“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”- Rachel Zoe. Fashion is a statement, a lifestyle choice that helps one express their true authentic self through the outfit they carry. An expression of their individuality, a shadow of their personality and an extension of their mindset, that speaks volumes for them. Be it an immediate impression when one walks into the room or the trail of their presence they leave behind, today’s world is an active consumer of fashion. Be it athleisure, gender fluid, boxy or heavily bold, the youth chooses to stand out, be comfortable and be at Eliferous complete ease with their second skin- their clothes. Along with this sensibility what has also created a stir is the increase in the environmentally conscious brands and shoppers. In a craze to look memorable, the shoppers have also woken up to wear something which comes from an eco-friendly source. A wonderful era of fashion, in the virtually present world, the market has become accessible on the finger tips. Creating a steady rise in the selling and buying curve, social media gives the opportunity to promote, compare and educate about the industry. Grandma Approved A new and unique approach to fashion, these pioneers of sustainability believe in creating garments so timeless, mesmerizing and one of a kind, that they cannot be replicated and shall be passed on for generations. The best friend duo, Priyanka Muniyappa and Anugrah Samuel Phillips took inspiration from the Indian culture of hand me downs, the idea of sustainability and the rising vintage scene of the fashion world outside the country. They decided to take the plunge into creating a brand that celebrates the Grandmoms and their tireless efforts to preserve fabrics and outfits. Be it old clothes or high value vintage outfits, they fit it up to create a phenomenal new product. Mending, upcycling, restoration and a slow process of creating one outfit at a

time, this brand invests all time and energy into finished goods which are highly customized, in an eco-friendly way. Their company Grandma Would Approve turned into the brand, Grandma Approved when Fashion Revolution co-founder, Orsola De Castro took them under her wings. The three categories of garments the brand curates are Vintage, Restored and Reconstructed, with design and aesthetic values that flow in the space between balance and resonance. The most high-end couture are the Reconstructed garments which are labour intensive and time consuming, curated by patching together 5-6 vintage garments. A unique approach to creating unconventional garments for the non-conforming fearless individuals, the designers say. “Our philosophy is to mend and fix every piece that comes our way and help make these products last longer and to breathe into them new life and longevity!”

Studio Margn The brainchild of another duo- Ranjit and Saurabh, this brand claims to look at the world through a child’s lens, without constraints or preconceived notions. Wearing a vision that looks at the world differently, they aim to channelize this innovative eyesight through their creative process. Exploring complex ideas around masculinity and identity, the final products make a powerful social statement just by existing. Be it socio-conceptual designs, rigid silhouettes, uniform inspired concepts, layered aesthetics, unconventional imagery or innovative tactile developments, the brand plays around with challenging materials, hard hitting themes and redirecting conventional use of garment details to convey a message as well as break social constructs. In the designers’ words, “Our concepts signify the philosophy of a new world devoid of differences, with humanity at its core…the essence of the brand lies within empowering small communities by creating meaningful collaborations, a thoughtful approach towards product innovation by creating longer lasting biodegradable pieces embedded with deep meanings, human touch and being honest to ourselves. Margn garments are not just pieces to be worn but to be felt emotionally!”

her creative process, highlighting an element of retro or pop of rich color pallets. Be it the streets of London, an old broken down sewing machine or 17th Century cutlery, reliving the elements of history, that focuses on the design aesthetic hidden in every little detail, helps the designer create pieces that radiate joy and a childlike wonder. Telling stories through clothing, the brand takes pride in incorporating touches of hand painted designs to their garments that give a deeply personal touch. Also, the

Label Advait″ Advait creates clothing that celebrates fine art and bold colours, designed and produced by a small team of local craftsmen consciously and carefully curating designs that explore textures, prints and local crafts. Inspired by spaces and drawn from snippets of memory, the designer Advaitha Ravishankar channels nostalgia into

environmentally conscious processes of upcycling excess stocks of pigments, working with AZO-free and PCB-free dyes, preserving each piece of fabric and saving every drop of dye whenever possible encourages the buyers to purchase consciously and create pieces which are timeless, comforting and functional for a very long time!

