Sue Oliver Dog Grooming Studio Ltd is a Dog Grooming School which is managed by Sue Oliver. Having had over 20 years’ experience in the dog grooming industry along with teaching, Sue runs the dog grooming school to offer training to people who want to become dog groomers themselves. She is an expert in teaching and has Qualified Teacher & Learning Skills Status with the Society of Education and Training. The qualifications in Dog Grooming that Sue holds are vast and include International Certified Master Groomer with ICMG UK and City and Guilds Dog 7750 Grooming.

Teaching began for Sue at Derby College, Broomfield Hall many years ago and she decided to set up her own grooming school in the last 5 years. Since setting up her grooming school Sue has had great success with students studying on the course and achieving their goals to become dog groomers. Many of her students have set up their own successful dog grooming businesses.

The grooming school has a team of qualified staff to ensure that students have a great learning experience, students train in a commercial salon, with a range of customers dogs to get a real hands-on approach.

The courses offered are part time and include the Certified Professional Groomer and City and Guilds Dog Grooming with a maximum of 5 students in a class.

Woore Watkins Limited is a small, long established family business that prides itself in offering a friendly personal service no matter the size of the project.

The company was formed in 1947

by Peter Woore. Peter’s family background was steeped in architecture and the arts, and he quickly established himself working from the family home on Friar Gate.

The company is still there today.

He became well known for his arts and crafts style, and ‘Peter Woore’ houses are as much in demand today as when they were originally built.

The company has gone through a number of changes over the years.

When Peter became ill a partnership was formed, The Peter Woore Watkins Partnership. Haydn Watkins had started working at the practice at fifteen while still at school. It was his driving ambition to become an architect, and he duly qualified in 1989, the same year as the partnership was formed. With Peter’s death the business was run by Ian

Woore his son, who also followed in the family tradition of architecture, together with Haydn. Ian has his own distinctive style being highly creative but well-grounded in the practical skills.

As Ian progressed towards retirement the running of the company fell to Haydn, who is still practicing today, upholding the traditional values of the company adding his ethos. History repeated itself when an Ashbourne builder asked if his son could do his experience with the company whilst training at university. Needless to say he now works closely with Haydn ensuring the company maintains its distinctive style and personal service.

The company specialises in domestic projects from the smallest extension to one off houses and small housing development.

Inn Focus:

The Creaky Floorboard, Kedleston Road, Derby Heading away from Derby along Kedleston Road, the Jonty Farmer soon hoves into view. Just before here though, on the same side of the road, is an attractive late Victorian double fronted, end of terrace property now known as the Creaky Floorboard. This was home to Jim and Josie Woodman for some 16 years before they had the brain-child of converting it to pub usage, and, in my view, it’s a quite brilliant conversion.

Upon entering, the first thing that strikes you is the beautiful floor tiling in the entrance hall. The two former living rooms off, one with bar servery, are high ceilinged with cornices typical of the period, and eye-catching artwork is indicative of considerable thought having been expended here. Beyond

these front rooms is the former garage, now tastefully converted with a backdrop of posters which include a rare original from the Beatles’ Liverpudlian birthplace, The Cavern. Outside at the back is a delightful, small garden with stylish metal tables and chairs and a water feature.

Derby Brewing Company Brew Special Beer to Aid Rams’ Recovery Drink real ale and help save the Rams That’s the message from Derby Brewing Company.

The Rams’ plight has rocked Derby with the club going into administration. 20p from every pint of the cleverly named Paulo One Hop will be donated to the stricken football club. Top brass at DBC, Trevor Harris and son, Paul, have long been season ticket holders so the gesture is heartfelt. Rams’ fans will doubtless recall Puerto Rican Paulo Wanchope’s stunning solo goal in

a famous win at Old Trafford in 1997. The new brew was launched in the upper floor function room at the Greyhound, Friar Gate, Derby, and our photograph shows Paul Harris pulling the first pint. There was considerable Rams’ memorabilia on display, kindly loaned for the event by the Rams’ Trust.

Derby County’s administrators have welcomed the Derby brewery’s initiative and the pale beer is on many a bar-top in Derby and beyond.

When the last lockdown ended, the first pub that Trevor Harris, head honcho of Derby Brewing Company, visited was the Creaky and a brace of his beers can usually be sampled here including the aptly named Nailed It. Additional breweries represented when I called were Durham, Leatherbritches and Oakham. Hartshorn’s Ignite from Alfreton Road is frequently featured.

In autumn, the opening hours were extended and open mic nights are drawing in new customers who appreciate the ambience and intimacy. The story doesn’t end here though as

Jim and Josie have bought the brewing equipment from the now sadly defunct Rowditch Inn on Uttoxeter New Road. Josie is taking the requisite training and aims to be brewing commercially in early 2022. We wish her well and look forward with keen anticipation to sampling the wares of Derby’s newest brewery.

South East Derbyshire Villages’ Tour Rural south east Derbyshire is an attractive area the Derbeian hasn’t covered before so we’re looking at what’s on offer here, pubs-wise. good fayre to sate one’s appetite it isn’t surprising that the Oak has featured in every CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 1977. And this year’s accolade of CAMRA’s Golden Award saw the Oak in an elite group of just 32 UK pubs considered to have made a significant contribution to pub life during CAMRA’s 50 years.

There’s only one place to start and that’s Green Lane, Ockbrook, where set back from the road is the venerable Royal Oak. Ever since 30th April 1953, the multi roomed village local has been in the same family and the Queen’s Coronation in June of that year was broadcast to locals outside in the days when many didn’t possess a TV. When Lew and Olive Wilson moved into the Offiler’s (Derby) house all those years ago the rent was £1 a week and bitter and mild were served through handpumps. Two cottages stood in front which were subsequently demolished to make way for the car park as car ownership boomed. Lew and Olive bought the Oak in 1989 but, sadly, Lew passed away in 1994. Steve Hornbuckle had earlier married their daughter, Jean, and together with Jean’s sister, Sally, they’ve continued to make this a destination pub for locals and visitors alike. Olive died a few years ago. Draught Bass is a staple here and with 3 changing guest beers and

A little further along Green Lane and set above the road is the Cross Keys run by former local cricketer, Ian Darlington, for the past dozen years. An intimate interior features a selection of old Rams’ players photographs including the first division title winning side in rebellious mood as they contemplate action in the wake of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor’s resignations in 1973. Football fans are, indeed, kept entertained by the Sky Sports screens here. A cursory glance at the menu showed fresh stone-baked pizzas together with burgers, kebabs and halloumi wraps. On the bar were handpulls dispensing Oakham Citra, St Austell Proper Job, Pedigree and Doom Bar. Outside, a marquee has been erected on the astro-turf.

South East Derbyshire Villages’ Tour

In the shadow of All Saints parish church, sits the long, low slung, White Swan on Church Street.

A deep, sub-divided public bar was buzzing when I called on a Sunday lunchtime when I was served a pint of Adnam’s Ghost Ship by a friendly female member of staff. Also available were the strong Thornbridge Jaipur, Pedigree and Taylor’s Golden Best, the latter making a pleasant change from Landlord which catapulted the Keighley, West Yorkshire brewery into the conscience of beer lovers nationwide. The White Swan promotes itself as a “Tapas Bar and Restaurant” and the lounge I sat in was certainly busy with diners. There’s a lovely garden to enjoy at the rear when weather permits.

