District Council works with Village Agents to distribute Twiddlemuffs across the county The District Council is working in partnership with Gloucestershire Rural Community Council’s Village Agents to distribute Twiddlemuffs to people living with dementia across the county. Over 1100 Twiddlemuffs have been generously donated by caring Forest of Dean residents and more are arriving on a daily basis. The Council has been distributing Twiddlemuffs to care homes and hospitals in the district and now Gloucestershire Village Agents have been given a number of Twiddlemuffs each so they can respond to individuals in the local community as the need arises. Twiddlemuffs are a knitted hand muff with interesting bits and bobs like beads, zips and ribbons attached inside and outside. They were originally designed by the Bradford University Teaching College to provide simple stimulation for active hands, while promoting increased flexibility and brain stimulation and are known to provide reassurance and comfort to dementia sufferers. Cllr Carole Allaway-Martin, Cabinet Member for Housing and Wellbeing said: “We are absolutely delighted at

how the local community has supported this campaign. We have been amazed at the response and we would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to create the Twiddlemuffs, as they’ve shown real flair, with some of the designs taking hours of work to make.” “We would also like to thank the Gloucestershire Rural Community Council’s Village Agents as they continue to work in partnership with us to deliver Twiddlemuffs to county residents living with dementia.” “We encourage anyone with a family member or friend who would benefit from a Twiddlemuff to contact our Community Engagement Team on 01594 810000.” For more information about Twiddlemuffs contact Lena Maller on 01594 812609 or visit the Council’s website page www.fdean.gov.uk/go/twiddlemuff

Golden Years Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

North Sea oil and gas reserves may be running dry, but for exactly 50 years they have been making an enormous contribution to our economy. For it was on 21st September 1965 that BP announced that its barge, Sea Gem, had made the first successful “spud”, or test drill, 40 miles off the Yorkshire coast. Sea Gem was one of a number of competing test rigs prospecting the North Sea at the time. Geologists had been certain for quite some years that the reserves were there, and in mind-boggling quantities. But it was only in 1964, when Britain joined the European Free Trade Association, that the North Sea was considered worth a really serious look because EFTA membership meant the end of the tax incentives that had propped up Britain’s not inconsiderable onshore oil industry. That’s right – Britain’s not inconsiderable onshore oil industry. Anglo-Iranian Oil (which eventually became part of BP) had been operating several wells in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire since the

1930s. Their output had been invaluable during World War II and when Iran nationalised its oil-wells from 195153, and in 1964 they hit peak production. But now, despite the operating difficulties and a technology that was still in its infancy, the North Sea beckoned; and BP engineers based at Eakring near Mansfield improvised the Sea Gem using a French-built work barge, eight specially-made telescopic legs, and a drilling rig. In June 1965, Sea Gem went to work. Sea Gem’s well was actually the fourth to have been spudded in British waters. The first had been for an American company in December 1964, and two more followed in spring and summer 1965. By September all three had been completed and found only dry wells. When Sea Gem started work a further four rigs were also drilling, but showing no signs of success. By 17th September Sea Gem’s drill had bored down to nearly 3,000 metres, and it was starting to look as though this was yet another dry hole. When its instruments began to indicate the presence of gas, nobody got too excited – it wasn’t uncommon to find small pockets as the drill went deeper. But then the fluid

retrieved from the bottom of the well was observed to be frothing and bubbling. Within two days the rig’s crew were certain they had a viable well; and on 21st September BP announced publicly (but very cautiously): “A test in BP’s North Sea well now being drilled by the Sea Gem 42 miles east of Humber has produced gas, but not in sufficient volume to be commercially significant. The well is being drilled deeper in the hope that commercial production may yet be encountered.” It needn’t have been so cautious. By mid-December, that first well was yielding ten million cubic feet of natural gas a day – enough to justify the building of pipelines to the shore. It was the start of a new era. There was a tragic postscript, though, for the drilling of the North Sea’s first successful well was immediately followed by the deaths of its first victims. On the night of 27th December, while Sea Gem was moving to another test site, two of its legs gave way. Sea Gem quickly collapsed and sank beneath the icy waters; and although most of the crew were rescued, 13 men died.

