ever mind the rain and wind there is one sure way to tell its summertime - Summer Seaside Special opens at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre. Now in its 35th year the 2012 Show continues to provide first class variety entertainment for the whole family and, along with sand in the egg and cress sandwiches, is bound to form part of the childhood memories of a seaside holiday for a new generation. Although Seaside Special is a major attraction throughout the summer holiday season there is an enormous choice of performing art across North Norfolk. From chamber music, brass bands, jazz, folk and choral concerts through an array of tribute concerts as well as original rock and pop to poetry and ‘fringe theatre’. It’s all accessible, inexpensive and more often than not away from the larger towns. Churches, village halls and community centres are providing great venues in beautiful villages. Resident or visitor you are bound to find entertainment that suits your tastes for every evening of the week somewhere across our part of North Norfolk - and close by there is bound to be a real pub with good beer and wholesome food. We tend to take for granted the freedom and convenience a car gives us, perhaps to enjoy the pleasures described above. Although the freedom a car can give is available to the majority there are still a significant number of people in our area that rely on public transport and disproportionately affected when services are reduced or cut. Cuts to long haul and local bus services have started to happen because of ‘austerity measures’. The review of transport needs in our area by Norfolk CC and NNDC must fully recognise the difficulties faced by those that don’t have the ‘luxury’ of a car in this largely rural area. Recently we learnt of the awards many of our beaches have won. Sadly other beaches are being spoiled. The beach below Vale Road at Trimingham is an example. The easy access attracts local people and increasing numbers of visitors. During the summer season dog fouling, litter and dangerous jet skiing (at best a fairly pointless form of maritime transport) will increase. NNDC please do something about these problems. Pop Up Art Gallery at Aldborough School

Pupils aged between 4 and 11, staff and parents worked for a half term creating a variety of installations which filled the new school building. ‘The whole school looked colourful and decorative’ commented Megan Rounce aged 8. In the hall, the art work included graffiti in the style of Banksy, Jackson Pollack paintings, music based on Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, an installation of a shoal of fish and hanging artwork. Along the learning street there were more installations including a Peep Hole Show of spectators at the Olympic Games (where the spectators were made out of clay) and an imaginatively decorated chest of drawers depicting travelling across the world.

n Sunday June 10th Aldborough School opened its doors, for one day only, as an Art Gallery. The ‘Olympic’ exhibition entitled ‘Movement Across Cultures’ was an idea put to the school by Mrs Lisa Kirkham, a parent. The idea became a reality thanks to the Aldborough Open Gardens Committee encouraging the school to be part of their special day, some sponsorship from Baker Rhodes, Homebase -Cromer, K Hardware, Lasterlite, Norwich and Peterborough, Travis Perkins and, of course, the school community.

Further work included Olympic Logos, a Light Show and a display of animations made by the animation club held at the school. Outside there was a wishing tree and a huge dragon!

‘If I could choose my favourite part out of all the amazing art work, I would have to say the fantastic chests of drawers. We had drawings of houses from all around the world and different ways of travelling as well as people from different cultures’ commented Bea FieldsendDanks aged 9yrs Throughout the day a steady stream of visitors marvelled at the wonderful pieces that had been created. Comments such as ‘This is all really stunning. Exceptional!!’ and ‘Wonderful creativity’ made everyone associated with the Art Gallery really proud.

Dear Editor your letters and emails The Crabline Merchants’ Place 16 Church Street Cromer Norfolk NR27 9ES editor@crabline.org

Hello there, I wondered if you could help me find/scan a photo of the old school buildings and playground at Cremer Road. I was a pupil there, quite a while ago now... Now as a primary teacher in New Zealand I would love to use an image of the school as a backdrop to a playground scene in an upcoming school production. Any chance you could help? Looking forward to your reply. Many thanks, Brigid Bloom brigidbloom@gmail.com Dear Editor On behalf of East Anglian Air Ambulance I would like to thank everyone who entered the football competition 2011-2012. Our winner this year was Chris Hopper from Briston with 12 points out of 21, he received a cheque for £365.00. There were 8 runners up with 11 points each receiving £20.00, £530.00 was donated to East Anglian Air Ambulance. I would like to thank Mr. John Turkentine of Fisher Bullen, Cromer and Fakenham, who sponsered this competition. Full details of the competition are on the Fisher Bullen Yours faithfully, Jamie Edghill On Behalf Of E.A.A.A. Dear Editor I wrote to Sanders Coaches recently and received the attached reply:

Norwich and as a consequence of under-use will also be scrapped, leaving us non-car-users stranded. I have seldom witnessed any trouble on the last bus from rudeness or drunkenness, but would like to hear of the thinking behind the decision. I have always favoured the buses over the railway but will now have to turn to them although they too, leave earlier than is practicable. Would Sanders reconsider their decision and reinstate a late bus to cover Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, if not every evening of the week? Seriously yours Brigid Warner The difficulties faced by Sanders are contained in Charles Sanders reply to Brigid below. Crabline is grateful to Charles Sanders for permission to publish his reply. Ed. Hello From April 1st Norfolk County Council cut all support of evening services after 19.15 from Norwich. The costs involved for running these services with so little usage was not acceptable to their new financial constraints. We have tried to keep at least 1 later bus running at our own cost but we will have to see if this can be sustained once winter time comes around, Hopefully we will be able to. I am sorry you are inconvenienced by these changes but your only hope is to contact Norman Lamb and other MPs along the route. At least you seem to have the alternative of the train ( which incidentally is still subsidized ) whereas for Aylsham and surrounding villages they have no alternative. Charles Crabline’s Roving Reporter h mouse is certainly getting about and has prompted a number of letters and emails, here are just a few, and his replies:

Dear Sir As a long-standing resident Church Mouse in Gimingham, I feel that I must reply to your For many years I have enjoyed travelling back article in ‘Crabline’, dated 19th May. home to Cromer on the last bus, after an (I happened to catch sight of this after one of enjoyable evening out in Norwich. We have many walkers and holiday-makers who come to enjoy the quiet beauty of our village but if it’s action you wanted you should have been in the Churchyard last Tuesday evening when nearly a hundred villagers gathered to enjoy the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee B-B-Q. You could have joined me and my family as we polished off all the left-over rolls, sausages and beef burgers, followed by gateaux and other puds. Yes, you surely got it wrong my old beauty! Gimingham is a great place to live, but we don’t go around telling too many people, for obvious reasons. And St Oscar? Well let’s say he has brought blessed relief to many of the congregation. Think on that! Yours cheesily, Dear Mr H Mouse, Roving Reporter, I refer to your visit to Trimingham, issue 247 of Crabline, 16th June 2012, and think you must have got distracted by the Grit Bins and Slow Down signs. If you had gone into our Church named St John the Baptist’s Head you would have seen our lovely Rood Screen, which incidentally has been referred to in a book published in 2011 “English Panel Paintings 1400-1558” by Audrey Baker. However, I suspect unlike your ancestor you are not as quiet as a Church mouse. If it was a livelier atmosphere you wanted your visit should have coincided with a Crib Session, Whist Drive, Craft/Knitting Session, or our Jubilee High Tea, all held in Pilgrim Shelter. Further down the coast near Beacon Hill in the era of the Napoleonic Wars there was a Signal Station from which a message could be sent to London in 6/7 minutes. Before the “Golf Ball” was erected there was a secret establishment near it which was part of the “Beam Benders” unit and but for them you might have been known as Herr Mouse. season in style on 16th June. Taking cues from the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics this, the first of the three shows that make up the Summer Seaside Special season, is named Pride - A Festival of Britain. The show unashamedly flies the flag and provides a nicely judged balance of nostalgic images and music from the last six decades as well as contemporary references.

father a stage hypnotist and mother a dancer, he was destined to become an entertainer. Having served his apprenticeship in summer seasons at UK theatres and holiday centres professional recognition came with appearances in the West End and on TV. Today his polished illusions and quick fire comedy make him a popular booking with the cruise industry. His opening performance at Summer Seaside Special confirmed he is a highly accomplished traditional, but definitely not old fashioned, variety act who quickly engaged and entertained the audience throughout the evening. Dain was very ably supported by the unique comic style of ‘local lad’ Ben Langley who has successfully transferred street performance to the stage; skilled and death defying juggling being just one facet of his performance! The glamourous Karina Grigorieva’s breathtaking hand balance and contortion act gives Summer Seaside Special a first class international dimension. Having trained with the Moscow State Circus she has travelled the world performing in major circuses and variety productions. Her astounding feats of contortion had this reviewer reaching for the pain killers. Other essential parts of good variety are song and dance. Sophie Bloom and Rob McVeigh are two rising stars in musical theatre and each has already achieved a string of TV and film credits. Both gave high quality performances across a broad range of material continued on page 9

Michael Johnson, the Olympic gold medal runner, was on his way to a club with some friends. At the door, the bouncer turned to him and said: "Sorry, mate, you can't come in here — no denim." Michael was quite annoyed at this and retorted: "Don't you know who I am? I'm Michael Johnson." "Then it won't take you long to run home and change, will it?" replied the bouncer.

from the decades covered by the show. From The Beatles and Dusty to Adele and Pixie Lott, powerful ballads and first class covers of well known hits, both displayed their versatility and their ability to engage and entertain the audience. There is also dance aplenty from the Seaside Special Dancers. The choreography of Di Cooke, also the Deviser and Director of the Show, incorporates a range of styles and pace contributing significantly to the show’s structure and creating the convincing atmosphere for the whole company numbers. The energy, precision and skill of the Seaside Special Dancers was thoroughly appreciated by the opening night audience and the ‘tour of

Britain in dance’ was a real tour de force amongst many high points in the show. The first half closed with a whole company number featuring members of Marlene’s School of Dancing who were all absolute ‘professionals’. The creative team and backstage crew are also to be congratulated for their part in creating the essential atmosphere, glitz and glamour that the Seaside Special shows are all about. If the opening show on 16th June is anything to go by the 35th year of Summer Seaside Special is set to be a vintage.

he final concert in the current series provided breathtaking performances from both musicians who displayed complete mastery of their instruments. Despite their ages both are experienced performers, both at home and overseas, and were recently in concert at Wigmore Hall, London. The first item in the programme, Pequena Czarda by Pedro Iturralde, who wrote only three compositions, is a work that enables a first class musician to fully explore the potential of the saxophone; Huw Wiggen certainly achieved this.

