In Las Vegas the 10th annual Rough Riders Motorcycle Rally will take place Friday-Sunday, July 24, 25 and 26. Read the entire Summer Guide and mark your calendars so you don’t miss a day of fun this mid-Summer 2015.
About the July issue
We start out the July issue with a story from Pecos, New Mexico. The Tarnoff Art Center in nearby Rowe, NM has orchestrated a special mural project with a colorful and informative painting on two sides of Adelo’s Town & Country Store in downtown Pecos. Gershon Siegel brings us “A Tail of Three Kitties” - you just have to read it! On page 12 (the Back Page of the Summer Guide) we bring you a photo story on “Shearing Days” at Que Sera Alpaca Ranch. Our “Side Trips” page offers a day trip starting in Las Vegas, then visiting Fort Union National Monument and the town of Mora (then back to Las Vegas for dinner and ??? Marty Gerber gives us another of his insightful blog pieces “Good riddance to creativity” and Kim Leonard tells us of her recent experience at Second Street Brewing at the Railyard in Santa Fe. Finally, the Kids Page features a listing of outdoor movie venues.
Here is an update from Milicient McFarland, author of her June commentary “Botanic Garden - or not?” about the Ortiz Mountain Preserve near Cerrillos, NM. The story referred to a meeting that would take place on June 4, 2015 in the Cerrillos Hills State Park Visitor Center between the docents of the preserve and representatives of Santa Fe County Open Space. “The meeting with the county folk went well. They took information from the docents for about two hours, focusing on procedures and organization, etc. They are working on a Transition plan to present to the (Santa Fe County) Commissioners on June 30th. Supposedly, they will be contacting us for another short meeting before the 30th. I haven’t heard anything yet. One aspect that needs to be clarified/emphasized is that the Ortiz Preserve is NOT a site that can be open all the time to the public. This is a remote site, The only access is over a steep, two mile road owned by LAC Minerals, who still owns property surrounding the 1,350 acres of Preserve. Plus, I have been told that not all of the abandoned mines were filled in by the Bureau of mines, so it would be dangerous for folks to be wandering around there unescorted. And then there is the issue of people coming in (if the gate was open all the time) with dogs or on horses or with guns, etc. Not good. “ Editor note: we will keep you posted as we learn more. Classic motorcycle show returns to La Tienda in Eldorado for the fourth year.

On Sunday, June 21, 2015 (Father’s Day) from 10 am to 3 pm at the La Tienda shopping plaza in Eldorado at Santa Fe, Motorado Motorcycle Club of Santa Fe will present its 4th Annual Motorado Classic Motorcycle Show. Whether you are a motorcycle enthusiast or just looking for a fun afternoon, this is the place to be on Father’s Day. Nearly one hundred classic motorcycles from all over New Mexico as well as neighboring states will be on display. The bikes will be judged and awards presented to the best in their categories. This year the show will feature British marques, a class of British racing bikes. There will also be a new entry this year for a special class of Honda motorcycles, the CBX, which was a special 6-cylinder bike that was built by Honda for a few years in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Admission is free and open to all ages. You are encouraged to bring your camera to photograph these rare and beautiful motorcycles and chat with their owners to learn all about each bike. Many sponsors will display their products and services. The Motorado Motorcycle Club is putting on this event to promote interest in vintage and classic motorcycles, and to help a good cause. The club has sold sponsorships to individuals and businesses who wish to promote the show and help with the benefit. Socrates said, “By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you’ll become happy; if you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.” Today’s version of this wisdom amounts to, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” No doubt the cynics among us will try to find a friend whose life has given him tequila. But let’s face it; a trip to “Margaritaville” won’t help a bad marriage or any other situation needing serious attention. Denial, of course, can sing an alluring, if rather short Siren song, but it leaves us tied to mast, as it were. Much of life requires we negotiate hurdles or otherwise accommodate one bothersome adjustment after the other.
It’s true these excursions are not major expeditions into parts unknown. But left to my own inclinations, I might be forever content to bicycle up and down Herrada Road. After all, it’s just been paved and has been nominated for the best engineered two-lane in Santa Fe County. Still, the beloved is not impressed and insists an occasional change of scenery is good for the both of us.

