WELCOME

Happy New Year O

nce again, with all of the different luxury magazines that are currently in the marketplace, we would like to take the time to thank you for reading ours. The New Year is a time where most of us set out to accomplish new goals, keep resolutions, and start our year off better than the last. Nothing feels better than setting lofty goals and accomplishing them. In this edition you will find some helpful tips for how to keep those resolutions permanently, even if you have failed to keep them before. As we look forward to 2014 let’s not forget to take a moment to remember what we are thankful for from 2013. It was an exciting year for us. We were able to add a new publication for cardiovascular medical professionals and successfully launch Elite Tampa Bay. I personally am grateful to live in what I consider to be the best city in the country, to our sponsors for giving us the funding needed to produce such a beautiful publication, and most of all to you. Without our readers, our magazine wouldn’t exist and we wouldn’t get to bring you the best luxury products and services that the Tampa Bay area has to offer. We are excited to start off the New Year and marketers should be excited to start off the New Year fresh. For months now, consumers have been inundated with a barrage of holiday-themed products that have outstayed their welcome so luxury brands will be using January as a transitional time that should set the tone for new collections and start telling the story of what is to come and we are excited to bring you these stories. Remember that some of the best days of your life haven’t happened yet.

Fashion Industry: FREE TRADE OR TRAITOR?

By Kristen Blake

O

ver the past several years we the public have listened as the debate rages and the fingers point over the nations growing debt, which administration is to blame? Which candidate will bring about the “Change” that is promised from the strategically staged town hall debates, and the constant barrage of commercials. Without a doubt many Americans do not realize that behind every candidate is a Fashion Stylist and Creative Director strategically orchestrating everything from what is worn by all members of the campaign, to the appropriate time of the candidate to hold the hand of their beloved spouse. As a Fashion Stylist and member of the Fashion Industry for over twenty years, the political arena is not unlike opening night of a favorite Broadway show. I love the staging, the dramatic pause, the perfectly timed camera shot of the reaction of the candidate, usually one of righteous indignation after hearing something that is, according to the platform presented to the American people, supposed to deeply offend. Last year during the Summer Olympics in London I was not surprised to hear the criticism of America’s beloved designer Ralph Lauren. On one hand both Democrats and Republicans seemed to agree this was a major faux pas. There was not a publication, news station that did not have a comment, article or allotted airtime to this issue. Yes, the uniforms were produced in China. The Huffington Posts Donna Cossata captured the rage

January 2014

felt by our representatives. Stating that the Chinese manufactured berets, blazers and pants with the American economy struggles and many U.S workers are desperate for jobs. Cassata went on to gain quotes from then Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,”I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,” Reid went on to say “If they have to wear nothing but a singlet that says USA on it, painted by hand, then that’s what they should wear,” he said, referring to an athletic jersey. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi weighed in during a weekly news conference that despite being proud of the nation’s Olympic athletes “They should be wearing uniforms that are made in America.”

This caused me great pause. Though I understand the outrage, and the benefit that showing this rage to the American people could do to further ones political career. Showing empathy with those that have for certain had a rough go for many years I felt as if I was the only one that recalled the fight for free trade with China, which began in the 1970’s under Nixon and continued for two decades. With threats of imposing a 3.9 Billion in 1991 unless China opened it’s trade even further and pushing for membership to the WTO, which did happen in 2001. Our elected officials, that we the people, voted into office have facilitated and actively participated in where we stand today. Some thirty plus years since the ball began to roll nearly 40 years ago. Where was our outrage then? You will be hard pressed to find a beloved American brand that is manufactured in the U.S. From Ralph Lauren, J Crew, Coach leathers and apparel and many more. These brands that American’s have taken a stand against because their elected officials have told them that they are to blame need to educate themselves on the other side of the coin. It is easy to forget the long road in which we the American people fought for free trade and due to personal circumstances or who our political leaders tell us who is to blame. As a proud member of the Fashion industry that is under constant scrutiny based on the topic of free trade, I challenge the American people and our elected officials to give us an alternative. One that allows us to produce the garments and accessories at the quality and the price we need to allow the American people to have a chance at affording their favorite American brands. Perhaps if Ralph Lauren suddenly became Goldman Sachs, J Crew became JP Morgan Chase there would be finances and incentive to bring the production back. Or perhaps you may recall Fruit of the Loom? Brown Shoe Co. (BWS)? Cannon Mills? Levi Strauss? In 1970 these were the largest U.S. apparel and fabric companies. They did not have outsourcing or free trade as an option and are either bankrupt, manufactured by another company or simply out of business. So truly ask yourself, who betrayed whom? Was it the Fashion Industry leaders that found a way to survive these economic times for over 45 years as Ralph Lauren did? Or those we placed in power to make the decisions for us, our trusted leaders. That consists of both parties, and spans 40 years. 16

