utherford Regional Health System, a top 100 hospital, provides a wealth of services to citizens of Rutherford County. Here is a sample of the services Rutherford Regional provides:

Left untreated, urinary tract infection can cause permanent damage

Dr. Grover Little

Painful urination, urinar y frequency with little output and urine that is cloudy or smells bad may mean you are suffering from a urinar y tract infection, an infection that many adults will experience at some point in their lives. Urinar y tract infections occur when germs get into your

system through your urethra, the tube that carries urine from your bladder to the outside of your body. Urinar y tract infections, or UTIs, are more common in women because they have shorter urethras, making it easier for germs to move into their bladders. The germs that typically cause a

UTI live in your large intestine and are found in your stool. Most urinar y tract infections are bladder infections, which is usually not serious if treated right away. Left untreated, it can spread to your kidneys; a kidney infection is serious and can cause permanent damage. More serious signs of infection are fever and chills and nausea and vomiting. UTIs are diagnosed from a urine sample to check for germs, and are treated with antibiotics. These infections can be

prevented by drinking lots of water and other fluids each day and urinating when you feel like you have to, and by completely emptying your bladder each time. UTIs are more likely if you do not drink enough fluids, you have diabetes or you are pregnant. The chance that you will get a bladder infection is higher if you have any problem that blocks the flow of urine from your bladder, such as having kidney stones or an enlarged prostate gland. Locally, Dr. Glover Little is an expert on urinary health. He is accepting patients and can be contacted by calling Rutherford Urology at 828-287-7332 or learn more at MyRutherfordRegional. com/Urology.

Painless lump could be a sign of a hernia A lump in the abdomen could be a hernia. Hernias can cause soft, small and painless lumps or lumps that are a little painful and swollen. As much as 10 percent of the population develops some type of hernia during life. Locally, the board certified surgeons at Rutherford Surgical Associates in Rutherfordton are experts in treating hernias that require surgery. A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of where they are normally located. Usually these contents are portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue, and enclosed in the thin membrane that naturally lines the inside of the cavity. Abdominal hernias can be

present at birth, but others develop later in life. Any condition that increases pressure in the abdominal cavity may create or worsen a hernia, including obesity, heavy lifting, coughing, straining,

chronic lung disease and fluid in the abdominal cavity. Those with a family history of hernias may also be more at risk of developing a hernia. The signs and symptoms of hernias can include a painless lump to severely tender, painful swollen protrusion of tissue that you are unable to push back into the abdomen. Hernias by themselves may see services/page 2

not produce symptoms or cause slight to severe pain. Nearly all have the potential risk of having their blood supply cut off; if this happens at the hernia opening in the abdominal wall, it becomes a medical and surgical emergency as the tissue needs oxygen, which is transported by the blood supply. Signs of a strangulated hernia include pain followed quickly by tenderness and nausea and vomiting. Some hernias might never worsen, but you should visit your doctor to have any hernia checked. Referral to a surgeon from your family practice provider should generally be made so that the need for surgery can be established. Hernia surgeries can be performed as an elective surgery. Hernia repair is one of the most common types of surgery in the U.S., and many hernias of the groin are often repaired using laparascopy. This is a technique where instruments are inserted into the abdomen through several small incisions or cuts. Recovery is often quick without complications. Hernias can be prevented through diet and exercise, learning how to lift heavy objects properly, and stopping smoking. Hernia surgery is just one of the offerings available at Rutherford Surgical Associates, located at 330 Hwy 108 in Rutherfordton. Recently the practice welcomed its newest surgeon, Dr. Diego Pabon, a board certified surgeon who is fluent in English and Spanish and is currently accepting patients. For more information on Rutherford Surgical Associates, call 828-286-1743 or visit MyRutherfordRegional. com/GeneralSurgery.

