Chesterville Historical Society punches up new addition Lois Ann Baker Record Staff A piece of The Record history, a 6300 Series Addressograph Graphtype, now holds a place at the Chesterville Historical Society. The machine, which stamps out characters onto metal plates, was originally owned by Graham’s Mailing Service. The Record purchased the machine from Keith Graham to make mailing labels and owner Robin Morris said they used the machine until the early 1980s when the manufacturer stopped making the plates, making further use of the machine obsolete. Just wanting the bulky almost 400 pound piece of equipment out of the building, Morris said he gave it to Patrick Coyne. Patrick’s sister-in-law,
Frances Coyne said when they moved into Patrick’s house after he died, they found the old machine in a hen house. Rather than throw it out, they gave it to the historical society. “We have ties to the historical society so we gave it to them,” said Coyne. “We received it covered in dust, feathers, poop, spider webs etc, and almost scrapped it, thinking it was too old and rusted to be worth any consideration as an artifact,” said Alec Ball, Vice-President of the Chesterville and District Historical Society in an email. “We decided to keep it, attempt a clean and fix, and that decision has now proved to be very well taken.” Ball and Verne McMillan, fellow historian and member of the Society, took it upon themselves to fix the old, rust-

ed machine. After researching the history of the machine online, McMillan completely disassembled the Addressograph, cleaned the pieces, removed rust, replaced missing or broken pieces and put it all back together. After a few adjustments, they had it working. Although unable to determine the exact date this particular machine was manufactured, it appears that this model was probably produced sometime in the 1930s. The same model was used to make World War II dog tags for soldiers. In its day, the Addressograph, was able to press 500 to 1,000 plates a day with a competent operator.
Local historian Verne McMillan operates the Addressograph- Graphotype donated to the Historical Society by Mike and Frances Coyne of Chesterville. The machine, once owned by The Record, stamps out characters on brass plates that are then put through a printing press to create labels. Baker photo
