Sonya Maher, L.O. invites you to come into

WILLIMANTIC — A popular literary printing press operation in Willimantic will forever be memorialized, as a city street will be renamed in its honor. Terry Avenue will be renamed to Curbstone Way in honor of the Curbstone Press following the Windham Town Council’s 8-2 vote late last month. The council met to deliberate the street name change. Councilors Dawn Niles, Dagmar Noll, Thomas DeVivo, Clinton Adams, Randall Prose, Rose Reyes, Dennis O’Brien and Nectalis Martinez approved the
motion. Councilors Ernest Eldridge and Tony Fantoli opposed the motion. They did not wish to remove the Terry name from the street because it is named after a noted veteran. Terry Avenue, which intersects Jackson Street, is a short road with only one mailing address. However, it was the home of Curbstone Press, an internationally known poetry press operation that operated from 1975 to 2005. Willimantic resident Kathy Dubay brought the issue forward to the town manager and town council in recognition of her former neighbor, Judy Doyle, and Curbstone

Press. It was owned and operated by Alexander “Sandy” Taylor and Doyle, who lived above the press operation. Terry Avenue is also home
to the Julia De Burgos Poetry Park, which Taylor and Doyle were instrumental in founding. Follow Claire Galvin on Twitter - @CGalvinTC.

WILLIMANTIC — Do you ever wonder why you even wake up some mornings? Recently, I decided it must’ve been so I could taste mom’s tuna and macaroni salad at the Trolley Pub on Main in Willimantic. Seriously. Owner Chuck Lester wasn’t giving out any recipes the day I visited, but he was making some darn good food that I ate as I dined in. You can take it to go, too.

TOWN CONTROLLER - WINDHAM FINANCE DEPARTMENT. Willimantic, CT The Town of Windham seeks qualified applicants for the position of Town Controller. The Town Controller performs highly responsible professional and administrative work involving the planning, organizing, and directing activities of the Finance Department, which include accounting and internal control; coordination of the Town budget preparation; the Towns bidding process and procurement policies; reimbursement and investment of Town funds; debt management; ensuring compliance with Finance policy and/or protocol of other departments; and other fiscal activities. The duties and responsibilities range from making difficult technical accounting decisions to performing accounting functions such as account reconciliation, cash management, accounting for various Town funds, monthly financial reports, year-end reports, bank reconciliation, financial analysis, and internal audits. The work involves the regular exercise of independent judgment and initiative based on general knowledge of the Towns administrative policies and procedures, and considerable knowledge, skill, and ability in every phase of municipal accounting and control functions. Please see the complete job description on the Towns website (www.windhamct.com) for additional details/information. Must possess a Masters Degree from a recognized college or university in Business, Accounting, Public Administration, or a related field; plus five (5) years experience in Municipal Government and two (2) years of supervisory experience; or in lieu thereof, an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Must have a strong working knowledge of the day-to-day operation of a municipality. This is a full-time exempt position; Salary Grade 11; Salary Range $100,394 - $121,476. Applications may be obtained from the Town of Windham, Town Managers Office, 979 Main Street, Willimantic, CT 06226; or on our website at www.windhamct.com and must be submitted with a cover letter, resume, and three (3) professional references no later than Friday, November 13, 2020. EOE/AA/M/F/D/V
As long as you remember to bring cash (the only form of currency accepted), you are good to go. In all honesty, I advise this: don’t snub pub grub. Bringing almost 30 years of food to the Trolley table, Chuck has got things down to a science. Sandwiches are all grilled/ toasted. The chicken salad is on a roll and made with lettuce and tomato. With real chicken and real onions, it’s real good. Each order is served with chips and pickles. The honey ham and cheese on rye is a sweet take on a regular. Lots of gooey cheese melts over the sides of the bread, which holds a nice
stack of meat, too. The pastrami with Swiss must be the eighth wonder of the world since the cheese is also melted over the sides of the bread, but is harder and now crunchy so you can snap it off with your hands. I thought only Shady Glen knew how to do that — not so. Grilled cheese and tuna is the best of both worlds. Loaded with cheesy and fishy goodness, a little salty, this counts for real comfort food. The menu changes with the seasons, so take a look at the Facebook page for the menu of the day. Soon, soups will be added to the menu. Latenight food includes hot dogs, popcorn and nachos. Offering beers and brews in a rustic and historical set-

Thanks to a federal grant, a Willimantic organization was able to distribute more than 33,000 pounds of food to families in need recently. And the scope of the situation was clear, as a traffic jam surrounded the Access Community Action Agency headquarters in Willimantic for the food distribution. Through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farmers To Families Food Box Program, Access provided fresh food to Windham and Tolland county residents. Access Director of Community Nutrition Programs Kaitlin Binnington said 1,152 boxes of food were to be given away. Binnington said all Windham and Tolland county residents were able to access the food box, although she wouldn’t turn anybody away.
Winners drawn each week.

STORRS UC pauses program for needy students Financial shortfalls have led the University of Connecticut to temporarily pause the Connecticut Commitment Program, a decision that was announced at a recent trustees meeting. The program, which was launched last fall, provides tuition assistance to low-income undergraduate students from Connecticut. The program was designed to cover four years of tuition for full-time, entering freshmen students and two years of tuition for full-time, undergraduate transfer students. UConn officials plan to reassess the program in the future. — Michelle Warren/the Chronicle

Culinary, travel expert Joanne Weir has a zest RUTH HARTUNIANALUMBAUGH SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
I love cookbooks. To me, they read like novels, and sometimes like history books. They are like good times flash frozen for pos-
terity in pictures and recipes. While vacationing in Lake Placid, I picked up a cookbook by author Joanne Weir and read it, devouring every word, from cover to cover like someone who hadn’t eaten in a week.
It was a simple tomato and mayonnaise sandwich recipe that she touted in her book, “Kitchen Gypsy,” that got me hooked into contacting Joanne.

Eager to pick up some tricks from this culinary expert, I asked if she had any tips on making mayo. “Make sure ingredients are all at room temperature,” she said. “Use half extra virgin and half pure ‘other’ oil, mustard and whisk things together slowly.” It seems Joanne never stops learning and gathering ideas from her travels. We talked of Marrakesh in Morocco, the Isle of Syros in Greece, week-long tours in gorgeous places that include immersion in the culture and people, studying languages and plans for the future. I also wanted to know what new finds her travels have led her to in the kitchen. “My current favorite discovery is Fiori di Sicilia, which is an extract made from the flowers of Sicily,” she said. “With an essence of citrus and vanilla, I am enjoying putting it on cookies and clafouti.” I’ve got to get some of that. Even though it seems as if Joanne has done it all, she still has dreams of doing more work on TV and doing more travel when the risks of travel “simmer down” a bit. For now, look for her on Instagram, grab a copy of one of her cookbooks, check out her TV series or even join her on an international excursion.
