he week is almost over and you know what that means… Time to give in to that guilty pleasure and binge watch that show you did not dare to think about during the week. But have you ever wondered where it all started? And who to thank, for bringing us the gift of Netflix?
1997
Netflix was born 18 years ago! Did you know that Netflix is the same age as many of the freshmen here at UT? Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph co-founded Netflix in California in 1997 to offer online movie rentals.
1999
Two years after its launch, Netflix established the subscription-based service that

Feb. 25, Netflix announced its billionth DVD delivery.
2000
By 2009, Netflix had a collection of 100,000 titles on DVD and surpassed 10 million subscribers.

Have you ever started a show just because it was recommended for you on Netflix? The personalized movie recommendation system was launched in 2000. It was programmed so that Netflix members’ ratings would help predict choices for the rest of the community.
2007
After ten years of development, Netflix introduced streaming. This feature allowed subscribers to instantly watch show and movies on their personal computers. On

Netflix became available on Apple products, the Nintendo Wii, and other Internet connected devices. Netflix also launched its service out of the country for the first time in Canada.
2011
Netflix attempts to split it’s products offerings into two. After a few weeks of vocal
customer outrage, Netflix scrapped the idea, and returned to it’s original format.
2012
Netflix uses user preference data to write and producer one of their first original series, House of Cards. It’s released all at once to allow people to binge watch the entire series.
2014
Netflix launched its service in six countries in Europe and won 7 creative Emmy Awards for House of Cards and Orange is the New
Black. Netflix reached 50 million members globally.
2015
Have you heard the phrase “netflix and chill?” Although the euphemism was first traced to 2014, the phrase became viral this summer, which can be credited to celebrities such as Nicki Minaj. Additionally, on Oct. 8, the Netflix standard monthly subscription price saw a dollar increase from $8.99 to $9.99.
2016
Netflix is planning to launch in Asian countries: South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. By the end of 2016, Netflix hopes to be available globally.
