e are well underway into our holiday season and I would like to take this time to wish you all a Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays.

Cherish these quality times with family and friends. While it is great to spend time with loved ones and family it is also a time to reflect on those who are no longer with us. For some this is a bittersweet time of year, remember to always keep smiling memories alive.

I have to extend a very special thank you to the individuals working very hard behind the scenes to make The Clairemont Times possible. I am very grateful and fortunate to work with some incredibly talented individuals, please

know it does not go unnoticed. You all are great at what you do and it shows.

I wrote recently when you do something you truly enjoy it is not work and that is exactly how I feel about The Clairemont Times. The Times is building momentum and 2012 is going to be even better. Exciting things are around the corner for both the print edition and clairemonttimes.com. Stay tuned.

Opinions A Stress Free Holiday Season Greetings Clairemont Faithful!

It appears we have made it through our first real holiday test and have survived the over-eating of Thanksgiving. One could argue that we also made it through all the candy of Halloween, but Halloween cannot be held to the same standards as Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas & New Year’s Eve. Why you ask. Well it comes down to one simple factor: FAMILY. Love them, hate them, argue with them, or embrace them, it does not matter, they are your family and hopefully you will be spending time together during the month of December.

Which begs the question “If they were not my family, would I even spend time with them???” (This could apply to your coworkers as well but that topic is

for another day). The answer for most people is probably...well, let’s just not answer that question.

I personally love my family but spending a lot of time with my ENTIRE family for an extended period of time can just be dangerous. And then of course there are the new in-laws and all their family quirks.

From a crazy grandmother that loves her cup of “juice” to the guncle that always brings his male roommate with him to all family functions. Throw in a couple of toddler nieces and nephews with just a dash of teenage cousins that seem angry all the time, and you have a recipe for a truly unforgettable family holiday.

Again, I want to emphasize that I love my family dearly and you probably do too which is great. But I’m sure you all have a story or two about a family holiday gone awry. I do not want to bash spending time with family, in fact, I think we should spend the holidays with loved ones (notice I didn’t necessarily say “family” there). So here are just a few ways to reduce a little holiday stress when you think you are about to hit your boiling point:

- Hit up the Eggnog (or any adult beverages of your choice, but do so in moderation just to take the edge off. You do not want to end up being the focal point of future holiday stories) - Watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and be thankful crazy cousin Eddy is just a fictional character (hopefully!).

- Take a walk and don’t forget the dog, we live in San Diego for Pete’s sake it’s not that COLD. - Workout prior to any potentially stressful gatherings, give that negative energy an outlet.

- Choose your battles carefully, think before you act and ask yourself this question “Is it worth it???” This can be especially true when it comes to your significant other and their family. Remember you chose to be in the relationship.

- Don’t overdo it on the holiday goodies; feeling heavy and bloated will not help you find peace.

- When all is said and done simply enjoy spending time with loved ones!!!

The Track -by Jared Riddle One of my favorite movies is “The Man from Snowy River”. In it there’s a line delivered by an old codger to the young hero when he’s giving him his pick of horses.

“A man without a horse is like a man without legs”, he says. The line is given more power, and a little bit of irony, since the speaker has a peg leg himself. When I was a kid, we felt the same way about our bikes.

While I could still walk to Lindbergh Park or around the block to a friend’s house, even get to school or the store without one, life didn’t really start until that year that I got my Red Schwinn. Not only did the quality of my life improve, but the pace at which I lived quickened. The trip to Stump’s Market (now Carnival) would only take 3 min instead of the 20 that walking would require. The trip from home to school took 5 minutes, but the return trip only took 2 thanks to “The Hill”. In our neighborhood, that is what the blocks of Salizar between Ashford and Armstrong were called.

And while “The Hill” was thrilling as an eight year old, it couldn’t compete with “The Track”.

In the back of the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center is a Bike track. Anyone Clairemont local is aware of it. What you might not know is there was a time, before helmet laws, that the track was not fenced in. Any given Saturday, or weekday during the summer, the track would be used by the neighborhood.

The Adult Book Club will meet on the 1st Wednesday of every month at 6:00 p.m. Meetings will occur at the library. Please read the book before the meeting. Books are available at the circulation desk.

