2023 Kentucky Derby Party Hat Winners

We are thrilled to announce that our four state-of-the-art Pickleball Courts at Yacht Harbor Village are now open for play! Our opening ceremony was a grand success, featuring an exhibition match with some of the most renowned tennis players of all time, including Ivan Lendl, Mikael Pernfors, and Tobias Svantesson, who have made the transition to Pickleball. Our very own club member Sylvia Whitehouse also participated in the event. You can now book your Pickleball courts at your convenience, either through our member website’s “Book a Court” feature or the new member mobile app. The courts are accessible daily from 8:00am to Dusk.

Our Wednesday Happy Hour at the Conservatory Restaurant has been a tremendous success, and we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported the event. If you haven’t yet joined us for the fun, please do so on Wednesdays from 4:00pm to 7:00pm to enjoy happy hour drink pricing and a Lite Bites Menu. Moreover,

the golf team has organized a 9-hole golf event or clinic for Golf members on Wednesdays, which will lead you right into Happy Hour. We have included schedules of the Lite Bites menu offerings and golf events in this newsletter. In the coming weeks, we will begin hosting Friday night dinners, and we hope that this event will be equally successful.

We are thrilled to announce that almost 700 members have downloaded our new member mobile app, which offers quick access to booking tee times, court times, restaurant reservations, and ordering pizza or sushi to-go. To download the app, please follow the instructions provided here

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the nation; however, for those new to the game, getting used to some of the rules can be challenging when first learning how to play. Let us go over a few of some of the important ones.

SERVE

The server’s arm must be moving in an underhand upward-arc when the ball is struck and hit diagonally cross-court. In addition, contact with the ball cannot be made above the waist. You are also not allowed to have the head of your paddle above the highest part of your wrist at contact.

“Tossing” the ball up before serving is also not allowed, even in keeping with the previously mentioned elements. What is interesting is that it is a “drop serve.”

You are permitted to drop the ball and let it bounce before serving. In this case, none of the restrictions above apply according to the rules of USA Pickleball. The serve must also land past the Non-Volley Zone; otherwise, it would be considered a fault.

NON-VOLLEY ZONE AKA “KITCHEN”

The Non-Volley Zone is commonly referred to as “the kitchen.” It is the area of the court within seven feet on both sides of the net. Volleying is prohibited in the Non-Volley zone. It is a fault if, when taking a ball out of the air or volleying, the player steps into the Non[1]Volley Zone, including when the player’s momentum causes them or anything they are wearing or carrying to touch the Non-Volley Zone or the lines of the Non-Volley Zone. This rule prevents players form executing smashes from a position within the zone. A player may legally be in the Non-Volley Zone however any other time other than when volleying a ball

TWO-BOUNCE RULE

When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, followed by the serving team letting the next shot bounce as well, thus allowing two bounces. After the ball has bounced once in each team’s court, both teams may either continue to play the ball after a bounce or volley the ball (hit the ball before it bounces) for the rest of the rally.
