Eddie Hollis, Battalion Chief B Shift, Central Station Start Date: 2/27/89 I became a firefighter because: As a young boy I would go with my father to the firehouse to watch him work on the fire trucks. I would get up in the cab and imagine I would be driving to a call, siren blazing, spraying water and helping people. I was fascinated with all of the equipment and fire trucks. My most proud accomplishment: Making Battalion Chief, carrying on a legacy, following my dad in the fire service and making him proud of me.

Since 2007

I became a firefighter because: The drive I have to help others in times of need. Of course there will always be fires, as long as buildings are constructed by man, but that is only a small way that firefighters help the public in which they serve. One of the greatest feelings as a public servant is knowing that you were able to make someone’s day better by helping them in their time of need, no matter what that need may be. And in many cases those needs are not fire related at all.

Start Date: 06-30-14 I became a firefighter because: Like many other young kids, it was always a job to look up to and I never grew out of it. Growing up my dad was a volunteer and I got to hang around the firehouse and go on some calls and this always stuck with me and I knew this was what I wanted to be. What I enjoy most about my job: It’s hard to choose just one, but getting to serve the community I live in and help others in their time of need is very rewarding. Also being able to hang out with my brothers and develop a friendship and become family is another great thing.

I became a firefighter because: When I was in kindergarten at Syndey Deener Elementary my mother would walk me to school down Market Street. We would pass by the old Fire Station #2. I remember the fireman being outside, always being nice and waving at me when we would walk by. It just stuck with me how they were always nice and that they had a job that being nice and helping people in need was the makeup of their job.

There are many aspects of my job that I love, but being there for people who truly need you at quite possibly the worst moment of their life is very rewarding. It’s really an awesome feeling to wake up every third morning knowing you get to go to a job that you love. What I enjoy most about my job: You have no idea what your day will consist of. I became a firefighter because: While growing up as a son of a police officer, I learned the importance of helping others in need. My dad used to take my brother and I to the fire department side of the public service building in our city and I would love the experience of checking out all the equipment, watching the guys move when the tones went off, and even the involvement of them eating dinner together. I definitely was hooked in the fire service and became a cadet firefighter when I was as young as 16 years old. What I enjoy most about my job: The satisfaction of helping others. It may be as huge as helping them extinguish a fire in their house to simply replacing the batteries in their smoke detector. Knowing that we are available to help everyone in our city makes me proud and happy to have this job.