7 GASPARILLA PARADE DAY

TIPS TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BLAST

E

very year over four hundred thousand people flock to South Tampa to celebrate the pirate’s invasion of the city of Tampa. I have been a South Tampa resident for many years and have experienced countless Gasparilla parades. Every year I see people making the same mistakes that I made after first moving to Tampa. Knowing a few basic Gasparilla tips will help you avoid these mistakes and make this year’s Gasparilla parade the experience that you always hoped it would be.

1. DON’T BRING YOUR CHILDREN TO THE GASPARILLA PARADE While you may have romanticized the idea of bringing your kids down to the parade to watch the floats ride down Bayshore, it is the absolute worst place for children. Unless you want your children getting run over while some drunk co-ed runs to catch plastic beads, take them to the children’s parade the week before. The Gasparilla Children’s Parade is alcohol free and all of the activities are child friendly. Plus you will be free to enjoy the adult fun while your nanny/sitter watches your kids. 2. DON’T WEAR FLIP FLOPS While most of us Floridians are accustomed to wearing flip flops all of the time, Gasparilla is the one occasion that sneakers are a must-have. While glass is forbidden along the parade route, January 2014

people still bring glass beer bottles and broken glass litters the streets. Not to mention the thousands of people jam packed along the streets who will inevitably step on your feet. Last year I was forced to step over a large red puddle that resembled blood, in my flip flops! 3. PREARRANGE A MEETING PLACE AND TIME In today’s world we have become accustomed to calling our friends on our iPhones to find each other. This doesn’t work during the Gasparilla Parade, due to the large amount of cell phones downtown it is next to impossible to send or receive cell phone calls in the Gasparilla Parade vicinity. If you want to meet your friends at the Gasparilla Parade, pick a street corner or store and meet there at a specific time.

Elite Tampa Bay

4. BRING YOUR OWN BEER Alcohol goes hand in hand with the Gasparilla Parade, but the lines at the beer vendors and parties can be in excess of a half hour wait! Unless you want to be grabbing your beers and headed directly back to the rear of the line again to wait, bring a cooler! Just don’t bring any glass. 5. GET TO THE GASPARILLA PARADE EARLY Finding a parking spot at the Gasparilla Parade is as hard to find as the “X” on a pirate’s treasure map. Save yourself some time and money and leave early in the morning and snag a parking spot in one the downtown parking garages.

January 2014

6. BRING CASH If you plan on buying food, drinks, or trinkets during the Gasparilla Parade make sure to bring cash. Most parade vendors do not accept credit cards. 7. HEAD TO THE BATHROOMS WELL IN ADVANCE Unless you head to the downtown Publix, you will have to use portable toilets along the Gasparilla Parade route. These toilets always have long lines and as you can guess aren’t the most luxurious of bathrooms. So head to the bathrooms as soon as you have the urge, and bring along some sanitizing wipes!

