Greetings Parents and Families of TCS -

My name is Steve Palmer and I’m extremely honored to join the team of The Cottage School as the new Executive Director. I’m very passionate about education and I look forward to partnering with you to provide our students with a rigorous, engaging, and high-quality middle and high school experience. As the parent of a son and daughter ages 22 and 20, I recognize the importance of a strong home-school connection. Parents are every child’s first teacher and I believe that by working together, we can make sure your child’s social, emotional, and academic needs are met. Before joining TCS, I served in a variety of teaching and educational leadership roles over the past 20 years. Some of the roles I have held include classroom teacher, coach, Principal, Director, Founder and Superintendent of a number of schools. My academic background includes a Doctoral candidate in Education, a Master of Science in Educational Leadership, a Master of Science in Counseling, a Bachelor of Science in Education and minor in Business, and a Certificate from three states in Special Education and Educational Leadership and Administration. The philosophy I live by is that all children are a gift and we as educators need to teach to their strengths and cultivate their weaknesses. I also believe in helping children experience a positive and realistic perception of themselves and a strong commitment to community. I think “abilities not disabilities.” Education is all about children. Finally, I want to congratulate Dr. Jacque Digieso for her 30 years of exemplary leadership of The Cottage School. I am excited she will remain with the school as a board member. I look forward to working with Dr. Digieso, as we continue to Honor the Past…Celebrate the Present…Embrace the Future! In Education –

Steven T. Palmer

Summer 2015 Dear Parents and Students, I hope you are enjoying your summer break. Plans for the 2015-2016 school year are underway and very exciting. I want to welcome all of the new families and say hello to the returning families. Steve Palmer has taken the helm as the new Executive Director. Lauren English will be stepping into the role as Middle School Assistant Principal. She will still be teaching, but I am excited Lauren has accepted the additional role. Thank you for your time and attention to the parent survey. Based on your feedback, we will be continuing to focus on technology in the classroom and the use of technology. Teachers will still be using ClassWeb for the posting of notes and class assignments. If you have a returning student, their login and password will remain the same. If you are a new member of our community, you will receive your login and password the first week of school. Please be sure your child is able to access ClassWeb. In preparing for the new school year, I wanted to give you some information that will help you in your own preparation. I am looking forward to another amazing year. On-line forms! We have gone paperless on certain forms. The Vital Student Information Form is online. This form needs to be filled out by all parents, new and returning. We have also gone on-line with the PE Order Form and the Elective Classes selection. Review the elective classes and their descriptions then make selections using the drop down boxes. Please select the class your student would like for choices one through three. Classes will be assigned on first-come first-serve basis. Please go to the website and take a minute or two to complete these forms by July 20, 2015. If you have any questions about how to complete these forms, please contact Molly Switzer. Enrichment Classes will be held July 27-31. These classes are a great way to prepare your student for the 2015-2016 year. Please see the flyer for information about this opportunity. Middle School Orientation will be considered the first day of school for your student. Orientation will take place on Friday, August 7, 2015 from 8:00A.M. to 12:00P.M. The day will start in the RCC (the downstairs of the Administrative Building on the far end of campus). We ask that one parent attend the morning session of the Orientation. Please park in an available spot and come in to the RCC, come prepared to complete any outstanding paperwork, pay for supplies and PE uniforms, sign up for the After School Program or Sports teams, as well as attending a general information meeting. I will release the parents as soon as I can. Orientation will be a day that students will learn the location of their homeroom, classes, locker assignment and receive their schedule. Please be sure that your student brings his/her school supplies. Please see the middle school supply list.

