WO family generations and a €1.65m investment are to be lost from Doolin.

As reported by The Clare Echo last week, An Bord Pleanála overturned a decision by Clare County Council to grant planning permission for the construction of a new pub and restaurant. Having emigrated to the US over a decade ago, MJ Queally had hoped to return to North Clare to live and work while also creating employment.

He outlined to The Clare Echo that “veracity of objections” have caused heartbreak and should be scrutinised more.

Both he and his daughter Emily had planned on returning to Doolin if the development was given the green-light.

“That site is a gaping hole, I was keen to give back.. The original idea was to create 20 jobs with €1.65m invested into it, that will go elsewhere now”.

Queally maintained that Doolin needs innovation and competition within the local economy. Since the publication of last week’s article in this paper, he admitted there has been “overwhelming support” for him to continue to pursue the development but warned that citing Doolin’s deficient wastewater system “sets a massive precedent”.

BEACH rescue facilities need to be linked to 999 services, an elected representative has stressed.

Commencing dialogue between Clare County Council and the voluntary emergency service was at the heart of a motion put forward by Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) at a recent meeting of the local authority.

The end goal of these discussions would be the establishment of an off peak beach rescue in Lahinch.

Water safety in Clare is administered by the Clare Water Safety Area committee under the auspices of Water Safety Ireland, Director of Physical Development Carmel Kirby reminded the West Clare councillor.

Kirby added, "Lahinch currently has a voluntary rescue service whose volunteers are members of Clare Water Safety and are all trained as beach lifeguards

by Clare Water Safety," which provides a year-round voluntary service.

She detailed that the County Council is "fully supportive" of the organisation and has given financial support annually plus storage space.

She concluded, "We are also working with Clare Water Safety to provide a new site for a new purpose built facili-

ty for training and storage of rescue equipment.

“It is hoped the project can commence along with the upgrade of Lahinch Seaworld in the coming months".

Praise was extended to the Rural Development Directorate for the redevelopment of Lahinch Seaworld

by Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG).

"I'm not who you're talking about with Lahinch Rescue, there wasn't a group for last four or five years," he said in response to Ms Kirby but stressed, "It's all about collaboration".

"It is my understanding that the Irish Coast Guard mobilised the services for coast guard rescue. I'm sure they have the contact details," the Director of Service replied.

Concluding the discussion, Cllr Lynch highlighted, "It is important that we have facilities linked to the 999 service".

He said that the Beach Rescue in Lahinch "hasn't been operated in a number of years" but that the Surf Rescue was new.

Railway line closed as Ballycar floods

LOODING at Ballycar has prompted the closure of the Limerick to Ennis rail-link, writes Paraic McMahon.

Iarnród Éireann confirmed that the Ennis to Limerick is to "remain closed until further notice due to flooding at Ballycar". The first instance of flooding at the location dates back to 1826 according to Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) who hails from Newmarket-on-Fergus. A further section of the railway line at Mooghaun is also flooded.

RPS Consulting in May 2019 were appointed to develop a solution to the regular flooding problems at Ballycar which was closed for 110 days in 2014 and 140 a year later. Rail commuters must now travel by bus from Sixmilebridge to the county town.

In November 2018, Clare County Council, Irish Rail and the Office of Public Works (OPW) agreed to work in conjunction with one another to fix flooding at Ballycar.

Speaking in December at a community forum in Newmarket-on-Fergus, Clare TD Joe Carey (FG) stated, "There is a turf war between Clare County Council, the OPW and Iarnród Éireann. I have brought them all together, they have all bought into it and are willing to fund the works".

Change in Motor Tax CLARE County Council has announced that motor tax delivery from the Ennistymon office will be changing. From 16th March onwards, a motor tax online renewals service will be delivered from its Ennistymon office.

Customers doing online motortax will receive a payment confirmation from the www.motortax. ie online service. This confirms a motor tax disc is applied for and paid for and the disc itself will be posted out within four working days by the Department of Transport.

The percentage of people doing their motor tax online in Clare is now 73%.

The sale of over the counter discs for the balance of motor tax business in the county will be provided at the Ennis motor tax office.

Customers who want the disc over the counter on the same day will need to present to the Ennis motor tax office.

Customers can ensure they have their motor tax disc ready to display on their vehicle by the due date by: Renewing anytime during the whole month before the current disc runs out; Buying it online in advance of the month end to allow for delivery by post by the 1st of the month following expiry; Posting the application to Ennis motor tax where the disc will be posted back the same day the application is received; Buying it in the Ennis motor tax office over the counter.

Cocaine seizure €2,100 of suspected co-

caine was seized by Gardaí in Tiermaclane on Monday evening.

Gardaí from the Clare divisional drugs unit were on patrol when they stopped and searched a car in Tiermaclane shortly after 5:30pm on Monday.

During the course of the search, Gardaí discovered

€2,100 of drugs which are

suspected to be cocaine, bags and a weighing scales.

No arrests were made at the scene but a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told The Clare Echo they are following "a definite line of enquiry".

The suspected drugs will now be sent for analysis.

Doolin misses out on €1.65m investment PÁRAIC McMAHON

OOLIN is to miss out on a €1.65m investment and the creation of 20 jobs following An Bord Pleanála's decision to overturn planning permission granted by Clare County Council for the development of a bar and restaurant.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, MJ Queally who submitted the application to construct the development expressed his "extreme disappointment" that the decision was appealed to the planning authority and later overturned. "It is frustrating, particularly for my family, my mum is getting on and she would like to see me and my daughter around."

Living in Boston since 2007, MJ revealed that his plans to relocate to Doolin with his daughter have now been scuppered. "Doolin is very seasonal. My plan with the brewery was to create an all-round venue, even though the season is getting longer in terms of numbers, it's been stretched out from before Paddy's Day right into the Fall, I didn't want to come in for just three months make my money and go away, I wanted to create something and a community centre. That site is a gaping hole, I was keen to give back and obviously make a living for myself, the original idea was to create 20 jobs with €1.65m invested into it, that will go elsewhere now".

Among those to write letters supporting his proposed development were an eighty five year old bachelor living "directly adjacent to the site" and another man who owns a cottage 20 metres "directly from the development".

He continued, "I respect the decision and the process, the veracity of objections should be subject to a bit more scrutiny, I consider myself to be Green, I don't even own a car in the States, the concerns raised were of an environmental nature, they came from a business across the street. Competition is the lifeblood of any economy, any innovation

comes from competition, I think Doolin is too expensive at the moment to eat if you're lucky enough to get a table somewhere, a bit of innovation wouldn't go astray".

Ironically MJ emigrated to the States to secure employment and his return was to employ people locally. He was annoyed with the reasons given by those who objected to the plans. "We did work in a transparent fashion with the Council and got that over the line, unfortunately there were objectors, I would just hope the real reason for their objections be outlined. I won't be developing it but somebody will at some stage".

Queally warned that the decision citing the lack of a wastewater system in Doolin "sets a massive precedent". "If you were to move to a small town anywhere else in the world and said I was going to invest and create this amount of jobs, the red carpet would be rolled out for you, I'm not saying I'm a big shot or anything. It's upsetting."

Queally admitted to having growing unease with the current narrative surrounding rural Ireland. "The biggest impediment to rural Ireland is not a post office or broadband, it is having a centre and the ability to innovate within the guidelines of which this is, it is conjunction with the development plan, it would be built now only for the objections, it comes to the crux of wastewater treatment, you have to accept the findings on it but the persons who raised that issue and the veracity of their claims has to be looked at. I've no ill will, I'll move on, I'll never live there now but my parents are looking at the site everyday, it is going to hurt them, my mother wanted me and my daughter to be around".

Since sitting down with The Clare Echo while on a return to the county, MJ said that having received overwhelming support in the locality he is "strongly considering changing his mind" and seeing what alternative routes can be followed.

He also wished that the objectors, McGann's Pub, Pat and Mary O'Donoghue be named, "I had to include my name with everything submitted on this, the same should apply".

Rory Best urges the people of Clare not to take their hearing for granted

Flanagan seeks a Seanad seat PÁRAIC McMAHON

OCIAL exclusion activist Ann Marie Flanagan (inset) is one of two Ennistymon residents contesting the upcoming Seanad election.

Not alone that but Ann Marie and Martin Conway (FG) are also seeking a seat on the Administrative Panel. They have already faced off twice in battles for political office namely the 2004 and 2009 local elections.

Back then, she was running as a Green Party candidate, now as she looks towards the Seanad she is Independent. "There are the Independents, the smaller parties and I hope considering the amount of support I've given the Green Party over the years that I will be supported in return and the other smaller groups.

I also hope my work and engagement with the bigger parties over the years, engaging at

national level with Ministers and TDs that they would look at my name and say we will give her a higher preference even if we can't get their number one.

I also hope that women councillors and Tds recognising that there isn't sufficient women in either Houses of the Oireachtas would look at my role because I am a feminist, I recognise the importance of gender balance".

"I represent a lot of people and have done so unelected, imagine my ambition if I am elected. I would be saying to councillors and TDs that what I bring is the

expertise based on my lived experience, I first hand understand the impact of social services and not having them".

Nominated by Independent Living Movement Ireland, her campaign has been boosted by the support of Clare TD, Michael McNamara (IND) and Cllr Ann Norton (IND). "I am ever the optimist, if I didn't believe in myself, my message and to be able to invoke and inspire councillors and Tds to consider voting for me I wouldn't do it".