Near the A52, on Victoria Avenue, is the Queen’s Head, once run by former Rams’ centre forward John O’Hare. This is essentially an open plan, quintessential family dining pub with multiple TV screens and a very large garden.

Discerning beer drinkers haven’t been forgotten, however, and I was pleased to see Abbeydale Daily Bread, Doom Bar, 2 Frothblowers (West Midlands) ales and a local beer, Shiny Disco

I opted for a satisfying stout from Frothblowers as I reflected on the pub’s successful beer festival back in August.

Over in Stanton, by the renowned Erewash Valley Golf Club, is the modernised Seven Oaks Inn, Low’s Lane. Neighboroughing Stanton Ironworks was a major employer employing up to 7,000 at its height but, sadly, the last pipe was cast in 2007. Ilkeston born Robert Lindsay started his career here before finding fame as an actor. Several rooms have uniformly contemporary décor and pine is to the fore. This was another busy establishment, packed with diners although those seeking liquid sustenance hadn’t been forgotten with Hobgoblin Gold, Pedigree, Doom Bar and Taylor’s Landlord on draught. I tried the former which didn’t disappoint. Behind the pub is a patio and a marquee containing a games room, ideal for keeping children occupied.

In the middle of pretty Stanton

by Dale village is the Stanhope Arms, clearly an inn of some antiquity. Upon entering, the

low ceilinged, beamed local has been partially knocked through creating one room but retaining some intimacy, and seating includes cushioned, high-backed pews. The food offering has 1,2 and 3 course Sunday roasts and children’s portions are served at ground floor level and upstairs. A 1956 newspaper cutting describes Stanton Ironworks as “one of the most successful in Europe”. Dogs are welcome and much has been made of the outside areas which include a new split-level decking to the rear. The almost ubiquitous Doom Bar had a house beer for company – Stanhope Ale, and from Brighton, Laine’s Breaker

which I hadn’t encountered hitherto. The car park is across the road.

Turning off into Dale Road, the extended, end of terrace Chequers soon hoves into view where Sue and Ian Moon have been mine hosts for fully twenty years.

And they intend to be here for a while still.

internally and externally and the whole looks impressive now. This isn’t the first pub to have a heated outdoor area and in the current climate (pardon the pun) it’s most welcome. The most has been made of a big site with caravan and camping spaces available for hire. The split-level interior has a quartet of real ales including Draught Bass and Oakham Citra, contrasting beers suiting different palates but I happen to like both!

Continuing along Dale Road, turn right at the end onto Woodpecker Hill and then sharp left into Moor Lane, where the ivy clad Carpenters’ Arms awaits in historic Dale Abbey. Little remains of the 12thC Abbey except for a Chancel arch and masonry abutting an old cottage but this remains a fascinating settlement to explore. Grade 1 listed All Saints Church is extant and integral to it, once with direct doorway access, is the delicensed Blue Bell Inn. The Hollingworth family ran the Blue Bell before building the Carpenters’ Arms in 1880.

The Carpenters’ is on a huge parcel of land with ample area for alfresco imbibing in fair weather. Inside the Carpenters’, there’s a wood panelled lounge replete with frieze and banquette seating, the likes of which have all but disappeared. Also, there’s a cosy side lounge and a separate public bar. East Anglian beers, Adnam’s Broadside and Greene King Abbot share bar space with a brace from Marston’s of Burton on Trent - Pedigree and 61 Deep.

Themed food lunchtimes and evenings complete the picture.

We’ve come to the end of this particular perambulation, and we hope the Derbeian has shown why it’s worthwhile to visit this part of south east Derbyshire.

I have to say it is one of the best apartments we have ever stayed in, luxury doesn’t even come close. All the mod cons you could wish for my favourite was the 77in 4k flat-screen TV and we both loved the Jacuzzi bath not to mention the rain shower.

What happens to email, social media, and other online accounts when someone dies?

Most people only consider their material assets when it comes to making a Will. Houses, cars, savings, personal possessions, etc. are all high on the list of things to gift or assign should you pass away. But what happens to all our online assets and accounts, i.e. our ‘Digital Estate’?

This includes things like photos on our mobile phones, social media pages, and online accounts for a whole range of social media apps and websites. In most cases there may only be content in your Digital Estate, e.g. postings, emails, and pictures. But increasingly people have financial assets that are purely online such as betting and gambling accounts, paid for gaming apps, and cryptocurrencies e.g. Bitcoin.

So should we be including information on all of these accounts and assets in our Will?

If the answer is yes, then what information should we list?

There are really three essential things that everyone should think seriously about: 1. Should I be keeping a list of all online, digital and social media accounts? And where should I be keeping this list?

2. What do I want to happen to these accounts when I pass away?

3. Should I appoint a separate Executor to deal specifically with this part of my estate?

In answer to the first question then we recommend that everybody keeps an up-to-date and detailed list of their Digital Estate. This can be a simple list such as the name of the account, the website address, and possibly even your account name (i.e. your name as it appears to everyone, for example, email address, Facebook name or

Twitter handle). This is all effectively in the public domain anyway, so keeping a list is not a security issue.

At Else Solicitors we ask all our Wills & Probate clients if they would like to keep a list of their Digital Estate with their Will (and if necessary, in storage with us).

This will then help the executors manage both your traditional estate and your digital estate in the event of your death. Don’t forget that your Executors will need access to this list….so don’t keep the only copy behind a password on your computer that no one knows!

Which brings me to passwords!

You may think that it would be perfectly acceptable for a next of kin or executor of a Will to go into a mobile phone or online account for somebody who has passed away.

But at the moment this is illegal, and under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 it may be a criminal offence for someone else to use your password, even if you have died.

The other difficulty you will encounter is that it seems every website / social media site has a different procedure for registering and dealing with the death of a user. So you cannot rely on being able to take the same action every time. At the moment it is simply a case of contacting each company individually and finding out what those procedures are and following them.

As a result we do not recommend keeping your online passwords

in your Digital Estate list – although you may want to pass on the password which helps your Executors access your computer or phone. Even if your Executors were given all your passwords, legally they should still not access any account online directly. What they should do is contact the account or service provider and inform them of your death and any instructions you left in your Will.

You should also think about what you want to happen with those accounts after your death – are they to be closed and the contents deleted? Or the contents passed on as far as they can be?

Many social media pages can be memorialised after someone dies – would you want this to be done?

Unfortunately, this is an area where the law has still not caught up with technology and I have no doubt that important guidelines will be set as more and more cases are heard. In fact, a recent project completed by STEP (Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners) and Queen Mary University of London has identified the need for urgent reform to give families better access to the digital assets of deceased loved ones.

Making a Will and thinking about your death is never an easy thing to do, but in this digital world it is important to consider your Digital Estate just as much as any other asset you own. At Else Solicitors we encourage all our clients to think about their Digital Estate and provide a document template for them to complete and keep alongside their Will.