Cuin An amalgamation of two meanings, CU stands for Copper and IN for India. Copper is associated with the planet Venus, which symbolises the goddess of love. As Shubhi Aggarwal believes that ‘only Love is the way forward!’ Love has the ability to transcend and transform this world and its people. Also, in copper there is desire, beauty and a necessity, which the designs seek to evoke. A contemporary fashion label based around the idea of optimizing less to the fullest, the brand celebrates love and sustainability. Being environmentally conscious is in the core and the aim is to create garments that enables the consumer to transform the clothing to maximise functionality. In the designer’s words, “By elongating the life of a garment; we offer a more conscious lifestyle to our consumer.” The stunning pieces that the label creates are deeply thoughtful, pleasantly customized, highly conscious, vibrantly designed and speaks for the wearer, of the wearer and about the wearer! Uri A brand by Mrunalini Rao, the vision is to create pieces of art for everyone’s wardrobe. Designed around conscious choices, the creations are tinged with the ethos of zero waste production, biodegradability and ethical employment. With effortless patterns and the color pallete of soft rested hues or deeper stark colors, the designer seeks to bring comfort and a uniqueness to each piece. Rooted and personal, each garment is handmade and speaks its own story of human imperfection in a perfect way. Instilling a faith with human touch, the brand calls out to people through detailed simplistic work. The brand vests unlimited trust in its craftspeople, weavers and embroiders. In the words of the designer, “Uri is our commitment to the lives of our makers and the sustenance of craft by emphasizing on providing employment.” The designer believes in being inspired by muses of all ages- a mother, a grandmother or a grandchild. Style is a feeling shared by the heart, irrespective of age. Uri brings to you a carefully thought out collection that has helped build many lives and now, aims to tell the story of the people who adorn them!

Antar-Agni Instilling naturalism and fluidity in its fabrics, Antar Agni seeks to recreate wardrobe essentials to create an exemplary look. Ujjawal Dubey launched the new line to explore the unconventional and experiment with pleats, wrinkles, criss-cross patterns and impeccable textures. Resonating the brand’s aura the designs use surplus, portrays varied versions of the same element and creates complete looks reimposing continuous details. Their signature style aims to break away from monotony and create a perfectly balanced silhouette. The minute detailing elevates the design into something unique. Ujjawal believes in seeing the fabric like other raw materials, something with its own character and nature, waiting to be explored. Clothing is just the material speaking its own language. Keeping with this sensibility the designer adds, “We love monotones and color repititions…For us, it’s basically the details in the layers of the look from top to bottom like the openings that form mini exposures of the skin and break the monotony.” The brand energy has a nonchalant vibe, with a hidden message of gathering oneself and bursting forth into life. Celebrating the spirit of minimalism coupled with maximalism, the silhouttes elevate the approach to design in bringing boxy grace with a dramatic wink of irony. A tinge of sharp fashion blended with a monotone style, the pieces are crafted in a unique design aesthetic that speaks to every soul.

Eliferous A label by Srishti Kaur, Eliferous is an exclusive couture brand, priviledged by the virtue of its individuality. The vision of the brand aims to create

triumphantly daring looks, which bring out the fierce, free spirited and bold side of an individual. The pieces offer an ounce of drama mixed in with reality, to design ingenious aristocratic silhouettes and designs that set the pieces apart, yet stay in trend. With a dash

DOOR | Fashion of some very unique body jewellery and distinguished hand embroidery designs, the designer brings the frowned upon looks to the league of ‘oh wow!’. The intention is for the garments to last and pleasantly shock with an outlandish flare for fashion, the lines blurring between age, gender and other such social constructs. Experimental and high end, the brazen fashion statement they make definitely raise eyebrows.

Son of a Noble SNOB A brand by Mani Shanker Singh, the guiding principle behind Snob’s stylish catalogue lies in its name. In the words of the designer, “The brand doesn’t just believe that there is a snob living in all of us, but also seeks to remove the negative connotation attached to the word. The brand plans on achieving this by encouraging us to embrace our superior fashion sensibilities instead of shying away from them.” The aim is also to change the old-school thought process into something that is extremely progressive and hip. The garments created can be worn anywhere and everywhere, depending on how one chooses to style it. It is this flexibility that makes the label global. By trying to remain authentic, the designer defines authenticity as a brand that does not need a logo but which can be purely recognized by the look and feel, creating a recall which is strong, distinct and differentiated. DOOR | Fashion essence of sustainability. What we see is a creative process that is curious, interesting, rare, honest and celebrates the essence of free individuality. Without putting anything into boxes, it allows the consumer’s true fashion sense and identity to take the front seat. Welcome the new age thinking!