An activist on social exclusion throughout her life, the Corofin native is braced for a hectic campaign.

"Travelling around the country is something everyone has to do, political parties will be supporting their own candidates and I'm hoping they will give me a preference vote. I know I have to get a significant amount of votes to have a chance at taking a seat, that in itself is a challenge.

Last time round a non-elected representative secured a seat, if they can do it, I can do it".

‘A voice for the West’ - Vaughan A VOICE for business and tourism experience is needed in Seanad Éireann, Michael Vaughan is adamant and he believes he has the right vocal chords to fill that role.

Work on securing a nomination to the Seanad began for the fourth generation hotelier last Autumn. The nomination is in the bag and now Vaughan is eyeing up a post on the Industrial and Commercial Panel, the same as his colleague Timmy Dooley (FF).

He admitted that his lack of visible political activity may hinder his chances but the Lahinch father of two also maintained that is an attribute eligible voters should be enthused by. "From where I see it, I have a lot of life and business experience that is something that isn't always well represented, career politicians such as Timmy have a huge role to play in politics, they do play a role but there is and should be a place for the voice of business experience and the tourism experience that I have".

Vaughan’s father was former President Paddy Hillery's first ever election agent and his grandfather "worked towards the establishment of the first Dáil".

"There is a contribution to be made by business people into politics and the political life of the country, it can be done in a very focused manner in the Seanad, in the Dáil you have the clientelism of the electorate to pander to.

“When the house was originally established, it was done so that the voice of industry would be represented through the industrial and commercial panel, in latter years it has been used for politicians to wet their feet and get experience before moving onto the main house. My view is to use it as it was originally intended, tourism interests along the west coast of the country, small family businesses and rural life".

Charity Horse Ride in aid of Clare Suicide Bereavement Support ENJOY a Hack and Cross-Country Ride around Quin/Doora and surrounding areas with the annual Charity Horse Ride in aid of Clare Suicide Bereavement Support.

This year the Charity Horse Ride takes place on Sunday March 15th.

It will leave from The Monk’s Well, Quin at 12.30pm, stopping by the Shibeen in Doora for refreshment, and then returning to The Monk’s Well for further food and refreshments.

All levels of horse and pony are welcome. Entry fees are: Horses €25, Ponies €15.

Clare Suicide Bereavement Support is a voluntary organisation which has been supporting the bereaved in Clare for seventeen years.

None of the members are paid and the support which is available 24/7 is free of charge.

Clare S.B.S. is registered with the Charities Regulator and a report is submitted annually.

Support is offered to families and friends who have lost a loved one by suicide.

This support may be on a one to one basis, to a family or community

group or to a group of bereaved people who come together for a Healing Programme.

A death by suicide is usually followed by extreme sadness, turmoil and emotional pain.

There can also be a sense of aloneness and a fear of not being accepted or understood.

It can also be difficult to admit that one needs support.

The support offered by Clare S.B.S. is completely confidential and those who have looked for support have found a way to gradually move towards self-acceptance and calm.

While the loved one who has died is never forgotten, the pain is made easier.

The bereaved person learns to deal with the loss and get back to a normal pattern of living.

Beautiful Affair ‘one of the best things I’ve ever done’

Y WRITING his first book, Mike Hanrahan (inset) has experienced a range of emotions, so much so that he declared it to be one of the best things he has accomplished, writes Paraic McMahon.

Hanrahan's book Beautiful Affair was shortlisted for the An Post Irish Book Awards in the Best Irish-Published Book of the Year category last year.

"I got back to my childhood and a lot of people connected with growing up in Ireland in the 1970s, it was good for me to be able to get back into that and write about it. I half lived in the town and the country so I was somewhere in between in the middle, my parents were from Barntick and Ballyea whereas we were living in Ennis, we spent a lot of our summers in Ballyea in the farm so it was nice to revisit that, it was good to go over the history of Stockton's Wing too.

“The fact that it was shortlisted for Book of the Year brought a real buzz for me, I'm delighted with it".

Cooking had always been a hobby for Mike but it was his time training with Ballymaloe's Darina Allen that saw this

become a second career.Three years ago, the former IMRO Chairman stopped working as a cook. "I learned a lot and became a much better cook, I had enough and thought about writing a book on why I moved from music to food and what food meant to me.

“The book was the natural progression for me to bridge as I went back into music, now I'm doing the music full-time with some nice gigs for the book coming up, I'm so looking forward to the Ennis gig, I'll be around the corner from streets and places that I wrote about in the book. I owe an awful lot to Ennis and my upbringing there, that's where my music started so it's really special to be back in Ennis".

Returning to Clare for the Ennis Book Club Festival is similar to performing in the Banner County at a Stockton's Wing gig, he explained.

"Because it's home, it's not like any other gig, some of the people at the book gig I'd have written about them in the book.

“The early part of the book is what shaped me, my childhood in Ennis and the peo-

ple I met along the way so we're getting right into the heart of it".

Having returned to music full-time with Stockton's Wing, Mike outlined that they have received a new lease of life with the next generation of the band's followers. This extra platform has given their music "another rerun".

"That is the greatest gift that the last album has given us, I always said when Universal came with the proposal to release the album that it was a great opportunity for our music to go into new generations".

A Journey in Music, Food and Friendship with Mike Hanrahan takes place on Saturday 7th March at 6pm in St Columba's as part of the Ennis Book Club Festival. Tickets are available from €8 to €10 and can be purchased through glór's box office.

€180m Opera Site development granted permission in Limerick AN BORD Pleanála have granted planning permission for a €180 million development in Limerick.

The 1.62 hectare Opera Site is the largest project in the LTT programme and will be developed over a six year period.

It is fully funded thanks to commitments from the European Investment Bank and the Council of Europe Development Bank. Work on the project will commence in the second half of this year.

The site, which was acquired by Limerick City Council in 2011 after a previous plan to develop it

failed in the downturn, will be capable of employing up to 3,000 people across a 450,000 sq ft campus. The project will be developed to LEED Gold and Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) standards.

Welcoming the announcement, Mayor Sheahan said: "This is one of the most important and welcome announcements for Limerick as it will literally transform our city centre into a worldclass space capable of attracting major global investment and, more importantly, people to work and, indeed, live there.”

The mix-use Opera scheme will comprise: A 14-storey landmark building at Bank Place comprising c. 13,264 sq m office floorspace; A4-6 storey over-basement building, with 12,654 sq m of office space, 960 sq m retail and 430 sq m restaurant/café use ; A 5 Storey building on the corner of Patrick St. and Ellen St. comprising an apart-hotel (c.5,150.6 sq m), 13 apartments and c.1,013.8 sq m of retail; A refurbished 4 storey over-basement building on Rutland Street providing c. 444.2 sq m of retail use, with three residential dwellings above; Refurbishment of 9, Ellen Street (Quinn's) to provide a c. 1,260.3 sq m bar and restaurant; The renovation and adaption of the former Town Hall to provide a new public library of c.4,515.8 sq m, office floor space, retail and café/restaurant; The refurbishment of the Granary Building.

Ennis Book Club celebrates International Women's Day

ELEBRATE International Women’s Day and the start of Ennis Book Club Festival with camaraderie, conversation, connection and a hint of comedy at Make it Happen 2020 on Friday, March 6.

This event has drawn authors from Canada and the USA to Ennis as well as the beloved actress Lise-Ann McLaughlin best known in her former role in Fair City. The panel of international female authors and writers will share their own experiences of change and chat about the fact that when women come together, they can choose to make incredible things happen.

This first event of Ennis Book Club Festival will host Carla White, Canadian author of Reignite Your Spark, Danne Reed, American creator of Fashionably Late, Lise-Ann McLaughlin, Irish actress and screenwriter, Niamh Ennis, writer and podcaster, and Sharon Cahir, solicitor and co-author of Success University for Women will show that regardless of international divide, inspiring women to connect more and lifting each other higher is a global theme.

'A fine line between grief and depression' Rose on overcoming her partner’s death and battling post-natal depression

OSE McMahon has transformed her life, going from places of deep despair to now helping others to better their mind and body.

Giving birth to her first daughter Abigail brought with it joy in Rose's life and that of the McMahon family as they welcomed their first grand-child. The christening celebrations coincided with the Ruan Hunt but they were tragically cut short when David, Abi's father and Rose's partner died.

"When I went home that night I wasn't expecting I would wake up the next morning and my partner to be dead in the bed beside me. I recalled a sound that night that sounds like a snore, brushed it off, nagged to stop snoring, but little did I know that was his last breath and the sudden tragedy that would shape mine and my daughter's life," Rose recalled to The Clare Echo of the Manchester man's death on November 29, 1999.

Rose said that David choking on his own saliva as he slept "did mean the end of the world for Abi and me at that time yet ironically was the catalyst for change, growth, healing and transformation. It changed my life and put everything into perspective".

She continued, "There was a real fine line between grief and depression but I was able to

knowledge myself so much on that to get to the other side of the grief, thank goodness".

Dealing with depression was nothing new to McMahon as she experienced it while attending Ennis Community College. "Nobody ever knew because I hid it so well, the internal dialogue was negative, judgemental and criticising, I was getting paranoid when people laughed because I thought they were laughing at me, I never pinpointed it as a depression, I was in my teens and you think depression is for older people.

