How will it be | Como va a ser Gowanus is a resilient neighborhood to sea-level rise and flooding. Water is the main shaper of space and landscape rendering the Gowanus Canal as the heart of the community.

On Water is the collectivization of cohabitating with water.

Spaces transform and flow with water, giving them unique qualities, creating places, modifying the landscape and blurring the limits between the built environment and nature. Water draws time in the materials and it always finds itself, its natural cycle is never interrupted.

The city evolves to aid the ecosystem, tending to the needs of the planet. We find ourselves in constant movement and transformation. We will start to adapt our life on water and redefine its true value. We will live with water, with it being a fundamental actor in the urbanism of cities, where architecture will facilitate this ecocentric relationship.

La ciudad evoluciona para las necesidades del planeta y coexistir sin dañar el ecosistema. Nos encontramos en constante movimiento y transformación e iniciaremos a adaptar nuestra vida en el agua y darle el valor que realmente se merece. Viviremos con el agua y formará parte primordial en el urbanismo de las ciudades, donde la arquitectura facilitará esta relación ecocentrista.

Humanity has grown over the years regarding our planet as an inexhaustible source of resources. Humanity’s hubris expects the atmosphere to absorb the unlimited contaminants they emit, that ecosystems will regenerate as soon as they’re destroyed. In the coming years the water cycle will undergo fundamental changes, the survivors of the new ecosystems will need to adapt to the absence of water. Their way of life will be centered in developing without the very resource that grants life on this planet.

The planet has left behind the scale of geological time. This comes as a consequence of humanity becoming a dictating force for natural cycle rates at which the planet regenerates.

We forget that the creator of life itself is water.

Water speaks to us about the vitality of time, space and of the respect we have lost in the way we inhabit. Let us return to nature, let us give time, respect to what is found on this planet and begin to understand the cycles of life.

La humanidad ha crecido a lo largo de los años considerando a nuestro planeta como una fuente inagotable de recursos.

La soberbia de la humanidad espera que la atmósfera absorba los contaminantes ilimitados que emiten, que los ecosistemas se regeneren tan pronto como los destruyen. En los próximos años el agua sufrirá cambios fundamentales, los sobrevivientes en los nuevos ecosistemas que se crearan se adaptaran a la ausencia del agua. Su estilo de vida se basará en desarrollarse careciendo del recurso mismo que otorga la vida.

El planeta ha dejado atrás la escala del tiempo geológico, a consecuencia de la humanidad convirtiéndose en una fuerza que erróneamente dicta el ritmo en el que el planeta se regenera. Olvidamos que la creadora de la vida como la conocemos es el agua.

This is a holistic revitalization of an ecosystem along with its built environment. Through the use of chinampas and a green corridor this project looks to aid a community who is willing to fight for a better life.

Water will be cleaned and filtered to later be used by the locals to flush toilets, ease the laundry water demand or to maintain public spaces. Water will be retained when rain comes to ease the flooding, and food will be grown, providing the possibility for allotments further down the line. All three typologies will be walkable and accessible enabling educational exchange.

Una revitalización holística de gran alcance en los ecosistemas, comunidades y estilos de vida. On Water permitirá que las distintas personas crezcan con ella creando un mejor estilo de vida. Tendrán la capacidad de adaptación a condiciones nuevas y cambiantes. On Water will be providing new and improved distributions of streets and facades, by incorporating spaces for recreation and communitary exchange. Rendering new and intuitive routes along the neighborhood, the value of the canal will change for its people. The implementation of new second floor pedestrian bridges will further improve the canal interaction and vitality.

Al incorporar nuevos espacios para la recreación y la reunión de la comunidad, On Water proveerá nuevas distribuciones de fachadas y calles, permitiendo la generación de nuevas rutas de desplazamiento intuitivas. Every strategy proposed will act towards the revitalization of the ecosystem, consequently revitalizing the community.

Leisure and educational activities may be reintroduced into the canal based upon the development and implementation of strategies.