Auction Anecdote Although I have worked in salerooms for over twenty-five years I still constantly meet new and interesting items which I have never seen before - this I suppose is one of the main attractions of the job. However it is not often that one is introduced to something quite so weird and wonderful as one of the entries brought in for our antiques sale on the 24th July. The item in question is not only strange in itself, but it also has the strangest name - which is ‘God in a bottle’. It consists of a group of finely carved miniature wooden items usually on a trade related or religious theme place in an old glass drinks bottle – very similar in fact to the age old clichéd classic of a ship in a bottle. However ‘God in a bottle’ is far rarer than a ‘ship in a bottle’ and originates from Irish folk art created by displaced Irish workers in Northern Britain during the late 19th century. Of course I have had to research all this information as I had not the faintest idea what this ‘thing’ was when it first appeared in my saleroom – in fact I was initially rather worried that the very murky contents were intended for consumption and was very relieved to find that they were not. Our example included a range of carved woodworking and gardening tools arranged around a central crucifix and it was given a conservative estimate of £50/£80 due to it’s needing a thorough cleaning inside - which did not look to be the easiest of restoration jobs. However the internet and saleroom ‘magic’ worked once again and their was a considerable amount of interest – folk art and treen is very popular at present and four ‘God in a Bottle’ examples were a star item in last years Tate Britain’s ‘Folk Art Exhibition’ which must have helped as well. In the end the bottle sold to a specialist dealer on the telephone who had to fight the internet for it with a winning bid of £360. I just hope that if I ever encounter another ‘God in a bottle’ during my career my client will be truly impressed when I know exactly what it is! - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Tips from The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world and he lives right here in the Cotswolds.

Happiness Europe is now being challenged with a massive immigration situation. This is heading towards epic proportions as people flee from terror and others risk their lives to hopefully have a better life. I have been working in the Ukraine and learnt that 1½ million people have been displaced due to the Russian invasion. What has that got to do with happiness? When we meet people and enquire how they are the standard British response is “not too bad, thank you”. It’s as though we are expecting to be bad. We have been conditioned to grumble, moan and find fault with our lot. The reality and truth is we are pretty fortunate and should be much happier than we admit. Let me share with you something that I promise will make you happier and dare I say more prosperous. Liggy Webb, the world authority on modern life skills, in her brilliant book ‘Thank You’ (she lives in Cheltenham) develops the concept of an attitude

of gratitude. We all know of the amazing power of the brain and when it is thinking positively it really is mind-blowing what our brain will do and achieve for us. So here is what you can do to become a little happier: 1. Just before you go to sleep at night recall three things that happened during the day that made you happy. 2. If you are able to say thank you to God – great – if not just say and think thank you. You will go to sleep on positive thoughts and start developing an attitude of gratitude. 3. The following day your first thoughts should be a thank you for the night – for being alive – and a thank you for what you have. These first thoughts flash through your mind in a few seconds, but are all positive and will kick-start your brain into its success mode. Cake and Bake Lemon Crumble Cheesecake Bars Tangy and creamy with a golden buttery crumble topping, these cheesecake bars make a delicious sweet treat. For a smoother cheesecake filling, use full-fat soft cheese instead of the ricotta.

