CLINICS & SUPERVISED PRACTICE

Practice makes perfect. Our golf professionals find new ways to create learning moments with events and one-on-one training. Whether it’s your swing or your putt, our team is here to help.

INTRODUCING GOLF LEARNING CENTERS

Walnut Cove recently opened the first Golf Learning Center at The Cliffs. In 2024, centers will also be opening at Mountain Park and Keowee Springs allowing members in every region the opportunity to use high-resolution software that breaks down a swing from multiple angles while a high-tech mat records pressure points. At Keowee Springs, the Porch will revert to a teaching facility equipped with a club-fitting space and hitting bays. At Mountain Park, the new building will be constructed at the Practice Facility. In addition to high-tech software, these facilities will provide enclosed spaces for year-round instruction. For a sampling of clinics and supervised practices, contact the Director of Golf or Head Golf Professional at your home club.

HANDICAP INDEX ELIGIBILITY & LIMITS

HANDICAP AND TOURNAMENT POLICIES

All players must have a current Handicap Index with a recognized Association. A current handicap is one where the player has a minimum of three (3) posted scores in the last 6 months. The Professional Staff of the host club will verify all handicaps for members and guests who are not on The Cliffs Handicap Roster. Players with no established Handicap Index must submit a minimum of three (3) scores. Players unable to meet these criteria will play as a 0.0 Handicap Index. New or recreational golfers should consult their local professionals for guidance on establishing or creating an appropriate Handicap Index. The host Professional Staff has the final decision on a player’s Handicap Index for any event.

TOURNAMENT HANDICAP INDEX & PLAYING HANDICAP

The host Professional Staff will determine the date of Handicap Indexes used for each Tournament. For multiround events, the same Handicap Index will be used for all rounds. Each player’s Playing Handicap will be determined based on the format of each round. Handicap allowances will be published before the start of the event and will follow USGA recommendations. The Tournament Committee reserves the right to modify the Playing Handicap of any player before or between rounds. The Professional Staff will post all scores (when applicable) on the day of play with a designation of “C” for Competition.

THE CLIFFS HANDICAP COMMITTEE

The USGA charges The Cliffs Handicap Committee with the primary responsibility of seeing that players turn in all acceptable scores for peer review and making certain that each player has a Handicap Index reflecting potential ability. The Cliffs and the Committee strive to make the game of golf enjoyable for all members, regardless of skill level, while maintaining the structure of the handicap system to allow competition on an equitable basis. Our goal is to be more inclusive so players of differing abilities can compete on an equitable basis.

SCORING

If a player starts but does not complete a hole, or is conceded a stroke, that player shall record the score they most likely would have made, with Net Double Bogey as the maximum score for any hole. The most likely score is defined as the number of strokes already taken plus, in the player’s best judgment, the number of strokes needed to complete the hole from that position more than half the time. If a player does not start a hole, no score shall be recorded - the GHIN system will calculate an expected differential using the 10 - 17 hole method described below.

When to post a score:

• If 18 holes are played, the player shall post an 18 hole score.

19

• If 9 holes are played, the player shall post a 9-hole score.

• If 10 to 17 holes are played, the player shall post hole by hole score for the actual number of holes played. GHIN will automatically complete the remaining holes based on the player’s handicap index to create an 18 hole differential for the day.

When not to post a score:

• You have played as a single.

• You played fewer than 9 holes.

• Playing more than one ball frequently or when you knowingly will not be abiding by the Rules of Golf.

• A format where you don’t play your own ball all the time (i.e. a scramble or alternate shot).

PLEASE NOTE: It is very important that you let the golf shop know if you are playing a non-postable round so they may note it on the tee sheet for that day.

Failure to post a score:

The USGA requires the Handicap Committee to monitor postings. The Cliffs Handicap Committee is comprised of volunteer members from each of the facilities. To help members post timely and to maintain an accurate Handicap Index, the Committee sends a friendly “Did you forget to post your score?” reminder when it appears you have not posted. Score monitoring is divided into two 6-month seasons: Nov. 1 - April 30 and May 1 - Nov. 1. Not posting a score within the 3-day grace period will result in a “Failure to Post” notice from the Handicap Committee. Failure to post a second and third time will be followed by reminder letters as well. If, during a 6-month season a fourth “Failure to Post” email is required, the Committee will then exercise the option to penalize the player’s Handicap Index which includes a penalty score equal to the lowest differential in the player’s record at the time of posting (based on the recommendation of the USGA Handicap System Section 71.b). With the start of each new period, letter reminders are purged from the player’s record. A member who receives two (2) or more Penalty Adjustments will require evaluation by the Handicap Committee and repeated infractions could lead to withdrawal of the player’s handicap. The Handicap Committee may notify the member verbally or in writing/email. A member may appeal to the Handicap Committee for remedy or reevaluation. To correct a score that has been posted to your handicap incorrectly please contact cliffshandicap@gmail.com.

MAJOR TOURNAMENT AND LEGACY POLICY

For the major annual Member/Guest and Member/Member golf tournaments Full Golf members will have priority access to sign up for the event for the first 14 days at their home club. Full Golf Members at the six reciprocal Clubs may register after that period. Legacy members may register 14 days after that time (20 days after registration opens). Full Golf members will have priority access on all waitlists before Legacy Members.

Legacy Members may play as a guest in the major Member/Guest tournament OR as a member in the major Member/Member tournament but may not do both in the same calendar year. If a Legacy Member elects to play as a member for the year, they may play in both tournaments if space allows.

All other priority registrations for non-major tournaments are at the discretion of the General Manager, Director of Golf, and/or Head Golf Professional.