Alexander The Great - or some such all-powerful titan - allegedly wept when told there were no more worlds to conquer. I know how he felt.

I’ve just scaled the summit and tested probably the best car in it’s class.

In the great pantheon of motoring marvels one car now supersedes the competition in its radiant affirmation of sublime achievement.

There are no more peaks to conquer, no more rivers to cross, no more Topless Towers in Troy to burn. The new Audi Q5 Sportback puts paid to aspiration. Own one of these and you know you have chosen the best. In my opinion, offerings from the likes of Peugeot, Citroen, Jeep and Vauxhall are mere shadows when compared to one of these. ”Cor blimey guv’nor!” exclaimed the gentleman manning the gate at the Six Counties Show as he directed me to the car park. “I’d give a cartload of jellied eels for one of those.”

I laughed, tickled by his colourful patter and followed his directions across rough terrain and wet grass where other vehicles were struggling for traction.

The 4wd with several drive modes made light work of the challenging surfaces.

Everywhere eyes were glued to the Q5: eyes tinged, one fancies, with covetousness - for who wouldn’t want to swap places with yours truly.

I parked, shut off the 265PS 4 cylinder petrol engine and... well, simply exhaled a long sigh of contentment. Had I succumbed to the sheer comfort of the all-embracing luxury of the irresistible

interior I might have nodded off. It occured to me that only in dreams could one hope to surpass the Q5 Sportback experience.

It had all kicked off early that morning at my Manor House. I’d just despatched the neighbourhood cockerell with a well-aimed weekold croissant when my manservant burst into the breakfast room.

“The car’s arrived.”

“Car?” I replied.

“Car indeed Squire. In my opinion once you clap eyes on it’s significant form you’ll leave your fried bacon in the pan and take to the highway with adventure in your soul.”

“You don’t say. This car I must see.”

And see I did. Picture if you will a dashingly styled SUV. Not a trace of vulgarity, no hint of crowd pleasing

The coupes rear end is as accommodating as mine host at the Wheatsheaf. It serves you with a smile and an open palm. I checked the boot first to make sure I could carry all the rubbish to the tip - no

problem there - dashed back inside to grab a few things and I was ready to go. But where to?

“You could try The Six Counties Show” suggested my lackey.

“Good call. Want to come with me?”

“No. I’ve got to polish the brasses.”

So I took to the road like the free spirit that I am. What a drive! The Sportback comes fully loaded with all the best a modern car can provide.

There’s the Quattro all wheel drive system of course and the 7 speed S Tronic dual clutch auto box. You’d expect nothing less. And there’s so much value-added technology that humble brains like mine simply pay obeisance.

There’s a drivetrain mode for every eventuality and driving along in on-road mode the Sportback simply defies expectations.

One gets blown away by the irresistible magnificence of combined performance and sophistication. Does it go like the wind? Well, when was the last time you saw the wind weep? Does it hold the road?

Are you kidding? It holds the road to ransom. It’s Dick Turpin and Black Bess together. It stands, delivers and gallops away up to near 150mph yet I averaged between 37mpg and 40 mpg. And it’s incomparably more comfortable than any saddle or stagecoach. Grab the Sportback by the reins and you won’t want to let go: it’s so addictive.

So there I was at the Six Counties Show following a long drive and now relaxing in the cosseting seating, reluctant to exchange well sprung upholstery for springy turf. I climbed out and headed for the main arena. It was impossible not to think that I was leaving the main event behind.

Polestar 2 I went to the fortune teller at our socially distanced country fayre and she told me that the future looked bright.

“Even for me?” I asked.

Her eyes glittered. Was it malevolence or was it sudden indigestion?

“Even for you” she affirmed in a whisper.

When I stepped out of the tent into the driving rain I saw the ploughing teams were hard at it on the muddy field beyond. Antique ploughing contraptions were being deployed energetically behind teams of SUFFOLK PUNCH horses by men in rolled up sleeves and flat caps. Cries of encouragement pierced the curtain of rain.

I looked heavenwards.

Had it not been overcast, had it been night and not day I might have seen the constellation familiarly, and in the circumstances coincidentally, known as The Plough (Ursa Major), riding high in the heavens, pointing the way, courtesy of the alignment of two of its stars, MERAK and TUBHE, towards Polaris the POLE STAR. Adjusting my gaze I saw in the paddock car park, a vehicle that gleamed brightly despite the rain. A radiant pointer no less to a cleaner motoring tomorrow. My own personal Polestar. It was time to leave yesterday’s pageant behind and swap a bygone era for a futuristic flourish of

high-tech electric wizardry.

I can’t say I felt sorry.

From ‘The get go’ as our American cousins would say, the Polestar brand is blazing a trail towards an emissions free tomorrow.

Polestar is already a byword for brilliant innovation in battery-powered betterment of the environment. Looking sleek and stylish in its space age splendour, it seemed sacrilegious to flip open the boot in order to deposit therein my CAMERONIAN GREEN WELLIES which were mud bespattered from country fayre fun. Bucolic footwear was exchanged for sustainable driving slipons and I slipped behind the wheel in expectation of sweet and smooth serenity.

Suddenly there came a tap on my window. I lowered it. A bedraggled-looking fortune teller wore an anxious expression that would resist obliteration by even a month’s worth of driving rain.

“Please give me a lift home” she implored. “I have left the slow cooker on a high setting and my husband Piers is using the 4x4 in the tugof-war contest so I have no wheels.

“Hop in” I cried. “The wheel of fortune has turned in your favour. Electric alacrity shall

deliver you home quicker than you can say curried canapes” Madame Osiris jumped in and off we went. The only sound, a splashy noise as electric powered tenacious tyres swept through soaked earth - accompanied by a gasp of surprise from the lips of the Priestess of Perception.

“I can’t hear the engine” she said.

“Nor can you tell the future.

I bet you never anticipated a ride in a £49,900 Polestar 2 which has Volvo XC40 underpinnings, is a brand jointly owned by Volvo and Chinese Geely and is built in China.”

She replied mysteriously.

The beautifully appointed interior, with all adjuncts to comfort and control, directed electrically from the large touchscreen, made for an ethereal experience. Mid range acceleration was such that inexperienced or slow witted drivers could find themselves overwhelmed!

It occured to me that just as roads go up and down, so do fortunes. Surely, I argued to myself that the downside of the climate emergency may be compensated in some way by the positive virtues of a Polestar. Studies show that the overall carbon footprint

of electric cars remains lower than the footprints registered by petrol and diesel cars. You don’t need Madame Osiris’s crystal ball to guess which way the wind is blowing.

At the moment some electric cars are beyond the financial reach of many. But as they say, if you don’t reach for the stars you won’t get to harvest cheese from the moon.

As we reached the outskirts of the city the sun broke through in cliched extravagance. Leaves sparkled and hedgerows glittered. I sensed a change of mood in my passenger. Madame Osiris’s anxiety had given way to a mood of serene optimism. What if her stew

was spoiled? In the great scheme of things it mattered not. What did matter was my growing conviction that the Polestar 2 represents the metamorphosis of motoring into something beneficial to well being. For the driver the exquisitely refined package is reward enough.