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

LIMOUSINES AND TAXIS? M

ost travelers today are cost-conscious and internet-savvy. Before hitting the “SUBMIT” or “BUY NOW” button, they compare rates, and scour the web for the best airline & hotel rates in search of rock bottom deals. But when it comes to ground transportation, the difference between taxi and limousine service needs clarification. There is a huge misconception that taxis are cheaper than limousines. This is no longer true. If you call for a cab at the airport, you’ll wait 30-45 minutes for curbside pickup, and get driven – that’s it. That may be okay, but you won’t get the bang for your buck. For this example, I chose Burbank to LAX. According to Google Maps, the distance is 29.4 miles, or 47.11 km. Check out the price! The cost-conscious traveler who’s trying to save money will pay $101.52 for a cab, including tips. (Would you be inclined to tip, if, say, the driver is rude, takes a long route, and drives a smelly,

January 2014

run-down vehicle, dirty from the previous fare? Did I mention – with no A/C?) Now let’s compare to what the same person would get with a limousine service: • A Luxury Sedan, late model Lincoln Towncar, Cadillac, BMW, and/or Mercedes with amenities like climate control, plush leather interior, A/C, and seating for 2-3 passengers with plenty of room for luggage • Chilled water bottles • WiFi-access (in some vehicles) • Listen to your own music by connecting your iPod or iPhone, Sirium XM

A 2010 customer survey shows that 85% of people would be willing to spend 5-25% more to ensure a superior customer experience. We agree. The difference between a taxi and a limo service is really night & day. Don’t jump into a cab when you can be chauffeured in style. We’re only a click or a phone call away. Call Luxury Transportation Limousine at 727-580-0344 today! In today’s busy life there are plenty of ways of transportation like cab or taxi, buses, metro, local buses, train, airplane, personal car and ship. Today black or white limos are also used for transportation. There is hundreds of Limo Company which are available in many countries. Gone those days when only political, sports or Hollywood celebrities used to sit in limo. Today an ordinary men or women can also sit in limo. The difference between cab and limousine are mentioned below. They are Sitting Capacity: We all are very aware that there is very less sitting capacity is taxi. Four to five persons can only sit in taxi, but in limo many people can sit very easily and comfortably. Status and Style: The word “Limo or Limousine “sounds like a status. Many top personalities used to sit in limo. Take the example of any country; the president and prime minister are used to travel in limo. Thus it is the sign of status and style. Luxurious and Memorable Services: In limo there are many luxurious services like LCD, DVD, music system, MP3, internet facility, eatable items, mini bar (hard and soft drinks), mini refrigerator etc. All these services are not available in taxi. Fun and Fluoric: The youngsters can enjoy their dance party in limousine as well. They can even play the music and dance. Sign of Professionalism: Limo Companies are very professional because their services are extra ordinary and positively memorable. Driver vs. Chauffeurs: Basically, taxis are driven by drivers but these drivers cannot drive a limousine. So the question strikes in January 2014

the mind who drives limo? The answer is chauffeurs. Chauffeurs can also drive taxies as well as limos. Chauffeurs are all around better drivers.. These chauffeurs are very highly experienced and educated. On the basis of international survey, many tourist prefer limos only because they know it is the sign of professionalism. Privacy: In taxies there is no privacy, but in limousines there is 100 % privacy. Nobody will disturb you in a limo. Organization Status: If you want to impress your most important client, you can hire a limo for him from airport to hotel and vice versa. Vital Meeting in limo: If your time is very short, you can have official or private meetings in your limousine, but not in a taxi. Thus from the above points, we are very clear that limousines are much better than taxies. There are many private limo companies which are providing limo services at the airport also. The main advantage of airport limousines is that if you are new to place, then also no need to worry, just let your chauffeur know where you want to go and he will drop you off at your final destination. Working Smarter: COMBINATION EXERCISES By Ray Loeffler

B

eing a firm believer in hard work and consistency, I’m certainly a proponent of developing a long-term, sustainable healthy lifestyle as opposed to taking shortcuts with a fad exercise program that you can easily fall off of. However, we are all looking for ways to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of our workouts given the unavoidable constraints life throws our way. This is why I’m a big fan of combination exercises! Let’s discuss how and why they work. Combination exercises, as opposed to isolation exercises, are multi-joint movements that allow us to work more than one muscle group at a time. Many times, these exercises are also functional movements that can enhance the way we do our everyday activities and improve balance as well as strength. However, one of the greatest benefits is the ability to burn more calories during these exercises than you would doing isolation movements alone. This is because these will increase your heart rate as well as improve your strength which is exactly the goal of the majority of workout plans! For this article, I have developed a combination exercise workout routine that is designed to:

2) Hit all of the major muscle groups of your body. 3) Be done by anyone that has access to dumbbells. 4) BE EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE! Let’s get started! BURPEE INTO DUMBBELL MILITARY PRESS 1) Start in a pushup position with your hands grasping 2 lighter dumbbells. 2) Perform Push-Up then bring your knees in toward your chest. 3) Stand up straight, with dumbbells, lifting through your legs. 4) Swing dumbbells up over your shoulders to perform standing military overhead press. 5) Go back down to pushup position and repeat entire movement.