Ingredients: THE BASE • 250g plain flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 140g butter, chilled and diced • 125g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten THE FILLING • 750g ricotta cheese • 225g caster sugar • Zest and juice of 1 lemon • 3 medium eggs, beaten • 100ml soured cream • 1 tbsp cornflour • Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate

Makes 12 slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling Page 18

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/Gas Mark 4. Grease an 18cm x 28cm tray-bake tin and line the base with baking paper. 2. To make the base, sift together the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs then stir in the sugar. Reserve a third of the mixture and chill in the fridge. Stir the beaten egg into the rest of the mixture to make a crumbly dough. Spread into the base of the prepared tin and press down firmly in an even layer. 3. Bake the cheesecake base for 15-20 minutes, or until pale golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 160C/ Fan 140C/ Gas Mark 3. 4. To make the filling, beat the ricotta cheese, sugar and lemon juice and zest in a bowl until creamy then gradually beat in the eggs. Fold in the soured cream and cornflour and spread the mixture over the warm base. 5. Sprinkle the reserved fine crumble mixture over the top in an even layer. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until set and pale golden. Leave in the tin to cool completely then chill for 2-3 hours. Slice into 12 bars and serve decorated with fresh mint sprigs.

TIP

For an extra fruity flavour, scatter some fresh blueberries or raspberries over the cheesecake mixture before sprinkling with the crumble mixture.

Triangle Radio

We are a community radio fully run by volunteers who have a passion for radio and the community. Coleford Music Festival played host to a whole load of great local talent in August and Triangle Radio happened to be on hand to capture the event. Local artists such as Bob Smith and the Hickory Stick Boys played out from the main stage and the likes of Josh Hopkins and 15 year old Ellen Coombe played live in the studio and at buskers corner. We built a temporary studio in the town (Courtesy of the Town Council) and lined up a presenting team that carried out interviews and provided live content across the weekend. Huge thanks to the volunteers at Triangle that made our programming a success, comprising of a presenting team made up of Ryan Davies, Clive Southerton, Phil Meek, Amanda Cox and Ian Coe, and interviews and behind the scenes with Dan Green, Chris Arscott and Martin Harrison and the newest member of the team Matt Fraser jumping right in with a few quality interviews.

Lovely Lawns by Pippa Greenwood Almost every garden has a lawn, and there is a lot you can do to keep it in good condition. Don’t wait until spring but get to work now with some autumn lawn care to keep your lawn looking healthy and green. Large weeds in small lawns are best removed by hand, perhaps using a sturdy old kitchen knife – perfect for removing dandelions, small clumps of daisies and other weeds missed by the mower. You should also take a look at the level of moss in the lawn: when green and luxuriant it can look quite attractive, but once it dies out the lawn will look really awful. On the whole, moss in lawns is encouraged by compaction, poor drainage of the soil and lawn surface and by excessive shading, perhaps by nearby trees or herbaceous plants in adjacent borders. It is worth doing anything you can to alleviate these problems, and for shading you should prune back shrubs which overhang the lawn or have trees professionally crown thinned or lifted, so that more light gets through to the lawn. Herbaceous plants are easily dealt with by using bamboo canes and string to ease them up and away from the grass. Compaction is relatively easy Page 22

to deal with, and in small areas where the problem is not too bad, you can use a normal garden fork. Drive this into the lawn every 10 – 15 cm (4 – 6 in) and ease it back and forth slightly to enlarge the holes created by the tines of the fork. This creates some drainage channels, which will also improve aeration. On very heavy sites or where compaction is bad, use a hollow tine aerator. These can be bought as attachments for some lawnmowers, or you can buy or hire a dedicated machine or piece of equipment. A hollow tine aerator removes cylinders of turf and the soil beneath, thus producing a better effect than using a garden fork. Once aerated, brush a sandy top dressing mixture into all the holes, using a mixture of sieved garden soil and horticultural sand, perhaps mixed with a small quantity of sieved leaf mould. The top dressing ensures that the holes are kept open to allow better drainage and aeration over a longer period.

before you attempt to rake it out. Raking out can be combined with scarifying, where you use a spring tined rake to aggressively rake the surface of the lawn, so that dead moss, thatch (the accumulated bits of dead grass and other lawn debris) and any other surface debris are removed. Once done, you will find that the lawn looks a lot worse than it did when you started, as it will look thinner and more moth-eaten. However, scarifying helps to ensure that the grasses receive plenty of air and allows for better re-growth; have faith, the situation will improve.