"Whether it came back during the grieving process I don't really know but it certainly came back as post-natal depression. Generally that leaves after a period of time but in my situation it didn't. I had the courage to ask for help, find the courage to ask for support, there is so many different networks, Pieta House and Samaritans all have numbers and therapists. We go to the doctor willy nilly if we have a cold or an ailment, we've no problem getting a prescription to get it sorted, when it comes to mental health there is a taboo sometimes about going to a therapist, asking for help or admitting that you are depressed, it is not something to be ashamed of.”

She returned to education in the years after David's death and completed courses in childcare and "many different faculties". The 43 year old stated, "Studying education was really empowering, now I know knowledge is power". Rosie was fortunate enough to find love again, this time with Micheál, their blos-

soming relationship and pregnancies that followed meant she had to turn down the opportunity to study art in Galway.

Further arrivals to the family brought immense joy but also saw McMahon experience post-natal depression and anxiety. "Usually it goes away after a certain length of time but this wasn't going away. I used to love being out, going out, meeting up with people, I had three babies under four and a child at school, I found that I didn't want to be going out, I was spending more time on home, everything was getting on top of me and I was getting burnt out with trying to manage the whole show between home and kids, it felt like I was getting deeper and deeper into a rabbit hole, I couldn't see any light".

Light came when the Ballynacally resident had the courage to tell a nurse that suicidal thoughts were in her mind. She followed this up by enlisting the services of a house cleaner and child minder from time to time to relieve her stress. "Once I said that, it was a weight off my shoulders, the elephant was out of the room because I admitted and acknowledged this was how I was feeling".

Slowly the thoughts became less dark, she rediscovered her mojo and started exercising more. Getting out and about was "hugely important" but it led to the creation of a meet and train group and Rosie returning to education to do study exercise, health and fitness at UL. During the classes, she saw "a niche for yoga" to help participants struggling with

hip and knee injuries. For the last four years, yoga has been her focus but she completed a life coaching course to combine yoga and weights. "With the life coaching, the yoga, the exercise and fitness, it's mind, mindset and body work, I combined it all together and now I'm a transformation coach.

“Generally my clients are women from the age of 35-55 who are experiencing anxiety, depression and are not able to make changes in their life and struggles to get beyond what is holding them back".

Now that she has learned to manage her difficulties, Rosie is keen to help others through her coaching, podcasts and YouTube videos.

The key message she reiterated is that "it is okay to ask for help" and that support must be sought when negative thoughts fester. "If you get suicidal or very negative thoughts it is a real alarm bell to say you need help.

“Those thoughts can get so deep, find that courage to speak to somebody face to face, contact a group like Samaritans or Pieta House, share with them how you are feeling, it is nothing to be ashamed off.

“Everyone has blue days but if your blue days are more than one or two and they are delving into a week or two weeks, source that help and support, be surrounded by people who are there for you, that are positive and are looking out for you".

Loophead lease is extended for another 25 years LOOP Head lighthouse is set to stay shining for at least another quarter of a century.

An agreement has been signed between the Commissioner of Irish Lights and Clare County Council to lease the property at the Lighthouse premises for a further term of 25 years. The agreement was signed in the

presence of Mayor of Clare, Claire Colleran Molloy.

Clare County Council manages Loophead Lighthouse Visitor Experience in conjunction with the Commissioners of Irish Lights, since its reopening to the public as a visitor attraction in 2011. The popular tourist attraction

attracts approx 27,000 visitors annually. It has helped to strengthen the profile, both nationally and internationally, of the wider Loop Head Peninsula and what it has to offer as a tourism destination.

Loophead Lighthouse is located at the mouth of the Shannon Estuary, which is one

of two “Signature Discovery Points” in County Clare along the route of the Wild Atlantic Way. This Lighthouse is one of 68 lighthouses operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights around the coast of Ireland and continues to provide a vital role in maritime safety.

'None were better' than the late Canon Taaffe PÁRAIC McMAHON

ANON Pat Taaffe was remembered as a warm, witty and engaging man for whom family and prayer remained the most important things in life as he made significant contributions to communities across the county.

Born on Christmas Eve, Canon Pat died on February 29, a leap year at the age of 90.

A native of Tubber, he served as a priest in the Diocese of Killaloe for 64 years. Warm tributes have been extended to Taaffe since his passing with hundreds attending Tuesday’s Funeral Mass at Ennis Cathedral along with 57 priests and 21 altar servers.

Following his ordination, Pat’s first appointment was on temporary mission to the Diocese of St Augustine in Florida.

Upon his return in 1961, he was appointed curate in Doonbeg where he stayed for 12 years. He was based in Ennis and Portarlington in the 1970s before becoming parist priest of Corofin, Kilnaboy and Rath in 1990. Two years on, he was made a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter and a decade later in June 2003, he retired as parish priest and returned to serve as an assistant

priest in Ennis.

Symbols of his love of prayer and family were brought to the altar as part of the offertory along with a painting of his life by Noreen Flynn. “For Canon Pat, family was very important, each Sunday he would go back home to Tubber to meet with family,” Fr Tom Ryan stated. Sport was also a keen interest in his life. “The football tells the story of his great love for Doonbeg”.

His nephew Eamon scored the winning goal as Clare claimed the All-Ireland title in 1995. The hurley with which Taaffe scored was also brought to the altar. “The hurley that scored the All-Ireland winning goal of 1995. It didn’t give Canon Pat a heart attack on that day but led him to live forever,” Fr Ryan noted.

Bishop Fintan Monahan who was chief celebrant at Tuesday’s service, said, “For the almost four years that I’ve known Canon Pat he left a deep impression and I’m sure I will never forget him. He was gentle, peaceful, kind, witty, warm, prayerful, welcoming, engaging, you always felt he was totally present to you in conversation.

He had this lovely phrase when you asked him how he was, he would say ‘all the better for seeing you’, whether he meant it or not I don’t know”.

Monsignor Seamus Horgan’s presence at the funeral was acknowledged as “a great final tribute” as the Bishop informed the congregation he returned from Rome especially “seeing as Canon Pat was so influential in he becoming a priest”. Speaking at a prayer service on Monday, Horgan described his mentor as “perpetually joyful and perpetually ageless”.

A Doonbeg native sent an email to Bishop Monahan on Sunday night expressing her sadness at the death of Canon Taaffe.

She recalled his influence in “starting and completing many projects” including Shanahan McNamara Memorial Park and the West Clare Drama Festival. “He was pleasant and had the ability to bring people along with him through his quiet leadership. It was a sad day when he said goodbye to the people of Doonbeg”.

PRITZKER PRIZE FOR McNAMARA

LISDOONVARNA’S Shelley McNamara has won the coveted Pritzker prize alongside Yvonne Farrell.

It is the first time a female duo have won architecture’s most prestigious award. The Dublin based pair have practiced together for four decades and first met at the University College of Dublin in 1974.

They founded their firm Grafton Architects in 1978 which now has a staff of 38 people and won the World Building of the Year award in 2008 for their Bocconi University building in Milan. McNamara and Farrell who is from Tullamore are the first Irish architects to be honoured with receiving the Pritzker prize. They are the fourth and fifth women receiving this prestigious award, after Zaha Hadid, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa and Carme Pigem.

Shelley and Yvonne are “beacons” to females in the industry, the jury described the duo as “pioneers in a field that has traditionally been and still is male-dominated. “They are also beacons to other women as they forge their exemplary professional path”.

“Their approach to architecture is always honest, revealing an understanding of the processes of design and construction from large-scale structures to the smallest details. It is often in these details, especially in buildings with modest budgets, where a big impact can be felt”.

Declan achieves ‘crazy’ Guinness World Record PÁRAIC McMAHON

QUIN'S Declan McEvoy has set a Guinness World Record after riding the entire length of the frozen Lake Baikal on his motorbike.

Three years ago, Declan conceived the idea which he described as "a crazy dream" to ride the entire length of the Siberia lake which is the deepest lake in the world.

After months of planning, "crazy logistics and a failed solo attempt", he rolled off the ice on Sunday in the town of Severobaikalsk at 14:40 (local time).

To secure the Guinness World Record, the team of three had to ride more than 700km, they managed to successfully track over 820km, this took them seven days to complete.

McEvoy was joined by riders from India and Lithuania, they

successfully made a proposal to a leading Indian motorcycle company for sponsorship and received funding for the whole expedition.

Speaking to The Clare Echo from Siberia, Declan admitted, "The satisfaction was incredible but for sure it wasn't easy, nor was it ever meant to be easy.

Our bodies are so fatigued, we are physically and mentally exhausted, but we are smiling".

He revealed that they were involved in "a serious life threatening situation" during the expedition as the team became separated from the support vehicle which was carrying the fuel.

"We eventually ran out of fuel and became stranded after dark in temperatures below -20c".

They were left in this situation for a few hours, it was "after dark" again before the groups could exchange locations.

Crowe takes aim at party antics

NEWLY elected TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) has declared he won’t contest local elections in the future while hitting out at tactics used within Fianna Fáil in Clare. Crowe’s seat on Clare County Council will be filled by Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF) who party members gave their backing to on Sunday last.

In his address to party members, the former teacher outlined, “My days as a County Councillor are done”. Cathal alluded to crookedness within party politics, referencing a 2003 convention when a Meelick cumann member received a phonecall advising him to stay home which meant Crowe “was down a vote”.

Praise for four of the five candidates that appeared on the ballot paper was voiced

by Crowe. Fellow Meelick parishioner Noel Broggy did not receive a mention in the TD’s speech - arguments between both families has ended up in The High Court previously.