But there’s more to it. This car - like the sun - seems to radiate benevolence. It conveys an impression of glissading across surfaces with terpsichorean grace.

The music in my ears was the result not of engine noise but in some strange way an apprehension of the music of the spheres. Was this driving or dreaming?

My journey into care with Right at Home Derby After caring for my grandparents, I noticed the dramatic change I could influence in their lives, taking them to hospital appointments, helping around the house and simply offering company managed to improve their overall wellbeing; this set me on a path to pursue a career in professional healthcare, but I did not know which company to choose. I searched for care companies in Derbyshire on my computer and read their reviews.

Many reviews for award winning care provider Right at Home Derby recommended them as a caring provider, who deliver a person-centred approach to care, these reviews and recommendations outweighed all the other domiciliary care providers. thus, I visited their website to take a closer look at the career opportunities they had on offer.

The next day Charlotte called introduced herself as the recruiter, and we had an informal chat for around 5–10-minutes, talking about me, and what I was looking for working within care. She continued to say, looking at the choices you make in your answers gives us an indication of your values, ethics, and scope to cope; explaining that she is not looking for specific answers, just mine (the candidate) and if successful they should mirror the values we work to, and that I should not worry, everyone that works for Right at Home has gone through the same process.

So, the day of the interview came, and Charlotte met at the Derby office with a smile and the offer of a drink. After she took my temperature, she politely asked me to use the hand sanitiser provided (Standard COVID practice for anyone entering the office). We spoke for 45 minutes in private, covering subjects from my work background, motivation to work in care, and my availability during the week and at weekends. During the interview we also spoke about the company values and their person-centred approach to care, supporting the wellbeing, independence, wishes and needs of their clients. Right at Home’s approach to their clients sounded wonderful, just the sort of care company I would love to work for. One example of their approach to care, is having hour long calls, where they can take their time to get to know the clients they care for. These long calls can and have proved to improve a client’s wellbeing and independence. I found this very refreshing, putting their clients in the centre of all that they do. Other care companies only do 10–15-minute calls, which I strongly believe cannot have the same positive impact.

The

Derbeian | Winter 2021/22 As the interview was coming to a natural end, Charlotte explained that all the employees have an in date enhanced DBS (Disclosure Barring Service), for working with vulnerable adults in the community. Charlotte would send this link to me which I would need to complete, because she then told me that I had all the qualities that could make a great care giver, and that my interview had been successful.

To end the interview, Charlotte offered me a couple of dates in the coming month, for me to attend Right at Homes four-day induction training package. All care and office staff go through the same training package, delivered in the Derby office

by Derek -the companies experienced Training Manager. I would also need two references, one professional, and one character. Without these, I could not go into care as it is company policy that all employees have full background checks before they go into a client’s home to deliver care. We agreed on a date for my induction, and I left the office with a spring in my step, it was so nice to find a care company that actually cares for its clients.

I returned to the Derby office on the morning of my induction, where again-on entry to the office-I had my temperature taken, and hands sanitised. Derek then met me, he led me down to the training end of the office, invited me to take a seat, and explained I was the first one there and that we were waiting for other candidates to join us.

When the other candidates arrived, Derek managed all our expectations for the next four days, explaining what we would

be doing. Days one and two would be going through the theory and incorporating practical elements of the “fifteen standards of the Care Certificate.” This certificate is recognised by the Care Quality Commission, those who achieve it are certified as a professional domiciliary care giver.

Derek went on to say that over days three and four, we would be covering: the theory, doing practical scenarios in medication administration to clients, basic life support, safe moving and handling techniques using various pieces of equipment, that we are likely to use in the community.

During the 4-day course Derek also guided us all through how to care for clients with differing diagnosis, behaviours including an in-depth teach on dementia care and infection prevention and control. We also covered how to give personal care to a client whilst maintaining their privacy and dignity. We also covered health and safety food hygiene, and Right at Homes values of Trust, Quality, Compassion and Respect in detail. We also covered the codes of conduct we would be following out in the community. All this training and understanding we gain, would prepare us for making a difference every day for our clients.

I found the induction training informative, eye opening, and delivered professionally, at a pace that all of us on the course could work to. It had been a long time since I was at school learning, Derek did understand this and reassured me that through his years of experience teaching candidates with varied

experience, he recognised that with my progress so far, I would make a great care giver.

I have to say that both Charlotte and Derek did more than enough for me, managing my expectations and helping me through the process. They are both enthusiastic, professional, and helpful - they embody the exacting standards of Right at Home. It is clear to see through their diligent work in providing care givers with the right values and expertise, that the welcoming staff at Right at Home are both kind and compassionate. From Charlotte’s hello to Derek’s training, the process up to this point in my journey into care had been exemplary.

After successfully completing my induction training and having my care givers bag issued to me, full of the things I would need in care (including my professional development file), it was time for me to embark on my first shadow shifts.

Right at Home has a policy of shadowing new care givers into a client’s home, regardless of the care givers experience - I had shadow shifts for the first week I went into providing care. These shadow visits were scheduled for me during my available hours I gave to Charlotte at my interview. One of Derby’s Care Co-Ordinators would select which clients I would meet that matched with my personality and availability, so there was no wasting time, or interruption to my day-to-day life.

By giving clients regular and familiar faces, we can often spot any problems or issues early, which helps keep our clients fit and healthy, living their own home.

I really appreciate the time I get with all my clients, because other care companies only allocate 15-minute call times, not long enough to get any part of the job done properly. Here at Right at Home, our minimum call time is one hour, and this gives me time to perform my duties thoroughly, and still have time to talk to my client and give them much needed companionship; neither me nor the client feels rushed as we have a nice chat.

home - I wait outside, so I do not go into the call without first being introduced to the client by the friendly face of the experienced caregiver. My first activity was to get the client out of bed and give her the choice of what she would like to wear that day. Then we all made our way to the kitchen so the client could choose her breakfast, taking her dietary requirements into account. I complete my evidence paperwork for me to complete the care certificate within my probation period. During my first six weeks, I also had to complete eight online learning modules on a cloudbased system - Derek enrolled me onto this system and explained how it works.

All our actions and activities we do during client care calls are typed in the communications log by the care giver who has done the activity. This is all done on an application on my phone which means no more lengthy paperwork to fill in. Completing this on an app, (downloaded and walked through various aspects of it whilst I was on my induction aided by Derek), means I have more time to spend with the Client, and the office receive immediate notification of what happens on every call. We keep a digital communications log for

every Client and every visit on our industry leading technology, which also provides full transparency and communication with the client and their family members all provided in real time to ensure they are kept fully involved.

My next Client was a two-hour partial double up call, meaning that there are two care givers attending to the one Client, (I was number three as I was still shadowing). Our client is a gentleman with Multiple Sclerosis.

We had provided palliative care for a family member of his in the past. I met my colleagues outside again, as I had done before at my first Client’s house. This was my first call using a hoist in the community to get him out of bed and assist him with toileting and showering. My role was to observe how this is done, in a way that will always maintain the client’s privacy and dignity. They then helped him to dress and hoisted him into his wheelchair.