Use a proprietary moss killer if moss is really out of control, applied exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions; you should make sure that the moss is killed off completely

If you still have bare areas once you have improved the texture of the soil and fixed drainage problems, then re-seed or over-seed using a suitable grass-seed mixture. To improve germination and speed of growth, pin a piece of horticultural fleece or Enviromesh over the newly sown area. This will help keep it warmer and prevent birds from stealing the grass seed.

Helping Earthquake Victims in Nepal The two powerful earthquakes that hit Nepal in recent months have wreaked wide-scale havoc on both social and economic fronts, leaving the country disillusioned. As a result of this we organised various fundraising initiatives both at the Woolaston Inn and with the 39 Signal Regiment (my previous workplace) in order to provide some relief to the victims of the earthquakes. A total of ÂŁ4420.00 (approx. NCR 660,000) was raised. The money was sent through remittance and then collected by me personally after I travelled to Nepal on the 7th of June. I found it very challenging to decide who to donate the relief funds to as so many lives and areas had been badly affected and everyone was looking for help. I needed to make an informed decision about where the money would reach the ones who needed it most. Facing time constraints and with only limited funds available, the conclusion was reached to donate the funds to the following beneficiaries: 1. BAISARI LANDSLIDE VICTIMS A small community consisting of 17 households was completely buried when a massive dry landslide fell from a vertical rock above. The landslide had also blocked the fast-flowing Kali Gandaki river for 16 hours which provoked the country to issue a red alert flood warning, affecting millions of people. Fortunately, no lives were lost; however, locals lost Page 24

everything they owned. Now they are living in temporary shelters on the riverbank, two miles downstream. Rs. 100,000 was given to these unfortunate people - your help is much appreciated!

2. DANDAKHARKA VILLAGE This was the highlight of my trip to Nepal! Dandakharka is a small village situated in the Solukhumbu district, about 280km North-East of Kathamandu. One of the remotest parts of this region is inhabited, mostly, by the Sherpas who were very badly affected by the second earthquake. Astonishingly they were left to deal with the crisis alone, without any help from the government, for 5 weeks. I was the first person to arrive in the village with a relief package - some people were even brought to tears when I handed them the relief

funds. I give my wholehearted thanks to Ankaji Sherpa who accompanied me to this remote place thinking that this community had a greater need for help than his own, even though he had been living in tents in Kathmandu with his wife and daughter since the first earthquake. Rs. 200,000 was distributed amongst the 30 households that form the community. It made my 2 day-journey through the most dangerous and rugged mountain terrains, both on road and by foot, most satisfying and worthwhile!

3. THAMI COMMUNITY – REHABILITATION AND REBUILDING PROJECT Phuska Village in the Dolakha district, about 120km North-East from Kathmandu, is home to the Thami community. This small and marginalised community,

consisting of ten families, suffered most from the disaster. They lost everything, including four heads of families (who were the sole breadwinners) and leaving behind incomplete families of small children and bereaved mothers. Due to their ethnicity, Thami do not receive wider community support. The remaining community members now live in shelters provided by the government, trying to hold together in these desperate times. I was very disappointed that I could not visit this community, because of roads being blocked off due to landslides and swollen rivers. Unfortunately, I also did not have enough remaining time to make the trip by foot. I decided to leave the majority of the relief funds (Rs. 330,000) to help this community acquire better shelters and to build a community hall. Mr Yam Kumar Shrestha, a good friend of mine and also a SSP (Senior Superintendent of Police), is currently overseeing this project from Kathmandu. This will take a few months to complete, after the monsoon has passed. 4. MRS BELKUMARI JUGJALI This was one of the rarer cases that was brought to my attention. Mrs Belkumari Jugjali sadly lost her husband Tirha, aged 38, as a consequence of the earthquake. Tirha was on a tree cutting leafy branches to feed the cattle when the earthquake struck. The tremor caused him to fall off the tree and to injure his neck. Unfortunately, the incident