Don’t wait too long to talk about hospice care It’s an all too common situation. A family is at the bedside of a loved one who is seriously ill and nearing the end of life. Each member of the family has a different idea of what should be done and what the patient would have wanted. Far too many people wait until they are in the midst of a health care crisis before thinking about what options are available or what care they or their loved ones would have wanted. Hospice of Rutherford County professionals deal with these challenging situations every day – that’s what they are trained

to do. When a family is coping with a serious illness and a cure is no longer possible, Hospice of Rutherford County provides the type of care most people say they want at the end of life: comfort and dignity. “Hospice is a type of care that focuses on living … living as fully as possible, up until the end of life,” said Rita Burch, chief executive officer for Hospice of Rutherford County. “Hospice brings comfort, love and respect to the patients and families we care for.” Considered to be the

model for high-quality, compassionate care for people with a life-limiting illness, hospice care includes expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support. Care is provided by an interdisciplinar y team of professionals and trained volunteers. The wishes of the patient and family are always at the center of care. “The goal of hospice care is to treat the person instead of the disease, and focus on the family caregivers not just the individual,” Burch continued. “The quality of life is empha-

sized, not its duration.” Hospice care can be provided in a patient’s home, nursing home, assisted living facility, hospital or the SECU Hospice House. Care is paid for by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance plans. Hospice providers can help with information about care options and choices and ensure you live as fully as possible throughout your entire life. They will make sure your loved ones receive support as well. Hospice of Rutherford County also provides pal-

liative care. “Palliate” means to make comfortable by treating a person’s symptoms resulting from a serious illness. The goals of palliative care are to improve the quality of a seriously ill person’s life and to support that person and their family during and after treatment. Palliative care may be given at any time during a person’s illness, from diagnosis on. Under hospice care, a patient focuses on comfort care and quality of life. Under palliative care, a patient may continue with other treatments being provided by his or her doc-

tor. Hospice of Rutherford County also of fers support groups and individual counseling for those who have suffered a loss as well as advance care planning. “One of the best ways to make sure you and your loved ones benefit fully from hospice, should you ever need this care, is to talk about it before it becomes an issue,” Burch added. For more information, contact Hospice of Rutherford County at 828-245-0095 or visit hospiceofrutherford.org.

Chiropractic and Massage: Hand in Hand at THERA-SSAGE

Working with a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) is beneficial to patients, physicians People value the use of their hands; therefore, any loss of function through injury or disease can devastate lives. Treatment of most hand conditions requires specialized treatment, as the hand is such a compact and intricate structure. According to Dr. Roy Meals, a hand surgeon at UCLA, many physicians direct patients to Certified Hand Therapists to ensure good results after surgery in the hand and upper extremity. Dr. Meals says, “I enlist the specialized skills of a Certified Hand Therapist to oversee my patients’ care. CHTs are entirely familiar with the diseases and injuries that I treat. CHTs efficiently and effectively manage my patients’ hand rehabilitation. The Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) credential offers assurance to the public that the therapist treating them has achieved the highest recognition of competency in the profession of upper limb rehabilitation and has met all requirements set forth by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission. These requirements include at least five years of clinical experience as an occupational therapist or physical therapist, a minimum of 4,000 hours in direct practice in hand therapy, and successful completion of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper limb rehabilitation. There are approximately 5,400 individuals worldwide hold this marked designation. St. Luke’s Hospital is pleased to announce Karol Young MS, OTR/L, CHT, Occupational Therapist

We do things differ ently at THERASSAGE. Dr. Ezra Edger ton, our Chiropractor, practices traditional spinal manipulation. We do not believe in unnecessarily subjecting people to radiation, unless there is a ver y pressing reason to do so. We do not tr y to sign you up for a dozen visits. We don’t have any financial officers on our staf f. We don’t pass you around from person to person. I guess you could say we’re old-fashioned. We like being that way. Many times, shor tened muscles are the cause of a misalignment. The massage therapists here work in harmony with Dr. Edgerton. He frees the “stuck joints, and we work the soft tissue, with optimal results. The good doctor prevents what he

treats. Dr. Edgerton is passionate about good nutrition, and believes it is the key to the successful management, and sometimes total elimination, of many conditions. Many insurance policies will cover your care. Laura Allen, the owner of THERASSAGE, is the author of four textbooks and one of the most respected authorities on massage in the US. She teaches massage therapy internationally, is devoted to the evidence-based practice of massage, and has assembled a professional staf f of massage therapists who treat you with courtesy and who want to give you the best care possible. We specialize in getting people out of pain and relieving stress. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you.