It was then time for one of the care givers to depart. I have an hour left in the call, to prepare a meal and conduct light housekeeping including a quick dust and vacuum. I put a clothes wash on for him and the next carer will empty it on their visit later that day.

After the call ends, it is time for a break until my final Client of the day. This Client chose Right at Home for its companionship services, so on this occasion, it involves me taking her out to a local garden centre to look for plants and have a snack in the café there afterwards. My client likes that we can support her to continue doing activities that she enjoys, and the trips out are great for both her mental and physical health, it also improves her wellbeing, as she likes to keep active.

My shift finishes at 2.00pm, so I head home ready for the kids getting back from school.

My career in care gives me is a sense of satisfaction, that I am helping someone in need in the community. No other job has been more rewarding for me than providing care. I like to think that Right at Home provides their exacting standards of care the right way, providing a level of safe and trusted care, the same as you would care for one of your own family members.

Right at Home has really supported me in my career as a carer. I am now studying for my Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care, and I hope to be promoted to the position of Senior Carer in the not-so-distant future.

What is Inheritance Tax (IHT)?

Inheritance Tax is a tax paid by a person who inherits money or property from a person who has died.

How much would I pay?

When you die Inheritance Tax is applied to your estate.

The first £325,000 is covered by your “Nil Rate Band”. This effectively means that it is taxed at 0%. Everything above the “Nil Rate Band” is taxed at 40%.

The Fearn Family of Allestree My connection with the Fearn family of Allestree, Derby came about in 1909, when my grandfather Arthur Thurman (born in 1883) married Alice Fearn at St. Matthew’s Church Darley Abbey, having had their wedding banns read at St. Edmund’s Church, Allestree.

Alice was the daughter of Leonard and Sarah Fearn, my great grandparents. The family name Fearn appeared in Allestree BMD records from 1790 when George Fearn and Elizabeth (nee Gregory) baptized George Fearn, the first of their eight children at St. Edmund’s Church Allestree.

Perhaps George Fearn born in 1790, died in childhood as another George was baptised in 1797. It was a common practice in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to name another child after a deceased sibling.

George Fearn senior was born in 1765 and he married Sarah Gregory at Quarndon in 1785, he came from Cromford or Wirkswirth in Derbyshire. Lydia Gregory married William Buxton (born in 1778) at Allestree on 21st November, 1799.

The three interconnected families by marriage are not the oldest family names found in St. Edmund’s Allestree, BM D records. The name Fletcher can be found at Allestree since at least 1538 and who knows their timeline could extend back before then?

I suspect or have a haunch that the Buxton’s, Fearn’s and Gregory’s appeared in Allestree around the time, the following advertisement featured in The Derby Mercury in 1787: The three families were likely some of the first of Darley Mill’s workers, who were provided with housing in Allestree in the early days, beginning in the 1780s. I found James Gregory of Allestree, a “Cotton-mill hand” on the 1861 census.

The Fearn Family of Allestree The Darley Abbey mill workers cottages were built in phases stating with part of Darley Street, followed by Hill Square and The Flat Square, New Road, Brick Row, The Four Houses, Lavender Row and then Mile Ash Lane. So as each phase finished, housing mill workers at Allestree reduced, although a few families continued living in Allestree. The Evans family did not own Darley Village when the mill was built, Robert Holden was Lord of the Manor and Allestree Hall was bought

by Evans circa 1805. So the Evans y didn’t own Allestree either when they established Darley Mill.

Some of the Allestree housing was no doubt transferred to those in service at Allestree Hall and for workers of the Evanses Allestree tenant farmers.

The 1851, 1861 and 1871 census shows the Buxton’s were builders and John Buxton was also a publican at the Red Cow Inn Allestree.

The following Derby Mercury advertisements shows the tools of their trade being sold off following the death of John Buxton in 1872 and again the same items being sold again

by Mr. Smith who decided to move away. It is interesting that the brewing and running of an inn seems like an incidental business compared to the building trade and livestock.

Livestock Buxton’s kept wasn’t mentioned in the censuses.

I surmise that Samuel Fearn bought the Red Cow Inn from Mr. Smith in March, 1875.

I can’t be certain that the new publican at the Red Cow Inn was the same one born in 1807. It is possible but Samuel Fearn publican held a license for the Red Cow from 1875 to 1897, meaning he was 90 when he retired. So

Samuel the publican may have been from the next generation of Allestree Fearn’s. Samuel Fearn the publican was also a “horse-breaker” (seen in trade directories). There were two sides to Samuel; there was a respectable Samuel who attended Oddfellows meetings at the Joiners Arms, Quarndon. Samuel Fearn and H. Buxton were members of The Royal Scarsdale Lodge of The Grand Order of Oddfellows. Seen in Derby Mercury, February 20, 1889. There was another side to Samuel and he was frequently “in the soup” but he was a survivor.

Samuel Fearn had a very colourful twenty-two years at the Red Cow Inn. This included being temporally blacklisted by Derby Brewster Sessions for allowing drunkenness on the premises and being drunk serving behind the bar. The following report by the Derby Mercury is one of many citing that Samuel was convicted by the courts or temporally blacklisted by Derby Brewster Sessions.

There is a typo in the report and it should say Red Cow, Allestree and not Dun Cow. It is interesting to see the name Benjamin Gregory and that he was also convicted whilst he was publican of the Cock Inn, Muggington.

Winter 2021/22

In 1877, he was called to explain himself at the inquest held the National-schoolroom, Allestree of his wife, Mary Beneditta Fearn.

Rumors spread that Samuel murdered his wife. Witnesses at the inquest confirmed that Samuel treated her kindly and was tolerant of her when she had too much to drink. The father of the deceased accused Samuel of being violent towards Mary but his testament was unreliable. It transpired that Mary suffered from fits and Samuel and his mother had to hold her down to stop her from injuring herself and this accounted for bruises to her forearms. Other witnesses stated that Mary had assaulted Samuel, once with a dirty beer slops cloth and he just took it. Also, Samuel’s Mother lived with them at the Red Cow and she’d been seen fighting with Mary Beniditta, many times.

There was no question of Samuel being charged with the death of his wife aged 27 years, so she was born in 1850, making it unlikely she was married to a man 43 years older.

I think there was never a dull moment at the Red Cow Inn, when Samuel pulled the pints.

After Samuel Fearn’s stint as the landlord of the Red Cow Inn, came Leonard Fearn (born 1857) and Leonard was my great grandfather.

I found no auction notices in the press for the sale of the Red Cow in 1877, so I surmise Leonard and Samuel came to an arrangement privately to transfer the ownership.

Previously Leonard was a gamekeeper at Allestree Hall, working at first for Sir William Evans and then for the Gisborne’s. There is a slight touch of irony with Allestree appointing a Fearn gamekeeper as in December 1826, the London Chronicle and the Manchester Guardian reported that “Walter Fern” of Allestree with Benjamin Green was conveyed to the house of correction in Derby for three months for the offence of “using snares for the destruction of game”.