happened in an area less affected by the earthquake which is the reason it went unnoticed. After five weeks in hospital Tirha passed away, leaving his young wife and three 3 young children behind. After the incident was verified by the village committee, Rs. 30,000 was donated to his bereaved family. THE NEED FOR CONTINUED HELP The scale of the devastation caused by the earthquakes was so widespread that although the infrastructure can be rebuilt, the damage caused to many people’s lives may never be repaired. There are so many who still require help, including hundreds of orphaned children. Moreover there are also the dangers of long term psychological and mental health issues. The effect of the monsoon is sure to cause further disruption to the hills as the earth has been largely disturbed, with landslides, floods and avalanches having caused even more damage. There is a great need for continued aid! I cannot thank everyone

involved enough for their generous support in raising much needed funds to help the victims of these terrible earthquakes. With your continued support, these people will receive the help they desperately need. I will personally deliver any donations directly to the affected communities and individuals on your behalf. Please contact me should you wish to find out more about how you can help. Which are the Main Vaccines Available for my Cat? Vaccinations and boosters are part and parcel of owning any pet. Here are some of the diseases posing the greatest risk to your cat’s health. Cat Flu The existence of many different strains of flu means that it will never be completely wiped out, but a cat flu vaccine provides a degree of protection against this disease, which can spread rapidly between cats. Infectious Enteritis A widespread virus, Feline Infectious Enteritis can be fatal. It is

PETS

a severe infection of the gut caused by the feline parvovirus, which can be picked up from infected animals and equipment, including bedding and food dishes. Feline Leukaemia Feline Leukaemia is transmitted via saliva, and can be deadly if not overcome by the cat’s own immune system. The vaccine offers some protection for outdoor cats. Indoor cats may not need it due to their low exposure to risk. Feline Chlamydia Cats between the ages of five weeks and nine months are said to be at particular risk of Feline Chlamydia, a disease characterised by conjunctivitis and sneezing. The vaccine does

not protect against the infection, but helps to reduce its effects. Which vaccines should you give your cat? This depends on several factors: • Its age and general health • Reactions to any previous vaccinations • Its risk of exposure to disease An initial course of vaccines may be given to kittens as young as seven weeks old, with regular annual boosters needed throughout life in order to maintain immunity. http://www.rspca.org.uk/ adviceandwelfare/pets/general/ vaccinating http://www.pdsa.org.uk/pethealth-advice/kittens-and-cats/ health#vaccinations

Health Sitting Comfortably? It Could Be Killing You. By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Even if you exercise regularly, too much sitting could significantly shorten your life. With employment and entertainment becoming ever more sedentary, sitting down for hours is the norm for many of us. But in the last decade, research has increasingly proved that prolonged sitting is a health risk in itself, regardless of how much or how little exercise we do, and can cause irreversible damage. Disturbing rEsEarch A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2008 estimated that for every hour we sit watching TV after the age of 25, our life expectancy decreases by 21.8 minutes, while a 2012 study in the Lancet estimated that inactivity causes 9% of premature deaths. So how does sitting shorten life expectancy? Recent studies showed a 147% increase in the incidence of cardiovascular events (incidents causing heart muscle damage) and a 112% increase in diabetes risk amongst those spending longest sitting, Page 30

compared to those who sat least. Inactivity is known to increase breast and colon cancer risk too - and unsurprisingly, obesity. James Levine, Director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, has said he believes sitting is more dangerous than smoking. “We are sitting ourselves to death.” We know prolonged inactivity results in decreased bone density, and evidence now shows it reduces the action of enzymes that maintain healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Some experts have suggested the effects of prolonged sitting may partially resemble those of zero gravity, causing the accelerated ageing, bone and muscle loss that occurs in astronauts. Unfortunately, exercise sessions aren’t a “cure for too much sitting,” explains Professor Marc Hamilton, from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, in Men’s Health. “The average person could never do enough to counteract the effect of hours and hours of chair time.” tackling thE ProblEm A moderately active lifestyle which includes housework, walking or gardening is ideal. Take regular active breaks from seated activities like reading and watching TV: mop the floor, take a quick walk, or do a few minutes of ‘step’ (an exercise step isn’t required. Stairs will

