ISSUE 7 / FALL • WINTER 2018-19

Photo: Pete Mazzaccaro In this edition of Welcome, we take a look at learning in the Northwest and getting a good breakfast. First, we look at two places where locals can improve their crafting skills: Chestnut Hill’s A&R Workshop and the Philadelphia Handcraft Workshop in Mt. Airy. Both businesses offer classes and other events that can get you back into crafting or help you perfect your skills. Next, we breakdown some of the most interesting classes offered by the Mt. Airy Learning Tree. The decades-old institution has long offered classes of nearly every variety – all taught by community experts. In addition to learning Spanish or taking a

writing workshop, MALT also offers instruction in sword fighting for stage, Chinese painting Zen meditation and more. Finally, we offer a rundown of some of the best breakfast and brunch places in Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy. There’s never been a better time for getting a good on Germantown Avenue. And as usual, you can find information about the Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy neighborhoods and a packed calendar of events that will let you know the best of what the region has to offer through the fall and winter. Thanks for reading.

WELCOME / NEIGHBORHOODS

Welcome to Chestnut Hill Chestnut Hill, located in the northwestern corner of Philadelphia, is one of the city’s most beautiful, affluent and historic neighborhoods. Anchored by Germantown Avenue and Bethlehem Pike, Chestnut Hill is surrounded by Fairmont Park and adjacent to the neighborhoods of Mt. Airy in Philadelphia and Wyndmoor, Erdenheim and Lafayette Hill in Montgomery County. Chestnut Hill is known for its walkable, village feel and for the great shopping and dining options along its Belgian-block-lined artery, Germantown Avenue. The neighborhood was designated one of the top seven urban enclaves in the USA by Forbes.com and selected as a 2010 Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Chestnut Hill is the home to Chestnut Hill College, Chestnut Hill Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania’s Morris Arboretum and the Woodmere Art Museum as well as the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Its housing stock ranges from modest row houses to architectural landmarks by Louis Kahn and Robert Venturi. Shopping Chestnut Hill is home to more than 100 unique shops and businesses, most of them in convenient storefronts clustered on Germantown Avenue and Bethlehem Pike. Antiques, gifts and clothes, banks and spas, two yarn stores, two cigar stores, an old fashioned candy store, a neighborhood coop grocery, a farmers’ market, a country market and more than a few bakeries and cheese shops. To the south is Fairmount Park, the nation’s largest city park with scenic trails for walking, biking and horseback riding and fishing along the Wissahickon Creek (including one of the area’s only covered bridges). In the lower, heart o Chestnut Hill, just to the west of Germantown Avenue is Pastorius Park, an urban gem designed by Frederick W. G. Peck in 1935. The park hosts the Chestnut HIll Community Association’s summer concert series, a series that has been running now for almost 70 years. There is ice skating at the Wissahickon Skating Club and tennis, golf and cricket at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, and indoor activities at the Water Tower Recreation Center. Civic Resources: Chestnut Hill Community Association - CHCA Chestnut Hill has remained a vital community since its annexation with the City more than 100 years ago, by controlling it destiny through a strong community. Chestnut Hill Business Association The Chestnut Hill Business Association is a membership organization for the 125 retailers and restaurants located in Chestnut Hill, the beautiful Northwest Philadelphia neighborhood designated by Forbes.com as one of the top seven urban enclaves in the country. It also has more than 200 professional and sustaining members. Chestnuthillpa.com Welcome to Mount Airy Mount Airy is just southeast of Chestnut Hill and is bordered by Fairmount Park, to the west, Germantown on the south and extending up to Stenton Avenue on the north which leads to West Oak Lane. History Originally named Cresheim Village, part of the German Township, the area was later named after the sprawling summer estate of Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, William Allen: Mount Airy. Housing Much of modern Mount Airy was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, spreading out from Germantown Avenue and two railroad lines. Large threestory, gray-stone Victorian, colonial revival, and Norman and Cotswold-style houses and mansions, with stained glass windows and slate roofs, are situated on many of the

area's tree-lined streets. With a population of about 27,000, Mount Airy is nationally famous as one of America’s most diverse and successful city neighborhoods. Starting with the 1950’s and 60’s when neighbors banded together to stop block-busting and urban flight, Mt. Airy has proudly and continuously fostered harmony among different groups of differing, races, religions and sexual orientations. It was cited by Oprah’s O Magazine and US News and World Report for its successful diversity and by CNNMoney in 2013 as one of America’s top 10 best big-city neighborhoods. Dining As you would expect in Mt. Airy, the dining options tend to be varied, informal and tempting. There are a couple coffee houses and everything from a diner and ice cream parlor in a real trolley car to Indian, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, soul food, pastries, and bistro pub fare as well as wide selections of craft beer; all in several short blocks on or near Germantown Avenue. Shopping Mount Airy is home to not one but two independent bookstores, as well as a variety of vintage clothing stores, boutiques and other shops as well as the original Weavers Way coop food store. In the center of Mount Airy is the Art Deco Sedgwick Theatre, which now serves as the home to the Quintessence Theatre Group.

WELCOME / CRAFTS & WORKSHOPS

It’s never too late to learn something new: Craft classes for all ages by Will McQuillan

Mount Airy and Chestnut Hill have long been a hub of creativity in Philadelphia. Handcraft Workshop, a Mount Airy-based sewing studio, was founded by Heather Hutchison Harris in 2013. “Sewing has been a way to express my creativity, and it helps me focus. I’ve always been a helper, so teaching has been a way for me to introduce people to the joy of making things by hand,” said Harris. The studio offers classes for sewing enthusiasts of all abilities and ages. Novices may choose to start with a pillowcase, while more advanced students create shirts, jeans, and coats.