This account in the Mercury described a brutal incident when Leonard and a policeman were confronted by a gang of men armed with sticks. Several poachers ended up in a hedge bottom with a blooded head.

My grandfather, Arthur Thurman had an Oak walking stick cum-cudgel that belonged to Leonard. My granddad Arthur gave it to me when I was a lad but my Mum made me give it back, as it was riddled with woodworm.

Authors Notes: I struggle to understand why poachers of rabbits were so harshly treated because rabbits cause terrible damage and losses to farmer’s crops. Gamekeepers were at risk from serious assaults when they prevented men from taking game for the

In 1895, there was a terrible accident and Leonard doubled-up as a beater at a pheasant-shoot at the hall when Lionel Gisborne shot the pheasant that Leonard scared out of a hedge and Leonard was shot in the head, unseen by Mr. Gisborne on the other side of the hedge.

figure in this old photo (pun is intended and should be should be ungainly).

I suspect that Mr. Gisborne was accident prone as detailed in this old local newspaper report: Leonard Fearn was 38 years old when he was blinded and due to the munificence, of Mr. Gisborne he had the means to pull pints behind the bar of the Red Cow Inn, if not the means to see when the pint pots were properly filled. I know only a little about Leonard’s time at the

Red Cow Inn, Allestree. The little bit I gleaned was when eavesdropping on a conversation between my grandfather Arthur Thurman, my father, Harry Thurman and my two Thurman uncles, Arthur and Reg. When they saw (?)

I was interested; they shut up and changed the subject. They seemed to say that Leonard didn’t have the business acumen needed to run the Red Cow and that Leonard’s weakness that cost him dearly was betting at the Allestree Plate and Derby races. I heard that he was often collected by fair-weather friends and he took a purse of gold sovereigns and would ride to the races on his pony and trap. Who was it that said “Gambling is a Mugs Game;” Leonard rarely won and in the longer term he lost most of his money.

This notice in the Derby Daily Telegraph 18th December, 1901 confirms my worst fears for Leonard: He died in 1903 and his burial was at St. Edmunds Allestree 7th March, 1903. There was no public announcement in Newspapers of his death and his age was 46 years. I think my great grandmother, Sarah Fearn ended up back in service at Allestree Hall.

Sara Fearn was “Mighty” and a “Winner” when she was a septuagenarian according to the

Derby Daily Telegraph in 1933. If only she had asserted herself at the Red Cow and kept a better grip on Leonard, then she may have found herself in a more comfortable position later instead of a struggling widow. Sarah had the unusual and probably unique experience of living at both Allestree old pubs; The Red Cow as the Leonard’s publican’s wife and after Cudgel-Stick Leonard died, she lived in a cottage that was a row of cottages that was formally the New Inn. It’s possible that she and Leonard also lived there when he was the gamekeeper at Allestree Hall. When the end of feudalism came to Allestree and Allestree Hall and the estate was passed to the County Council, they decided to widen Duffield Road opposite the park gates (known as Allestree Corner) and the row of cottages, converted from the former New Inn were demolished in 1933.

The newspaper article reported that she would not move until she got what she wanted?

I think that something was a not an insubstantial amount of money for those times, as Sarah’s daughter, Alice Thurman (nee Fearn) left my grandfather Arthur Thurman a bit more than couple of hundred pounds in 1952 and I can’t imagine where else the money came from.

Hi, I’m Paula from ‘Alterations by Paula J Fordi’. I am a professional seamstress, offering a complete range of clothing repair and alteration services and specialising in wedding, bridesmaids, evening and prom dresses.

I worked for many years as a manager of a fabric store in the US and was even featured on TV doing a bridal veil tutorial! I also worked with an interior designer, making 12ft curtains and pelmets for famous basketball players and an 18ft spider that hung over the dance floor at a Halloween party! From the sublime to the ridiculous, I’ve done it all.

Whilst in America I married and had two children, moving back to England fifteen

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax If you are self employed or have rental properties, then you need to read this!

The government have announced the next stage of its agenda of “Making Tax Digital” with the introduction of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax being introduced for sole traders and landlords from April 2024, partnerships will join the scheme from April 2025.

This is the biggest change to Income Tax since the introduction of self assessment over 20 years ago.

What is MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment?

(MTD for ITSA) Under the requirements of MTD for ITSA, individuals who are subject to income tax on the profit from their trade, profession, vocation or property business will be required to keep their accounting records electronically.

This means either using approved software or a spreadsheet and therefore no manual records. The taxpayers will need to file a quarterly return with HMRC with details of their income and expenditure together with

any other information that HMRC specifies. A final end of period statement will then be submitted after the year end to complete the individuals’ tax return.

Although the frequency of reporting information is to change, the timing of tax payments will not. The current system of payments on account on 31 January and 31 July and a balancing payment on 31 January after the tax year will remain in place.

Timetable and Exemptions In order to be within the scope, the individual must have total business or property income above £10,000 per year.

This threshold of £10,000 applies to gross income or turnover, not profit and we understand that it applies to the total gross income where the individual has more than one trade or property business. E.g. an individual has £7,000 of rental income and £8,000 of sales from a sole trader they will exceed the £10,000 limit and be in the scope of MTD for ITSA. There are exclusions similar to those for VAT and in the main relate to age, disability, remoteness of location and are often referred to as a “digital exclusion”.

Winter 2021/22

If your business has already qualified for the exemption from MTD for VAT, they will also be exempt from MTD for ITSA.

Quarterly updates All business within MTD for ITSA will have to provide quarterly updates of their income and expenses for the following periods:Quarter to 5 July, 5 October, 5 January and 5 April or Quarter to 30 June, 30 September, 31 December and 31 March.

You will have a month to file the return.

There is no need to make tax or accounting adjustments to the information provided in quarterly updates.

End of period Statement (EOPS) The EOPS performs a similar role to that of your current self assessment tax return and will include the required tax and accounting adjustment and will finalise the tax position of the business.

The filing deadline for the EOPS will be the normal self-assessment deadline of 31 January following the relevant tax year.

Practical points If you are not already using software or spreadsheets you will need to change to these methods unless you can claim and exemption. It is important that you action this as soon as possible in order that you are familiar with the software and requirement of the new legislation.

reforms to the basis period rules will also take place from April 2024. This means that if you do not have a 31March or 5 April year end then your profit going forward will be calculated on the financial year ending 31 March or 5 April.

If you have tax underpaid, it can be collected via a reduction in your code number if it is less than £3,000. In order for this to be done you have to have requested this by 31 December and submitted your self assessment income tax return.

Darley Abbey VILLAGE STORES

If you go down to Darley Park today you are sure of a big surprise.

Standing proudly is Darley Abbey Village Stores which as served the village for many years, taken over

by Sarah and John in March 2016 the same year the Derbeian was launched. I have to say the couple have made some major changes to the store over the years but still maintaining a friendly homely atmosphere.

When you do visit the store look out for the array of artisan items

including Cider and craft beer, and not forgetting freshly ground coffee and yummy hot chocolate on a cold Winters day.

Borrowbrook Home Link Who are we?

We are a charity dedicated to helping older people living in Ockbrook and Borrowash live independent lives and stay connected to their community.

