Rector’s Letter

Dear Parishioner,

CHURCH ROOF We need to act on the findings of the recent Quinquennial Report which strongly recommends “that the roof needs to be replaced before the next inspection due in 2022”. This is a major practical and financial project, which we have to undertake, costing approximately £250,000. The roofing defects consist primarily of slate slippage caused by nail sickness (nails corroding, slates disintegrating at nail holes), breakdown of lead abutment flashings and porosity of the parapets all due to ageing. The lead valley gutters showing signs of splitting are also reaching the end of their useful life.

The intensity of the inclement weather we are now experiencing compared to that at the time the church was first constructed is also leading to moisture ingress which is becoming increasingly visible on the interior walls. This will be a major project for St Columba’s and is one which we must undertake to enable us and future generations to continue worshipping Almighty God in our beautiful church.

Damage to interior walls and ceiling of church due to moisture ingress from the roof.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? As we celebrate our Patronal Festival on Sunday 10th June by giving thanks for the life of St Columba, we all have an opportunity to give back something to God of what he has first given us, as an expression of our thankfulness for the many blessings we receive from our parish church. Please place your voluntary donation in this Roof Fund Gift Aid Envelope and place it on the offertory plate in church this month or return it to the Parish Office.

ROOF FUND Your Select Vestry recently established a Roof Fund with an initial transfer of ÂŁ10,000 from the 2017 surplus income to get us started. In recent weeks, a few parishioners have given generous and significant donations and this fund now stands in excess of ÂŁ20,000. Given the size of the fundraising task ahead of us and the different financial demands faced by us all, we are extremely grateful for all donations, no matter how large or small. I commend this Roof Fund to your prayerful consideration and support. Yours in His Service,

PARISH PRAYER

God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care; but narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hatred. Here may the tempted find help, the sorrowing receive comfort and the penitent be assured of your mercy. And here may all your children renew their strength and go on their way in hope and joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Bishop Thomas Ken 1637-1711 Readers and Intercessors: If you cannot read or lead the prayers on the appointed day, please arrange a swap with someone else on the rota and let the Churchwardens know. We are always delighted to add new names to the Rota of Readers and Intercessors. If you would wish to serve your church in this way, please contact The Rector (02890 471514). The readings are from Year B of the Revised Common Lectionary and are printed on our parish website: www.coiknock.org

BIBLE READING NOTES’ DISTRIBUTOR Throughout the past thirty years, Evan Preston has, in a most diligent and conscientious manner, distributed the Bible Reading Notes to those parishioners who subscribe to these most helpful notes from the Bible Reading Fellowship. In addition, Evan has collected the annual subscription of £13.50 from each parishioner. I personally find the notes very helpful as part of my daily devotions and wish to thank Evan for all his work and support in this important part of our parish ministry in St Columba’s. These notes are published three times a year and contain Bible readings and comments for each day. They are written by a regular team of contributors from a wide range of church backgrounds. I am very pleased that Joan Madill has agreed to succeed Evan and wish her well as she commences her new responsibilities with the September – December edition of the Bible Notes. I encourage parishioners to subscribe to these Bible Notes. Please contact Joan for further details (02890 656591). The Rector.

MUMS AND TOTS Look into the hall on a Friday morning at a very happy scene of children trying out all the different toys and mums/grandparents/carers chatting over coffee as they look on. It has been a very good season and this year we will close for the summer on Friday, 22nd June and we plan to restart on Friday, 7th September. I trust everyone has a restful summer. Anne

NEW MUMS AND TOTS LEADER Anne Clarke has contributed so much to our most successful Mums and Tots Group in St Columba’s over many years as their highly respected Leader. Each Friday Anne looks after this growing and developing Parish Organisation which is an important part of our parish’s outreach into the local community. It is always a great joy to see parents, grandparents and childminders making their way down the hill to the Church Hall with the toddlers, for two hours of activities, songs and refreshments all carefully prepared by Anne and the ladies from the parish, who assist in so many ways. I thank Anne for all her hard work, great attention to detail and support as leader. Anne now wishes to retire as leader and I am delighted that Joyce Stevenson has agreed to succeed Anne. Joyce brings a great wealth of experience to this position and I wish her well in this important parish role. I am very pleased that Anne will continue to assist with Mums and Tots as a member of the “Team”. The Rector

SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday, 3rd June

The children will be participating in many ways in the All Age Worship service before receiving their prizes. It would be lovely to see the church full of children on that day to enhance the service. Numbers in Sunday school have been encouragingoften between 20 and 25 children attending. Thank you to all parents for bringing them on a regular basis. Sunday school has now finished until September. I would like to thank all the teachers and helpers who give of their time so readily - Alan, Rachel Leacock, Louise, Rachel Albery, Helen and Michelle. At the Parish Table Quiz in January expectations were high in the round ‘Children’s Literature’ with two former teachers at our table. We had read all the books but the colour of the Gruffalo’s nose and those pesky seagulls towing the Giant Peach had us beaten. This got me thinking of all the children’s books I have enjoyed as a child myself, sharing with my own children and with pupils over the years. When we downsized recently I came across a set of Heidi books I had particularly enjoyed and much later my own daughter read them too. Growing up in Tyrone my experience of mountains was of the Sperrins which I could see from my bedroom window. When I did eventually visit the Alps the Alpine villages were not unlike those of my childhood imagination. The Rector’s Easter Vestry address had ‘ vision’ as the theme and reading widely surely gives us the ability to think and form opinions.

Thought for the Month

We take being able to read for granted - most of us would not remember how we actually learnt to read. I was privileged for the last twenty one years of my teaching career to specialise in supporting dyslexic pupils, their parents and teachers in all our Belfast primary schools. It was such a delight when pupils ‘cracked the code’ and could delve into books previously closed to them.

Yvonne Robb

I marvel at how fluently and confidently our young people read the lessons and prayers at our All Age Worship and Family Communion services in St Columba’s. They are a credit to their families and to our Church family. In Zambia, in 2012, the St Columba’s team visited Chambishi school where the children had few books but were so keen to learn to read. The Mothers’ Union Literacy and Development Programme has enabled approximately 144,000 people to learn to read in developing countries thus empowering individuals to work in their communities. Soon Henry will leave the Rectory to work with Jengana bringing literacy and numeracy skills to the street children in Nairobi. May they have a successful trip. I am presently reading one of Tony Macaulay’s autobiographical books. We enjoyed Tony’s visit to Mothers Union in March when he read an extract from his books bringing them to life. How I wish I could recall and recount my memoirs as well as he has! Let us be thankful for the gift of reading and remember those who do not have the opportunity to read or do not have access to books. Our sincere thanks to Yvonne for sharing these ‘Thoughts’ with us. The July/August ‘Thought for the Month’ will be written by Stewart Beckwith.

Hospital Visiting The Clergy would appreciate being informed if parishioners are in hospital, going into hospital, are being transferred or if they have been discharged, and will be pleased to offer them pastoral support. This will allow for better use of clergy time and resources, allowing them to visit as many people as possible. Please do not assume that they already know this information. Please telephone the Rector (9047 1514) or Canon Ken Smyth (9145 8706) to enable them to take careful note of the details. Thank you.

Clergy Parish Visiting It is always a great privilege for the Clergy to visit parishioners in their homes. If you would like to request a Clergy Visit, please telephone the Rector (028 90471514) or Canon Ken Smyth (028 91458706). In addition to requested Parish Visiting, the Clergy will be visiting parishioners in the following districts during June: Rector Canon Smyth Burghley Mews Cabin Hill Gardens Cabin Hill Park Cairnburn Crescent Campbell Chase Campbell Park Avenue Casaeldona Rise Castlehill Manor Castleview Cottage Gardens Castlehill Road Cherrytree Walk Cherryvalley Gardens

PAUSE I should have written this article on Monday when the sun was shining and the birds were singing. It was summer then! However, we are back to normal for this time of year - cold and wet. At least the plants in the garden are happy particularly my 'wild flowers.' Fortunately those of us who either regularly or occasionally 'pause' for coffee or lunch appear to be waterproof, windproof or both. This month we will meet on: Wednesday, 6th June in Cloud Nine, Newtownards at 10.30am for tea/coffee. Friday, 29th June in Hillmount Garden Centre at 12.30pm for lunch. If you are free on either or both of these dates please do join with whoever is there. You will be very welcome. If you require more details or help with transport please contact me. Eileen 11