“There was some recruitment that went on in the last couple of months, at a time when Kilrush didn’t have a cumann, it has one now fortunately but Meelick have a second cumann would you believe. There are members that came in tonight that I’ve never seen at a Fianna Fáil function, they certainly didn’t canvass with me and some of them don’t even know their members, read between the lines in that regard, bitter pills something to swallow.”

History is a passion of Crowe’s that the people of Clare are well aware of. The thirty seven year old referred to the family’s ancestral home by Woodcock Hill which was involved in the Meelick ambush of 1921 and is now the residence of his uncle Tom. “One Meelick ambush in a century is more than enough,”

Parental alienation is ‘a form of child abuse’ PÁRAIC McMAHON

RECOGNISED by the World Health Organisation as a crime, Clare County Council are the latest local authority to pass a motion seeking recognition of parental alienation.

Recommendation 36 from the Report of the Reform of the Family Law System sought that "consideration be given as to whether laws should be amended to take into account situations where one parent is wrongfully influencing their child or children against the other parent, thereby creating unfair and unwarranted alienation that can be destructive and life lasting".

At a motion to the February meeting of Clare County Council, Cllr Mary Howard (FG) called for the Departments of Health, Justice and Equality, Children and Youth Affairs "to recognise that parental alienation is 'substantial and sustained dissatisfaction within a caregiver-child relationship associated with significant disturbance'." She described it as "a form of child abuse".

"When I got involved in local Government ten years ago, social justice was at my heart," Cllr Howard outlined. She said the concept of parental alienation was brought to her attention by a friend, Trudy Leyden. "Subliminal messages are being sent to children, 'Daddy or Mom doesn't love us' as a result of anger, bitterness and the stress of a relationship breaking down.

"This needs to be identified as a crime, it is recognised by WHO as a crime," the Ennis representative added.

Clare County Council became the 14th local authority to pass a motion on the subject as Cllr Shane Talty (FF) seconded the proposal. It was a subject that "tugged my heartstrings", Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) confessed. "When I read this motion first I didn't have a clue what was going on, when Mary explained it to me I got emotional. It is a crime, I commend Mary for bringing this forward".

Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) warned of the long-lasting affects of parental alienation. "Using a child as emotion is extremely wrong, it has emotional affects. I really cannot stress the emotional damage that can be done when a child is used emotionally, it affects their upbrining and future relationships".

Speaking to The Clare Echo following the passing of the motion, Trudy Leyden said she saw tears in people’s eyes in the public gallery. “I am so proud to have played a part in the changing landscape of social justice in Ireland. I want to thank Cllr Mary Howard for putting forward this motion as I requested and all the councillors who spoke about it with passion. There were a few in the public gallery with tears in there eyes and I hope that very soon it will be national legislation. Now, in County Clare if you abuse a child by alienating them from a parent, everybody will know that Clare County Council recognises it as a criminal act”.

Students from Ennis National School and St. Fiannachta’s National School, Sixmilebridge, and Milford National School in Limerick descended on the airport terminal for the seventh annual Schools Band Spectacular.

Welcoming them to the airport, Andrew Murphy, Managing Direc-

tor, Shannon Airport, a Shannon Group company said: “We have been hosting the Schools Band Spectacular for seven years and we really look forward to it.

“It’s a fixture in our calendar and another opportunity for us to deepen our relationship with the community.

Fianna Fáil needs to ‘rebuild’ Shannon Town - McNamara A COMBINED effort from party members is needed to help Fianna Fáil rebuild in Shannon Town, writes Paraic McMahon.

Louise McNamara (FF) expressed that sentiment following last week’s selection convention to fill the Clare County Council vacated by Cathal Crowe (FF).

The Shannon woman had put her name forward before the membership and was tipped by some party sources as the favourite to prevail.

Shannon Town has been without a Fianna Fáil councillor since Sean Hillery lost his seat in the 2004 local election to Cllr Gerry Flynn

(IND) and Cllr PJ Ryan (IND).

The absence of a party representative from Shannon Town on the local authority was referred to by Louise speaking at the selection convention. She began her address to members by congratulating Pat O’Gorman on his success.

“I am willing to work with him to help rebuild the party in this particular area of the town, we all need to put our elbow to the board, it was an honour to be part of the democratic process that our party operates on. I wish everybody the very best, I commiserate with Robert and Noel”.

Living in Stonehall, Louise contested the 2014 local election and was eliminated on the fifth count.

She felt the presence of twenty year old Emma Begley on the ballot paper offered a glimmer of optimism for Fianna Fáil.

‘Data needs to be protected’ THE fact that data is now regarded as the new oil in the running of a business and that the exploitation of data is a very lucrative business prompted Shannon Chamber to host a seminar on data protection in conjunction with Holmes O’Malley Sexton (HOMS) solicitors and the Data Protection Commission, hosted by Ei Electronics at their Centre of Excellence, Shannon Free Zone.

The purpose of the seminar was to make companies aware of the risks of leaving their systems open to a breach, the importance of complying with GDPR procedures, the need to induct new employees regarding data protection, ensure that IT systems are kept fully up-to-date at all times and, if using third-party IT contractors, that their service contacts are continually reviewed.

Keynote speakers at the seminar, Michael Murphy, partner, HOMS litigation department, who specialises in cyber risks, data protection and defence litigation and Garrett O’Neill, head of consultation in the private and financial sector in the Data Protection Commission, gave very insightful presentations with real-life examples of data breaches and the consequences of such breaches.

Urging attendees to treat personal data almost akin to ‘money’ for data protection purposes, Mr Murphy stated that GDPR somewhat requires companies to act as a bank in relation to their customers data with similar obligations in relation to taking up, storing or returning such data.

Mr Murphy explained that cyber attacks can include stealing customer details, raiding online bank accounts, infecting computers and devices with viruses or stealing business information, acquired through phishing (convincing looking fraudulent emails); vishing (impersonating your bank or other organisation and phoning you at home or at work); smishing (similar to vishing but using texts instead); and internet and social media searches (researching your online profile), Mr Murphy warned that 94% of phishing emails use commonly recognised infected file attachment such as pdfs, doc or xls requiring the recipient to click a link, visit a malicious website and/or download an infected attachment which then infects their PC or mobile device.

This week, every year, I’m reminded of the 13500km journey I undertook in 2016.

When I mention the distance involved, most people immediately assume it was to somewhere exotic like Bali, or southern Argentina. However, that journey took place, over a 5-and-a-half-week period, entirely within the Republic of Ireland.

This journey is currently underway once more by more hopefuls, all aiming to win election, as I did four years ago, to Seanad Éireann. I’ve been involved in every kind of election campaign in this state, but the Seanad campaign stands out as possibly the most gruelling and attractional of all in terms of effort required, and difficulty.

Firstly, allow me to provide some background as to how it all works. In practical terms, the Seanad is broken up into eight panels. Two of these are university panels with six seats on which graduates of Trinity College and the NUI’s can vote. There is also the effective panel of Taoiseach’s nominees of eleven seats which are appointed by the Taoiseach whenever he or she is elected by the Dáil, after the rest of the Seanad elections are over.

The remaining five panels are the Vocational Panels on which Councillors, TD’s and outgoing Senators are the electors.

These panels, in theory, are there to represent expertise from various fields. In practise though, it is a head count of what parties have the most seats in local and national government. At present, this is Fianna Fáil who will be expected to fill the most seats in the Vocational Panels. They are followed by Fine Gael and Independents.

A way behind them come Sinn Féin, the Labour party and the Greens with smaller parties further back again. In all, of the 43 vocational seats available, it is expected that FF will win between 12 and 16, FG 11 to 15, SF 6 or 7, Labour 3 or 4 and the Greens 3. If

lELECTIONS: The Seanad chamber lies in wait Independents voted independent there’d be 9 elected, however, the IND vote often fragments to support other parties.

Therefore, the final number of seats won by each party depends on how many Independent politicians can be wooed by candidates of the parties and how inter party transfers pan out.

To confuse matters further, each vocational panel is sub-divided into inside and outside panels. Inside panels are filled by candidates nominated by sitting Oireachtas members. Outside panel candidates are nominated by various ascribed nominating bodies. For instance, 4 years ago, I was nominated by Engineers Ireland to contest election to the Industrial and Commercial Panel.

From the point of securing a nomination, candidates hit the road to try find and talk to Councillors, Senators and TD’s to ask them for their vote. Again, in practical terms, this means that candidates from a particular party are not competing with other party candidates but against their own party nominees in order to secure one of the seats the party is expected to win, given the size of their local government team.

For example, even though the party are likely to win only 14 or 15 seats, there are 40 Fianna Fáil candidates (9 of which are on the inside panel) for the Seanad election.

Each of these will be calling on the 330 FF public reps along with Independents and smaller parties in order to try convince them that they should be amongst the chosen few for election to the Upper House of Parliament. FG have similar issue with a similar number trying to win favour

amongst the estimate 306 FG public reps. SF have 122 public reps but have maintained a tight control of their candidate list with just 7 nominees.

Labour have nominated 4 and the Greens 3, reflecting the 65 and 62 public reps they respectively have in their ranks.

The main interest therefore will be the identity of who emerges from the FF, FG and IND ranks to take those seats on offer.What shouldn’t be lost in all this is the fact that, contrary to popular belief, the Seanad plays a very important role in our democracy. It’s true to say that far too often parties have used it to blood new candidates for the Dáil or as a consolation prize for defeated candidates. Every party is guilty of this.