The three steps that guide our design strategy are also representative of the three scales in which we will intervene: individual, collective and systemic. There will be three chinampa typologies, where each one of these tends to one of the problems. Cleaning chinampas address water pollution, Adaptive chinampas tackle sea level rise and water scarcity and Revitalizing chinampas complete the cycle by providing local spaces for growth and community.

Los tres pasos que guían nuestra metodología de diseño también representan las tres escalas en las que se desarrolla el proyecto: indiviual, colectivo y sistémico. Habrá tres tipologías de chinampa, donde cada una de estas responde a uno de los problemas. The Cleaning Chinampa will work with four types of filtration systems: oysters, sand filters, endemic plants, and enzymes and bacteria. Each of these responds to a specific contaminant found in the canal water.

They will work as natural barriers, similar to how mangroves act in the ocean. The implementation will start on the ends of the canal to attend the immediate risk, continuing in the middle thus reducing the impact sea-level rise has on the community.

In order for our project to be viable, we’ve identified all the organizations, industries and people who are related and thereby affected by the project. We classified them in four sectors: private, public, local and governmental.

Private: The investors, the real estate developers.

Local: Gowanus’ organizations dedicated to preserve it and provide a better environment for the growth of the people.

Government: Local government, the district government and the Canal Conservancy Group (CAG). They are key in the development of Pay for Success.

by Pay for Success, which is an investment mechanism that pays back investors when the project succeeds based on the compliance of certain metrics determined through an external evaluation.

This motivates investors, which in this case are the developers, to be involved with the project and its objectives.

The measurability of the project will be established by the the positive impact it will have on the people who inhabit Gowanus, and by in the amount of water cleaned, retained and redirected. This is an assurance of the mitigation of the main problems. The return of endemic species such as: oysters, shad, sturgeon, brook trout, otters, beavers and mink, will act as biological indicators that allow not only us and the evaluators, but the community to see that the ecosystem is being restored. The cleaning microorganisms will also act as bioindicators, the healthier the water the more protozoa it wil contain. The cleaner the water, the more species, flora and fauna can then develop, thus, restoring the natural cycle.

El impacto del proyecto se definirá, no solo en los beneficios que este tendrá en las personas que viven en Gowanus, sino también en la cantidad de agua limpiada, retenida y redirigida. Esto comprueba la mitigación de los problemas principales. Algunos indicadores biológicos nos permitiran a nosotros, a los evaluadores y a los habitantes de Gowanus observar que el ecosistema se está restaurando. Lo cual se ve reflejado en el regreso de especies endémicas como lo son: ostras, sábalo, esturión, truchas, nutrias, castores y visones. Los microorganismos de limpieza de igual manera actúan como bioindicadores, cuanto más sana sea el agua más protozoos contendrá. Cuanto más limpia sea el agua, más especies, flora y fauna puede desarrollarse, por lo tanto, se restaura más vida.

The unbalanced way in which humanity lives, prioritizing its own benefits, has tipped the scales of the existence and development of plant and animal species. Our entire lives we’ve built with anthropocentrism as a design principle, placing the natural ecosystem at the service of society, which as a consequence has resulted in its depletion. The idea of sustainable development has often and wrongly appeared as a solution to this problem, proposing an equilibrium in the development of social and environmental dimensions. The design of the project critiques the way we live, resulting in an ecocentric proposal, strengthening the relationship between society and the natural ecosystem.

We have the vision to start redirecting the destructive tendencies of modern civilization, seeing nature as a living, primordial entity, thus arriving at holistic practices. Cities cease to be designed around the machine and begin to be designed with nature at the center, which has always given us the answers to how to live.

El dilema entre el bienestar de la especie humana y la forma en que vive la sociedad ha desequilibrado la existencia y el desarrollo de las especies vegetales y animales. Toda nuestra vida hemos construido con el antropocentrismo como principio de diseño poniendo al ecosistema natural al servicio de la sociedad, lo que como consecuencia ha resultado en su agotamiento. La idea del desarrollo sostenible ha aparecido de manera errónea como una solución a esta problemática proponiendo un equilibrio en el desarrollo de las dimensiones sociales y ambientales. El diseño del proyecto critica la forma en que vivimos resultando en una propuesta ecocentrista, fortaleciendo la relación entre la sociedad y el ecosistema natural.