Natural ways to alleviate acid reflux

For additional information regarding the rehabilitation program at St. Luke’s Hospital or to schedule an appointment with one of our therapists, please call 8948719.

Rather than taking medication, some people might be able to make certain lifestyle changes to relieve acid reflux. • Pay attention to the foods you eat. Acidic foods, such as tomatoes, citrus fruits and even raisins, can increase the amount of acid in the stomach. • Use natural digestion enhancers. Ginger root has long been used to calm the stomach. Fennel, a licorice-flavored

vegetable, may improve stomach function. Parsley has been used as a medicinal herb to settle the stomach for thousands of years. • Stock up on apple cider vinegar. Try mixing one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into four ounces of water to drink before, during or after a meal. • Practice portion control at mealtime. Opt for more frequent and smaller meals instead of larger infrequent ones.

Fair Haven offers quality care at a variety of levels

ELLENBORO — From a 32-bed rest home nearly 50 years ago to moving toward the Green House Project, the three generations of McKeithans have always had visions for the care of senior citizens in Rutherford County. Mack McKeithan, owner and second generation family member of Fair Haven, quotes the writer of Proverbs: “without a vision the people perish” and said he and his staff have always had visions to keep moving. The rest home opened in April 1964 with his mother Iris McKeithan and his aunt, Bill Higgins, at the helm. Named after a town the Apostle Paul visited on one of his missionary journeys in Biblical days, Fair Haven sits on a hill off U.S. 74B between Forest City and Ellenboro. Third generation family members, Dan and Charlie McKeithan, sons of Mack and his wife Pam Flack McKeithan, are on the administrative staff. Dan, who has been there 16 years, is admissions/social services director and Charlie is the business office manager. He’s been on board 11 years. Mack has been a fixture at the facility more than 42 years. As a student in Rutherford County Schools, he learned the ropes of the business going there after school to work. In 1971 after graduating from Appalachian State University with a health and management administrative degree, Mack married high school sweetheart, Pam Flack. He was working on a temporary basis at Fair Haven and was planning to get his master’s degree when his mother suffered a heart attack in 1972 and she wasn’t able to physically or mentally operate the rest home so returned to Fair Haven and has been there since. Concerned however, that he had very little knowledge of the medical side of the rest home, Mack called Isothermal Community College inquiring about a Licensed Practical Nursing Class. The class was scheduled the next day so he signed up and nearly a year later got his LPN license. “We always felt the need to have nurses to cover our bases,” Mack said. “Even before the rest home grew and a skilled nursing facility was open, registered nurses and LPNs were on staff. “We wanted that level of care,” he said. Fair Haven was the first rest home in Rutherford County to hire an activity director, “a key element” in the lives of the residents and also the first rest home to adopt the Eden concept. The Eden concept gives meaningful care to residents through plants, animals or visits by children. Fair Haven’s two resident dogs are standard black poodles named Rodeo and Bear, and have proven to ease loneliness or anxiety for some patients. They provide therapy that other measures of care do not. In 1979, Mack was serving on the State Baptist Convention’s Long Term Care committee and believed there was a better way to serve the senior citizens in the state. So Mack and Fair Haven moved forward with its next vision — Eastwood Village opened in 1979. Today there are 37 homes in the retirement community adjacent to the rest home. “It is independent living with supportive services,” Mack said. From there the family moved toward opening the skilled nursing care, a goal that took five years to accomplish but in 1992, Fair Haven added 30 skilled nursing beds. But today Mack believes the concept of “skilled family care is broken” and he and his staff are mov-

