accreditation by SAIS and AdvancED in 2007. The school has maintained dual accreditation by both associations since that time.

2017 STRATEGIC PLAN As part of the reaccreditation process, a steering committee composed of faculty, staff, board members, parents, and alumni met in November of 2016 to set goals for the school’s updated strategic plan. In January of 2017, the faculty and Board of Trustees enthusiastically approved the following goals:

Actress Jency Griffin Hogan ’97 loves taking people through a story, through the eyes of a character.

At 16, Jency traveled around, doing a one-woman show for large audiences.

At 22, with her freshly-minted theatre degree from Louisiana Tech, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting dream.

Once in LA, Jency won small parts in short films, took acting classes, and waited tables. While she learned a lot about herself, Jency also became disillusioned with the type of roles she was being offered—gang members, drug addicts, androgynous characters.

“I am a big, Italian woman, not your typical ingenue,” says Jency, who is drawn to period pieces with strong, independent women. “I wanted to wear big skirts and ride horses. I was looking for Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman-type roles.”

So, after eight years, Jency returned home to tell her own stories and make her own movies. “Indie films are all about your local network and asking favors. Can I use your barn? Borrow your horses? I found funding here because of my local network,” Jency explains.

Since then, Jency has worn many hats—actress, producer, writer, director—on film projects big and small.

She has landed some small roles in big movies, including Inside Out and Dallas Buyers Club, but especially loves directing. “I love working with actors, calling the shots. I learn by being the director and also by watching other actors and directors work,” she says.

As a Christian filmmaker, Jency holds to certain standards. “I ask God, ‘What do you think of this project? Should I do this role, this film or not?’ He says, ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ Some decisions are hard to make,” she admits.

Jency and her husband, photographer Aaron Hogan, have

partnered with others to produce several award-winning short films including Madeline’s Oil, The Verses, With My Soul, and Last Light. An early collaboration, Painted Parakeets, received recognition at the Best Shorts Competition and the IndieFest Film Awards. Their latest short film, Seed of the Free, about Sojourner Truth, has been submitted for the Louisiana Film Prize at the Louisiana Film Festival later this year, and Blaze, directed by Ethan Hawke, was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Upcoming projects include Devil’s Hitching Post, an 1890s revenge story that Jency co-directed with Jonah Monet, scheduled for release in March 2018. Jency also has two period dramas in the works, one a feature film and the other for TV. “I am a popcorn machine of ideas. I can’t turn it off,” she says. To celebrate her 40th birthday, Jency is writing the script for her dream project, a modern day romantic comedy about how she met and married the love of her life. “It’s filled with romance, fantasy, and a touch of quirkiness, just like us,” she says, smiling.

After serving at the YMCA Manship Branch, Sunrise Senior Living, and Alzheimer’s Services of The Capital Area, Tina was recruited to be a director at The Pearl of Jameston in Baton Rouge and was recently promoted to a regional role, serving 11 Phoenix Senior Living properties in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and South Carolina.

owns Teddy Tennis in Baton Rouge, teaching 2-to 6-year olds the basics of tennis using pictures, music, and teddy bear stories. She currently has 25 classes a week, including one with Dunham’s Aftercare program.

Luke Simpson graduated from LSU with a degree in business in May 2017. He works for Arthur J. Gallegher & Co., a Fortune 500 company.

2013

Brea Manuel will graduate from LSU in May with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and plans to enter a PhD program in organic or medicinal chemistry. She has received offers from Emory University and Portland State University (both fully funded), an interview offer from University of Houston College of Pharmacy, and is awaiting answers from University of Texas, Vanderbilt, and University of the Pacific. Brea also plans to do post-doctoral work in hopes of owning her own lab down the road.

After graduating early with a business degree, LSU football walk-on Abraham Wallace decided to finish out his remaining two years of eligibility as a graduate student transfer to Texas Tech.

2016

Sophie Tranchina ’16 was the only female sophomore cast in Marymount Manhattan College’s recent production of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. The musical ran for two weekends.

2015 Peyton Finical married Lauren Talbert in April at The White Magnolia in Kentwood, La. Tigers in the wedding party included sisters Logan Talbert ’11 and Anna Talbert ’17, as well as Lindsey Wilkerson ’13, Elizabeth Phillips ’13, and Harrison Domingue ’13.

Leslie Sparks graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in health informatics and information management. She is employed as quality coordinator/employee health and education at Ruston Regional Specialty Hospital and is completing a master’s in health administration.

A keen interest in engineering led Ben Bernhard ’16 to the University of Notre Dame where he has applied the same commitment and drive he demonstrated at Dunham to his college studies.

“Dunham sparked my curiosity and gave me the tools to further my education at Notre Dame. Without the interest and guidance I received at Dunham, I would not be in the position I am now. I felt completely prepared for Notre Dame,” Ben says.

Ben now stands poised for a new academic adventure through the Oxford Program at Notre Dame, a highly competitive study abroad program at the University of Oxford, a prestigious and highly selective collegiate research university located in Oxford, England. Ben, who was invited to apply based on his GPA, submitted a written application and academic recommendations from faculty members. Out of 10 students selected for an interview, Ben is one of four students nominated by Notre Dame for acceptance to the Oxford Program for 2018–2019 academic year.

“The most appealing aspect of the program is Oxford’s unique way of teaching. The tutorial system lines up perfectly with my preferred way of learning,” continues Ben, who will be studying at New College in Oxford.

In the tutorial system, each course is taught by one instructor to a handful of students, sometimes one on one. Students meet with tutors once a week after completing assignments from the previous week.

“To complete the weekly assignments, students must rely heavily on teaching themselves,” he adds.

Ben studies electrical engineering at Notre Dame, but majors are much different at Oxford. “Students at Oxford only major in general engineering, so I will be taking only the courses that pertain to electrical engineering so everything will transfer back to Notre Dame,” Ben explains.

Stories shared by Notre Dame students returning from the Oxford program convinced Ben to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. “When I was deciding whether to apply for a spot in the program, those students encouraged everyone to apply because it was such a rewarding, unique experience for them,” says Ben, looking forward to his Oxford adventure.

“Oxford is full of interesting people from all over the world. Interacting with these people every day will be the most rewarding part of the program. I believe this Oxford experience will give me a new perspective on the world and challenge my current ways of thinking,” he says.