Tenemos la visión de comenzar a redirigir las tendencias destructivas de la civilización moderna, viendo a la naturaleza como el ente vivo, primordial así llegando a prácticas holísticas. Las ciudades dejan de diseñarse en torno a la máquina y comienzan a diseñarse con la naturaleza, que siempre nos ha dado las respuestas de cómo vivir, al centro.

In order for us to understand how our current relationship with water came to be, we must know what was there before humans. ‘Mannahatta’ was a place filled with a diversity of species, wealth in nature, and according to researchers, home to over 55 ecosystems. This is what we now know as New York City, home to 8.85 million people.

Origin | Origen We are going back to our roots by taking a traditional approach reinterpretating the structure developed by Mexicas in the form of Chinampas. They were traditionally built in areas where water is the main natural resource and rain is not abundant enough to provide food security. This method of agriculture built with local materials and techniques acted as a biofilter that cleaned the water bodies.

Regresamos a nuestras raíces al tomar la técnica tradicional de las Chinampas desarrollada por los Mexicas para reinterpretar su estructura. Eran tradicionalmente construidas en áreas donde el agua no era suficientemente abudante para proveer seguridad alimentaria. Este método de agricultura, construido con materiales y técnicas locales, actuaba como un biofiltro que limpiaba los cuerpos de agua.

Currently 20,000 chinampas are found in Mexico City, covering an area of 30,348 acres and producing around 19 tons of food anually.

We adapt this structure to become an ecosystem that cleans, adapts and revitalizes the water.

Actualmente 20,000 chinampas estan en funcionamiento en la Ciudad de México, cubriendo un área total de 30,348 hectáreas y produciendo alrededor de 19 toneladas de alimentos anualmente.

Adaptamos esta estructura para que funcione como un ecosistema que limpia, adapta y revitaliza el agua.

Next Generation Water Action Challenge | Reto Next Generation Water Action

The Next Generation Water Action Challenge is an international initiative developed by DTU Skylab where students and associations are involved in making conscious decisions for the proposed challenges in international scenarios.

This year the Water Action theme was continued, with a total of 24 participating teams from different countries including Mexico, India, Korea, Kenya and Denmark. The challenge partners formulated 5 challenges in which they guided the participants on a journey to create sustainable change.

The challenge we were given was to find an answer to the current crisis in many countries due to flooding risks and lack of water. This is how On Water came to be, a holistic system of ecocentric design that recognises and gives true value to water.

El Next Generation Water Action Challenge es una iniciativa internacional desarrollada por DTU Skylab donde participan estudiantes y asociaciones que se encargan de tomar decisiones conscientes para los retos propuestos en escenarios internacionales.

Este año es la continuación del tema Water Action, con un total de 24 equipos de diferentes países entre los cuales participaban México, India, Corea, Kenia y Dinamarca. Los socios del desafío formularon 5 retos en los cuales fueron guiando a los participantes en un viaje para crear cambios sostenibles.

El reto que nos fue propuesto fue encontrar una respuesta a la crisis que se vive en la actualidad en muchos países a causa de las inundaciones y la ausencia del agua. Es así como nace On Water un sistema holístico de diseño ecocéntrico que reconoce y le otorga su verdadero valor al agua.

Our project is located in the Eastern part of the United States of America, in what is known as the New York City Metropolitan Area. Our study polygon can be found in the Borough of Brooklyn, more specifically, in the Neighborhoods surrounding the Gowanus Canal.

Nuestro proyecto está ubicado en la parte este de Estados Unidos, en lo que se conoce como el Área Metropolitana de Nueva York. El polígono de estudio se encuentra en el barrio de Brooklyn, específicamente, en el vecindario que rodea el Canal de Gowanus.