1) Work both sides of your body out evenly.

PLANK ROWS WITH TRICEPS KICK BACK 1) Get into plank position, with dumbbells in hands, keeping body straight. 2) Keeping elbow close to body, perform row with one arm. 3) When at peak of row, kick back arm to get a full extension through triceps area. 4) Return arm back down to floor and repeat. 5) Perform reps with one arm first, then the other.

DUMBBELL SQUAT INTO BICEPS CURL 1) Stand straight up with dumbbells at side. 2) Squat down, keeping back straight and placing weight on heels. 3) Squat back up into original position. 4) Perform biceps curl, return to original position, 5) Repeat movement.

28

Elite Tampa Bay

January 2014

BACKWARD LUNGE WITH FRONT SHOULDER RAISE 1) Stand upright with dumbbells at side. 2) Step backwards with one leg so that the knee of your front leg is directly over the toe. 3) Sink down into lunge while extending dumbbells up directly in front of you to shoulder height. 4) Return to original position and repeat. Remember to alternate legs.

WALKING STEP OVER LUNGES INTO WALKING ZIG ZAG LUNGES 1) Put dumbbells away for this one. Stand up straight with hands on hips. 2) Step out to lunge, but place front foot across the knee of back foot as opposed to straight out. 3) Repeat alternating legs for 10 steps. 4) On the way back, step out to lunge. This time though, place front foot completely away from the knee of back foot. January 2014

5) Repeat alternating legs for 10 steps back. Perform each of the exercise for 3 sets, doing 10 – 12 repetitions for each set. If you really want to drive up the heart rate, do 30 seconds of jump rope in between sets! For more information about starting or enhancing your current workout and nutrition program, please visit my website at www. precisionfitnesstampa.com.

ome call it “Cast Away meets Wolfgang Puck” where “shoes are optional” (Hideaways Collection), while others call it “an authentic tropical getaway” (Andrew Harper) and bestow awards (Trip Advisor Readers Choice), but regardless of how it’s defined, it’s clear The Meridian Club staff enjoy hosting guests on this private hidden gem. Beautifully positioned on a two-mile stretch of talcum-powder beach - considered by many as the finest in the Caribbean - The Meridian Club is an environmentally-sensitive private island resort ideally suited for those seeking an unspoiled, upscale but unpretentious retreat. With no automobiles, televisions, radios or telephones, guests unwind and enjoy the island’s natural beauty. Soothing trade winds ensure comfortable temperatures and low humidity while surrounding waters teem with marine life. Underwater visibility often exceeds 100 feet and there are miles of coral gardens within a five minute boat ride. Ashore, Pine Cay remains a pristine natural haven with vast open space and seven freshwater ponds, a perfect habitat for the abundant local fauna and flora. Aside from the obvious – bask in the sun on a deserted beach – guests can enjoy a variety of activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, biking, playing basketball or tennis, and the most popular … taking golf carts out to explore the island. Culinary Adventures Mornings begin with freshly brewed coffee, fresh-baked pastries and breakfast on a private screened porch, with the option to join other guests at outdoor tables on the pool terrace. In the afternoon visitors have the option of a tasty buffet lunch, often off the grill, or a more adventurous picnic lunch (prepared upon request.) The club offers only the freshest seafood - locally caught ocean fish, lobster and conch prepared in various styles. There are other options, such as steak, chops, rack of lamb, duck and Cornish hen, and the award-winning chef prepares vegetarian meals upon request. With an new pastry chef this season, the club is excited to continue the tradition of fine desserts, beautifully presented with coffee or cordials.

