drossner From PAGE 10 the sixth inning of a 3-2 win. Drossner began the season as the Terps No. 1 midweek starter, and in five nonconference starts, he went 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA. That success has continued even as he’s pitched against more ACC teams. “As a pitcher, you just want to go out and throw as many strikes as you can,” Drossner said. “The mentality is still the same. If I’m just going out there, doing my job and throwing strikes and giving my team a chance to win, then it’s just another ballgame.” Right-hander Jared Price started the first four Sunday games for the Terps, but after giving up six runs (four earned) in three innings during a 7-0 loss to Florida State on March 9, he was removed from the rotation.
LEFT-Hander Jake Drossner gave up one run in four innings in an April 13 loss to Virginia Tech and has started the final game of each ACC series since. rebecca rainey/the diamondback Right-hander Kevin Mooney, the Terps closer, got a start the next weekend. Left-handers Tayler Stiles and Zach Morris then received starts in consecutive weeks. But none of those pitchers got through more than five innings in their auditions for the final spot in the weekend rotation.
Drossner, though, allowed one run in four innings in a 6-4 loss to Virginia Tech on April 13 and has been the Sunday starter ever since. Since Drossner joined the weekend rotation, the Terps have won two conference series. In the first five ACC series, the Terps clinched one series victory.
Two of the Terps’ three wins this weekend were by two runs or fewer and none of the starters pitched with more than a two-run lead. Despite the pressure of a slim lead, they allowed just two extrabase hits, and the Fighting Irish didn’t score a run after the fifth inning. Because of that weekend s ta b i l i ty, Sze fc d o e s n ’t have to worry about finding the right mix of starters in midweek nonconference games. The solid pitching staff has kept games close, w h i c h h a s a l l o we d t h e offense to clinch victories late in games. “That’s their job,” shortstop Blake Schmit said. “You got to come out and throw zeroes on the board and just be confident with your defense. And we’re doing a pretty good job of putting runs on the board for them.” psuittsdbk@gmail.com

into the left-center field gap to clear the bases and give the Terps the lead for good. Datil, who finished fourth in total bases this season, went 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs. Watten praised the freshman for adapting quickly to softball at the college level while battling several injuries during the season. “Kylie has really done a great job. The freshmen come in and they can’t really be prepared for the grueling schedule,” Watten said. “For her to come out and end this series the way she did and show what kind of player she really is was great. She’s really worked through a lot this season.” For the first time in a series this season, the Terps scored more than five runs in each game. And with the help of Beards’ three-run bomb