Sanghamitra Phookan The label and the designer highlight uniqueness trapped in a fluid movement of fabrics. Italian passion blended with Indian tradition, the concoction of the clothing line is conceived around the essential concept of bringing together ancient Indian hand weaving techniques and tailoring traditions with contemporary European Fashion aesthetics. Focusing on quality, craftsmanship and creativity, Sanghamitra is an Indo-Italian sustainable fashion design & lifestyle brand. Celebrating the union of cultures, the brand believes in unity, erasing distances and learning from each other, promoting a universal friendship, re-valorization of traditions and social empowerment/inclusion. The vision is also to simplify and re-value sustainably, while locally sourcing indigenous natural fabrics. From the recesses of Assam, Northeastern India, comes the most in-demand fabric called MUGA, one of the rarest silks in the world, which was historically worn by Indian royals. From formal traditional wear to innovative laidback couture and handcrafted evening wear design pieces, the brand promotes versatility and the idea of slow fashion, creating garments untouched by social status and conformism. With very deeply thought out core values, the label aims to instigate a cultural shift to longevity, value addition and quality maximization, along with positive contextual impact. Using natural dyes, handwoven textures, local artisans and fabrics worn mostly in remote places, Sanghamitra reflects her roots through the garments, experimenting with Eri and Paat silks, handmade and reshaped into unique designs preserving the raw beauty, purity and resilience. Pumped up by all these incredible stories, brands and aesthetic sensibilities, the fashion industry seems motivated for a new era that goes beyond superficiality. A time to dress well and be consciously aware of what one is wearing, along with the why, how and from where of it, the times now highlight feeling good and not just looking good. Style is within you, whether you wear the cheapest clothes or the costliest one, it hardly matters when you stride in that new found belief in yourself that will turn heads. And these brands go beyond aesthetics to give one that belief, where one simply doesn’t wear the outfit but also feels for it. Hence, its time to open your mind and closet to unclutter your fashion sense, rub your eyes and smell the need to promote these fresher labels. Making a fashion statement does not necessarily mean big names, these brands are going out of the way to change the game, both in terms of couture and environment. So, Save yourself, Save the Planet and please, oh please, save Fashion. Buy conscious yet strut in style! 17 | Nov-Dec’21

ince 2020, the music industry has lost several of the greats. Little Richie, Neil Peart, Eddie Van Halen are a few among the many whom we lost, and the year 2021 seems to have taken the same road. Gerry Marsden, an English singer, song-writer and the leader of the Merseybeat band Gerry And The Peacemakers was the first musician to lose the battle of life this year, on January 3rd 2021, followed by many including Jazz legend Chic Corea, Dusty Hill, the bassist of the blues- rock trio, ZZ Top and many more.

filled in for Lars Ulrich in Metallica’s live performance in Download Festival, and for Frost of Satyricon; toured with Korn; guest appeared for System Of A Down and has been a part of 18 albums, 6 EPs, plus a demo, a live album and 4 video albums with Slipknot. In 2010 he won the Drummies Award for Best Metal Drummer and the best drummer for the past 25 years by the readers of Rhythm Magazine. He was also named the greatest drummer by Loudwire readers in 2013 and won the Golden God Award at The Metal Hammer Golden God Awards. Other than being a drummer, Joey On 26th July 2021, another name was added played the role of a guitarist in the to the list of musicians who fell into the horror-core band Murderdolls, produced the endless slumber. But his true musical in the air and nailing it show after show. Yes! personality had never seemed to have made You got it right. We are talking about Nathan itself apparent for the fans. It was there, but Jonas Jordison, better known as Joey or #1. in bits and pieces- sometimes as guitarist, a It is hard to imagine anyone who cherishes song-writer, sometimes, a producer and of the heavier styles of music and is not aware course, a drummer. But these pieces were about the legacy that Joey has left behind. brought together by the guys at Roadrunner His work and performances are scattered Records in 2005 when they decided to throughout the heavy metal spectrum. He celebrate their 25 years by releasing an

album of 18 tracks, that featured 18 vocalists including the likes of Howard Jones (Killswitch Engage), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth), King Diamond (King Diamond) etc; 17 guitarists, such as Rob Barett (Cannibal Corpse), Jim Roots (Slipknot), Jeff Waters (Annihilator), 8 bassists, 7 drummers, 4 keyboardists/ programmer and 4 engineers. They called this album ‘Roadrunner United’. Out of all the musicians 4 team captains were chosen whose responsibility it was to complete the tracks for the album. The captains were Rob Flynn (Machine Head), Dino Cazares (Fear Factory), Matt Heafy (Trivium) and Joey Jordison. Joey produced 5 tracks for the album with producer and engineer, Matt Sepanic. Later Sepanic would go on to produce All Hope is Gone for Slipknot. These tracks are what we could now call what Joey Jordison was about, not #1, not a drummer or a guitarist, not even a song writer, but all of them at once- lover of the art form and the craft. So here we introduce you to 5 tracks that Joey produced for the Roadrunner United giving us a sneak peak into the musical totality of Joey Jordison.