The first full day of classes will be August 10, 2015. Please be sure to have your student here by 8:00A.M. at the latest. We will have staff members here as early as 7:00A.M. for supervision. With the start of the new school year comes new traffic congestion, so please plan your morning commute accordingly. For New Families, PAC will be hosting a New Parent Evening Reception on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 from 6:00P.M.-7:30 P.M. Come have some light refreshments and meet some of the returning families, PAC Board and the staff. Please be sure to RSVP to Stephanie Johnson by August 7 at stephaniej@cottageschool.org or call 678-250-5125. Parent Association Committee (PAC) will hold its annual Parent and Family Social on August 20, 2015 from 5:30P.M. to 7:00P.M. Please be sure to RSVP to Stephanie Johnson by August 14 at stephaniej@cottageschool.org or call 678-250-5125, so we have enough time to plan food for everyone. The Parent and Family Social is a great way to set up carpools, meet new and returning parents, volunteer for a committee, and just have fun. Be sure to let Stephanie know how many people to expect from your family-brothers and sisters are welcome. For families interested in carpool opportunities, please note this when you are filling out the on-line Vital Student Information form. This information will be gathered and available during registration and orientation. Please follow the Medication Policy for those students who take medication during the school day. Please read the MS procedures in the Policy and Procedure Manual carefully and be prepared to follow the procedures listed. We request that you deliver a couple of ‘emergency’ doses to Libby Swinson so that we have medication here to administer should your child forget his/her medication. To ensure that all students receive the prescribed medication and dose, please provide the school with your student’s medication in a prescription bottle with the medication information and dosage clearly indicated on the bottle. Our Lunch Program is provided by Wholesome Tummies again this year. Please see the flyer with information on the program and get signed up. If you prefer to pack a lunch, be sure it is labeled with student name. There are microwaves and a refrigerator for student use. We will again offer an After School Program to all students. This program offers parents maximum flexibility for supervision. Students that elect to participate can have supervision from 3:00P.M. to 6:00P.M., Monday through Friday. Please see the flyer for more details. We will again be using Remind.Com for emergency announcements and any school closings. To sign up for the 2015-16 school year, please take a minute to send a text to’81010’ and put ‘tcspar’ in the message section. We will use Remind.com only for emergencies or to communicate time essential information. The Cottage School has a Summer Reading Program. This summer we are encouraging students to read at least two books. We encourage you to prompt your child to select a book from List A which all are based in the state of Georgia and one book from List B. The reading log, book recommendations and summary form can be found on the TCS parent portal. Encouraging reading helps your children in all areas of school. The 2015-2016 Student Policy and Procedure Manual is also available on-line in the “Parents” section of the website. Please review this manual with your student prior to signing the on-line form.

The planner is designed so that it includes a calendar. Please encourage your student to use the calendar to mark special occasions, project due dates, sports practice, games, appointments, etc. This is an excellent organizational skill to cultivate and your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Please be sure to get all forms filled out and returned to the business office by mail, hand delivery or scan/email to Donna Barwick at donnab@cottageschool.org by Monday, July 20, 2015. Completing these forms and submitting them on or before July 20th will assist in having a smooth Orientation Day, as well as, assisting in your child’s afternoon elective choices. Have a safe and enjoyable summer! Sincerely,

Julie Crudgington Middle School Principal

Dear TCS Parents: We encourage you to take part in one of the most successful tax credit scholarship programs in America-Georgia Goal! 

Tens of thousands of Georgia taxpayers made history in 2015 – consuming all education tax credits in just ONE day!

GA Goal is a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) in which Georgia individual and corporate taxpayers can contribute in exchange for a state income tax credit and possible federal charitable income tax deduction. GA Goal then uses the contributions to award scholarships to students from K-12 public schools so that they can attend the private schools chosen by their parents.

Seize the Opportunity! 

Contribute to GOAL – at no cost to you – and allow deserving Georgia students to attend The Cottage School.

This program is an invaluable benefit for our school and community. With your contribution to GOAL, we are able to:  Increase the amount of financial aid that can be offered to new students  Preserve more of our existing financial aid to assist families already enrolled  Increase enrollment  Increase tuition income  Increase the funds available to improve educational and other offerings  Enable the school to further its mission by reaching more families desiring a TCS education GOAL is now accepting 2016 tax credit applications! 

Please apply for a 2016 tax credit by completing the form online at www.goalscholarship.org.

Payment is required 60 days after DOR approval, which will be mid to late March of 2016. If you have any questions, please contact CFO Bob Crenshaw at Bobc@cottageschool.org or 770-641-8688. Thank you for your support of The Cottage School.

Material List – Middle School 2015-2016 Materials for school have always been a concern. To assist with organizational issues, The Cottage School uses the following COLOR GUIDE for each specific academic discipline. We ask that you attempt to follow the same color schemes when purchasing your materials.     

English or Language Arts-Red folders or binders Mathematics-Blue folders or binders Social Studies-Yellow folders or binders Science-Green folders or binders Electives-any color not listed above

The organizational system can be implemented in any way to help your student be successful - individual 1 inch binders or an accordion file. If your child has difficulty with organization, a “one-stop-shop” system works best where all of the student’s necessary items are stored. If you use the accordion file, please do not purchase 3-ring binders too, as this complicates the organizational system. The following is a list of standard items you can prepare for your student:       

Pack of highlighters, colored pencils or markers Pencils Pens Calculator (we recommend the TI-30XA) Make sure you place your student’s name on the calculator with either indelible ink or an engraver. Glue Sticks Scissors for contracting Flash Drive