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST. COLOMBA We have attended St. Columba's Church for virtually all our married life and have always wanted to know more about the Saint and his widespread geographical connections. Even earlier, in 1955, Kyleen had been impressed when the Rev. George MacLeod visited her student group and shared his enthusiasm for restoring St. Columba's Abbey in Iona and using it as a centre for Christian ecumenical relationships. It has since grown with world-wide links, aiming to pursue justice and peace and to work with others who share the same vision and purpose. The Iona Community welcomes visitors, singly or in groups, to be part of the many events organized by their permanent staff. Sharing with others the rhythm of monastic life while staying for a few days is a restorative experience enjoyed by many. To find out more about what is offered visit www.iona.org.uk In May this year we booked a cruise round the western isles of Scotland which was scheduled to let us visit the island of Iona - but it was not to be, as bad weather made it unsafe to land at their small harbour. However, our daughter Anne who lives in Scotland, arranged to take us there in September. It involved a long drive to Oban, a ferry to the island of Mull, a short stay there and a further ferry to Iona - all, of course, again dependent on the weather. This time all went well, we arrived in time to attend the Sunday service in a packed Abbey church and took part in the communal communion, sitting in the pews. Afterwards there was tea and coffee in the cloisters, at which we were invited to take a biscuit, break it and share it with someone who we did not know, as a lead-in to further conversation. At this stage we passed on one of our St. Columba's magazines for the Community's library. Afterwards there was plenty of time to learn more about Columba, his foundation and its subsequent history, with excellent guide-books and audio-tapes. He was born on 7 December 521 at Gartan, near Church Hill county Donegal, studied for the priesthood under Finnian of Clonard and founded a monastery in Derry. Leaving Ireland in 563 he settled in Iona and founded the monastery there. His voyage with twelve followers in a curragh (coracle) was famously commemorated by Canon Barry of Hillsborough about fifty years ago, with a replica trip. The buildings of Columba's day would have been made of wood, though there is a rock beside the present church, on which he is said to have sat, while writing and keeping an eye on his monks. St. Columba died on 9 June 597 and for many centuries his bones were regarded as the greatest treasures of the monastery, attracting a steady stream of pilgrims. The most striking early relics are four high crosses of 12

c. 700 or 800. The present church and cloisters date from c. 1200 (with Romanesque architecture), to c. 1400 in the Gothic style. After worship, perhaps the most important activity of the monastery was copying and illuminating religious texts. Certainly the most celebrated of these is the Book of Kells with the four Gospels, and dating from c. 800. This was a period of regular Viking raids and for safekeeping the Book was sent to Ireland, to Kells, County Meath, and subsequently ended up in Trinity College. After the Reformation, activity in the Abbey gradually declined and the buildings became more and more ruinous, but there were concerned people, including the Duke of Argyll, who in 1899 transferred ownership to an Iona Cathedral Trust and it is now looked after by Historic Scotland. lona was certainly inhabited as far back as the Bronze Age and had a farming population when Columba and his monks arrived, so they were able to be self sufficient. For the visitor who has more time, it is well worth visiting the island's white sands, beautiful beaches and exploring generally. Curiously, the following Sunday we were with our other daughter Susan in the Gartan area of Donegal, but it must be said that the real memorial to the Saint is the Abbey on the island of Iona. Kyleen and Richard Clarke

Thank you to all who supported the Coffee morning with the Young Families Group. We had a lovely morning with intergenerational participation. The play house and craft activities were popular with the children and it was encouraging to see the adults enjoying some time to chat. We hope to repeat this venture.

Mums in May “In Mary Sumner’s footsteps”. This year, as part of the triennial fundraiser to support the work of Mothers’ Union in local and global communities, we will take part in a number of activities to help us meet our financial commitments to ensure the continuation of very worthwhile projects. We can all take part in this important work by purchasing and completing the fireside quiz, £1 per entry, or joining others in September for a “Walking Weekend”, sponsored of course! Some members of the committee are already dusting off their walking shoes! Yours in fellowship. Barbara 13

YOUNG FAMILIES COFFEE MORNING Thank you to all who came to the Coffee Morning on Saturday, 28th April in the Church Hall, which was jointly hosted by the Mothers’ Union and Young Families organisations. It was lovely to see so many young families attending and there was a great buzz in the hall with all enjoying the delicious home baking that was provided by the ladies of the Mothers’ Union. The children enjoyed the colourful arts and crafts and had great fun in the play area. Everyone was very well looked after. The sum of £350.80 was raised for church funds. With such a great success, the Young Families and Mothers’ Union groups hope to join up again for another fundraiser, maybe in October. I will keep you posted. Thank you again for your continued support. Emma

MEN’S CLUB Well that’s it, all done and dusted. Hard to believe we have already finished another year in the life of our club. It proved a successful year all round for us. Our Annual General Meeting was held on the 23rd April, chaired by the Rector who holds the position of Club President. A successful meeting culminated in the selection of the new officers and Committee for next season. I am delighted to announce the appointment of David Beattie as our new Chairman. Paddy Malone retains his role as Treasurer. John Robb continues as Secretary, Dr Billy Nelson is the new Club Captain and will be assisted by Geoff Launchbury (Vice- Captain). Alan Rogers remains as Chaplain as does Jack Dunlop in his role of Auditor. The two committee members appointed were Mark Laverty and Jim Stevenson. All officers will have a busy year ahead as we prepare to celebrate our 60th Anniversary. Full details of which will be advised in due course. On the 27th April we ended our programme for the year with our Annual Dinner and Prizegiving. The attendance on the night numbered 29 members, family and guests. The venue once again was The Coast in Holywood where we were served with an excellent meal coupled with good service and pleasant surroundings. Many thanks were given to the staff present who looked after us and helped make it a great evening. I would like to thank The Rector and his wife Caroline for presenting the prizes on the night. Heartiest congratulations go out to all the prize-winners and runners up in all the various competitions. John