Free Art Class for Children Ages 6-12 12/7/11 4:00 PM Robert, the instructor, is a self taught local artist born and raised in San Diego. He has always had a love for nature and animals and wanted to portray them through art. He started painting with watercolors and moved on to acrylic paints. He enjoys painting on many different types of objects i.e. sea shells, rocks, wood, crafts, canvas and murals. Public libraries have been a great source of reference pictures and enjoyment for him through the years. Art lessons will be a great way to share and give back to the community.

I’ll never forget my first run.

Perched atop the initial slope, with the starting gate holding my front tire in place, my stomach churned with butterflies. I was staring down a grade just shy of 90 degrees according to my estimate.

Luckily, I didn’t have much time to reconsider the choices that had brought me to this point. My friend dropped the gate and so I rocketed faster than I imagined possible. Hardly able to pedal fast enough to keep forward propulsion, cruising through the first banking turn was less a decision than a reality forced on me by the laws of physics and poor gear ratios. As I leaned into the hairpin I thought my body was experiencing g-forces similar to a fighter pilot. I was certain my speed reached 100 mph, even though in probably stayed in the teens. Launching inches into the air over the table top, I was a master in my mind.

Fueled by the adrenaline coursing through my veins and the Gator Gum flavoring my spit, I rattled to the finish line, winded but exhilarated and ready to do it all again.

These are the kinds of things that stick with me, and they are the reason I am grateful to still live in Clairemont. My sons will be able to experience most of the things that I enjoyed. Things have changed a little, for sure. Storefronts change and new streetlights get put up, but the essence of our community is embodied in these shared spaces, like Kearny Rec. We value our community and recognize the benefit of living in a neighborhood where generations are cemented by common experiences. “The Track” is still there, and I hope it stays forever.

Let’s Support Clairemont This Holiday Season The holiday season is a time of celebration and giving, and as the year comes to a close, it is also a time of reflection. While 2011 has brought some challenges, I believe that we have much to be thankful for, especially here in Clairemont. I am honored to represent an area with a strong sense of community. The people of Clairemont stick together; we’re proud of our neighborhood.

As we head into the busiest shopping time of the year, I’m urging everyone to “shop small” this holiday season. Let’s support local Clairemont businesses, because their success is crucial to the success of Clairemont. These businesses are the backbone of our community; they are first to step up and fill a need in our neighborhood, like sponsoring Clairemont Family Days or donating money or goods to local schools.

The benefits of shopping small extend beyond the success of the businesses. When we shop small, sales taxes stay local and the city has more money for core services, like filling potholes or hiring police officers. When local businesses grow, they hire local employees and put more San Diegans back to work.

San Diego is home to more than 90,000 small businesses and locally-owned franchises. This year, instead of picking up gift cards to national chains, try gift certificates to local stores, like the Sandwich Emporium or Ace Hardware. Baking holiday treats? Skip the grocery store and get supplies at a local business, like Do It with Icing on Clairemont Mesa Blvd.

As I wrap up my first year at City Hall, I want to say thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Councilmember. It has been a busy year, and my staff and I are looking forward to what 2012 will bring.

Local Seniors Get New Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms Councilmember Zapf urges fire safety this holiday season Local seniors will have new smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed in their homes, thanks to Councilmember Lorie Zapf, the Burn Institute, and a volunteer coalition of community organizations. More than 80 seniors will benefit from the Burn Institute’s Senior Smoke Alarm program just in time for the holidays, when fireplaces, heaters and candles can increase the risk of house fires and carbon monoxide leaks.

“Working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are important fixtures in every home, and especially in the homes of our seniors,” said Councilmember Zapf. According to national safety statistics, adults ages 65 and older are two times more likely to die in a home fire than any other population group, and that risk quadruples for those over the age of 75.

The Burn Institute estimates that thousands of seniors throughout San Diego live in homes without working smoke alarms, and even more lack carbon monoxide detectors. Since July 2011, California law requires working carbon monoxide detectors in all single-family homes that have attached garages, fireplaces, or appliances that burn fossil fuels.