Nevertheless, some of the best legislation and amendments have come from Seanad Éireann, including, in the last Seanad, the coercive control legislation to help victims of domestic violence which saw its first conviction just last month. Other landmark enacted bills started by the outgoing Seanad include, the Irish Sign Language recognition bill and Civil Law (Presumption of Death) bill.

The Upper House is often the place where overarching long needed, but possibly not viewed as nationally urgent bills get an introduction before they can become law.

However, that is all academic.

In the interim, expect to see your local Councillor harassed by dozens of hopefuls all vying to get one of their five or more Senate votes. If this incoming Seanad does one thing and one thing only, it badly needs to deliver the Seanad reform, including universal suffrage, we were all promised post the 2013 abolition referendum.

Bogus waste collectors operating in Clare STUART HOLLY

LARE householders are being urged to change their attitudes towards waste disposal, writes Stuart Holly. It comes amid investigations by Clare County Council’s waste enforcement team into unauthorised collectors who have been operating in the area.

Unwitting home owners could fall foul of the law to the tune of â‚Ź5,000 if they use the services of an unauthorised waste collector while clearing out a garage or doing a renovation. Bogus collectors are often enlisted through word of mouth or by knocking door to door, however Clare County Council say residents must be vigilant.

Maria Carey, Executive Engineer in the Environment Section of Clare County Council, explains that in some cases a householder may make a transaction with a bogus waste collector in good faith, who in turn could “just dump it illegally on the side of the road or on someone else’s land�.

She continues, “What will happen then is it will be noted, reported and the waste enforcement section of Clare County Council will carry out an investigation. If they find anything in the rubbish, it will link back to you, the householder. They might find a letter with an address or a name and it’s the householder who is responsible and could face prosecution.�

Under waste management bylaws which came into force in 2018, all householders and businesses are required to demonstrate that they have a waste collection service. Ms Carey adds, “So the waste enforcement section can write out to a householders and ask them to demonstrate that they have a contract and that they have been making regular payments. Some people might not have that in which case they can show regular receipts from the recycling centre.�

Ms Carey urged anyone

who encounters a bogus waste collector to notify Clare County Council’s Waste Enforcement Team and to try and identify as much as possible about the person in question such as the vehicle registration number to help authorities identify the culprit. On what signs to look out for, she explained that under legislation waste collectors are obliged to have an NWCPO (the National Waste Collection Permit Office) permit.

Authorised collectors are obliged to keep records of all collections and destination sites. “It’s not enough to just produce a card or one sheet of paper, it’s actually a document which is between 16 and 25 pages long. It’ll have a number and the collector’s vehicle also should have the same number displayed on the vehicle, so that would be a way of verifying that the document is a legitimate document. “From time to time we come across these unauthorised waste collectors who just call on householders doors and offer to take their waste away. If any householder comes across a situation like that, you would need to ask to see their national waste collection permit.�

The Waste Enforcement Team confirmed to The Clare Echo that there are ongoing investigations into bogus waste collectors. Ms Carey adds, “The enforcement team are investigating a few reports of cases such as this. It is liable to happen anywhere but we see it more in areas of higher population density. Sometimes the problem starts in the town and it’s disposed of in a rural area.�

Ms Carey added, “We just want people to change their mindset towards waste. People maybe have an attitude towards waste, to just get rid of it. But there is legislation there that it is your responsibility to manage your own waste and even if you did pay someone in good faith, the responsibility will always come back to you.�

A chain of love and hope

S

O OFTEN, I hear the following phrase: "Life doesn't send us anything we can't cope with."

This isn't to say that life doesn't send us a barrel load of awful hardship at times, but that when it does, we can deal with it, that our coping powers are far in excess of what we perhaps think.

In spite of this refreshing news, we still fail to cope on a daily basis with the events that crop up.

When I say 'fail to cope', I don't mean that we fall into a mega depression or run screaming to the hills every time life goes against us.

Rather, we moan, whine, cry, get snappy and generally over emotional about things that could otherwise be solved quite easily.

These things, if we were to look closer, are perhaps not just problems, but maybe also solutions or as I like to call them blessings to help us face up to life's problems and challenges with hope.

The old road to Ennis This young man was driving home one evening, on the old Gort to Ennis road.

Work in his community was almost as slow as his beat-up ford focus, but he never quit looking. Ever since the factory closed, he'd been unemployed, and with winter coming on, the chill had finally hit home. It was a lonely road since the new motorway had been built. It was starting to get dark and light rain was coming down. He almost didn't see the old lady, stranded on the side of the road. But even in the dimness, he could see she needed help.

So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help, for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe. He looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold.

He said, "I'm here to help you Ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm?

By the way, my name is Fearghal."

Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Fearghal crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.

She asked him how much she owed him.

Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Fearghal never thought twice about the money.

He told her if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance that they needed, and Fearghal added "...and think of me." He waited until she started her car and drove off.

A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. Her waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed that the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude.

Then she remembered Fearghal. . .

After the lady finished her meal, and the waitress went to get change for a hundred euro note that the lady gave her in payment for her food, the lady slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. She wondered where the lady could be, then she noticed something written on the napkin under which were 4 one-hundred euro notes.

There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote. It said: "You don't owe me anything, I have been there too.

Somebody once helped me out the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this 'chain of love and hope' end with you."

That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it?

With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, "Everything's gonna be alright - I love you, Fearghal."

Thought for the week As your thought for the week may I offer up this comfort blessing for you the reader that you may see the light in the darkness during life's problems and challenging times!

May the light of your soul bless the work that you do with the secret love and warmth of your heart. May you see in what you do the beauty of your own soul. May the sacredness of your work bring healing, light and renewal to those who work with you and to those who see and receive your work. May your work never weary you.

May it release within you wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement. May you be present in what you do.

May you never become lost in bland absences. May the day never burden. May dawn find you awake and alert, approaching your new day with dreams, possibilities and promises. May evening find you gracious and fulfilled. May you go into the night blessed, sheltered and protected. May your soul calm, console and renew you.

CORK BOI YOUNG Offenders star Shane Casey (Billy Murphy) from the popular RTE series is to launch the first teenage disco at the Hydro Hotel in Lisdoonvarna on the 14th March.

The actor from the hit TV show will be at the event to ‘meet and greet’ teens and pose for photos on the night.

The troubled ‘Young Offenders’ character became a cult hero after he serenaded a hijacked bus with a version of The Frank and Walter’s hit After All. His phrase “I'm Billy Murphy" was coined after this bus episode.

Marcus White, Managing Director of the Hydro Hotel said: “We are delighted that the actor Shane Casey will launch our first teen disco on St Patrick’s weekend. When he announced that he would be coming to the event last week on the new social media platform ‘TikTok’ the video went viral with over 82,000

views.

“It is the first of many teen discos we plan to have at the hotel this year – there is a huge demand for teen discos in North Clare as we know that a lot of teens have to travel to Ennis for these events.

“This will be a professionally supervised event, with strictly no alcohol or illegal substances and is for secondary students only,” Mr White added.

DJs on the night will be Killian Murphy, a club DJ with residencies in Santa Ponca, Spain who will be playing alongside upcoming guest DJ Adam from Co Limerick. There will be prizes and giveaways on the night.

NDIVIDUALS warning about the effects of climate change are far more common in 2020 than in years gone by when Éanna Ní Lamhna was one of a few voices issuing notes of caution.

Born in Louth, the biologist and environmental consultant is coming to Clare this week as a guest speaker as part of the Ennis Book Club Festival. She is the headline act for Sunday’s literary lunch where she will be interviewed by Clare FM’s Gavin Grace.

Visits to the Banner County have become more common for Éanna in the past year. “As it happens, my darling son has gone off to live in Kilrush, he is getting married to a Kilrush woman next November”.

She added, “The Kilrush Tidy Towns is an extremely active group, they are very interested in talking to people when I come down. I know the whale and dolphin group.

Clare is a wonderful county for wildlife, I’m delighted he went to live in Clare”.

With one of the most wellknown voices when it comes to talking about the environment, Ní Lamhna acknowledged that none of her three children have followed her path in terms of professions but “like normal people they look after the environment”.

Seven years ago, she retired from her post as a lecturer on sustainable development and

environmental management at Dublin Institute of Technology.

“During the crash” from 2005 to 2009, Éanna was President of An Taisce, She felt that over a decade ago people were less willing to be active so far as the environment was concerned.

“People were anxious to do good for the environment as long as it didn’t affect them”.

“A poor woman is up before the Courts for cutting down Sitka Spruces in Cork because she didn’t like them, she was certainly standing up to be counted with her chainsaw.

“There is much more awareness now than there was ever before, people know the impact of these things, they can see the impact of climate change, before it was just us saying it was going to happen and they were saying ‘yeah yeah yeah’”.

With reference made to the trees, the former Vice President of the Tree Council of Ireland is reminded of Seamus Heaney. “The house of the planter

is known by the trees, Seamus Heaney said.

“Trees were associated with the land of gentry because they owned the land that the trees were on.

“People have a love/hate relationship with trees, this woman cutting down the trees is maintaining that sitka spruce are foreign trees and aren’t good for biodiversity, she wishes that they were native trees, the trouble is she’s doing it on Coillte land with no permission”.

