CHS athletes represent Worthy bowlsadversaries meet on the greens

Worthy bowls adversaries Paul Kershaw and Tadgh Waugh took to the Golfie greens on Saturday and fought to the very end in their Singles Championship match.

Waugh led for 19 ends and the difference between them varied from five shots on the sixth end to just three shots on the 16th, still in favour of Waugh.

At one stage the scores were 13-all; a valiant effort from Kershaw brought the game to a 19all draw again on the 23rd end; and by the 26th end, it was 22 points each.

Talk about tenacity, neither player was ever going to concede defeat.

Finally Kershaw sealed the deal with a three point win on the 28th end and won the final end to finish as a +1 victor which takes him through to the next round. It was an absolute thriller of a game with none of the spectators taking their eyes off of the green.

Cobar High School’s Maddie Bruce, Ashley Cousins, Harry Cousins, Eli Hodges, Cassidy O’Sullivan and Sarah Morley competed in the Western School Sports Assoc Secondary Athletics trials on July 28 against other athletes from across the region. The Cobar contingent competed in long jump, triple jump, javelin, and 200m sprints. Eli finished 1st in his javelin throw and Sarah recorded 2nd triple jump and both have now qualified to compete at the State Carnival in September. ▪ Photo contributed

Dartaholics dominate and decimate

The Golfie Dartaholics continue to dominate the local darts competition and last week they recorded another comprehensive 10-1 win.

Last week they decimated the RSL Dingoes 10-1 and the previous week the Dartaholics had a 10-1 victory over Empire Barflies.

Golfie Dartaholics were well served by their high scorers Craig Jones who threw 125 and 100; John-Wayne Josephson (113, 100 100); and Jason Collier (100).

The RSL Dingoes also had some high scorers including: Brett Miller 140,121; Waylon Ward 140,100 and Robert Childs 113.

In last week’s other matches, Golfie Gophers finished as 8-3 winners over Empire Barflies and RSL got the better of Golfie Spearchuckers to win their game 6-4.

Hundreds and high scorers were: Golfie Gophers Daniel Duell 140 and Aaron Jones 100; Empire Barflies Craig Youd 180, 130; RSL Tony Brown 135, 121, 100, Don Roberts 100, Kyle Roberts 100 and Nathan Thornley 102, 100; Golfie Spearchuckers Robbie Cummins 115, Rodney Lovegrove 120, Darryl Curtis 125, 112 and Dick Tulloh 100, 100.

The highest score of the week was 180, which was thrown by Craig Youd and the highest peg out for the week was 112, recorded by Daryl Curtis.

On the social bowls front on Sunday morning outright bragging rights went to Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Allan Gardoll.

The trio handed out a massive +26 thrashing to Doug Hudson, Keith Meen (visitor from Forrest Lake, Brisbane) and Greg Clark.

A cracker of a start on the first end by team McLeod (which put them up by +7 from the get go) pretty much upset the rest of the bowls cart. Unusually Team Hudson only held the mat for three out of 18 ends played.

The runners-up of the day with +10 were Alan Knight, John Goonrey and mighty Mick Harvey. They beat Gerard Livingston, John ‘Shark’ Daly and visitor Gale Meen who ‘chalked them up’, with her second bowl so impressive it traversed two rinks to put chalk to bowl (and helped to earn her the George the Giraffe Award).

In the last triples game a stellar effort by Bian Smith, Tony Polack and David Thomas was rewarded with a +5 win over Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond, Karen Daly and David Kershaw. The Second