“One way seniors can improve the chances of escaping a home fire is by making sure their home is equipped with a working smoke alarm, and to maintain those alarms by changing the batteries at least once a year,” said James Floros, Burn Institute Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Zapf is hoping that Saturday’s event will bring awareness about fire safety for all homeowners this holiday season. “I hope that everyone takes a moment to check and replace the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes,” said Zapf. “It’s quick, it’s easy, and it can save your life.”

Councilmember Zapf would like to thank all the organizations who have volunteered to make this program possible, including the Burn Institute, Bayside Community Center, Jewish Family Service, A Better Solution HomeCare, and Keepsake Companions.

Clocks, Trees & Cell Phone Towers At the November Clairemont Community Planning Group (CCPG) meeting an item on the agenda was about an existing cell phone tower on Mt Ada Road in Clairemont. This particular tower has probably been there for close to 20 years. I guess when you are not looking for such things you don’t really notice them; however the members of the CCPG were well aware of it.

At roughly 120ft in height I am now definitely aware of this structure, in fact I find myself seeing cell towers all over the place now. Some are small; some are large but make no mistake if you look you can find them.

Since the majority of us are all carrying some sort of device to communicate at a moment’s notice I got to thinking about the aesthetic price we pay for convenience. A design presented to the committee and the public in attendance at the meeting was quite informative. The architect showed a couple different types of poles but for the most part all the same and still the same height.

The cordial back and forth between the group representing the cell tower and the CCPG was interesting. An idea from some of the committee members was how about just getting rid of the pole entirely and maybe have two 60 foot poles in different locations. A fine solution I thought and still do, but that would mean finding another site for the second 60 ft pole. Another idea from a committee member was take it down entirely and stop polluting the skyline, again a good idea but probably not going to happen.

In the end the issue is not resolved by any stretch. I am of the opinion it will be multiple months if not a year before the final plans are approved.

As this particular project continues on I will update you, although I encourage residents to attend these CCPG meetings to learn about such developments in our community.

The Linda Vista Solution After listening to the presentation then actually seeing the structure I remembered a news piece about this exact same issue in Linda Vista. They too had a cell phone tower issue only they solved it and it is now a landmark clock tower at the corners of Genesee and Linda Vista Roads.

The Linda Vista Planning Group fought long and hard for a couple years and in the end they got what they wanted. The cell tower is now the “clock tower” and is a functioning piece of the community and not just a sterile pole. It really is a win win for the community a cell tower and a landmark clock tower for future generations to admire. Interesting note as well, if you look at the large flag pole on the same corner again mixed use, flag pole and a cell tower.

If local residents and businesses attend these meetings amicable solutions can be reached. Linda Vista has proven this. Public input from the community is vital to such success stories.

Imperial Beach With my new found interest in cell phone tower designs (thank you Google) I have found today’s technology can mask these poles in quite interesting ways. From Saguaro trees in the Arizona desert to Water Tower looking structures in the Midwest.

Locally, I found a couple of other designs on a trip down to Imperial Beach (see accompanying pictures). One is quite pathetic it is the typical tall cell phone tower with what looks like some palm frawns crazy glued at the top. Another one two blocks away is actually pretty realistic looking. Even though it is tree-like there are no other like specimens in the park, but again it does look better than sterile. This particular one also has lights on it so again dual functionality for the park and safety at night.

The point of this expose you might ask? I am trying to encourage residents to be involved and attend future CCPG meetings. With the exception of December (no meeting) the group meets the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Livewell San Diego Center, 4425 Bannock Ave, 92117 6:30pm. I cannot guarantee such an interesting meeting as this latest one but I can guarantee you will walk away with some new information about your community.

Travel Tips for the Holidays appy Holidays to you all! I hope 2011 has been good to you. Hard to believe that another year is almost over and 2012 is quickly approaching. I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing that already and just want to enjoy the season. I don’t blame you.

For this month’s article, I thought I would focus on helpful travel tips to make the holiday season a bit less stressful for those having to travel. Just wanted to list a few pieces of advice that I hope you will find useful.