She told The Clare Echo that she is excited to feature as part of the Ennis Book Club Festival.

“I haven’t been down to the Ennis Book Club Festival before, they have different people every year, it’s a great honour to be invited down here and talk about what I write, how I think and whatever they want to ask me.

“It’s a great honour to be the guest on the Sunday lunchtime”.

Students from St Patrick’s Comprehensive School in Shannon are through to the National Final of SEAI One Good Idea competition to encourage climate action. The competition encourages students to take responsibility for tackling climate change.

‘CompGoesGreen’, from St. Patrick’s Comprehensive School was named the Senior Winner in the Post Primary School Category for their campaign which aim to reduce the use of single-use plastic and promote stainless steel water bottles, handmade beeswax wraps, and fundraise for installation of a hydration station. They will go on to the National Final on Thursday, 23 April in Dublin.

The Old Kilfarboy Society welcome back their former chair and local historian, Dr. John Treacy to present the final talk in the Society's Autumn / Winter 2019-2020 series: The 1920 Canada Cross shootings: a discussion on the anatomy of a local tragedy.

"On April 14 1920, Miltown Malbay celebrated the release of the hunger strikers from Mountjoy Prison. The hunger strikers victory against the Crown was celebrated at the Canada Cross in Miltown by burning a tar barrel bonfire, singing songs and telling republican stories. Fearful of public disorder, a joint RIC and Royal Highland Infantry Regiment unit left the RIC barracks at the Square in Miltown.

The patrol made its way in the direction of the celebration at the end of Main Street.

The soldiers fixed bayonets and the leader of the patrol, Sergeant James Hampson, made his way to the corner, ordering the crowd to disperse. In the dim light of the April night shots rang out. The soldiers mistook these shots for hostile fire and, in panic, the patrol opened fire into the crowd. When the shooting stopped, two or three minutes later, three men lay dead and 11 others were wounded.

The Coroner's inquest was held a fortnight later and heard comprehensive evidence from many witnesses including soldiers, policemen and victims. This talk will present the testimony of the people of Miltown Malbay, analyse the action of key protagonists and examine the details that led to this atrocity."

The talk will take place on Tuesday, March 10th at the Malbay, Main Street, Miltown Malbay and starts at 8PM. All are welcome.

Admission is 5 euro for non-members.

l CAREFUL NOW: One hundred primary school children from Ennis Educate Together National School, Holy Family Senior School and Gaelscoil Mhíchíl Cíosóg, Ennis attended a Health and Safety Authority ‘Keep Safe’ event at Cois na hAbhna, Galway Road, Ennis.

A range of state agencies and organisations came together to deliver the programme which is directed at 5th and 6th class pupils in the schools. Keep Safe aims to promote safety and community awareness through involving the children in a series of interactive scenarios with a strong safety theme. The agencies and organisations that were involved on the day include the Health and Safety Authority, ESB Networks, An Garda Síochána, Clare County Council Fire Services, Clare County Council Civil Defence, Bus Eireann, Water Safety Ireland, Teagasc, Construction Industry Federation and the Irish Coast Guard.

ROAD CODE COMES TO SHANNON

Clare Youth Service and An Garda Síochána teamed up recently to bring the United Parcel Service, UPS Road Code programme to Shannon.

UPS Foundation’s global road hazard awareness programme involves classroom-based instruction and time ‘behind the wheel’ of a driving simulator. The aim of the programme is to help young people consider how to be safe in and around cars before they even start learning to drive.

Members of the Skyview Youth Club, participants of the Garda Youth Diversion programme, pupils of St. Caimin’s and St. Patrick’s Comprehensive and members of the Community Training Centre of Clare Youth Service all took part.

These 64 young people heard interviews containing first-hand accounts from survivors of road accidents. Accident simulation was then conducted using Virtual Reality headsets, allowing participants to become the passenger of the car involved in a simulated road traffic accident.

Two driving simulators were deployed to give young people the opportunity to drive under various weather and road conditions.

Members of An Garda Siochana attended the Shannon groups to give a presentation on the dangers of driving under the influence. They demonstrated the use of the breathalyser and explained how the drug testing kit worked. Community Gardaí gave accounts of their experience of crashes they were called out to and calling to the house of those left behind from a car crash.

The UPS Road CodeTM, a state-of-the-art interactive program, was developed in the US to bring safe driving techniques and methods to young drivers around the world.

It was designed after US research there showed that an 18-year-old driver is more than three times as likely to be involved in a crash than a 48 year-old and that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among US teenagers, according to the World Health Organisation.

Almost all the young people said the way the information was given and the chance to practise what they had learned on the simulators meant that it was great fun, easy to learn and really interesting considering the topic of road safety seemed a bit boring when the youth workers first mentioned it to them.

GONELLOE National School and Ruan GAA Club were among the beneficiaries of Analog Devices Charity and Community Awards Scheme.

In all, 39 non-profit organisations and social enterprises across Munster received a financial boost thanks to the Analog Devices employee selected community awards scheme.

The annual donations programme enables employees at Analog’s Limerick and Cork sites to nominate their chosen community, voluntary or charitable organisation to receive financial support from the company in recognition for their contribution to the local community.

A broad spectrum of educational, social, charitable and cultural bodies across Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Kerry and Clare benefited from the generous donations programme with donations going to local GAA clubs, primary schools, a Men’s shed group, a Sanctuary programme and numerous well-deserved charities.

Leo McHugh, VP – Marketing & Customer Experience, ADI, said, “Arts, community, education and training, environment, health, social care and sport have all benefited from the impact of our Community Relations Programme. We are delighted to be in a position to recognise and support so many worthwhile groups in their endeavours, many of whom are staffed with volunteers from across the community, including employees of ADI. They are the unsung heroes who are making a difference in our communities.”

Contributions were made across four category types; Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. As a long-standing charity partner of Analog Devices, Milford Hospice received the Platinum donation.

Eight national, regional and local registered charities received Gold and Silver donations. ADAPT HOUSE, CARI and Pieta House all received gold donations. Silver went to Cairdeas Respite Center, Claire’s Wish Foundation, Cork Arc Cancer Support, Jigsaw, St. Gabriel’s School& Centre.

The Bronze recipients, 30 in all, included a wide variety of schools, sporting clubs, social enterprises and needy charitable causes across Munster.

ENTERPRISE Office jobs figures for 2019 show that 120 jobs were created by Local Enterprise Office Clare supported companies last year, up 15% year on year.

Since the establishment of Local Enterprise Office Clare in April 2014, supported enterprises have created 872 net new jobs plus 20 enterprises employing 536 people have progressed to Enterprise Ireland.

Local Enterprise Office Clare currently supports 239 enterprises that employ 1,384.

During 2019, Local Enterprise Office Clare approved funding of €674k to 27 enterpris-

es, a further 34 enterprises were supported with Trading Online Vouchers to improve their ability to conduct business online and 8 enterprises were provided with funding to explore export markets. In addition to financial supports, 123 enterprises availed of the mentor support programme and 1,003 participated in training programmes.

He continued, “The range of supports on offer from the Local Enterprise Office will help anyone seeking to start or grow a small business through highly practical services such as professional business and management training, mentoring, networking opportunities, finance etc.”

The 31 Local Enterprise Offices nationwide, an initiative of the Government of Ireland, are operated in partnership with Enterprise Ireland and the Local Authorities. They provide expert training, mentoring and financial assistance to entrepreneurs and small businesses who may want to start, develop or grow their company.

The Local Enterprise Offices have played a key role in preparing small businesses in for Brexit. This includes Brexit Mentoring, Technical Assistance for Micro Exporting grants, the Brexit SME Scorecard, the Trading Online Voucher Scheme for those selling online internationally and LEAN for Micro enabling small companies to trade more effectively. The Local Enterprise Offices also provide Brexit Customs Training.

ORD has put the new Puma compact crossover on sale in Ireland, and it will be available with just one engine choice — a 125hp 1.0-litre mild-hybrid version of the three-cylinder EcoBoost engine.

Puma customers will be among the first to benefit from Ford’s mild-hybrid architecture – tailored to enhance fuel efficiency while complementing Ford’s fun to drive experience with more powerful and responsive performance.

EcoBoost Hybrid technology enhances Puma’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine with an 11.5 kW belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG).

Replacing the standard alternator, the BISG enables recovery and storage of energy usually lost during braking and coasting to charge a 48‑volt lithium-ion air-cooled battery pack.

The BISG also acts as a motor, integrating with the engine and using the stored energy to provide torque assistance during normal driving and acceleration, as well as running the vehicle’s electrical ancillaries.

“Our 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has already proven that fuel efficiency and performance can go hand-in-hand. Our EcoBoost Hybrid technology takes that to the next level,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “We believe customers are going to love the smooth and urgent power delivery of our EcoBoost Hybrid powertrains just as much as they’ll enjoy less-frequent trips to the

fuel pumps.”

A 125 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine delivers from 131 g/km CO2 emissions and 5.7 l/100 km fuel efficiency WLTP (from 103 g/km and 4.5 l/100 km NEDC)1 and later this year will be available with a new seven-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission that offers seamless gear changes for optimised refinement and fuel efficiency.2 Puma’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost and EcoBoost Hybrid powertrains also feature Ford’s industry-first cylinder deactivation system for a three-cylinder engine, which automatically switches off one the engine’s cylinders when full capacity is not needed, such as when coasting or cruising. The system can disengage or re-engage one cylinder in 14 milliseconds.