ing toward its next vision, the Green House Project. There is not a Green House Project in North Carolina although they are in more than 35 other states. “It will be an uphill battle because there will be regulatory changes,” Mack said. He and his staff will be in Raleigh the first of April hoping to convince the powers-that-be to allow Fair Haven to move forward with the project. A Green House is designed for only 10 to 12 residents and each occupant has a private room and bath. Green Houses include a shared kitchen that everyone uses and care is provided by certified nursing assistants (CNAs). If Mack receives approval, he will build two six-bed homes for rest home residents and two 11-bed homes for skilled care. Mack and the staff are willing to take on the challenge, because it is one he believes will be the bestfor senior citizens for the future. “This will change the whole dynamics of skilled nursing care,” he said. “We want to make sure that care is the best there is for our county.” The rest home and skilled nursing offered at Fair Haven will remain but will be extended to the homes. Through nearly one half of a century, one concept has always remained — providing the best care for its residents. Over the past 50 years, Fair Haven has been the home to World War I veterans, politicians, mayors, scientists, lawyers, teachers, doctors, preachers and authors. One resident was a childhood friend of Gloria Vanderbilt and played on the lawn of the Vanderbilt’s Biltmore House many times; another resident told the story of keeping the baby cradle of Abraham Linlcon in a family’s barn outside of Bostic. “Her parents said she was never to talk about that,” Mack said. Another resident was at Pearl Habor and watched the USS Arizona sink and another was a nurse at Pearl Harbor. Dr. Ben Washburn, medical doctor, researcher and author also resided at Fair Haven. “An interesting group of people, all a part of the tapestry of Rutherford County,” Mack said of residents. Fair Haven is a 5-Star Medicare facility, the only one in Rutherford County and a distinction that only 16 percent of facilities achieve in the state. Fair Haven is the only family-run rest home/skilled nursing care facility in the county as the others have been sold or leased to bigger corporations, he said. “We’re small, but we’re high quality,” he said. Twenty-two years ago the McKeithan family was told Fair Haven would never make it in the business world. “In our industry we are a dynasty,” he said. Today Fair Haven employs 88 people and has an annual payroll of $2 million and supports local businesses. “All this stays in Rutherford County. It does not go to corporate offices,” Mack said. “Rutherford County has the best people and we want to offer them the best care.” For the long time employee and owner, Mack is not tired of going to work. Through the years at Fair Haven, Mack is not tired. “It’s a calling. It’s rewarding,” he said.

Comprehensive care for your breast health is available at Rutherford Regional Rutherford Regional’s Breast Care Program is designed to provide each patient with comprehensive and compassionate care. Your first step in maintaining your breast health is a mammogram. According to the National Cancer Institute, women ages 40 and older should include a mammogram as part of their annual physical – and those with a family histor y of breast cancer or have had other breast problems might need to begin getting mammograms earlier than age 40 or more often. Mammograms can detect breast cancers earlier than clinical breast exams. Women who undergo treatment for breast cancers found at the earliest stage have more than a 98 percent sur vival rate at five years. A mammogram detects changes in breast tissue that are not normal, such as lumps or masses and calcifications, by using a low-dose X-ray. A mammogram is read by a radiologist, who will compare your past mammograms with your most recent one to check for changes. At Rutherford Regional’s Mammography Place, mammograms are provided through digital mammography, which allows the radiologist to view the X-ray image more closely, zeroing in on suspicious or concerning areas. Digital mammography provides not only better images of the breast, it also reduces the amount of radiation needed for quality images. With digital mammography, a radiologist can view and manipulate the images on high-resolution computer monitors that