When preparing for your trip, don’t forget to go online and tell the US Postal Service (www.usps.org) to hold your mail while you’re away. It’s free and safe, plus this way your mail does not accumulate in your mailbox and alert people that you are not home. Using an automatic timer to turn on and off the outdoor lights is also a good idea.

Don’t forget to print out or write down the confirmation number to your flight itinerary. I realize that most of us likely use electronic tickets when we travel and

we expect that our confirmation number is trustily stored in the airline database. But, I always feel better having an itinerary printed out just in case the computers are not cooperating at the airport. Better yet, if you can, check-in online prior to arriving at the airport.

Most airlines offer this convenient and free service 24 hours in advance of your departure time. Keep in mind the usual guideline of being at the airport an hour in advance of departure for domestic flights and two hours in advance of departure for international flights.

When traveling with small children, I leave it to you parents out there to decide what your child’s attention span is, but from my own experience, carrying-on any sort of story books, puzzles, coloring books or favorite toy to keep them engaged and occupied are key. If you have a smartphone or tablet that they can watch videos or play games on that is definitely helpful, too. We’ve all experiences the crying babies (whether they are our own or someone else’s). For those who don’t have kids and what to shoot a stink eye at the parents to calm their kid down, please realize that the child’s screaming & crying is probably more stressful on the parent than you. For those parents who allow your kids to kick the back of the seat in front of them, you deserve the stink eye!

Oh, and don’t forget the snacks. My son won’t eat when we’re at home, but as soon as we get on the road, he wants a snack. So, it’s become second nature for me to pack some goldfish crackers or pretzels, a lollipop, some fresh fruit or dried fruit, baby carrots, water/milk/ juice, etc. Basically, anything that your little one enjoys, bring it in bunches & surprise them with a special sweet treat that they don’t often get. This might be your handy get-out-of-jail free card for when he/she is about to go stir-crazy. You just never know how traffic might be (if you’re driving) or if they might be flight delays (if you’re flying), so it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. Plus, airlines aren’t serving food nowadays anyway, so what your kids don’t eat, you can eat!

Last, but not least, there’s the mental preparation that you must undergo prying to visiting family and friends. I hope you all have family & friends that you look forward to seeing and spending time with. However, let’s be realistic and recognize that there’s always someone that you don’t look forward to seeing as much.

Just remember there’s a reason you have to travel to see him/her. They don’t live near you! That’s a good thing, right?! So, to keep the peace, just try to put it in perspective and be happy that the visit is temporary and it’ll all be over soon. At least, that’s what I tell myself…

Anyway, enjoy the season! Here’s wishing you all safe & smooth travels to wherever the holidays may take you.

“Ready, Set, Go!” approach to disaster planning A disaster like a wildfire can leave people feeling threatened and helpless. But it does not have to. The San Diego FireRescue Department recommends a “Ready, Set, Go!” approach to disaster planning.

Ready Prepare your property now. Create defensible space by clearing brush away from your home. Use fire-resistant landscaping. Fire harden your home; box the eaves, and put wire mesh over all attic vents to keep embers from flying in.

In 2007, lingering embers in the attic ignited many homes after the fire had passed.

Every household should have an evacuation plan and everyone in the family

should know at least two routes out of the community.

Have a checklist of essential supplies and personal items to pack and take with you.

Those items include medication needed by each member of the family, including your pets; important personal papers, special photos, essential valuables, identification for all family members, copies of your

insurance and health records, your laptop, hard drive and/or flash drive. You will also need changes of clothing, toiletries, closed toe shoes, jackets and pet supplies.

Set If fire approaches, alert family and neighbors.

Stay tuned to TV or radio for updates.

Gather up flammable items outside (patio furniture, toys, etc.) and bring them indoors or put them in your pool.

Do NOT leave sprinklers on or water running – they can bring down water pressure critical for firefighting.

Leave lights on, close the windows and doors but do not lock them.

Back your car into the garage or driveway.

Use your checklist to pack your vehicle.

Keep your pets nearby.

Turn off propane tanks and move barbecues away from the house and fence.

Turn off air conditioning.

Clear objects from the side of the house.

Go! Don’t wait for an order to evacuate.

Leave early enough to avoid being caught in fire, smoke or traffic.

And if you are advised to leave, go. Do not hesitate.
