A hundred years in the making, the National Wildlife Refuge system is a network of habitats that benefits wildlife, provides unparalleled outdoor experiences for all Americans, and protects a healthy environment. The National Wildlife Refuge System, within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, manages a national network of lands and waters set aside to conserve America’s fish, wildlife, and plants. National wildlife refuges provide habitat for more than 700 species of birds, 220 species of mammals, 250 reptile and amphibian species and more than 1,000 species of fish. More than 380 threatened or endangered plants or animals are protected on wildlife refuges. Each year, millions of migrating birds use refuges as stepping stones while they fly thousands of miles between their summer and winter homes.

The Central Flyway (New Mexico highlighted in yellow) Map by Duck Unlimited ducks.org

The Central Flyway, an expanse of mountains, rivers, plains, and shores spanning the Rocky Mountains, Great Plains, arid Southwest, and western Gulf Coast, comprises more than half the landmass of the continental United States, before extending into Central and South America.

Fall Flight Festival - Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge The visitor center will be open each Sunday in November from 9am to 4pm for the traditional annual Fall Flight Festival featuring a 4.5 mile self-guided auto drive. This tour allows visitors to enjoy the vast spaciousness of short-grass prairie in areas of the refuge not typically open during the rest of the year. Migrating waterfowl will be limited but there will be grassland birds along with wintering raptors.

People who enjoy wildlife-associated recreation other than hunting and fishing will have more opportunities in New Mexico, as NMDGF continues its Gaining Access Into Nature program. GAIN offers outstanding wildlife viewing and other activities on State Game Commission owned Wildlife Management Areas, lands that normally are open mainly for hunting and fishing. GAIN will not impact traditional hunting and fishing activities. GAIN activities include wildlife viewing, photography, hiking, bicycling, skiing, snowshoeing and horseback riding. All GAIN participants will be required to have permits for the appropriate season and activity. Some wildlife areas will be closed to all activities at certain times to protect wildlife. However, GAIN will not restrict activities such as hiking and fishing in areas that normally are open. GAIN access permits are required to participate in GAIN activities on participating properties owned by the State Game Commission. A $4 Habitat Management and Access Validation (HMAV) will also be required. “Hey! It was such an awesome experience. My pilot’s name was Jim Lynch and his balloon was the Whirlawayit was such a pretty balloon. It was a nice morning and you couldn’t hear anything but the breeze pass and helicopters in the distance. We fortunately floated North and had passed over the Rio Grande river where I captured some nice shots of other balloons passing over. When lower to the ground, we waved and exchanged “Good Mornings” with a few residents of the Rio Rancho area. It was great. I didn’t want to come back down, lol”. SIDE

TRIPS

Santa Fe to Los Alamos & Bandelier National Monument

This side trip starts in Santa Fe and takes you on a short but interesting trip to San Ildefonso Pueblo, the “Atomic City” of Los Alamos, and Bandelier National Monument.

El Parasol - Pojoaque, NM Photo credit - http://www.elparasol.com/pojoaque/

We always like to start you off with a good breakfast option. We recommend El Parasol in Pojoaque - El Parasol has been in business since 1958. There must be a good reason!

Blue Window Bistro - a perrenial favorite lunch spot - Los Alamos, NM Corridor staff photo by Marc-Paul LaRouche

For a satisfying lunch experience we recommend the Blue Window Bistro. The Blue Window is open weekdays Mon - Fri for lunch. http://labluewindowbistro.com. If you are out on a weekend try the Pajarito Brew Pub and Grill. www.pajaritobrewpubandgrill.com or even the new Smith’s Marketplace grocery store, they have a wine and beer bar, food counters, coffee, and more!

Black Mesa - San Ildefonso Pueblo Photo credit - www.sanpueblo.org

From northbound St. Francis Drive, (US 285) take NM 502 west to San Ildefonso Pueblo. Visit the Pueblo artisans, and take a walking tour of the Pueblo. “San Ildefonso is one of the best known New Mexico Pueblos because of the famous black-on-black pottery which originated there and which was revived in the nineteen-twenties. ... Before long, the outstanding quality of San Ildefonso pottery became known. It was then that the famous black pots were revived, primarily because of Maria Martinez.” - excerpted from http://www.indianpueblo.org/19pueblos/sanildefonso.html

History Display - Bradbury Science Museum - Los Alamos, NM Photo credit - www.lanl.gov/museum/

After your visit to the pueblo, head west on NM 501 to the city of Los Alamos. The Bradbury Science Museum is a must-see - even if you have been here before. Not only does this museum highlight the Manhattan Project and the science and technology of Los Alamos National Labs, but there is also an exhibit of the archaeology of the lab grounds. http://www.lanl.gov/museum/ .

Bandelier National Monument - Los Alamos, NM Photo credit - www.nps.gov/band

After lunch head to Bandelier National Monument. For directions from Los Alamos and for more information about the area visit the Los Alamos Visitor Center at 109 Central Park Square (505) 662-8105 or http://www.visitlosalamos.org/. During the winter you do not have to take the shuttle from White Rock, and can drive into the monument. Enjoy the walks and climbs to see the Ancestral Puebloan structures.

Bandelier National Monument - Tsankawi - Los Alamos, NM Photo credit - www.nps.gov/band

To see more of the ruins on Bandelier Nattional Monument take a short drive to Tsankawi Ruin located on State Highway 4 about 12 miles from the main monument. www.nps.gov/band Check with the rangers at the Bandelier Visitor Center for directions.

Just up the street is the Los Alamos Historical Society Museum which has temporarily moved out of the Fuller Lodge Guest Cabin to the Teen Center across the street, next to the pond. There will be extensive renovation of the Guest Cabin during 2016. Heading back to Santa Fe consider dinner at “Gabriel’s Food of the Southwest and Old Mexico”, featuring their famous tableside guacamole arguably the Best in the West!