Borrowbrook was established in 2002 after a study group identified issues such as loneliness, isolation, lack of selfesteem and an inability for older adults to remain independent in their own homes. We have worked very hard to become a hub for our seniors and were awarded the prestigious Queens Award for Voluntary Service.

Though we are a small charity, we offer a wide range of activities and services to our members.

It’s an established fact, we’re a nation of pet lovers. The 2021 PAWS report from pet charity PDSA showed that 51% of UK adults own one or more pets.

We gladly invest our time, money and emotions to the welfare of our beloved animal companions. Puppy and kitten sales soared during the pandemic, as families and individuals sought for the companionship, physical and emotional well-being pets can bring to us.

However, sadly, pet bereavement charities also report a rise in calls from those experiencing the heartache after the loss of a beloved family pet. In reality, most pet owners will outlive their pets. It’s an uncomfortable fact that often only becomes apparent on the death of a pet. It’s just not something we tend to plan for.

Whether it’s sudden, or follows an illness, or old age-related, many people just don’t know what to do when such a devastating loss occurs. In the past many pets were buried in the garden, but pet owners are increasingly choosing individual cremation of their beloved companions, with return of their pet’s ashes providing a permanent memorial of the happy life and times spent together.

Quite rightly, uppermost in a pet owners mind is ensuring their beloved companion is treated with kindness, respect and dignity on their last journey, so deciding who will take care of a cremation is an important choice.

Options are usually between your vet making the arrangements, or for the owner to speak with a local independent pet cremation service.

Most vets will provide this service via a commercial pet cremation provider operating from a regional base, where your pet will be collected from the vet with other pets, before being given an individual cremation.

The ashes are usually either returned by post, or back to the vet for collection by the owner, often after a week or two.

Independent pet cremation services tend to be more local, where your pet is either collected individually, or brought by the owner directly to the crematorium. The service is often more personal, emotionally supportive and tailored to your own requests. After an individual cremation, your pet’s ashes are returned to you personally, often the following day.

Theatre Royal 9–11 Bold Lane

18th century Britain saw an explosion in the popularity of theatre. The types of entertainment, audience figures and the numbers and size of theatres all increased dramatically during this period. At the beginning of the century London had just two theatres allowed by Royal Patent to perform spoken-word drama, and very few theatres existed in the provinces.

However, a burgeoning middle-class had disposable income and were hungry for entertainment. Producers were keen to replicate the success of the London theatres for themselves, and there was a ready supply of travelling theatre companies who could provide performances of the latest plays. Soon ‘Theatres Royal’ were appearing up and down the land, and Derby was no different.

When an old malthouse in Bold Lane went up for sale, one James Augustus Whitely showed interest and purchased the Malt House for £170, together with the adjoining

cottages for £50. Whitely wasted no time converting the properties to use as a theatre.

When it opened in 1773 the new building’s aesthetics provoked a mixed reaction from the public; Hutton remarked it was convenient and, in his opinion, ‘more striking than the street in which it stands.’

Pilkington’s history described it as ‘small but well contrived’ and the Derby Mercury of July 23 1773 noted ‘We hear that a new elegant theatre is to be opened at our races, by Mr Whiteley’s Company of Comedians, who are well known to be the best Performers anywhere out of the Metropolis.’

However, there were fears about damp, and also protest from the Church of the adverse effect of such an establishment on the moral health of the townspeople.

As Simpson writes in his Notes Towards a History of Derby (1826), ’Happy will it be when these nurseries of vice and immorality no longer exist.’

The first performance held as the theatre was Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer. The height of the theatre’s popularity came in the first half of the 18th century socialites in Derby by G.M. Woodward. nineteenth century.

Widely varied types of performance were on During these years performances were offer, including pantomimes such as Don Juan regularly taking place, always popular and notably the performance of M. Gouffe amongst the town’s social elite and always the ‘Monkey Man’, Monday 14th May 1827; had a full billing.

Theatre Royal of their era appeared here in Hunchback, and the theatre in these times was popular and fashionably attended.

It was, as Glover (1843) reports, ’With a very good company of performers who were frequently aided by the most popular actors and actresses of the London stage, attended here at regular seasons of which the principal consisted of six weeks from the Friday after Easter day; and a short period at the races.’

Perhaps a victim of its own success, opinion of the building began to change, being described in White’s 1857 Directory as ‘a small brick building inconveniently sited and quite inadequate for the proper representation of the drama and for the requirements of today.’

Concerns over drunkenness and immorality also continued, and the theatre finally closed in 1864.

Subsequently sold to George Wilkins, the building was A 1914 plan detailing the building in use as the Gospel Hall. transformed into a an audience member commented that it was Gospel Hall. This Unsectarian mission site the ‘Most wonderful and clever impersonators was opened in 1865 with Wilkins himself and imitators of “monkey tricks’’ on record, leading the mission for 21 years. 9–11 Bold Lane of the poorest areas of Derby. Free breakfasts were still served in the Edwardian era with Henry Truscott being one of its many beneficiaries.

Post-war, the building was bought by Derbyshire County Council, initially housing the planning department in the building, and later transferring the use to library purposes for a few years before this service was transferred to the County Council HQ at Matlock. Subsequently the site was readapted to provide additional capacity for the Magistrates Court, before being sold into

private ownership once again in 2004 and conversion to restaurant use.

What must have originally been a rather pleasing frontage has been marred by various alterations over time, with the three street-level arches losing their integrity to a revised frontage and the upper storey windows being enlarged. The site symbolises the evolution of Derby through Industrialisation and the 20th Century, ‘Malt house, theatre, gospel hall, and Ministry offices a cycle of transformations that must be unique, yet they epitomise rather well the changing character of Derby during the last 250 years.’

Last month saw the 21st anniversary celebration for the charity where staff and supporters of the charity got together to celebrate the fantastic work carried out.

The main focus of the event was the inspirational people associated with the organisation and its work.

Harriet Webster – Head of Retail said ‘The ability to promote from within is one of the best things about our charity.

Many of our Managers started as volunteers and have worked their way up! It directly supports our aims of investing in people and offering support and guidance where we can.’

The Lighthouse shops range from small boutiques to larger format stores in Hucknall and Hatton. There’s also an Emporium in Riddings near Alfreton. To help with stock distribution the charity has also recently opened a Donation and Distribution Hub on Alfreton High street!

WW2 Evacuees In Allestree, Darley Abbey & Derby

Even months before Britain declared war on Germany on 3rd. September 1939, evacuees were dispatched to Southern England and Wales and some arrangements were made to send evacuees to America and the colonies.

When the prospect of war with Germany was looking inevitable In February 1939, the Home Office sent a circular to local councils in Britain informing councils to prepare for the billeting of evacuees in their communities.

The Darley Abbey Parish Council held a meeting on the 9th February, 1939 in the Schoolroom to discuss the circular and decided that more information was wanted in order to act upon it.

The Clerk was instructed to write to the County Council and point out that the proximity of Darley Abbey was “so close to Derby, making it hardly a suitable place for evacuees.”