T

housands of families from across Norfolk will be taking part in the UK’s biggest free reading event for children: the Summer Reading Challenge. Children of all ages and reading abilities can take part at their local library by reading 6 books collecting bronze, silver and gold stickers – as well as their very own medal. The 2012 theme is Story Lab, a magical celebration of story and the imagination which is linked to the 2012 Olympics and the London 2012 Festival. Children can choose any books they like: fact books, story books, joke books

or picture books. Audio books and e-books count as well, so long as they borrow them from a library. Parents and carers love the Summer Reading Challenge because children discover the joy of reading – and children love it because it’s lots of fun. To sign up, just head to your local library at the beginning of the summer holidays. It’s completely free – and every child who joins will receive a Story Lab pack. Look out for more details in the library, including special Story Lab themed events. For library opening times visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries

hile out on the Crabbeat this week I met Mrs Carver and her beautiful baby daughter Charlie Ann. Mrs Carver was rather upset because while pushing her pram along the pavement she had run over a large pile of dog poo. This meant that before she could take her pram indoors she had to clean the wheels. So Please clean up after your dog wherever You are. The fouling of land by dogs (NNDC) order 2008 States: Anyone allowing their dog to fowl and who does not clean it up in public places will be subject to an £80 fixed penalty notice (£60 if paid within 10 days), none payment of fine will result in action in the Magistrates’ Courts. Taking care of dogs: My dog is called Buster, he is my best friend I always keep him safe when out walking. How to keep your dog safe: • Do not let your dog out on its own. • Keep it on a short lead when walking on the pavement, road or cycle path. • Keep it away from the traffic. Remember: • Some people are frightened by dogs do not allow your dog to approach strangers. • Always take a poo bag with you. ‘Bye for now. lornalaw@crabline.org

s part of the local Armed Forces Day celebrations an exhibition at Merchants’ Place in Cromer on Saturday 23 June included many of the armed forces charities. Some are better known than others, future issues of The Crabline will focus on each but the series begins with Blind Veterans UK. During WWI Sir Arthur Pearson established St Dunstans’s for blinded soldiers, sailors and airmen. Having lost his own sight he knew these young men could still lead useful and fulfilling lives. Sir Arthur’s blindness was caused by glaucoma, but as the owner and founder of the Daily Express, he was in a position to make a difference. His training centre taught important skills including typing, Braille and physiotherapy to assist the blinded servicemen enjoy productive lives beyond blindness. Almost 100 years later thousands of veterans have been helped discover a new life beyond blindness. The core belief is that the best way to adapt is by developing abilities to live independently with sight loss. However technology has made a significant difference to the options available, sports such as acoustic rifle shooting and surfing are examples that were unimaginable 100 years ago. Funded by donations St Dunstan’s decided in 2012 to change its name to Blind Veterans UK, responding to what members and supporters were telling them - people just didn’t know about the charity. Blind vetrans UK operates three training centres: Brighton, Llandudno and Sheffield. Each is slightly different but all provide training and rehabilitation, nursing and residential care and all have comfortable accommodation and state of the art facilities. All are centres of excellence. Chris Humphrey, who is partially sighted and a St Dunstan’s ‘graduate’, and his wife were staffing the Blind Veterans UK stand on Saturday. Both were fantastic ambassadors for the charity and had an infectious enthusiasm for the work and difference it is making to so many men and women. Thank you both for telling me about Blind Veterans UK. To donate, volunteer or put someone in contact with Blind Veterans UK call free 0800 389 7979 or visit www.blindveterans.org.uk

Benedetto Marcello’s Concerto in C Minor, originally written for oboe but played in this concert with the soprano saxophone which created an entrancing adagio movement. This was followed by Vocalise, written by Rachmaninoff for the soprano voice, but played on many instruments because of its beautiful melodic line which today captivated the audience. James Sherlock’s solo performance of Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C Sharp Minor, sometimes known as The Bells of Moscow, was

as anticipated, a splendid account of this popular piece. JS Bach’s Sonata in G Minor played on the soprano saxophone came next, followed by variations on Le Carneval de Venise by Jules Demerssmen, described by Huw Wiggin as ‘whacky and wild’; it certainly was. He managed to play the theme in staccato, accompanying it with groups of triplets, akin to triple tonguing on brass instruments. After the interval Cesar Franck’s Sonata in A Major, in four movement, proved to be the major work of this concert. It demanded the

highest interpretative qualities and techniques; relished by the musicians and the audience. James Sherlock chose Debussey’s First Arabesque for his second piano solo. Emotionally expressive he brought a feeling of calm to the auditorium after the dynamic textures of former works. The concert concluded with Carmen Fatsy the work of Brazilian composer Francois Borne. This was a wonderful performance from both musicians whose gusto and enjoyment of the work brought prolonged applause leading to an encore for these exceptionally fine performers.