calcifications, masses and other changes that may be signs of early cancer. Digital mammography may be more beneficial for women with dense breasts who are pre- or perimenopausal or who are younger than age 50. Should a change be detected in your breasts during a routine mammogram, you will have a diagnostic mammogram. A diagnostic mammogram is similar to a screening mammogram, but takes longer because it involves more X-rays in order to obtain views of the breast from several angles. Your physician may also order other tests, such as an ultrasound, MRI or biopsy. Patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer will have access to a patient navigator, a specially trained registered nurse who offers educational and emotional support from the time of diagnosis until recover y. Your navigator is there to assist your family as well. Patient navigators are available to attend appointments with your physician to help you understand your care. A multidisciplinar y case review, involving medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, surgeons and the patient navigator is conducted for each patient. Working together, the team will determine the best course of care for you and determine the treatment

and testing referrals. Should you need surger y, certified physical therapists are available after surger y for lymphedema therapy to help minimize arm swelling. In addition to the support from your navigator, Rutherford Regional’s Cancer Resource Center offers support groups and classes for those undergoing breast cancer treatments. In partnership with American Cancer Society, the Center offers Look Good Feel Better, a class that provides skin and beauty care information. The Pink Ladies Support Group is open to any woman who is experiencing or has sur vived cancer. This vibrant group of women is committed to making the most of life and giving back to the community around them. Those who need a prosthesis or mastectomy bra can be fitted by a professional mastectomy ser vices fitter at the Center, a ser vice that is offered in partnership with Smith’s Drugs of Forest City. Most medical insurances will cover the cost of the supplies if a doctor’s prescription is provided. The Center also offers computer access, educational materials and more. A trip to the beach is an enjoyable way to spend a day. With warm waves lapping at your feet and a good book to enjoy, hours relaxing at the seaside tend to pass by quite quickly. While such days are often comfortable and relaxing, if you aren’t careful, you may be putting yourself at risk of sunburn and sun poisoning. Sunburns are never a good thing, but sun poisoning can be even more severe and the symptoms can become quite serious and uncomfortable. Despite what the term “sun poisoning implies, the sun does not poison the body. Rather, the term describes sensitivity to sunlight that results in a wide range of symptoms that can affect the skin and body as a whole. Sun poisoning can occur when one has a sun allergy, called solar urticaria. This is very rare. However, the greatest number of sun poisoning cases are simply a severe form of sunburn. Depending on the pigmentation of a person’s skin and the severity of the sun, sunburn can occur in mere minutes. Many people can get a sunburn within 15 minutes of being in the sun. The sun’s rays are most potent between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., making the majority of the day a prime time for skin damage. Although sunburn can occur quite quickly, many people do not realize anything has occurred right away. That’s because sunburn symptoms can be delayed. It may take a few hours for redness to appear and discomfort to set in. Staying in the sun too long without wearing adequate protection, whether it be a wide-brimmed hat, protective clothing or ample

Sun poisoning and sunburns are nothing to take lightly. These conditions are easy to prevent by being smart about sun exposure. amounts of sunblock, can lead to sunburn. Over time, sunburn can progress to sun poisoning. Symptoms of sun poisoning include a severe sunburn accompanied by blisters on the skin. Pain and tingling may occur, as well as swelling where the sun touched the body intensely. Sun poisoning also may cause fever and chills, nausea, dizziness, and dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, as the body’s immune system attempts to kick into action. The best treatment for sun poisoning is prevention. Avoid blazing sun whenever possible and use sunblock and reapply frequently if you must be out in the sun for any duration of time. Otherwise, some cases of sun poisoning can be relieved with the application of cool compresses or by taking cool (not cold) baths. Application of aloe gels also can alleviate discomfort, in addition to taking a pain relieving NSAID pill.

If at any point a fever occurs and spikes to more than 104 F, or if there is extreme pain and vomiting, head to the emergency room. Doctors may have to quickly reduce swelling and inflammation and administer fluids intravenously to get the body back on track. Keep in mind that blisters from sun poisoning can get infected, so it is adviseable to keep the skin clean and avoid picking at or popping blisters. Discuss any concerns about severe sunburn with a doctor. Frequent sunburns can be linked to accelerated skin aging and can put a person at a higher risk for skin cancer. According to the Cleveland Clinic, ultraviolet, or UV, radiation from the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer, but UV light from tanning beds is just as harmful. Cumulative sun exposure causes basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer, while episodes of severe blistering sunburns, usually before age 18, can cause melanoma later in life.