Spa Offerings The Sand Dollar Spa, staffed by a Balinese masseuse, offers specialty spa techniques, including massage, hot stone treatment, manicures, pedicures, and facials. Balinese massage is a highly evolved, distinctive form employing a combination of gentle stretches, deep tissue kneading, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and “qi” (energy) around your body, bringing relaxation and a sense of wellness. An ancient technique, related to the Ayurveda, the Indian holistic medical system, this type of massage is known to help with a wide range of ailments, including migraine, muscle and joint pain, sleep disorder, anxiety and depression, as well as allergies and breathing problems such as asthma which often are worsened by stress. The use of oils is calming and sensual and leaves guests feeling tranquil and serene. Fishing With great fishing only 20 minutes off shore and a boat ride that in itself is an memorable excursion, many who visit Pine Cay come for the fishing or include fishing in their visit to the island. From deep sea fishing to fishing in the flats, there is always something interesting for any level fisherman. Some take their catch back to our chef and have it prepared for the next meal, while others enjoy “catch and release” for the sport of it. Whatever your pleasure, if you plan to fish during your Caribbean vacation, many say Pine Cay is the best option. These mobile chores run the entire gamut of behavior including eating and drinking, grooming, reading maps, using a navigation system, watching a video or tending to the vehicle’s sound system. Among the deadliest distractions that any driver, regardless of age engages in is sending and receiving text messages while the vehicle is in motion.

In 2009 5,474 people were killed on U.S. roadways and an additional 448,000 were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver and 416,000. The numbers are frightening; 18% of all injuries are caused by distracted drivers. 11% of all drivers under the age of 20 were distracted drivers due to one of the classic automobile distractions. The scariest statistic is that 40% of all teens report that they have been a passenger in a car while the driver used a cell phone for texting. If you operate a motor vehicle while operating a cellular phone you and your passengers are four times more likely to be involved in a crash with serious injuries or death. Text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than that of a driver who is paying appropriate attention to the road and not engaging in texting while driving. Here’s why; sending or receiving a text message takes the driver’s eyes and attention from the roadway for an average of 4.6 seconds which, at 55 MPH is like driving the length of an entire football field without looking at the roadway. Motor vehicle crashes are the number one leading cause of death for our teenagers; no other hazard claims as many teenage lives each year. In response to this alarming statistic, the Florida Department of Transportation created an internet survey in 2010 asking people to identify the most serious traffic safety problems in Florida. Over 60% identified distracted driving as the most significant safety issue. Now after 4 years of serious consideration of this pressing concern, Florida has finally acted. On October 1, 2013 Florida Statute Section 316.305, known as the Florida Ban on Texting While Driving Law, went into effect. Florida was one of the last 4 states in the country to enact this life-saving safety

32

law—leaving just Arizona, Montana and South Carolina as the last outposts in texters’ paradise. The new law bans both texting and emailing while driving but in my opinion is not strong enough. Unlike in nearly every other state, Florida’s law is only enforceable as a secondary offense. This means that for the distracted driver must first be pulled over for another traffic infraction, like speeding or running a stop sign. The law does not apply to drivers in stopped vehicles, so if you grab your phone to check an email or text the moment the traffic slows or if you stop at a light, you can legally text behind the wheel. The fines for violating the new law will hardly hurt anyone financially. First time violators face a mere $30.00 fine, however second and subsequent violations committed within a 5 year period are considered moving violations and will assess points to driver’s licenses. The auto insurance industry will then ear mark these high risk drivers and increase premiums or drop them entirely. As a Florida Personal Injury attorney I can tell you first hand the tragedy that I have seen involving injury and death due to texting and driving. In my opinion this law should have been put into effect years ago. Think of the lives it could have already saved. If Florida is really serious about making our roads safer then it should join many of the other states and place an outright ban on all cell phone use while driving. Is that phone call or text really important enough to risk your life and the lives of others? I don’t think so.