Nov-Dec’21 | 38

DOOR | Music Annihilation by The Hands of God If heavy music is what you want, heavy music is what you shall get. Out of the five tracks Joey produced for this album, this is the heaviest and most brutal track. The track, which lies at number 3 on the track list starts with a riff composed of the right amount of chugs and shreds with drums and low guttural vocals of Glen Benton of Deicide. Rob Barett of Cannibal Corpse is on guitars and has co-written the song with Joey. Two more guitarists have performed on this track, Matt Deveries (Ex- Chimaira and Fear Factory) and the guitar solo has been played by James Murphy (ExObituary, Death and Testament). This track has all the ingredients of a great death metal track: Chugs and shreds, fast double bass, faster blast beats, high mids distorted bass, sweeping guitar solos and not to forget those riffs with pinch harmonic. Every performer has added every bit of energy in the track which easily translates to the listener keeping them thoroughly on their toes and banging that head till it falls off.

Tired’ n Lonely After Annihilation By The Hands of God, the next track produced by Joey is of a less heavier style. Tired n’ Lonely is the 6th track on the album. It features Matt Baumbach of Vision of Disorder, Acey Slade of Murderdolls, and Tom Niemeyer of The Accused on rhythm guitars, Jim Root from Slipknot played solo and harmony on the guitar and Mina Caputo of Life of Agony wrote the lyrics and sang on the track. It’s hard to classify the song into any specific genre. It lies somewhere near punk hard rock and sometimes reminds of the 80s glam rock era. But the track doesn’t miss the mark anywhere. Joey made some hard hitting punchy riffs and also recorded the bass for this piece. His clarity in vision becomes apparent when one notices the simplicity in the arrangements, which manages to make the balance of guitar and bass shine and keeps the adrenaline flowing throughout the track for the listener.

No Way Out After the two tracks Joey took another turn in his stylistic approach in terms of the composition. The track’s sound is closer to the mid to late 90s pop punk bands like Blink 182, Sum 41 etc. Daryl Palumbo gave the lyrics and voice for the song and has done a phenomenal job. Matt Baumbach returns on guitars for the track while Joey continues to play bass and drums. Another factor that elevates the overall experience of the song is Tom Holkenberg, the Dutch composer and multi instrumentalist, better known as Junkie XL who has composed for various Hollywood movies like Mad Max: Fury Road, Black Mass, Deadpool etc. Junkie has mixed, programmed and co- produced the music with Joey. And his presence shines throughout the track. He managed to create a fuller and deeper soundscape and made the track stand out of the rest of the playlist

Constitution Down In the 14th track of the album, Constitution Down, Joey returns to the heavier style of music that we all love- pure and simple metal. It starts with a sweep picking riff that fades in, to finally resolve into a groovy thrash riff. Kyle Thomas lends lyrical skills and heavy operatic voice to the song that turns out to be perfect on the top of the backing track. Out of the many high points almost a minute long chain of guitar solos by James Murphy, Andy Larocque of King Diamond and Rob Barett of Cannibal Corpse becomes almost orgasmic for the shred lovers and melts the face like plastic on a flame. Along with Rob Barett, Matt Deveries returns on the rhythm guitar for the track while Steve DiGeorgio plays bass. Beware of the halftime section, you might end up with a bruised forehead.

Enemy Of The State This is indeed the most distinct piece out of all the songs produced under the captainship of Joey Jordison. It is melodic, ambient and has a massive soundscape. Joey composed this track with Matt Sepanic who also co- produced it along with Josh Silver and Peter Steele of Type O Negative. Peter Steele recorded vocals, played keyboards and also wrote the lyrics. Steve Holt played every string on the song with the exception of bass that was played by Dave Pybus of Cradle of Filth. The track cannot be described in any way. Yes it can be said that layered vocals, the ambient guitars, the piano intro and everything else work together to give you a memorable experience, but like every experience, it can only be understood by living it. No matter what anyone says good or bad about it, they won’t be able to give you even a fraction of understanding of what it feels like to listen to this track. This is one of the tracks that cannot be remade even if the same set of musicians sit together to make exactly the same thing. In the ‘Making of‘ video of the project Joey says, ”I don’t consider myself a really killer guitar player or even a killer drummer. My passion about music is really to create songs that stick to people’s memories and make people feel an emotion, that’s my biggest goal for making a song”. This emotion of his really shines out in these five tracks. For anyone who wants to understand Joey as a musician instead of a drummer or a founding member of Slipknot. These tracks are perfect for the motive. Listen to them if you haven’t and be ready to be astonished by his versatility, conviction a keen ear and love for making music.