A 1.5 diesel variant will be added later in the year, and there are rumours of a sporty, high-performance, variant too.

Puma’s styling belies unprecedented compact crossover practicality, supported by rear stowage solutions that offer practical solutions to everyday storage problems. Puma delivers best-in-class uncompromised load space and rear luggage space of 456 litres. A flexible load compartment can comfortably accommodate a box 112 cm long, 97 cm wide and 43 cm high with the second row of seats folded flat.

Developed to meet and exceed customer requirements for practical luggage space, the Ford MegaBox provides a deep, versatile storage

space with a capacity of 80 litres. Measuring 764 mm wide, 753 mm long and 306 mm deep, the storage solution can house unstable items up to approximately 115 cm tall – such as houseplants – in an upright position. Alternatively, with the lid down, the space can be used to conceal dirty sports equipment or muddy Wellington boots. The Ford MegaBox’s synthetic lining and drain plug in the bottom makes it easy to clean with water.

Puma utilises 12 ultrasonic sensors, three radars and two cameras positioned around the car to deliver a suite of Ford Co-Pilot360 technologies that enhance protection, driving and parking, and are designed to make the driving experience more comfortable, less demanding and safer.3 Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane Centring will help the vehicle maintain a comfortable driving distance from vehicles ahead. The system also helps reduce stress during long road trips by keeping the vehicle centred in its lane and can adjust the vehicle speed to within legal limits by monitoring the roadside and overhead gantries for speed signs.

This is in addition to using information from the on-board navigation system.

New Local Hazard Information functionality – enabled by the FordPass Connect on-board modem – can inform drivers of a hazardous situation on the road ahead, even if the incident is not visible due to a bend in the road or other vehicles.

Local Hazard Information notifications are de-

livered independent of sat-nav – sourced from local authorities, emergency services, and driving data from other vehicles connected to “the cloud”.

Notifications of hazards including road works; broken down vehicles; animals, pedestrians and objects in the carriageway; and even hazardous driving conditions are delivered to the vehicle over-the-air, giving drivers advanced warning of developing situations beyond their field of vision.

HEN Conner Hegarty walked the hallways of St Flannan’s College as a first-year student, winning a Harty Cup medal was a dream, on Sunday it became a reality.

It could have been the 21 winning Harty Cup panels whose photos adorn the walls of St Flannan’s College that made the dream fester for Hegarty - or the introduction to Brendan Bugler - but regardless it has always been in his mind.

Speaking to The Clare Echo in the lead up to the decider, Conner said that each player’s hurley was “basically an extension of our arm” in the lead up to the big day. Their hard work finally paid off on Sunday as they secured a three-point win over CBC Cork and Hegarty

was a relieved figure. “We didn’t feel any pressure, we knew what we had and with the players we have we knew we could grind out a victory, no matter what. We’ve left too many finals behind us in the past, it wasn’t going to be the case today”.

Joy and pride was etched on his face but a shoulder injury in the final moments added to the range of emotions being experienced by the Inagh/Kilnamona teenager.

“I’m feeling sore at the moment,” he said. Such was the joint captain’s determination that management were unable to take him off even though he spent two minutes receiving treatment on the field. “Mr O’Grady held on to me but I told him I wasn’t leaving the pitch, then they got a penalty during it”.

Controlling the emotions has been a constant with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the fixture due to inclement weather conditions. “We were doing the warm up here two weeks ago and when it was called off everyone was so disappointed, I nearly felt like crying,

stressed the role of every single panel member. “The lads were excellent from number one to 15 and the few lads that came on. As I alluded to in my speech, the lads in training, some of them weren’t lucky enough to get a jersey, the competition in training has been unbelievable, it’s brilliant for them too”.

‘Everything after Harty is a bonus’

ORDINARILY teachers and students are not enthused about returning to school after Christmas but Kevin O’Grady has found an extra pep in his step at St Flannan’s College over recent weeks.

A former coach to the Clare U21 hurlers under Donal Moloney and John Carmody, the history teacher told The Clare Echo that this team weren’t burdened by the rich history St Flannan’s hold in the Harty Cup. “The school setting and the buzz in the school, it doesn’t feel like you’re going to work, you’re going in with a great group of lads and a great group of the staff in there, it’s as good as anything as we’ve done, there is a great history within the school, every year is a new year and there is no point looking in the past”.

Weather conditions were the main talking point in advance of their win over CBC Cork as the tie was postponed not once but twice. It increased the work-load on him as manager but he pointed out that the messages imparted by him and fellow selectors Brendan Bugler, Mike Kelly and Shane McCarthy negated the effect the deferrals had on their panel.

“One of the things at the start of year was that we said we would try and focus on the things that we could control, one of the things we can’t control is the weather, there was no point even talking about it no more than referee decisions. Control the stuff you can control like your first touch, catching the ball, finishing your scores, you can’t control the weather or the other team. We had worked very hard on that, when things came up such as the weather we were able to adapt very easily”.

Facing into the All-Ireland series is next on the horizon but it didn’t come into their focus at all, the ex Crusheen and Tulla coach admitted. “The Harty Cup was the goal at the start of the year, everything else was a bonus”.

LARE’S group stage run in the Allianz National Hurling League is as good as can be but David McInerney issued the reminder that the real time for judgement is in the summer months.

Speaking on Sunday after helping Clare to a hurling league semi-final date after defeating Dublin by nine points, midfielder David McInerney said. “It’s nice to be unbeaten but I think every team is focusing on the summer. The League is good and we are happy with how we are working so far and we will just take every game as it comes”.

A member of Clare’s backline over the last eight years, the Tulla man was asked if he is enjoying the switch to midfield. “It’s something different. I have played a small bit there with the club but it’s totally different to club hurling. I am still trying to find myself out there. I am enjoying being beside

Tony [Kelly] and in front of Pat [O’Connor] and a few of the boys.”

Reflecting on his team’s impressive 27-point tally, he said “The forwards were moving well today, their work rate was excellent. Off the ball, their tackling was excellent”. McInerney continued, “There are lads sticking their hands up for selection and in fairness to the management they are giving them their chance. It’s great to see competition for places”.

Asked if there had been harsh works spoken at half time after letting a six point lead slip, the Ennis-based primary teacher said, “We knew ourselves that ten minutes before the half we kind of took the foot off the gas and we paid for it... In fairness after the break we stepped up and I thought we played well for the rest of the game”.

While admitting that new management has freshened things up, David noted that under Brian Lohan there is extra emphasis on hitting the full-forward line. “We are trying to look for the full forward line a bit more but at the same time the lads in the half forward line are doing well also. We are mixing it up and so far it’s going well.

I WOKE on Sunday morning feeling under the weather and feeling sorry for myself, man flu my wife called it, and decided to give the trip to Cavan a miss.

I was never as sorry Sunday evening. I sat in the car glued to the radio on Sunday with not a fingernail left on my hands, begging for the final whistle to blow. The Clare FM commentary from Joe and Syl played a big part in it. They kicked and passed every ball and the passion they have for football and their county flowed out through the radio. And then the game finally finished and I jumped around in the car as if I had kicked the winning score myself. What a fantastic victory.

It just so happens Clare boss Colm Collins came to my garage on Monday to get something done with his van. He had a smile as wide as the River Shannon, and rightly so.

He spoke so proudly of his troops, of the work they had put in all week in a bid to get a result against Cavan - on

the field and off. All the work was needed because we had only two points to show after our four previous outings - we needed a win and got it. From the word go Clare went for that win.

They pushed right up on their kickouts and went man for man marking, worked seriously hard on turnovers and then attacked with pace. Our goal came from a turnover with Joe McCann - who I mentioned last week was one to watch - scoring a cracker.

On the commentary Cian O’Dea, Alan Sweeney, Gordon Kelly and Pierce Lillis were mentioned as often as the lads up front which shows where the scores originated from. For all that work, we had a 1-08 to 0-05 point lead at half time. It’s not often we can say that but it’s not often we attack from the start which is what I’ve been begging for. It also shows that when we do push the accelerator early, we are well capable of executing our gameplan and dictating the pace.

In the second half Cavan came out guns blazing and put five rapid points on the score board to our two but we really did weather the storm.

Stephen Ryan in goals got his kick-outs tidied up and steadied the ship. Up front we got some great scores from play. It’s brilliant to see Eoin Cleary (pictured) playing his way into form with David Tubridy throwing over his usual

few points. Midfield stood tall. Ciaran Russell is playing excellent stuff this year and Cathal O’Connor appears to have returned to his best, taking high ball after high ball out of defence when Cavan threw the kitchen sink at us seeking that goal they knew they needed to get a result.

All in all, it was a huge panel effort and a vital result to stay up. Time and time again Colm gets the best out of these boys and now gives us new hope and fighting chance of staying in Division 2.

Next up is Fermanagh, a very defensive and very physically strong team. Last year they defeated Clare by 0-12 to 0-09 and we failed to really penetrate their defensive structures.

Pace going forward with numbers might be our best chance of beating them in my opinion but let’s see what Colm and his management team come up with.

One thing we can be sure about is they’ll be working seriously hard over the next fortnight to find two more points, and if we can do it against bottom-of-the-table Fermanagh, it will put us in perfect position to retain our Division 2 status.

NE Ennistymon priest was among the winning greyhound owners in Galway following the weekend’s racing action.