WHAT IS THE SECRET OF

Spring Style? By Kristen Smith-Hilton Image Consultant and Fashion Stylist

E

very February millions of people from all across the world wait anxiously for the unveiling of Spring Fashions. Whether we are on the edge of our seat during New York Fashion Week, to watch the top designers unveil what will be “In” and what will be “Out”, or awaiting the fashion bibles to hit magazine stands. However you obtain and interpret the styles that will grace the red carpet, store fronts and our personal closets may be the defining factor to how this wonderful season will tell your story. As a personal fashion stylist I am often asked the same question “What should I wear to…insert event.” My answer will come, but first we must clarify exactly what event you are attending. Knowing where you are going, and with whom you will be spending this particular time will help determine how you choose to dress. Throughout the many years in Fashion I have learned time and time again, that just because it is in style does not mean that you should wear it. And a personal rule, you are never “just” going anywhere. Each time you dress it is to participate in your life, and you want to feel and look your best. Spring is a re birth season for many of us. The holidays are behind us, as are many of our resolutions. The weather is warm. We have finally begun writing the year without correction. We become, I like to borrow the word from a Disney classic Bambi, twitter pated. We want to see it all, try it all, and believe much is possible. But beware of what you “try on” with all the excitement you can make many style mistakes and spending to much money. Stylistically spring can be a challenge. With the frequent change of temperature throughout the day and evening, the first rule is 36

layers. Choose layers carefully to help you transition with the flurry of activities and opportunities as they present themselves. I find this time of year that a daily survival kit is a must. The second rule is the secret is in the tiniest of details, accessories! A bangle here, cocktail ring there can make the largest changes in your overall appearance and propriety in how you present yourself. With a few simple changes you will be the fashionista butterfly emerging from your winter cocoon. Being able to transition from carpool, time on the golf course, and into an after five event in just a few steps. Choose what you will add to your wardrobe this spring based on your lifestyle, body type and the longevity and ability to mix and match as the season progresses. Don’t get wrapped up in is IN for Spring. What is in for you? When in doubt, a quick photo can be as they say, worth a thousand words. 6 WAYS TO ACTUALLY KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S

RESOLUTION

So if you really want to see results this year, it’s critical that you set your goals with sincerity, and set yourself up for success. Read on for six practical tools for making realistic, attainable resolutions— and actually sticking with them.

I

t’s the New Year—the time to reflect on your aspirations and set meaningful goals to improve your health and happiness. Which sounds great, right? But how many of us actually keep our New Year’s resolutions past January?

Not many, according to studies. Research has found that 52% of resolution-makers were confident that they’d achieve their goals, yet only 12% succeeded. What was the secret? Those who took meaningful steps to achieve their resolutions—setting step-bystep goals or telling their friends and family, for example—were far more likely to achieve their desires than those who made no specific commitments. 40

1. GET SPECIFIC A common mistake people make is setting big, nebulous goals like, “I’ll be healthier.” Instead, make your resolution specific, with a tangible, achievable outcome. Rather than saying, “I want to save money,” determine how much, exactly, you want to save, what you are you saving it for, and what will you do once you hit your goal? Then, visualize what good will come when your goals and desires are met. What does it feel like? What does it look like? It also helps to have something simple, tangible, and positive to repeat to yourself over and over again. “I will be able to run a 5K because I am healthy, strong, and train hard,” is not only positive reinforcement, but it’s a quantifiable goal that you can check in on and make your reality. 2. WRITE IT DOWN

goals, let them go-they’re not doing you any good. Replace them with your positive mantra, instead. Write down your goals and outline the small, manageable steps you’ll need to take in order to achieve them. If you set a big goal—say, learning a language—without a step-by-step plan, it can be overwhelming and trigger frustration or negative thoughts that get in the way of your success. But by planning and accomplishing one small thing at a time, you’ll stay on track, focused, and positive.

5. GET A PARTNER Having a group, partner, friend, or professional to encourage you can be a great way to keep you going. Try finding a friend who has a similar resolution, and check in with each other every week to talk about your progress and challenges. Or, ask a family member or significant other to keep you accountable— just make sure they’re supportive and positive.