12

WELCOME | FALL • WINTER 2018-19

“I think a lot of people have wanted to sew for a long time but were too afraid to do it on their own,” said Harris, who sees her classes as confidence-builders for aspiring creators. “I focused on Mount Airy because of how artistically diverse the neighborhood is. There are a lot of artists and craftspeople in the area, and it just felt like the right fit.” Kim McPoyle owns AR Workshop’s Chestnut Hill franchise, where she instructs workshoppers on how to customize wood and canvas prototypes to their own specifications. “I’ve always been a fan of DIY, and I’ve dabbled in my own craft making, (Continued on page 14)

woodworking, and a lot of home renovation. I’m a fan of doing, as opposed to sitting behind a desk,” said McPoyle. Popular projects include trays, lazy Susans, canvas wall hangings, and tote bags. AR Workshop also offers themed prototypes and encourages workshoppers to bring their own food and drink in order to create a more comfortable atmosphere. “We have a whole youth line, so we’re doing summer camps for 8 to 14-yearolds and kids birthday parties. For the most part the adult workshops are mostly in their 30s and 40s. I think it caters to people with young children and families,” said McPoyle, who sees the neighborhood as a good fit with her business.

WELCOME / BEST BREAKFAST BETS

Hill is a great spot for breakfast and brunch all year

The Trolley Car Diner’s trolley car.

by Sarah Alessandrini

Indulging in a good breakfast has been a rapidly growing trend in the food industry in recent years. Luckily for Hillers, Chestnut Hill offers a variety of options for breakfast, including sit-down or quick service and innovative or traditional fare. Breakfast Boutique 8630 Germantown Ave. 215-621-7796 One of three locations, the Breakfast Boutique came to Chestnut Hill in May of this year. Breakfast Boutique, a Philadelphia favorite, was first opened by owners Robert and Desiree Pollard back in 2014. Every item is made from scratch and the menu includes a variety of classic dishes, such as omelets, as well as unique options like red velvet chicken and waffles. Highlights of this venue 24

include great coffee and tea selections, and desserts made homemade by a local baker. Breakfast Boutique is located at 8630 Germantown Avenue— look for the frying pan sign. Louie’s Little Hut 8419 Germantown Ave 267-766-5044 If you’ve walked down Germantown Avenue, passed El Quetzal and the Philadelphia Print Shop, then you’ve passed the sign pointing to Louie’s Little Hut. Follow this path, and you won’t regret it. This island themed eatery was inspired by the Hawaiian travels of owners Jim and Karen Cerenzia and is perfect for quick and friendly service. Two popular favorites off the breakfast menu are the Cape May or the Pipeline, but patrons can build their own breakfast sandwich as well. Louie’s Little Hut (Continued on page 26)

opened last October, and just began hosting private parties. Louie’s is open all-year round and offers outdoor seating, ideal in nice weather. The inside of the Little Hut is adorned with pictures of the Cerenzias’s hikes through Hawaii, Oregon and Pennsylvania’s own Appalachian Trail, and also pictures of the restaurant's namesake Louie, the couple’s German Shorthaired Shepherd. A chalkboard lists the specials, which changes weekly, and includes a breakfast special. Another chalkboard reads comments about the restaurant from patrons on social media— “Delicious Food,” “Unique and Creative Sandwiches,” “A Must Try in Chestnut Hill.” Top of the Hill Café 184 E Evergreen Ave. 215-248-6009 Another great venue for outdoor seating is the Top of the Hill Cafe, located on Evergreen Avenue, just behind Wells Fargo Bank. Look for the large tractor and the Top of the Hill Farmer’s market, and you’ll find outdoor seating as well as the cafe offering affordable, quick breakfast options. Customers can choose classics such as omelets, bagels or breakfast sandwiches, or head over to Sip Bar for a wide selection of seasonal fruit juices and smoothies made with a choice of water or coconut milk. Top of the Hill Cafe also brews coffee from Chestnut Hill Coffee Company. Cake 8501 Germantown Ave. 215-247-6887 If you’re looking for a unique atmosphere to enjoy breakfast, Cake is the place to go. This venue is an upscale dining experience inside a converted Victorian greenhouse originally built for Robertson’s florist. Located on the corner

of Germantown and Highland Ave, this bakery and bistro serves breakfast Tuesday through Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., and Sunday brunch is offered from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Some favorites from the breakfast menu include Brioche French Toast and the Morning Burrito. Trolley Car Diner 7619 Germantown Ave. 215-753-1500 Similarly, the Trolley Car Diner offers traditional breakfast fare inside a unique setting -- a fifties-themed trolley car. This diner, located on Germantown Avenue in East Mt. Airy, serves breakfast all day every day of the week. James Astor, the Trolley Car’s general manager, said that classic breakfast dishes such as pancakes and waffles are among the most popular orders. However, the Trolley Car is starting a new menu. “We’ve had the old menu for about a decade,” said Astor. “It was time to update.” This new menu will include classic dishes as well as unique, new recipes such as cornbread waffles. Astor said that the Trolley Car Diner prides itself on its long-standing staff, and that regulars will often request specific staff members. The Trolley Car has regulars who may frequent the diner as often as every day, every other day or weekly, said Astor. Cake and Trolley Car are great for unique dining experiences, but for an even more traditional diner atmosphere, Fairlane Grill is the way to go. Fairlane is a small venue located right on Bethlehem Pike, which offers comforting, homestyle breakfast classic in a cozy, classic American diner setting. Whether you’re looking for classic American diner fare or looking to try something new, Chestnut Hill has you covered for enjoying the most important meal of the day.