do). You could also consider: • Reducing your sitting time by standing on public transport, walking or biking to the station, or getting off the bus earlier. • Standing or walking while on the phone. • A standing desk, a desk that converts between sitting and standing, or a unit that converts your normal desk to a standing one. • A treadmill desk (or attach a bracket or stand to your treadmill). • Sitting on a yoga ball; your core muscles will be used constantly to retain balance. • Walking or organising a sporting activity at lunchtime. • Active Sitting. It won’t replace standing or walking, but makes sitting healthier. Try raising your heels up and down; contracting your stomach muscles; raising and lower your lower leg from knee height or whole leg from hip height; swivelling your office chair using just your hips; tensing, stretching and bending your arms; rolling your shoulders. • Using the Pomodoro Technique, described here: http://pomodorotechnique. com/. This time management technique inserts regular breaks – that’s the time to get active. So next time you’re about to start something, stop. Does it have to be done sitting down? If not, then don’t sit! Bear in mind, though, that constant standing isn’t ideal either. Experts recommend aiming for a 50/50 split between sitting and activity.

Home & Interiors A Stitch In Time While The Sun Shines By Katherine Sorrell tackle each area, and call in an expert if you lack the necessary equipment and skills.

Roofs

Maintaining the fabric of your house is a bit of a chore - but keep on top of it and you will reap the rewards, says Katherine Sorrell Keeping a regular eye on your property and repairing it when necessary – especially before winter – is an insurance policy against major problems. It will make life easier in the long run, save money and help maintain the value of your home. As Marianne Suhr, historic buildings surveyor and coauthor of Old House Handbook, says: ‘It really is a stitch in time. Buildings can quickly decline if they are not maintained properly. A missing roof tile can lead to water ingress, then dry rot, death watch beetle and even structural collapse.’ Start by finding out what your home is made of and how it is built, then identify areas of concern. Work out how to Page 34

Twice a year, use binoculars to check the condition of your roof and chimney. Look out for general damage, split lead work, loose mortar, missing, slipped or broken tiles or slates and anything else suspicious. From inside your loft, check for evidence of leaks, and examine supporting timbers for signs of deterioration. Brush moss growth off roofs, or fit copper growth inhibitors. Be very careful - it is often better to commission a professional to do roof work.

Rainwater goods

Problems with gutters and downpipes cause damp patches, but are often easily remedied. Observe where water is going during heavy rainfall – is it flowing off the roof into the gutters, down the downpipes and into the drains? If not, perhaps leaves, moss or other debris have blocked your rainwater goods, or a joint has come apart, or water is gathering in one area. Patch or weld metal, replace damaged plastic sections and add extra brackets where there is sagging. Clear gutters, downpipes and drains regularly and redecorate metal rainwater goods when necessary.

Walls

Damp in walls might be caused by the ground level outside being higher than inside. If so,

dig back to the correct level, but if problems persist, dig down further and lay a gravel path to create breathing space for the wall. Remove and replace any damaged render, and re-point mortar if it has weathered or is very loose. Although they are everyone’s biggest fear, cracks in walls can be caused by many things – but most are nothing to worry about. When you spot a crack, mark the end of it with a pencil or take a photo and note the date, so you can keep track of it. The Building Research Establishment suggests that cracks less than 5mm wide that do not grow any larger, will generally not affect structural integrity and can simply be redecorated. Contact a structural engineer if you have concerns.