3. MAKE TIME Be sure to set aside ample time for yourself to achieve your goals. If you really want to write that book chapter, you might set aside three regular four-hour blocks during the week, and plan one day every month to track your progress. If you want to excersize more plot out time in your weekly schedule for runs and time at the gym.

You can also seek professional help, whether that’s a personal trainer to help you meet your fitness goals or a counselor who can help you tackle larger, looming issues such as low selfconfidence or a lack of direction. If you are dealing with issues of self-doubt, these can seriously get in the way of you meeting your other goals—so do yourself a favor, and address such issues head on.

4. MOVE PAST DOUBT Keep tabs on how often you “unset” your goals with your thoughts. Pay attention to self-sabotaging mind chatter, like: “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t do it.” Every thought you have is an intention. It’s normal to feel fear, doubt, or worry—but to make progress, it’s important to move past those negative feelings.

6. BE STILL You’re more likely to slip on your goals when you’re stressed or overwhelmed, so spend time every day to getting out of your thoughts and reconnecting with yourself. Try a breathing exercise, meditation, yoga, or just going for a walk. The more practice you have being still and calm, the more present you’ll be for each step of achieving your goals.

If you find negative thoughts surfacing, don’t criticize yourself, but stay in control. If your thoughts don’t support you or your

MASTER THESE STEPS AND YOU’LL BE WELL EQUIPPED TO FOLLOW THROUGH ON YOUR RESOLUTIONS FOR GOOD.

Forward Thinking Initiatives TEACHING CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP TO TEENS

H

ave you ever asked a young child what they wanted to be when they grew up and, instead of hearing a prompt reply of “doctor, fireman, police woman, dancer or teacher,” gotten a shrug or a blank stare? Can you imagine a teenager not thinking they can ever make a difference in the world? Forward Thinking Initiatives is determined to change all that by empowering teens to make a positive difference in their community. Debra Campbell, Founder of Forward Thinking Initiatives (FTI) finds it more than a little unnerving that many kids have no dreams about their future and no guidelines for a path to success. From a selfish perspective, she is downright worried about turning over our companies, our health care and our region’s economic development to this emerging workforce. For that reason, she formed FTI to teach kids in middle and high school how to start their own companies. Since you can’t seem to get kids excited when you use the word “entrepreneur” (eyes glaze over), FTI created after school programs and summer camps that would begin with the kid’s passions and present the academic pieces (shhh, science and math) in creative, project based formats. For example, their summer camp at MOSI was called Toys and Games, Serious Business! Debra collaborated with Tim Walsh, Founder of the Playmakers, a successful toy inventor and creative consultant on Toyland, the documentary about the toy industry. The kids learned first hand about how to come up with a viable idea and how to market to companies such as Hasbro. Since product development and innovation is a large part of FTI’s programs, the kids also got to create their own games as well as new Rube Goldberg machines and extreme hoops (new versions of the hula hoop). By the end of the camp, they were more than ready to present their business plans to an audience. Other themes and programs that Forward Thinking Initiatives has developed includes Playing at Work, a sports management and sports science program. They piloted Hockey Business this summer and are now preparing for baseball and football curricula. Business in the Arts, Entrepreneurial Thinking, There is Green to Be Had in Going Green andFamily Business are just some of the other programs. Not all the programs are strictly entrepreneurial in nature. FTI’s teen empowerment programs also include Kids Consult and Art

46

Not Hate, a social commentary in art program. This last program allows kids to create an original work of art about an issue of great importance to them, and an artist statement, then a YouTube is created so that their voices are heard and they can have an impact on their world. Currently, Forward Thinking Initiatives partners with MOSI, the STEM division of the Hillsborough County Schools, the Department of Child and Family Services and Coordinated Childcare of Pinellas with the program rotating among 41 locations throughout Pinellas. The big news is that FTI is partnering with the Saint Petersberg Chamber of Commerce to launch a youth entrepreneurship academy in 2014. This is a dream come true for FTI’s founder, Deb Campbell. The academy will mainstream career initiatives, teaching innovation and product development and hopefully launching student-operated businesses. The goal is to bring a top quality educational experience to all kids, whether they are gifted, at-risk, college bound or not on a traditional path to success. The FTI academy will be part of the Greenhouse, the city’s small business development center but will have a separate location downtown. Teaching entrepreneurship to teens should have real economic development impact for Tampa Bay. For more information about Forward Thinking Initiatives, you can check out their website at www.forwardthinkinginitiatives.com or call 813 760-7860.