We will now have some time to relax and think of new projects. It is super when we have any visitors join us on a Monday morning as we are delighted to meet other people whether or not they come regularly. Please feel free to drop in any morning we are meeting. LADIES GUILD My grateful thanks to Eleanor for the following vivid account of Yvonne's visit and thanks also to Jennifer Beattie for her wonderful photographs. The Guild meeting on 18th April had as the speaker, Yvonne Mc Kee, recalling 'My Quilting Journey'. Yvonne began her story with her leaving home to commence teacher training at Stranmillis. Having been an Organ scholar in Armagh she found herself seated beside a more senior student called Joe McKee and so that story began. On finding that teaching was not for her disposition Yvonne joined the police rising to the rank of Inspector by the time of her retirement which coincided with the restructuring of the service. A need to find new interests led to her reviving an interest in sewing and a visit to purchase fabric for patchwork cushions resulted in the purchase of not just fabrics but a sewing table, designs and assorted accessories for use in quilting. Purchase of suitable premises, which could accommodate classes and with room for a quilting machine, saw the opening of Quilters Quest on Woodstock Road. The shop is now closed but an on-line business, which is overseen by Yvonne and her daughter Claire, keeps the quilting process to the fore. Yvonne has travelled frequently to mainland UK, R.O.I and the U.S. to participate in exhibitions, workshops and competitions and has at least five trips planned for this year. She has also been on a 'Quilting Cruise' through the Caribbean, Panama and California. Throughout her talk Yvonne showed many examples of her work, explaining fabrics, designs and quilting techniques. The room was a blaze of colour evoking much admiration and comment from the audience. Joan Madill received a lovely letter thanking us for our latest supply of stamps to the Leprosy Mission. ÂŁ6,000 was raised from the sale of used stamps, a significant amount, so please continue to save the stamps, this time from your summer holiday postcards. I have just heard on the News that the record for the warmest early May Bank holiday has been broken so could this have been the beginning of a long hot summer?? Imelda

LADIES BOWLS On 30th April the Ladies' Bowling Club ended the season with tea and scones at 'Neill's Hill'. We were joined by the Rector who presented two new trophies kindly donated to the club by Phyllis Newton. One, for the highest overall score for the year was won by Fiona Elliott. The runner up, also presented with a trophy, was Hazel Reid. The second new trophy was presented to Eileen Anderson and Audrey Griffith who won the Pairs Competition. The members very kindly presented me with a gardening token. It was quite unnecessary but I do appreciate their thoughtfulness. We are grateful to the members of the Men's Club who lay the mats us for each week as without their help we would not have a club! Helen

RAILWAY AND MODEL CLUB Big date for your diaries: Saturday, 16th June. We will be having our Open Day down in our big new room. Entrance free, with tea/coffee and biscuits for all visitors. We will be open from 10:00am to 1:00pm. If you have always wanted to drive a model railway train, then this will be your opportunity......no age limit!!! In early May we had a talk from Charles Friel of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland. Some visitors also joined us for a really enjoyable and informative evening. RPSI are a wonderfully active organisation, doing so much to preserve our Railway Heritage. Their museum, at Whitehead, is well worth a visit. The tunnel, in our last article, is now having trees planted, and a number of walks and viewing points are being added. It will be in place for the Open Day. We will also have two 'n' gauge and two '00' gauge layouts, with a Battle of Britain airfield scene and a harbour layout all in our big new room. Please do come and visit us. In the meantime...Keep 'er rollin'. David 19

NEW YOUTH ETC. LEADER We welcome Jonathan Martin as our new Youth Etc. leader who succeeds David Kelly in this important parish role. By way of introduction Jonathan has supplied this personal article about himself and his family. My wife Carol-Anne and I, along with our sons Christopher (4) and Peter (2), have been attending St Columba’s for over 5 years, ever since we moved into the area. However, this was not the first time I had met John, having been a parishioner at St Ignatius, Carryduff since I was a boy! I still have a connection with St Ignatius as I am an Explorer Scout leader there, which I have been involved in for over 15 years working with teenagers from 14-18 years old. During the early years of being a Scout Leader I also became a Duke of Edinburgh Award leader and have helped numerous youths from Carryduff scouts and local schools attain their bronze, silver and gold awards. I really enjoy being a Leader and working with this age group so am looking to forward to using my knowledge and experience with the Youth Etc. group here at St Columba’s. There will be a Youth Etc. activity at the end of June following all the examinations. Further details will be published in the Pew News.
