Brutal, over-crowded and violent: that is the reputation of South America’s prisons. And with good reason. “When I came here I was shaking”, one prisoner admitted. “All anyone knew about the place were the massacres. There were people who’d cut your head off without fear. It was the law of the jungle. As soon as you entered you were told: see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing”. But change is coming to El Salvador’s prisons. Slowly. How? Yo Cambio. I change. Peadar King is a Cork-based human rights documentary film maker. For the past decade, he has highlighted human rights issues in almost fifty countries across the globe His latest book What in the World? Political Travels in Asia, Africa and The Americas (2013) recounts some of those experiences.

The ninth series of What In The World? starts on RTÉ One in November

GODS / BOGOWIE Lukasz Palkowski | Poland | 2014 | 120mins 1815 | GATE

This gripping, dramatic biopic - the most successful movie at the Polish box office last year - tells of the early career of Zbigniew Religa, a famous Polish cardic surgeon who performed the first successful heart transplant in 1980s communist Poland. Gods is a portrait of an extraordinary human being who dared to challenge the harsh existing rules under extremely adverse and complicated conditions. The film is full of emotion and tension and Tomasz Kot is sensational as the chain-smoking surgeon Religa. The film sweeped all trophies at the last Polish Film Awards including six Eagles for Best Actor, Director and Film.