St. Luke’s Hospital introduces new program Senior Life Solutions offers professional help with life’s emotional and physical changes Depression and Anxiety aren’t healthy at any age. The issues affecting seniors are uniquely challenging. Declining physical ability, loss of loved ones and isolation can lead to depression, anxiety and other issues. But problems like these are not normal at any age. It can be hard to recognize an older adult in need. It may also be difficult to get them to accept assistance. People who have been healthy and independent for such a long time can often resist help with the emotional and physical changes they know are taking place. St. Luke’s Hospital has a new program, Senior Life Solutions, an intensive outpatient counseling program which addresses the emotional and behavioral health of adults over the age of 55. Through a combination of therapies, education and wellness programs, Senior Life Solutions assists older adults who are experiencing depression, anxiety, have recently experienced a traumatic event and a host of many other symptoms. With this new program, patients can discover how to handle life’s challenges and find joy once again. The program works to improve the emotional stability and increase

general functioning, as well as help patients identify, develop and increase the use of effective coping skills by emphasizing the existing strengths of the individual and/or family system. Problems that may indicate a need for referral to Senior Life Solutions include: • Anger • Anxiety, Ner vousness • Depressed Mood • Difficulty Coping with Health/Physical Changes • Difficulty Concentrating • Feelings of Hopelessness or Helplessness • Isolation or Loneliness • Low Self-Esteem • Personality Changes • Sleep or Appetite Changes • Unresolved Grief Senior Life Solutions staff work with patients to determine the most appropriate treatment for each person and their family. This initial admission assessment is free and confidential. Referrals to Senior Life Solutions can be made by anyone, including a patient’s physician, family member, or other health care professional. Since 2007, the American Psychological Association has commissioned an annual nationwide survey to examine the state of stress across the United States and understand its impact. The 2013 survey found that people continue to experience what they feel are unhealthy stress levels, with 42 percent of adult respondents reporting that their stress levels have increased over the past five years. Though many people unfortunately regard stress as an inevitable side effect of adulthood, it’s important that men, women and even children avoid characterizing stress as simply a byproduct of a difficult and/or successful life and career. Even momentary stress, often referred to as “acute stress,” like the kind that appears when stuck in a traffic jam, can have a potentially devastating impact on overall health. According to the American Institute of Stress, acute stress causes an increase in heart rate and stronger contractions of the heart muscle, and some medical professionals have suggested there is a link between repeated episodes of acute stress and heart attack. Regular use of relaxation techniques to reduce stress can help to counteract the effects of long-term stress, which the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes can contribute to depression, digestive disorders, headaches, high blood pressure, and insomnia. While it’s always best for anyone, and especially those people with heart disease, epilepsy, certain psychiatric conditions or a history of abuse or trauma, to consult

Meditation

There are many types of meditation, but in general people who meditate employ certain techniques when meditating. These techniques may include maintaining a specific posture or finding a quiet, distraction-free location to meditate. Many practitioners of meditation choose to recite a positive mantra that they repeat throughout their session. While many people question the effectiveness of meditation, research has suggested that routine meditation sessions can alter the brain’s neural pathways and make a person more

capable of combatting stress.

Yoga

Yoga has grown increasingly popular in recent years, and much of that can be traced to the multitude of health benefits that have been linked to this typically low-impact practice of the mind and body. The NCCAM notes that studies have suggested yoga is effective at lowering heart rate and blood pressure and can even relieve anxiety and depression. Those are beneficial side effects for sufferers of stress, which over time can contribute to high blood pressure and arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) and even cause people to worry too much about minor things or suspect bad things are about to happen. More information about stress and coping techniques is available at www.apa.org.