Luxury getaway on the world’s best beach What do you need in a vacation? Comfort without fuss? Warmth mixed with refreshing trade winds? Natural beauty? Excellence in service performed at a relaxed pace with a certain charm? Then make some time for the Turks & Caicos Islands, where your pulse rate is sure to slow down. Turks and Caicos is actually made up of over 40 islands and cays east south east of the Bahamas, spanning a distance of less than 100 miles from east to west and even fewer north to south. Just eight are inhabited, each reflecting distinct natural beauty, history and culture. Most visitors spend their time on Providenciales, the perfect place to unwind, but trips to the outer islands are highly recommended if you are looking to get a better impression of this small lively nation. Scheduled air flights and well organized excursions are readily available. Providenciales’ Grace Bay Beach consistently receives accolades as the world’s best beach. It was named after Grace Hutchings, an early visitor in 1892, in honor of her beauty, style and of course grace. This pristine 12 mile beach seems to have that perfect combination of fine white powder sand, expansive vistas, constant breezes and yet no crowds. The sea colors will stay with you forever; shades of Tiffany blue, turquoise, cobalt and more; and the sunsets are not to be missed. Many of the country’s most luxurious resorts are here, making for easy movement between one world class refreshment experience to another. Of course there’s nothing like becoming a ‘local’ in your own luxury resort, and one that has received the World Travel Award for the Caribbean’s Leading Boutique Hotel from 2005 to 2010 is Point Grace, Luxury Resort & Spa. The resort is appropriately named as it sits on the ‘point’ half way along Grace Bay Beach where with it’s expanse of white sand and untamed beauty you feel like you are on your own desert island. The resort’s magnificent suites, restaurants and spa are all inspired by classic turn-of-the-century British Colonial architecture creating a West Indian setting untouched by time. The islands are a divers feast with close to shore wall drops of up to 8,000 feet. Humpback whales pass by during Spring whaling season. Nature can be found in many forms from turtles to osprey eagles. Fitness lovers will find quality gyms, classes and watersports with expert tuition. Kite-boarding, triathlons, 5/10K runs, sea-swims are all pursuits to join in. Tennis, golf and horse-back riding are all catered for, again with experts on hand. Fishing from bone fishing to deep sea fishing is world class. There is plenty to do if you are looking to be active.

World class chefs seek to impress you with their signature dishes creating a cosmopolitan fare, but Caribbean and nativestyle dishes abound with the fresh catch of the day and the country’s own Conch. Dining is everything from a simple to luxurious experience. You’ll find a huge selection of wines and drinks on offer too. Point Grace’s elegant gourmet restaurant, Grace’s Cottage, has specialized in pairing fine wines with inspired cuisine for many years now. Come, take time to enjoy cuisine at it’s best, in the best possible settings. Your body and soul have already entered a new dimension, where you feel energized but utterly peaceful. The Point Grace Thalasso Spa is all you need to further the restoration process. Treatments are European in style; Thalassotherapy using the islands natural resources and Thalgo products. The setting is truly West Indian; white washed exquisite cottages just set back from the natural beach dunes with inspiring sea views and breezes. Turks and Caicos is very accessible with many international flights. It’s just over an hour from Miami and two and a half hours from New York amongst many routes. Your first vision of the islands from the plane will be awe inspiring. You’ll finally know you are on vacation. Getting through the soon to be expanded small airport terminal is fine but a discrete courteous fast track VIP Flyers service is available; Turks and Caicos will give you the luxury you desire at every step. Those that live in the islands keep their history and culture close to their hearts, but they also move with the times and going-green, ecotourism and government-reform are all hot topics. There is certainly a pride in the islands that we do things our way, we don’t just follow others, and that gives the islands a spirit all to their own. If you chose to visit Turks and Caicos you’d very likely become one of our many return visitors, so we hope to see you very soon.