Botanic Garden . . . or not? by Millicent McFarland
When is a Botanic Garden not a garden? When it is the site of former gold mining from the 1880’s , high in the Ortiz Mountains above the Village of Cerrillos.
The Ortiz Mountain Educational Preserve, off Goldmine Road, is 1,350 acres of amazing habitat— both plant and animal. Historic artifacts abound, including ruins of a hotel, a three-hole outhouse, and remnants of the first NM rail line. It is also considered a habitat for wild animals, including black bear, mountain lion and eagles. A protected colony of Townsend Bats live there, using the mine tunnels for winter hibernation. The Preserve also contains sacred sites of the Santo Domingo Pueblo. But this unique place is currently off limits to the very taxpayers who paid $380,00 in 2007 to make it County Open Space. Santa Fe Botanic Garden, who has managed it since 2001, abruptly abandoned the site, leaving the County to create a management plan. Just like the former gold companies who stripped the gold from the land and left with their profits, SFBG took taxpayer money for land they had received free and then deserted the Preserve.
In a May 20, 2015 article by Thomas Ragan in the Santa Fe Reporter, Clayton Bass, CEO of the Santa Fe Botanic Garden, admitted that 80% of the $380,000 was used to finance the Museum Hill expansion. The Ortiz docents, all volunteers, who have been leading tours and hikes at the site since 2001, are waiting to see if the County will keep the Ortiz accessible to the public. For fourteen years, visitors have been driven up the steep two-mile access road to the site to learn the history, geology and biology of this unique place. People of all ages and physical ability have been able to experience this high altitude refuge, reveling in the peace and beauty—because they were driven in private cars. No accidents were reported in all this time. The County has been giving its tacit approval to these drives for the past seven years. Santa Fe County Open Space will meet with Ortiz docents on Thursday, June 4 at 2:00 in the Cerrillos Hills State Park Visitor Center to discuss management plans. Let’s hope the County maintains the same level of accessibility as we have had for the past fourteen years. Near Tijeras NM on Route 66 is a musical road. Rumble strips have been placed on the roadbed to play a song if you are driving the speed limit. Watch for 2 small blue signs and drive the posted 45 mph and you will hear the tune! The singing road was paid for by National Geographic. It is a permanent addition to Route 66. Check our website for the name of the tune, we want it to be a surprise for some! 364 Highway 66 East near Tijeras. Eastbound from Albuquerque get off I40 at exit 170 for NM333/Rt 66. Drive east for about 3.5 miles. Just after NM33/Rt 66 cross to the south side of I40 watch for 2 blue signs between Mile 4 and 5. Only musical while driving east.

Lisa’s Truck Center - 820 Central Ave. in Moriarty Central Ave is part of the old Route 66.
Our first stop is Lisa’s Truck Center and Cafe in Moriarty. To get there, take I-40 exit 194, then turn left (East) onto Central Avenue. This is the Old Route 66 highway. Follow Central for about 3 miles. Lisa’s is located on the right. The cafe serves the entire menu all day. The menu offers everything from biscuits and gravy to breakfast burritos to a huge order of Huevos Rancheros! Breakfast at Lisa’s should hold you until a late lunch. Lewis Antique Auto and Truck Museum 905 Route 66 in Moriarty, NM
Just across Central Avenue from Lisa’s and east about a block you will find Lewis Antique Auto and Toy Museum. This a great place to walk off your meal and discover hundreds of old cars and trucks, in various stages of disrepair, on the grounds surrounding the indoor garage and museum. Inside the garage are the restored vehicles including Model T’s, 57 T-Birds and a huge wall of old toys. This is a great place to visit, and be sure to bring your camera. If you enjoy cars and old things, you could spend hours here! The folks who run this museum are wonderful and admission is by donation.