Importance vs. Urgency | Importancia vs. Urgencia

We identified the problems and situations happening in Gowanus. By classifing them in Social, Ecological and Economical, we were able to compare them using two key factors, importance and urgency. Defining importance as value, magnitude or influence this issue has or will have in the future. And urgency, understanding that the matter requires immediate action. The most urgent and important situation is flooding, followed by the cleaning of the canal.

For this to create a real change we must change the value of water.

Identificamos los diferentes problemas que tiene esta comunidad de Gowanus, y los clasificamos en las categorías de Social, ecológico y económico. Entonces podemos compararlas en términos de importancia y urgencia. El problema más importante y urgente es la inundación, seguido de cerca por la limpieza del canal. Pero más que nada entendimos que para poder generar un cambio significativo y real, debemos transformar el valor del agua y cómo la gente la percibe.

Infraestructure Map | Mapa de Infraestructura The canal is surrounded by industrial lots, mainly manufacturing companies, as well as a wide range of concrete plants, warehouses, parking lots and empty lots.

For many years, it served as dumping grounds for industrial waste, resulting in it being one of the nation’s most contaminated water bodies. It is now categorized as not fit for human consumption and as a Superfund site, meaning it’s polluted with hazardous contaminants and requires a long term response focused on cleaning.

The streets surrounding the canal have a high amount of housing and the presence of commerce in the form of store fronts. It’s a high rent zone, as is most of the greater New York area.

Actualmente el canal está rodeado de lotes industriales, principalmente de empresas manufactureras, así como de una amplia gama de plantas de hormigón, almacenes, aparcamientos y solares vacíos. Durante muchos años, este canal sirvió de vertedero para los residuos industriales, lo que hizo que fuera uno de los cuerpos de agua más contaminadas del país. El canal fue declarado como un “Superfund site” lo que le cataloga como un sitio contaminado con sustancias peligrosas y requiere una respuesta a largo plazo centrada en la limpieza.

Las calles que rodean el canal tienen una gran cantidad de viviendas, con variación en la densidad y la presencia de comercio en forma de frentes de tiendas. Es una zona de alquileres elevados, como la mayor parte del área metropolitana de Nueva York. La limpieza del canal y una rezonificación de la zona se encuentran en marcha.

Water Map | Mapa Agua According to the flooding zones projected for the end of the 2020’s, 2050’s and the worst case scenario of a Hurricane, referencing the consequences from Hurricane Ida in 2021. The entire neighborhood will be underwater, sooner rather than later.

If we return to the original ‘Mannahatta’ shoreline, we can clearly see that a large part of what is being flooded did not exist in the first place, and as we know water has memory. It wants to come back to where it once was.

El área sufre de inundaciones a causa de las lluvias, huracanes y la elevación del mar, aquí podemos ver las zonas de inundación proyectadas para finales de los años 2020, 2050 y el peor escenario de un huracán, haciendo referencia a las consecuencias del huracán Ida en 2021. Como se puede observar, todo el barrio estará bajo el agua.

Si regresamos a la línea costera original de ‘Mannahatta’, podemos observar que gran parte de lo que se estará inundando no existía originalmente. Sabemos que el agua tiene memoria, quiere regresar a donde alguna vez estaba.

Gowanus is a neighborhood with mainly manufacturing land use, with a polluted and uncleaned canal and an undergoing rezoning plan that promotes real estate development and ignores its current issues.

Our project gives the people of Gowanus a new chance at a better space, a happier community and a fuller life. Inspired by historic environments, this systemic regeneration of an ecosystem will allow us to fulfill our objectives with the help of chinampas, a community-building green corridor and a newly formed water cycle, understanding the true value of water. This is the star of being On Water.

Nuestro proyecto le da a la gente de Gowanus una nueva oportunidad para crear mejores entornos, disfrutar de una comunidad más contenta, y tener una vida más plena.

Nos inspiramos en entornos históricos, regeneramos un ecosistema para cumplir con nuestros objetivos con la ayuda de chinampas, un corredor verde que permite la generación de comunidad y un nuevo ciclo del agua, para entender el verdadero valor del agua. Este es el inicio de On Water.
