Thank you to everyone who has already confirmed their commitment to continued Membership of the Club – the initial response to our membership renewal has been very positive, for which we are most grateful. We have enjoyed a busy start to the the completion of the Banquet Hall refurbishment project, both on time and on budget. The feedback we have received has been very positive, with countless compliments on the venue’s fresh new look. On the Membership front, we have already welcomed in excess of 150 new Members, and initial indicators suggest that retention targets are well on track. Forward conference and banquet bookings are looking strong, as are wedding bookings, with 74 ceremonies and 23 receptions already confirmed for 2019. As usual, the Club’s calendar of events has proven popular, with all events well attended. Most recently, the Club hosted the Writers Festival, which was a resounding success; it really was a pleasure to see so many people enjoying the weekend. On the subject of large events, please ensure you save the date as the Club’s increasingly popular Wine Show by the Bay will take place on Saturday 22 June. To date we have 50 booths confirmed, along with a range of masterclasses and dining options for you to enjoy. Please note that the Club will close on the following dates: Easter Weekend: 19 to 22 April inclusive ANZAC Day: 25 April WA Day: 3 June Thanks once again for your continued support. Regards, GARY ELLIS General Manager

Why is violence against women endemic, and how do we stop it? Every two minutes, police are called to a family violence matter. Every week, a woman is killed by a current or former partner. This is Australia’s national emergency. Violence against women is preventable. It is not an inevitable part of the human condition. It’s time to create a new normal. It is time to stop the slaughter in our suburbs. Chaired by Professor Robyn Owens, UWA Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)

Philosophy involves thinking about some of the big questions we ask during our lifetime: Does God exist? Do the sciences tell us the truth about the world? How can we say what we mean? What are emotions and how are they relevant to our lives? This Feast of Philosophy, chaired by Dr Nin Kirkham, UWA Chair of Philosophy, will tackle these big questions and more over delicious tasting platters and wine!
Time: 6.00pm–8.00pm Venue: Club Boardroom Price: $55.00 Price includes individual tasting platter, selected wine and soft-drink.

Did you know that we are essentially more bacteria than human? And that the microbes in our gut are responsible for 90% of the messaging between brain and gut? In this ‘journey to the centre of your guts’ you will find out how gut microbes combined with our diet have a profound effect on our immunity and inflammatory markers and discover what impact food and lifestyles have on our physical and mental health.

Dialogue is the high-octane fuel that drives the story forward. Good dialogue, which means interesting, realistic and authentic to the character speaking it, will supply much of the story’s drama. It reveals and expresses rather than shows or tells. At its most basic level, good dialogue makes the story fly; makes the narrative interesting and enjoyable to read. Good dialogue should leap off the page. How to make that happen is the subject of this workshop.

Writing Dramatic Dialogue
What is consequentialism? What is utilitarianism? Is utilitarianism the best moral theory? At this Philosophy Feast we will discuss the benefits and the limitations of the utilitarian approach to ethics. We will look at alternatives, and highlight the practical implications of adopting the utilitarian approach to ethical decision making.

A BLACK SWAN AND SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY CO-PRODUCTION
Convocation recognises international innovation The Convocation has recognised and awarded two UWA graduates for their entrepreneurial contributions to international innovation.
The Torrents
The two winners of the Convocation IQX Fellowship 2018, valued at $1000 each, were given the opportunity to hot desk alongside industry innovators for six months in Convocation’s newest coworking space at UWA IQX. The award recipients – Dr Rafael Medeiros de Souza and Fiona Bettesworth – are working on projects that will benefit Australians and our international partners.
by Oriel Gray Directed by Clare Watson Starring Celia Pacquola
Rafael graduated in 2017 with a PhD entitled ‘Quantitative Analysis of 4D Seismic and Production Data for Saturation Estimation and Fluid-flow Model Assessment.’ He established a company, Georaf Australia, which provides geoscience and engineering solutions for Australian businesses. The company develops software solutions for the oil and gas and precision agriculture sectors. His company is working towards establishing joint ventures with other startups in Brazil, and is currently outlining contractual agreements to integrate his expertise on global projects, while offering services to the Australian and Brazilian industry. “The opportunity to join WA’s most exciting innovation and coworking space will offer an invaluable opportunity to develop high-end geoscience and engineering solutions to the industry,” Rafael said.

A graduate of 2014, Fiona is passionate about building the bilateral relationship between Australia and Indonesia through tourism. She is establishing a social-entrepreneurial tourism venture, ‘Real Indonesia’, that connects curious, conscious travellers to authentic travel experiences beyond the tourist strips of Bali.
CONVOCATION’S BIKE RIDE FOR CANCER, MND AND YOUNG LIVES The 200km ride was completed by the Warden last October, and we must acknowledge the amazing support given by immediate past DVC C&E Prof Kent Anderson. Kent provided the funds to fight cancer. The challenge was to raise some extra dollars for the other causes and another $5,000 was donated. The initial aim had been for $1 per member of Convocation, and we fell well short of that, but showed our best responses come from those closest to us. The shirt worn throughout the ride paid tribute to the Perkins Institute, Doug’s mother (MND) and son (Young Lives Matter), in a moving and at times tough weekend. Thanks go to all who supported the ride through donations or cheers and encouragement along the road, none more vocal than Doug’s wife Jill. The strength of Convocation’s network lies in its connections across the whole 150,000 or so members. Building on that, another ride might just raise over $50,000, or we could support our students and graduates into the workforce.
CONVOCATION’S CORRIDOR DISPLAY Club Members will have seen the new Convocation screen in the corridor leading from the Club Café. Convocation will display its members and activities on the screen with the theme of Connect, Communicate and Celebrate. Convocation Council contributes many activities to the University. We will introduce the members of Council to the Club’s Members. It will be a live and captivating feature for visitors to the Club.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to connect with the IQX community, to seek advice on ‘Real Indonesia’, and also to pay it forward and give back to the community. “Working on your own business can be lonely and a struggle at times, so working in a space with like-minded people will be fantastic,” Fiona said.
CONVOCATION FACTS
Warden of Convocation, Dr Doug McGhie, said Convocation contributed $100,000 to the restoration of UWA IQX, formerly Nedlands Park Masonic Hall, and is delighted to offer UWA graduates the opportunity to supercharge their enterprises through collaboration with UWA researchers and students.
• As a community and network of graduates, Convocation forms the electorate for elections of members to the UWA Senate and the Council of Convocation
• The membership of Convocation comprises all 150,000 graduates of UWA
