Sunday, noon to 9pm When it comes to catering, what’s in a name? Good food is good food after all so it shouldn’t really matter if one or two places have a familiar and similar ring to them. OK, try telling that to Burger King if Burger Ken opened up nearby and Harry Ramsden might not be too pleased if Barry Ramsden came up with a similar name for his fish and chip outlet. But when restaurateur Vito Bruno decided to expand from his tiny Gusto Italia base in Bamber Bridge to bigger premises nearer (but not too close) to the city

(and student) centre of Preston he found himself incurring the wrath of the bully boys behind the national Gusto chain. The result meant an unwelcome delay in opening the 100-or-so seater, two floor, operation in the former Ribble Cycles (and next door neighbours) re-named Il Gusto D’Italia - not to mention re-branding his original operation at the same time despite trading successfully for not much short of a decade. All’s well that ends well though and the new Il Gusto (etc etc) is already establishing itself both as
a daytime and evening venue whether you want to eat in or try a takeaway – or even hold a party. Lunchtime meal deals on pizzas, pastas and paninis start at just £3.95, early bird two courses start from £9.95 (until 6pm) and the evening a la carte menu is pitched at pockets looking for a manageable meal out rather than a second mortgage bill at the end of the night. Having left his native Sicily at 19 and travelled extensively, Vito eventually landed in Preston and cut his Lancastrian catering
teeth at Paul Heathcote’s much missed The Olive Press as general manager until making the break in 2010 and opening Gusto Italia mainly as a take away. Vito and his business partner Antonio Costanza decided to open up the Watery Lane premises after getting an increasing number of requests for takeaway deliveries to Preston and Penwortham that they couldn’t fulfil. Facing into the Watery Lane and Strand Road junction it’s a busy spot which means parking won’t always be easy - but once inside the decor is modern and
upmarket in complete contrast to the neighbouring pubs. The Bamber Bridge original has always prided itself on combining Sicilian specialities and stone baked pizzas together with more familiar Italian favourites. The Ashton outlet is out to do the same so rather than head straight to my usual choice of chicken livers I opted to start with toscanini from the specials list. Stuffed with chicken, chorizo and mixed vegetables and accompanied by what was basically a sweet chilli sauce the pair did rather resemble Chinese spring rolls but were an interesting diversion none the less. Our other starter was stuffed mushrooms. For once not slathered with a sauce these were half a dozen button mushrooms topped with crisp garlic parmesan crumbs. A pleasant change. Having been almost swayed to my usual calzone or even a marinara pizza (6” – surely a starter? 10”’’ or 14” – surely to share?), I slipped into old ways. Having spotted tagliatelle
chicken livers how could I resist them as a main course. Pan fried with mushrooms, peppers, sage and chilli in a red wine sauce they were served piping hot and substantial but could have done with a spicier kick. Adopting the same philosophy of “we don’t cook these at home” our other main course was lamp chops with mash, vegetables and marsala sauce. I know - not very Sicilian but still very good and prepared as requested (“not pink, sauce served separately please”). As usual I didn’t make it through to dessert which was a shame as the pizza topped with chocolate sauce and icing sugar sounded suitably lethal as did the cannoli filled with ricotta cheese. Instead though one portion of tiramisu eventually provided completion. Very creamy, very chocolatey and very moreish (apparently). A glass of pino grigio blush (from an efficiently small wine list) and a pint of Morena completed a pleasant midweek night out. Robin and Sue Duke.

Early in 1981, four complete strangers sat in the drawing room of a house in Fulham and were told “you are now Bucks Fizz.” In the eight weeks between that first meeting and appearing on A Song for Europe on March 11, the quartet were hurled into a melee of rehearsing, recording, choreography, styling, interviews and photography. All that hard work and effort was to pay dividends - they went on to win the Song for Europe and Eurovision Song Contest and became household names around the world.
More than 20 singles were released over the next few years including three number ones - My Camera Never Lies, Land Of Make Believe and of course, Making Your Mind Up. They sold in excess of 15 million copies, spending 219 weeks in the UK charts alone. Making Your Mind Up went to number one in nine countries. This year the band is celebrating 35 years since winning the Eurovision and they want all their fans to come along and celebrate the anniversary with them……and yes, they still rip the skirts off! For Charles Dickens the French Revolution was “the best of times, it was the worst of times.” He also considered A Tale of Two Cities the best novel he had ever written. It’s a Revolution
The Dukes in Lancaster is staging the premiere of a heartwarming play about an ordinary couple who win a second chance at life, thanks to cryonic freezing. The Ockerbys On Ice, which runs until October 22 is a love story to melt the coldest of hearts. Written by Dukes associate artist and Coronation Street scriptwriter, Debbie Oates, a version of the play was first aired on Radio 4. The daughter of a
scientist, Debbie explores the universal themes of mortality, love, life and loss through the lives of Dennis and Viv Ockerby, a couple more likely to be found at home in front of the tv than at the cutting edge of science and medical ethics. Originally from Scotland, Paul Montgomery moved to Blackpool 24 years ago and was living with his partner, David Fletcher, on New South Promenade. He worked at B&Q at Whitehills Business Park for 10 years.

Hospitals Fund – the charity for Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – is spent on buying a leg ulcer chair, which will help staff treat patients whose legs are swollen in a more dignifying way. Clinical Matron for Clifton Hospital, Courtney Bickerdike, said: “This chair will greatly enhance the experience we can offer to our patients who are suffering with swollen legs. “Instead of our nurses having to handle a patient, which can be upsetting for someone with a leg ulcer or swelling condition, the chair elevates the legs allowing us to do a thorough check which is less invasive. “We are enormously grateful to David, Tracy and all the people who have donated in Paul’s memory. They have helped to make a big difference to our patients on the Dermatology Unit.”
Paul suffered with psoriasis for which he was receiving treatment on the Dermatology Unit at Clifton Hospital, but also had lupus – an incurable illness of the immune system – which affected his organs and possibly contributed to his death in May when he was just 47. Due to his origins, Paul’s funeral was held in Scotland. But friends in Blackpool decided to hold their own memorial event which would also raise money to buy