We know that evacuees were in Darley Abbey in 1942 and a few are mentioned below.: The Rev. John Price was the vicar from 1936 – 1946 and he is on the front row (seated on chairs) wearing a white cassock and a black vestment.

Sadly his son died tragically in 1938, when a seaplane he was piloting ran into heavy mist and crashed. Here in 1942, he is pictured with St. Matthews Church Choir and the boy on the same row, 2nd on our right, was P. Thomson who was an evacuee.

Young Peter Thompson, identified in the photo above, was billeted on West Row along with a lad named Jim Martin.

Another evacuee was Harvey Singleton; he appears to have been ‘a bit boisterous’, He was the only person known to do at least 3 somersaults when going over the green banister rail outside Miss Roberts area, to the ground floor outside Mrs. Barnes room at the old school on Brick Row. Thankfully, no injuries whatsoever were recorded for this incident, however, there would undoubtedly have been ‘repercussions’; perhaps even the dreaded call to the Headmaster’s room!”

Miss Barnes, the Deputy Head, was extremely strict and ‘handy with a ruler’, her classes covered ages 7 to 9, and Miss Roberts – covered ages 9 to 11. They were two of the four teachers.

The other two were, Miss Webb – ages 5 to 7, and Mr. Gamble the Head, a man to be feared by all accounts, – ages 11+.

Young Peter and Jim lived with the Palins in a house next to Bonshaw’s little shop. Mr. Palin, apparently, was the leader of the famous 1917 strike at the mill. He worked for Johnny Peacock the Mill owner as an odd job man. It is probable that Harvey Singleton lived with the Palin’s too, as they enjoyed young company. As for the boys ‘boisterousness’ or being naughty’, as some were heard to say, separation

from one’s parents must have been pretty traumatic, particularly in wartime!”

When the Doodlebugs started to land on London on 13th June 1944 another wave of evacuees were put on trains to the North and Midlands, including Derby. Many of the local Derby newspaper reports about evacuees are from 1944 onwards.

Although there are some local newspaper reports, I found little information, photos and the names of evacuees who stayed in Darley and Allestree, despite more than 100 evacuees being billeted to Allestree.

The following is a little about what I know so far and I hope with The Derbeian’s readers feedback, that we could add to this story in a later publication?

Children accompanied by parents had arrangements made to be billeted in institutional buildings and sometimes in an empty house. The billeting officers worked closely with the local and regional councils and these councils could use “statutory powers” to commandeer unoccupied homes: also, to make homeowners open their doors or move out of their home.

WW2 Evacuees and George was Chairman of Belper Rural District Council until 1955.

After arriving in Derby on trains or buses the evacuees were taken to a reception center and their details recorded. Then village billeting officers accompanied occupiers of homes to meet the evacuees. Home occupiers often picked unaccompanied children on the basis of whether they liked the look of them, their potential to be useful in the home or farm and ability to share the chores. There are heart breaking stories told by former evacuees in old newsreels of being the last ones to be selected by the family heads. Homeowners received an allowance of 10s a week for a child’s upkeep and 8s 6d for a second child.

Nellie and George Stevens worked for the Walter Evans Estate in Darley Abbey between 1921 to 1931; Nellie was Estate Agent and George was a carpenter and joiner, responsible for the maintenance of the mill cottages.

In Allestree, a bungalow was commandeered from a homeowner who was reluctant to allow evacuees to occupy it for two sisters with five children. Also, part of the Allestree Royal British Legion clubhouse was commandeered for two mothers with young children to be temporarily billeted.

My great aunt Nellie Stevens (nee’ Thurman) was the Chairwoman of the Billeting Tribunal and her husband, George Stevens was the Billeting Officer in Darley Abbey.

In Allestree, Darley Abbey & Derby constable to approach occupiers about receiving evacuees. The council Clerk, Mr. G.A. Dawes refused this request saying “If a billeting officer was not prepared to carry into effect the compulsory powers invested in him, he should in the interest of the evacuation scheme and himself, relinquish the position so that he could be replaced.”

In reply, Mr. H.H. Dix expressed the view that schoolchildren would be happier in working class homes!

DON’T SAY “DUCK” An amusing report occurred about an evacuee, billeted to Darley Abbey and he was so scared of bombs and Doodlebugs he liked to sleep with his boots on.

In Derbyshire we were warned not to call evacuees “Duck”, as they were likely to throw themselves onto the floor!

George Stevens, Chairman of Belper Rural District Council said that in Darley Abbey he had not needed to resort to statutory compulsory requisition and that generally, Darley villagers dutifully stepped up and took evacuees into their homes.

Allestree Evacuees

By August 1944, Allestree was “Full Up With Evacuees” with over 100 official evacuees plus an unknown number of unofficial ones. The Rev, Walter Greenhalgh, converted a room at his vicarage into a schoolroom to accommodate some of the overspill of pupils from the village school.

In Allestree, Darley Abbey & Derby FIG 12: Rev. Walter Greenhalgh, converted a room at the vicarage into a schoolroom.

On Thursday December 8th, 1944 Allestree parish council, agreed to recommend the co-option of Mr. R.H.A. Dyer, one of their members, as parish representative on Belper Rural District Council, who asked for a nomination following the resignation of Mr. E.R. Bullough, for reasons of health. Mr. Bullough also resigned as billeting officer for Allestree, and he is to be asked if he can suggest anyone to take his place. (DDT Friday 8th December 1944).

I reached out to Allestree Village History (Facebook group) to ask for information about WW2 evacuees, billeted at Allestree. I received a couple of replies.

Through the Facebook group, I learned that two girl evacuees were billeted no. 23 Scarsdale Avenue and they stayed with a Mr. and Mrs. Potter. Their names; Grace and Emma Dixon and they didn’t stay there for a very long time.

Phil Prince, who now lives in Canada, informed me that a boy from Kent, Leonard Cooper

WW2 Evacuees arrived at Allestree schoolrooms in August 1944. Initially he was billeted with a Mrs. Roome and her son Douglas at No. 25 West Bank Road. Mrs. Roome struggled to cope with Leonard (we don’t know why), so soon after he transferred next door to No. 27, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Prince and their four-yearold daughter Joan. Leonard was born on the 26th of May 1934.

Joan Prince, Phil’s older sister. remembers that Mrs. Roome moved to West Row, Darley Abbey in the 1950s. Leonard was 11 years old on 26th May 1945.

Leonard’s parents, Len and Ina, came to visit Leonard junior in 1945 at Allestree and they took their son to visit his sister Mary who had been billeted to stay with a family near Alfreton.

They took young Joan Prince along to accompany Leonard.

They caught two or three buses to get to Alfreton but found themselves stranded as there was no bus returning to Derby that day. They stayed the night at the house of the family, billeting Mary.

Mr. and Mrs. Prince were so worried that something had happened to their daughter; they contacted the police when they failed to return by late in the nighttime, thinking there had been an accident or that Joan had been kidnapped.

Leonard lived in Hong Kong for a few years, before returning to Kent where he owned a golf course. When Mrs. Prince passed away in 1999, Leonard’s wife Joyce and one of their daughters came from Kent to attend Mrs. Prince’s funeral in Derby.