Summer 2015

Dear Parents, The following pages contain information regarding the physical education and athletic programs for the next school year. The first matter concerns PE uniforms. Of course, our policy as outlined in the Student Handbook requires Cottage School issued uniforms for all physical education and “athletic elective classes. Please go on-line to place your order as soon as possible to ensure that we have enough inventory for our first day of school. The second form (Pre-participation Physical Examination) contains two sections. You must complete the front of the form yourself, while arranging for a doctor to fill out the other two pages. This form must be returned for students to gain eligibility for all Cottage School athletic teams. The Athletic Department is required by the Georgia Independent School Association and the Atlanta Athletic Conference to retain these forms on file for all students who participate in athletics. The third form is the Parental Consent for Participation in Interscholastic Athletics. This form must be completed by parents or guardians and returned to the school. Only students with signed consent forms will be eligible to participate in Cottage School Athletics. This form needs to be updated each year for returning student athletes. Thank you for your attention to these matters. Sincerely, Richie Briggs Athletic Director The Cottage School 678-250-5130 richieb@cottageschool.org

Promote Cougar Pride Support the Athletic Booster Club in 2015-2016 Over 65 percent of our students participate on 18 athletic teams at The Cottage School. Our athletes and coaches need your help as team parent supporters. Our gym creates additional opportunities for Booster Club activity (help with concessions, scoreboard operation, and tournaments to name a few). Please consider an investment in the success of the TCS athletic programs. Your open support of any amount (Checks or online payment to TCS – Booster Club; to the business office) allows the athletic department to cover both unexpected necessities as well as “nice to have” but unbudgeted items, such as coaches polo’s, hall of fame plaques, and archery equipment. The students are vested; please help reinforce the principles being set forth by being involved too. Watching and cheering is great but helping is superb and a necessity! PAC PICKS Dear TCS Families – Did you know that the Parent Association (PAC) dues are included with your tuition? Many of you may be wondering exactly what PAC is all about and how you can be involved. PAC provides much of the volunteer manpower for programs and initiatives at The Cottage School. PAC volunteers help support TCS through campus beautification, staff appreciation activities, administrative support, hospitality, program enhancements, TCS Founder’s Day celebration, parent social events, the newly formed mentor program, educational opportunities and more! Take a minute to fill out the volunteer form, we will find the right position for YOU! The most important thing is for your student to see you involved in their school. Your involvement shows them just how important their education is to you. There is a volunteer position for everyone; whether you work full-time, part-time, live around the corner from TCS or have a one hour + commute each day. Welcome to our new families! We are so glad to have you here at TCS and hope you will join us for the New Parent Reception on August 12 at 6pm. This is great way to learn so much more about TCS and meet people. And, we look forward to seeing all families, new and returning, at our first all school event, the PAC Family Social on Thursday, August 20th from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm in the Cougar Center. This is a great opportunity to see old friends and make new ones. Mark your calendar now! If we can answer any questions, please email Brenda at brendahall1@msn.com or Becky at beckythelen@gmail.com. It is going to be a great year at TCS, thank you in advance for your support. Best Wishes and Go Cougars – Your 2015-2016 PAC Co-Presidents Brenda Hall and Becky Thelen

Dear Parents:

The Cottage School strives to create and ensure a safe environment where your student can flourish both academically and socially. Part of ensuring your students safety to accomplish these goals is to do our best to make certain The Cottage School is a drug and alcohol free campus. The Cottage School has a history and culture of trusting our students and parents to inform us of any known illegal substances present on campus. We believe this has served us and our community well in the past and will continue to serve us well as we move forward. In addition, we would like to add an active prevention to assist us in our mission to keep our students and campus drug free. In doing so, we are taking a proactive position regarding the presence of prohibited substances on our campus. The Cottage School will renew our contract with Interquest, Canine Detection in order to actively prevent the use or presence of illegal substances on our campus. Interquest uses mild mannered, scent trained dogs, such as Golden and Labrador Retrievers, Springer Spaniels and Weimaraners to detect the presence of prohibited substances. The canines will search the outside area around cars, lockers and bags. If the canine detects drugs or alcohol, the applicable student will be asked to open the designated area for a confidential search of the area. If anything is found that creates a concern for the school, the substance will be turned over to an administrator and the parent will be contacted for a conference. Canine Detection dogs are unable to discriminate between legal and illegal drugs. Students who have over the counter medication in appropriate doses or prescribed medication in the prescription bottle will not be penalized. The Roswell Police Department will be notified when students are in possession of illegal or unidentified substances. The Cottage School is very excited and pleased to continue this additional step in keeping our community and student body drug and alcohol free. If you have any questions or would like further information, you can view Interquest’s web page at www.interquestk9.com or contact your respective principal.

Sincerely, The Cottage School