The Chemistry of Staying Happy There are thousands of tips and psychological techniques to help you feel happy and learn to rejoice each day. But what if our own body had a say in the matter? Here are some findings from the neuroscientists, the people who know exactly when and why your brain can give you the feeling of total satisfaction

61 | Nov-Dec’21

DOOR | Philosophy 1. Engage in pleasant expectations The process of waiting for something nice, such as food or sex, is similar to the learned salivation response. Our brain experiences pleasure by simply anticipating the fun event. That's why we are so fond of counting the hours and minutes to some particular moment, be it a birthday or a wedding, a meeting with a friend, or just an end to a long working day. 2. Solve problems one at a time

to the development of depression. 5. Learn as much as you can For the brain, acquiring new knowledge means permanent adaptation to a changing environment. Using this process, our brain develops, rewarding its own attempts to absorb and process new information with dopamine, the hormone of joy. If you want to be happy, don't be afraid to try something new, to change your surroundings, to learn new things

Our brain never stops searching for solutions to every problem that worries us. This takes a lot of energy, so whenever the brain gets tired, and the problem remains unresolved we feel anxiety and irritation. On the other hand, for every right decision, our brain rewards itself with a dose of neurotransmitters that calm the limbic system and help us once again see the world in a better light. Therefore, you need to try and deal with one problem at a time. 3. Don't keep things pent up Talk about what bothers you. The processes of worthlessly going through something unpleasant and talking about your predicament involve making use of different parts of the brain. In the latter case, negative emotions have a lesser impact on your well-being. It is, therefore, advisable not to 6. Play sports keep your problems pent up. Whenever you talk about them, Physical activity is stressful for the body. As soon as the stress your brain triggers the production of serotonin and even ends, your body gets a reward: a dose of endorphins, manages to find some positive sides to the situation released by the pituitary gland. The effect is similar to that of opiates, which reduce pain and elevate our mood. You don't need to run marathons to achieve this result, even a walk can do wonders! Incidentally, many writers and philosophers consider taking walks an indispensable part of the creative process. 7. Always try to get a good sleep

4. Touch and embrace To us humans, social interaction is important. Various forms of physical support, especially touch and embraces can speed up a person's recovery from an illness. If you remove physical interaction from your life, the brain perceives it'd absence the way it perceives physical pain: the same brain zones become activated in both instances. This, in turn, triggers the processes that affect your mood and contribute

Start using a sleep mask. As long as your brain thinks it's nighttime, it keeps on sleeping. While we sleep in the dark, our body secretes the hormone melatonin. This hormone slows down all processes in our body, helping it to recover and increasing the level of serotonin in the hypothalamus. If the brain detects a change in light, it triggers the release of stress hormone to awaken the body quickly. Therefore, it is important to sleep 6-8 hours a day and only in dark environments. 8. Learn to say "Thank you" When we say "thank you" to a person, or even fate, we focus ourselves on positive aspects of life. Pleasant memories trigger serotonin production in the anterior cingulate cortex. This technique is often used for treating depression.

OVER THE TOP! he concept that is stories, is one of the most fundamental strands that had been woven in the human psyche even before it was a ‘thing', after all we are nothing but stories, breathing, breeding, beingstories. The fact that stories don’t conform to the rules of time and space, gives them a sense of divinity. Even though they are every conversation or instance and are said to be everywhere, just waiting to be found, there are only a willing few who have the eye or ear to recognise one and shine the light on it for the world to see. And as they say, change is the only constant, with the evolution of civilization, the stories along with the art of storytelling evolved. Cave paintings are probably one of the first recorded stories. Scriptural work or written material seems a bit technologically advanced, where oration appears to be more intimate and raw. It brought with itself a plethora of art forms but more importantly, it elongated the stories’ life. On the other hand, just like writing, storytelling also developed into an art form so massive that it later formed separate branches in itself. Story telling required not just an engrossing story, but also a great performance, to keep the audience consumed. Around the Indian subcontinent, there were people known as “Dastango”, who would roam around and tell stories to make ends meet. It has to be the flare that the dastangos developed while learning to tell their stories better, which kept the audience right at their places, listening to their every word while watching their every move. Dastango, being a person of the bygone times, imagine any of the novelists, songwriters, dancers or even actors, they are all storytellers who are scribbling, singing, dancing and molding their way through the stories. 63 | Nov-Dec’21