Three semi-finals of the Seachtain na Gaeilege novice 350 yards stake featured in Friday’s Galway ten race card.

The A3 graded ninth contest over 525 yards was the top graded contest of the night, the incessant rain led to the track being rated as -.15 and -.30 slow for the two and four bend trips.

Maroon Moher was the winner in the A5 graded contest which was the seventh race on the card. Owned by Fr Willie Cummins of Ennistymon (pictured) and trained by Liscannor’s Declan McDonagh, he wore down the gallant pace setter Heathlawn O’Hara to register his maiden success at the fourth attempt by two lengths in 29.69. From the third bend, Maroon Moher bridged the gap with every stride and the writing was on the wall as they rounded the home bend.

Little doubt surrounded the outcome of the third semi-final as from the opening bend, Buttys Bengal was on top. From the Shannon syndicate, Buttys-Buckos, he was only fifth best away as the traps rose as Clydagh Ruby emerged in front on the wide. Buttys Bengal went through the gears and rounding the opening bend led Clydagh Ruby by over three lengths. The Ger Holian trained runner powered to a superb ten and a quarter length success in 19.10.

of Broadford owned Killuran Tiny was very smartly into his stride and approaching the opening bend he led Aspen by over two lengths with four further lengths back to Kitmins Benjamin in third place as they entered the back straight.

Racing along the back Killuran Tiny was making the best of his way home out front but from the crown of the home bend Aspen began to gradually bridge the deficit. Railing well though Killuran Tiny began to tread water off the final bend but the line just arrived in time to claim a short head verdict over Aspen in 29.71.

Inagh owner trainer Noel Hehir made the long trip to Tralee worthwhile on Friday night last when his Coolavanny Kyser was a ten and a half length winner of race eleven in a very good time of 28.58 for the 525 yards trip.

Five gold for Ennis swimmers

LEAH O’Connor, Reuben Haugh, Claudia Haugh, Jack Dilleen and Lewis O’Dwyer all won gold as Ennis Swimming Club hosted the Munster Development 2 Meet on Sunday as 250 swimmers competed.

Lianda McGuire, Claudia Haugh, Fatima Sanchez, Tadhg Conway, Jude Collins, Olivia Cosgrove, Ella Taylor, Jamie Cantillon and Noah Doherty all got their hands on silver while picking up bronze were Leah O’Connor, Edith Haugh, Reuben Haugh, TJ Moore, Olivia Cosgrove, Ciara Mulligan and Bruno Sanchez.

Meanwhile, a bake sale for the Irish Heart Foundation in memory of late coach, Niall Cosgrove raised over €350.

LARE’S Youths have qualified for the Inter League Youths Cup semi-finals coming from behind to dethrone All-Ireland champions Limerick, writes Páraic McMahon. In just their second outing of the competition, Clare found themselves behind with fifteen minutes on the clock. Ronan O’Dwyer was on the receiving end of a one-two pass and somehow managed to roof the ball to the top left corner of Kyle O’Callaghan’s net from distance.

However their response was superb. A Jamie Stack free on the edge of the box took a deflection and hit the back of the net to put the visitors straight back on level terms. They had to wait until the sixtieth minute to stick their noses in front.

Scott Kirkland and Ben O’Neill managed to work the ball forward before Callum Hussey’s first shot was blocked, Kirkland headed the ball back in his direction and he superbly volleyed the ball to the top left corner of the net to send Clare on their way to the semi-finals.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, manager Ruairí Price maintained it was “a fully deserved victory”.

He felt the lessons learned in their 2-1 defeat to Galway last month stood to them. “There was no nonsense defending there at stages last Sunday, we made sure that we cleared our lines and got on with the game, we didn’t let the ball bounce like

we did against Galway, we picked up our men for the corners which led to silly goals, we learned from our mistakes and brought it into the Limerick game”.

Price believed the positive start from their neighbours aided Clare’s challenge. “They are the All-Ireland champions and we expected them to play brightly and well. They did that and got a deserved early goal. The best thing about the game was that they scored early, you can recover from an early goal, you can’t really recover from a goal scored with five minutes to go, you’re throwing everything at them then. I thought once the goal went in, we dusted ourselves down and got the equaliser within a minute, from there we won every breaking ball, all the headers and tackles, we stopped them playing and that’s credit to the boys.”

With Bridge Utd competing in the FAI Youths Cup this weekend, the Shannon man confirmed they have taken a week off from training to allow players focus on their club commitments.

Their opponents for the semi-final have yet to be drawn but Ruairí said they will study all potential opponents before then. “We’re the first team through, the other quarter-finals haven’t been played so we can sit back, relax and when we see the draw we can check out who we get and go watch them, that is the beauty of the position we’re in that we can watch who we play next and that is in our favour”.

Crosby wins National Mia’s a smash hit 400m title

C

ATHAL Crosbie has won the Senior 400m for the first time at the Irish Life Health National Indoor Athletics Championships.

Crosbie held off the challenge of Andrew Mellon and former European finalist Brian Gregan to win the 400m in a time of 47.93 in one of the races of the day in the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena. The Ennis Track sprinter was seconds ahead of Mellon (48.02) in a thrilling finish.

Already the 2020 Intervarsities and U23 Champion, Cratloe’s Cathal held off the two experienced athletes to take gold. During his U23 success at the end of January, Cathal finished in a time of 48.33.

The exciting dash for the finish saw the UL student first home, Gregan looked poised to make a break but his two year long injury layoff seemed to hinder his final challenge.

Elsewhere Alex O’Neill had success in her first outing with Providence State University. They won the Big East Title in the 800m. The Quin athlete has been on a scholarship in the US since August.

Improve long-range putting

T

HE two main key elements needed to get your ball close to the hole for a longer putt, is achieving good pace along with judging the best line to start your ball along. The pace of the putt in particular is the key aspect to focus on if you want to improve getting the ball closer to the hole. The length of the arc of your putting stroke is a key element to work on if you are to achieve consistent pace, particularly the length of your backswing.

Length of your backswing - Over the years I’ve seen all types of putting techniques and I’ve learned that we all have our own style, however I do believe for a longer putt you must extend the length of your backswing to help you to effortlessly get your ball to reach the hole. I often see golfers using the same length of a backswing for a 15ft putt as they would use for a 40ft putt. However these golfers have a very frantic stroke and achieving good pace is usually a struggle.

Think about your backstroke like an elastic band - if you want it to fly further you simply need to stretch the band more before you let go. The same goes for your backstroke. Years ago I played The European Club with friends. A Par 4 on the back nine has a green which is 116 yards long so for fun we all placed a ball at the back edge and we tried to hit a putt and reach the front edge where the pin was located. None of my friends could even reach halfway to the front because they all used too short of a backswing, it isn’t possible to achieve enough clubhead speed unless your extend your backstroke. I took a much longer backswing (half a full swing) and I managed to get my ball within 20 feet of the front.

Depending on the length of the long putt you need to use enough of a backstroke to ensure you can effortlessly reach your target. Once you get comfortable with extending your stroke you can then focus on the feel of how hard you need to strike the ball and begin to see a big improvement in the pace of your longer putts. Initial direction is also key - starting your ball on the correct line is obviously also vital to getting a long putt relatively close to the hole. I would say 70% of the importance would be the pace and 30% would be

choosing the correct line.

Many golfers don’t allow enough break on their putts and Harold Swartz, the short game guru, claims golfers underestimate the break by at least 30%.

When you are reading the line of a putt the crucial area to focus on is the end of the overall putt.

This is when the ball is losing pace dramatically, therefore it will take a lot more break compared to the beginning of the putt. Remember for a longer putt you are striking the ball with a lot of force at impact, therefore your ball will be moving at its maximum speed early in the putt and it will not break much unless there is a severe slope early in the putt. Even if the slope is severe early in the putt you might allow less than half the break as you would if that slope was at the end of the putt.

Reading greens correctly is a skill that can be improved and it is also a key element of improving your putting in particular with longer putts. I often use the drill like in the attached image where you place a line of golf tees to the high side of the hole. You simply hit towards the tee you think is the correct starting point of the putt and you will see if you are indeed allowing enough break.

Using this drill will help you to discover if you are under reading or over reading the breaks on the greens. If you do struggle with reading greens visit your local PGA Golf Professional to show you how to improve your green reading with some additional simple tips. Next time you’re practicing your long putts try using a longer smoother putting stroke and focus on a good tempo and feel that will improve the pace of your longer putts.

Once you begin to see your pace improving then work on perfecting the line.

ENNIS’ Mia Gavin collected a national junior tennis title in Galway last weekend.

Twelve year old Mia didn’t let the older years of her competitors stop her as she produced some impressive performances at the Ireland Tour 500 Graded Junior Indoors Tennis Tournament held at Galway Tennis Club.

Mia made her way to the semi-finals of the girls U14 competition where her opponent was thirteen year old Sorcha Ellen O’Keeffe of Castleknock Tennis Club in Dublin. Although Mia was down 2-5 in the first set against the number two seeded competitor, she battled back to win 7-6 and won the second set 6-3 to advance to the finals.

As the number one seeded player in the competition, the presence of fourteen year old Caroline Danaher of Donnybrook Tennis Club in the final was of little surprise. Competing against the national title winner didn’t deter Galvin who won the first set 6-4.

She trailed 2-5 in the second seat but once again showed tremendous resilience to claim a 7-6 second set win which subsequently secured the title.
