The Art Club The art program should be designed so that each and every individual, regardless of their unique characteristics or capabilities, may have equal opportunities for self expres sion and complete development. Objectives: From the guiding principles spring the many specific objectives which are the foundation stones for the education programs across the state. Art education, as a fundamental part of Kentucky’s school program, has five such objectives. They are as follows: To provide avenues for the individual to express and communicate feelings, ideas and concept through the visual arts. To provide experiences which will foster the development of the maximum creativity of each individual. To help students recognize and value man and his creativity through all times. To develop aesthetic appreciation by continually encouraging the critical and analytical observation of art and nature. To encourage individuals to be self direc tive, thereby forming a basis for self discip line.

Football With a strong corps of lettermen and a num ber of promising newcomers, the Jackets showed from the very start that the 1959 season was going to be a rough one for every opponent Opening the season with one of the outstanding teams of Southeastern Kentucky, the Yellow Jackets played the Danvifle Admirals off their feet but had to settle for a 6-6 tie when the P.A.T. was missed. Throughout the game the team hit hard and played heads-up footba II Pineville was next and came out with a single wing offense that had Middlesboro 7 to 6 at the end of the half. The Yellow Jackets were not to be denied. Passes started clicking and the whole team caught fire to win by a 25 to 7 score, gaining 400 yards during the evening. The Jackets returned to Bradner Stadium to smash Lynn Camp by a score of 40 to 0.

Coach Hurst had a welcomed opportunity to give his reserves a chance to get some much needed experience during most of the game. And after two wins and a tie the cry was, “Bring on Cbrbin.” On the twenty-fifth day of September the team and hundreds of fans journeyed to Corbin where they saw a couple of bad First row: Bert Lovett, Lyle Mace, Richard Hover, Wilburn Conner, Bill Dean. breaks bring defeat to a team that deserved to win. The Jackets led the Hounds throughout the game only to see a 13 to 12 lead change to a 26 to 13 loss in the last six mmutes of the game. hundred per cent best no one can deny.” On the rebound from Corbin, the Jackets stung a strong Knox Central team 20 to 7 to prove they were still in the fight for S.E.K.C. honors. On October 19 the team again switched to high gear to roll over Williamsburg 38 to 6 in a game that again gave the regulars a chance to rest up for the second half of the season. Middlesboro again showed power on the ground and in the air for a total of 360 yards. With Middlesboro holding a 4-1 won-loss record in the S.E.K. Conference and two more conference games to play, they opened against the Bell High Bobcats before a sellout crowd on October 16. For the first half the team was down and it looked like Bell High was going to be hard to handle. When the Bobcats scored in the second quarter they lit the fire that cooked them 34 to 13.
The Jackets went out of the conference for their next game to hold the LaFollette Owls to only30 yards on the ground. The Jackets showed to all that their defense was not to be taken lightly. Leading at the half 14 to 7, the team held the Owls throughout the rest of the game and went on with a. strong passing attack to finish the game 28 to 7. The big game came on the thirtieth of October when the Jackets met the Harlan Green Dragons with the S.E.K.C title at stake. The extra point after the touchdown was the difference. Both teams played their best, but a bunch of never-say-die Jackets fought it out man to man to bring a conference title to Middlesboro High by a score of 13 to 12. The final conference standing for the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets was six wins and one loss. The Jackets closed the season against an outstanding Hazard team that came to town with their hopes high of winning a Region 4 AA championship. The Jackets, understandably down after a long, tough season, climaxed by the game with Harlan, held the score to 7-7 during the first half but ran out of steam to go down to its second defeat by a score of 49 to 19. A successful season with seven wins, two losses, and one tie has ended and we can only say “well done.” Though tired and outmanned at times, the Jackets were never outplayed and added another page to the Football History of M.H.S. To the Senior boys going on to their future work, such as co-captains Houston Ball and Lyle Mace; backs: Bill Dean, Pat Greer, and Bill Burch; linemen: John Loy, John Mote, Willard Cosby, Jimmy Barnes, and Mac Pratt, we can only say thank you for some thrilling moments and good in all that you do.
First row: Eddie Parkey, Fred Ditty, Bobby Rogan, Conley Bingham, Danny Schultz, Jimmy Asher, Charles Carter, Second row: Assistant Coach Bobby Jenkins, Bill Donham,
Richard Harrell, Tommy Sharp, Clarence Evans, Bobby Green, Walter Johnson, Wendell Jones, and Coach Darrell Storm.
Basketball
The Yellow Jackets closed out the year of 1959 participating in the Bell County Invi tational Tournament at Bell High. The team showed their stuff in the first two games b defeating Williamsburg and Lynn Camp but found Bell High too strong in the finals in a low scoring game with the Bell High Bobcats
The 1959-60 Yellow Jackets opened the basketball season with a new coach, Darrell Storm. The team was composed of only five players returning from the ‘58-’59 season. Coach Storm in his first season welded together a team of hard-fighting, never-say-die group of players under the leadership of Capfain Danny Schultz. The first game brought us face to face with one of the top powers in the conference, Lone Jack. Lone Jack led throughout for a final score of 70 to 47. The next three games were wins for the Jackets as they opened against Williamsburg at home with a 66 to 61 win and followed this with fighting wins over Knox Central and Lynn Camp on their own home grounds: Knox Central 6 to 61 and Lynn Camp 64 to 60.

Barbourville gave the Jackets their first home defeat by a score of 63 to 53, and on Dec. 18 Thomas Walker came to town to trip the Jackets by a score of 68 to 59.

.-‘
I years causing some games to be rescheduled and one thing leading to another, we ended the year with five straight losses during the month. Lone Jack started the losing streak for the Jackets by winning in an overtime game 59 to 58, and Bell County again poured it on for an 89 to 42 win. Williamsburg avenged themselves for the first two losses handed them by the Jackets with a score of 62 to 46 on February 12 in Wi I I iamsburg. Corbin again passed us by with a score of 63 to 45 and Clay County defeated the Jackets in the last game of the year by a score of 76 to 42. Although the Jackets may have lost more. games than they won, the season could not be considered a complete loss, for Captain Schultz ended up one of the top scorers in the conference and the new faces on the squad showed their potential for the 1960-61 season. We wish all the boys, whether they are leaving for college or playing for the Jackets next year, the best of luck and here’s hoping you fight as hard in all that you do.
winning their own tournament which featured outstanding play by all teams. The score: 45 to 34. Corbin held their jinx on the Yellow Jackets over from football to hand us an off night 87 to 62 defeat at Corbin on January 5th and Clay County repeated on the 8th with a score of 82 to 60 The team started rolling the next week with a win over Pineville Mountain Lions 61 to 48 and kept the streak alive through the game with Knox Central by winning in an overtime period 68 to 66 in one of the best games of the year.
Cheerleaders
Bell County on January 19 and Thomas Walker on the 21st again defeated the Jackets by scores of 62 to 43 and 64 to 49. On January 22 the Yellow Jackets visited Barbourville only to lose by a score of 61 to 51. The week was closed out with a win over Lynn Camp in the Jr. High Gym. Score: 56 to 51 The 29th saw the Jackets absorbing one of their worst losses when Bush handed them an 84 to 59 defeat on their home court.