After visiting the Soaring Museum you may be ready for some lunch. You can drive west on Old Rt 66 all the way to Edgewood NM. We suggest a locals favorite, Katrinah’s East Mountain Grill. Take NM 344 north (under I-40) into Edgewood and about 4 miles north on NM 344 to Dinkle Rd. Lunch options vary and the breakfast menu is served until 2. Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood, NM
After lunch head to Wildlife West Nature Park, also in Edgewood. To get there take the frontage road west from Hwy 344 (the same road where you found Katrinah’s Restaurant). Follow the signs along the road. This park is a non-profit wildlife preserve dedicted to native wildlife and ecology. The park is run by volunteers with the help of the New Mexico Conservation Corps. In addition to the rescued wild animals that live in the park, many other educational and entertinment events are held throughout the year. The park holds a Chuckwagon Supper and Show on Saturdays from June 20 - August 29, 6:00 p.m. Visit their website http://www.wildlifewest.org or call 505-281-7655. The park is open mid-March to the end of October, 10 am to 6 pm, and November to mid-March from noon to 4 pm.

When you have seen all you can take in at the Lewis Antique Auto and Toy Museum, just look across the street. You will see a large metal building. It looks like a warehouse, but it’s actually another museum. This is the US Southwest Soaring Museum. The museum is filled with new and used gliders and other soaring apparatus. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. The museum is open to tjhe public. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. The sign on the door says to to call them if no-one is there during regulaar hours, and someone will come down and let you in to see the museum.

The Santa Fe Studio Tour 2015 has expanded to two artfilled weekends. A free, self-guided tour open to the public, visitors can choose to tour any number of the 44 open studios and discover the original art – paintings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics and other unique works -- 68 Santa Fe artists. Many artists give demonstrations of their craft, share techniques and discuss what inspired their work. On Friday June 19 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm the tour begins with an Artists Reception at the Preview Gallery exhibiting artwork by all participating artists. The Preview Gallery is available for preview over the first weekend at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. It is an opportunity for the public to view all the artists’ work and map out their weekend’s tour.

Café Fina by Anna Soeiro Recently my well-traveled father and stepmom came to visit and of course I had to take them to my favorite eateries. Cafe Fina was at the top of my list. Conveniently located between Santa Fe, where I work, and Pecos, where I live, I always enjoy stopping in for coffee to go or sitting down over quiche, Cloud Cakes or a flakey fried fish sandwich. My family members both ordered the Rueben and they were blown away. “The best I have ever had”! Dad reported as his wife nodded in agreement. “We know a few restaurants that could learn a thing or two from these folks!” Cafe Fina is located at 624 Old Las Vegas Highway in a former Fina gas station, You can get there also by taking I-25 to the Clines Corners/Eldorado exit 290, which is the junction with US 285. They offer brunch Mon-Fri 7 am to 3 pm, Sat-Sun 8am to 3 pm. They are open for dinner on Thur, Fri and Sat from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Morris Would I have a choice I would stay here among the soft murmur of the forest and the transient, fleeting passages of animal life. In truth, I have no choice. But as the Sandia Puebloans claim this is where their spirituality is nurtured–so mine, so ours. Thus, to our benefit, this resource must be respected. We take with us some of the energy that is given by the mountain. We return to our world, perhaps with a sense of renewal after listening to the mountain. It is early evening now. Thunder rumbles in the distance, the sound muted amidst flashes of heat lightning. Slipping beneath the lingering clouds, the last rays of silver light illuminate the tree tops, just for a moment. The noisy woodpecker is now silent, or may have moved farther away. Underground, surely there is a stirring in the burrows prior to nocturnal foraging. Dad’s Night Out I feel a little sorry for dads. Listen. Hear me out. I know that moms generally handle the lion’s share of housework and child rearing in families, but moms, out of necessity (or desperation) usually know how to creatively do “Girls Night Out”. Getting together for a book club, mani/ pedi or glass of wine and tapas with the girls is something we ladies plan. Dads, however, have a tendency fall into a rut and go to the same sad tavern, meet a regular group for poker night or play a round of golf (again) with business associates.

I went on a Sunday for Happy Hour and had one of their daily $3.00 “Beery Specials”, a La Cumbre Hefeweizen, and the two for one appetizers, Sweet Tater fries with a walnut/honey mayo dipping sauce and Cabeza de Ajo, a roasted head of garlic with melted jack cheese, tomatillo salsa and crostini slices. Our estimated food cost for this month without adding any more birds is $4200. If you break that down it’s $140 a day, and we need your help! Please give what you can so that we can continue giving these birds the care they deserve.