Doors and windows

Remove flaking paint from timber doors and windows and redecorate once the wood has dried out. If there is rot, fill carefully or cut out the section and replace. Overhaul sash windows, by re-aligning, replacing cords and adjusting the weights; add brushes so they are soundproof and don’t rattle. Rusty metal windows should be cleaned, repaired and re-squared. Plane and/or sand sticking wooden doors and windows, and check that locks and hinges are doing their job properly. Oil them every now and then to keep them in tip top condition. Dishing out the Delectables...

So many cakes, so little time! I had 24 large traditional cakes and 75 scones to bake for a tea party at the weekend. It was worth it though; down to the very last drop of lemon drizzle mixture that I could scrape from the side of the bowl and cast my expert opinion upon. The taste buds do enjoy a good bake up and the kitchen smells sweetly aromatic for the best part of the week. Grated lemon and lime rind; shredded ginger, carrots and fresh coconut, and mustn’t forget the jars of homemade lime curd which is probably my favourite flavour to make. A lovely filling for the coconut and lime Victoria sandwich as well as a juicy surprise filling for the cupcakes. There were four flavoured Victoria sponges this time – coconut & lime, champagne & strawberry, chocolate & orange and vanilla with fresh raspberries - all filled with buttercream. This particular afternoon tea consisted of cakes only but I do offer a menu which can be built upon depending on how much you wish to spend and what type and number of sandwiches and cakes are desired. Also supplied is the oh so pretty vintage crockery and cutlery, 2 and 3 tier cake stands and glasses too. I have had some parties in my dining room and one very lucky day was able to set up a very pretty setting in the garden. For a small party I can hold up to 10 people in the dining room; for those wanting a larger number I can travel to a venue of your choice. Gluten free and dairy free available on request. Please call to discuss any queries you may have.

Second round of small community grants open for applications

Voluntary and community groups across the district have been given a further opportunity to apply for a one off grant of up to £2000. There is a total sum of £5000 available from the Council to support local groups who can demonstrate how they work in partnership with others and how their goals will benefit the local community, as well as innovative ideas for building community capacity projects. Cllr Terry Hale, Cabinet Member for the Community said: "This is a further opportunity for local voluntary or community groups from across the district to apply for local funding. The funding provides a great chance for people to get together and work with their community to achieve things for themselves. So far this year 19 local community groups have been awarded a share of £14,800. We hope that more applications come in for this round of smaller grants so that more communities benefit from our District Council funding. We will be looking for more groups who can demonstrate a good sense of partnership working in their communities to achieve sustainable long lasting results for local people." All submitted applications will be rated against set criteria with grants being given to those who meet the criteria and show the best value for money. Application packs are available on our Community Grants website page. Alternatively you can contact the Community Engagement Team on 01594 810000 or email community.engagement@fdean.gov.uk The call for additional applications is open with immediate effect and will close once the remaining funds have been allocated. Forest Leisure challenge embraces rugby festival fever Forest Leisure invites residents to take part in a rugby themed challenge for the chance to win fantastic prizes, as the nation prepares to celebrate a landmark year for the game. Forest Leisure is offering members and non-members the opportunity to join the one million participants taking part in ‘Festival of Rugby’ activities and celebrations in organised events across the UK. Getting involved couldn’t be easier, simply complete a ‘Rugby Challenge’ registration form and start to score points each time you attend a fitness suite session, take part in a fitness class or enjoy a swim at any of the Forest Leisure centres during September and October. The exciting challenge is open to all ages and with lots of fun activities on offer registered participants will soon see their points build up. The more points a person has the more chance there is to win a prize! Extra bonus points will be awarded to everyone taking part if the England, Wales or Scotland rugby teams win a match. The ‘Rugby Challenge’ will run from 1 September until 31 October. Participants are encouraged to share their workouts on facebook and twitter using the hashtags #FestivalofRugby2015 and #forestleisure and ‘check-in’ at every visit as part of the fun. For more information visit www.forestleisure. org.uk or pop in to your local Forest Leisure centre reception at Lydney, Coleford, Cinderford, Newent and Sedbury.
