Keith ingham 1950 – 2016 WiLL iNghAm

N

ewport always had a special place in Keith’s heart. He was born in Devon on 21 October 1950. He moved to Newport as a young boy when his dad, Bill Ingham, was appointed Head of the Primary School and moved to the village with his wife Rose. The family lived for many years in the School House in Wicken Road and Keith could often be found practising his football skills in the Primary School playground. He was one of five children. He had an older sister, Denise, and was big brother to Bruce, Lorraine and Roy. Keith attended Newport Grammar School and excelled at many subjects

including maths and sport. His was a very familiar face around the village, with holiday jobs including delivering the post and working at the Nursery. His gift with maths led him to pursue a successful career in accountancy until he retired in 2013 through ill health. Keith loved playing for the local football team, where he was well known for his team spirit, scoring goals and celebrating wins and losses with enthusiasm in The Star & Garter. He also played hockey for Saffron Walden. Keith married Lesley after meeting her at his dad’s school, where she was doing her teaching practice. They lived in Wales and then returned to Essex, settling first in Manuden and then back in Newport with their two children Will and Charlotte, who both also attended Newport Free Grammar School. Keith was a very active ‘touchline dad’, supporting Will in all of his sports, and regularly turned his hand to making the Newport cricket team teas. Later in his life Keith moved to

Arthur Butler 1937 – 2016

A

rthur Butler was born on September the 24th 1937 in Chelsea, London. He was the son of Charles Hubert Archibald Butler and his mother was Johanna Pemberton Jackson. He was educated at Summerfields Prep School and Eton College, where he was a cox in the Eton rowing Eight. In 1955-1957 he did National Service in the 17th and 23rd Lancers and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was nearly called to fight over the Suez Crisis in 1956 which would have been the 1st Oil war but the conflict de-escalated before it came about. Arthur went to Cirencester between 1957 and 1959 where he qualified as a chartered Surveyor and where he formed the Jazz band the Aristocats

Bishop’s Stortford to be close to Will and Charlotte and his two grandchildren, Thomas and Joseph, but still returned to Newport to have a drink at the Working Men’s Club or White Horse. Keith passed away at Princess Alexandra hospital, surrounded by his family, on 24th April this year. And so Keith ends his journey back here in Newport, the village which has meant so much to him over the years. He is buried in Newport, alongside his mum, dad, sister Den and brother Bruce. NN

of which he was the drummer. They played at many parties in London and it was one of his main passions throughout his life. In the early 60s he joined his father’s stockbrocking firm ‘Mitten and Butler’ founded in 1932 and he became junior partner. In 1968 he married Anne Mary Claire Churchward by whom he had three children, Edward, Juliet and Harriet. In 1969 his father Charles Butler handed down Shortgrove Estate, which he succesfully farmed for about 50 years. One of his main passions was pheasant shooting and he ran a shoot at Shortgrove for 45 years. He also hosted a local cricket team called the Flycatchers for matches at Rickling Green and was a good opening batsman.

He met Susan Hobaday in 1985 and had many happy years with her spent between London which he loved and Shortgrove. Arthur was a very kind, generous man and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family and is survived buy his second wife Susie, 3 children, 3 stepchildren, 2 grandchildren and 7 step-grandchildren.
