DRAMATICS CLUB —

:

Students of beginning dramatics study the history of drama, stagecraft, make-up, and acting. Students of advanced dramatics continue the work of beginning dramatics and occasionally present plays or reviews as assembly programs. Thus the students, while broadening their knowledge of an im portant, and often neglected, branch of litera ture, are simultaneously acquiring mental and physical poise. .

FOOTBALL Middlesboro opened the 1957 football season with high hopes for cc successful season. A squad of 40, under new head coach Dave Hurst, spent two weeks at Norris Lake in preparation for the coming season. The starting lineup consisted of 8 seniors and 3 juniors. The Jacket backfield was bolstered by two returning regulars, Ules Day and Jimmy Massengill. luniors, Charley Nagle and David Cawood, rounded out the backfield. Doyle Milligan and Lawrence JqJson were returning at guard. Clyde Mason and Ben Miller would start at tackle, Huston Ball at center, James Harville and Buddy Callison at the ends, completed the line. Eager to show their wares the Jackets took the field against Hall High. The outcome of the game was never in doubt, as Middlesboro rolled up 400 yards on the ground and in the air in cQmpletely routing the Hall team by 40-0. The following week the Jackets visited the Barbourville Tigers for their first conference game. Middlesboro quickly proved the romp over Hall was no fluke as they jumped off to a fast 13-0 lead and then scored in every quarter for a 39-0 victory. Jimmy Massengill

FIRST ROW—Bill Channell, Ben Webb, Doyle Milligan, James Harville, Buddy Callison, Ules Day, Lawrence Jackson, Jim Massengill, Stacy Smith, Mike Barrett. SECOND ROW—Coach Bob Merritt, Coach Jack Carey, Clyde Mason, Ben Miller, Dennis Guthrie, Bill Dean, John Ed Goin, Larry Lyon, Lonnie Beeler, Wilburn Conner, Bobby Buckner, Head Coach Dave E. Hurst.

and David Cawood shared scoring honors with 3 and 2 touchdowns respectively. James Harville accounted for the touchdown on a 26 yard pass from Charley Nagle. The 33rd annual clash with Pineville was moved to an earlier date because of the bad weather in October. However, the weather man moved right along with it. The game was played in a downpour on a very muddy field. At any rate the mud and rain failed to hold down th running attack of either team as Middlesboro rushed a total of 368 yards, and Pineville gained 281 Fumbles and long runs highlighted the first quarter of action but neither team was able to cross the final stripe. John Ed Gons’ 80 yard sprint to paydirt was all in vain as another Jacket was detected clipping on the play. In the second quarter David Cawood broke the ice on a 40 yard scamper. Pineville countered with a 79 yard touchdown run. Massengill ran 68 yards to the Pineville 9 and moments later Ules Day scored to make it 13-6 at the half. The second half was as wild as the first as Massengill was brought down again on the Pineville 9 after a 79 yard gain. Unable to score Middlesboro surrendered the ball on downs and on the first play Pineville scored on a 96 yard to make the score at the 3-

quarter mark 13-12. This only heartened the Jackets as they scored twice, as Cawood and Massengill sparked the drives behind fine line play. The final score was Middlesboro 27 and Pineville 12. Middlesboro’s next opponent was Lynn Camp. The Jackets, keeping the offense under wraps for the upcoming game with Corbin. Using very few plays, Middlesboro scored in every quarter and won easily 27-0. The following week Middlesboro met the No. 3 team in the state, the Corbin Red hounds. Both teams went into this game undefeated and untied. The winner of this game was virtually assured of the S. E. K. Championship, higher state ratings, and a possible bowl bid. Corbin used every break to its advantage and won 27-7. Middlesboro, without fullback Ules Day’s full-time services because of a shoulder injury, had trouble with the offense but played a great game defensively. The game was much closer than the score indicates. The Jacket defense gave up yardage but forced 5 Corbin fumbles. Middlesboro’s s c o r e the first against Corbin this year, came in the fourth quarter after trailing by 20-0. Corbin scores came on a fumble, a penalty, and 2 touchdown passes for a final victory for the Bedhounds by 27-7.

THIRD ROW—Lyle Mace, Jimmy Gooding, David Cawood, Houston Ball, Walter Taylor, Charlie Nagle, John Conner, Pat Greer, Gary Wayne Meyers, Dan Yocikum. FOURTH ROW—Burt Paynter, W. 0. Smith, Pepper Medley, Taby Jackson, Ralph Price, Kenneth Lotridge, John Loy, Ray Pace, Colley Mayes.

Middlesboro retaliated from the Corbin defeat by defeating the Knox Central Panthers 27-0. Knox Central went all out in an attempt to upset the Jackets. Central used a passing attack throughout the game and once moved to the Jacket 25 but timely interceptions and a stubborn defense pre vented a score. Middlesboro’s offense clicked in the second quarter and twice in the second half. The Yellow Jackets journeyed to Wil liamsburg to meet another swarm of Yellow Jackets. Williamsburg was undefeated and had a chance for the S. E. K. title if they won this game. Trailing by 7-0 in the second quarter and with time running out, Charley Nagle connected with a 51 yard touchdown pass to David Cawood. The Jackets were hot in the second half as they scored twice on drives of 52 and 32 yards. Middlesboro 19, Wil liamsburg 7. Middlesboro had the fight of their lives before rolling in the fourth quarter and de feating the Bell High Bobcats 21-0. Bell High gave up gobs of yardage but always stif fened their line and threw back the Jacket attack. Middlesboro led by only 7-0 going into the fourth quarter but an intercepted pass and fumble led to two more Jacket

touchdowns and won by 21-0. An unscheduled bout with the flu left the Jackets weakened by the loss of several key players. They fell behind 9-0 in the first quarter and 16-7 at the half. Middlesboro scored a quick touchdown in the 3rd quarter and it looked like the Jackets would pull the game out of the fire. However, the Owls were not to be denied as they scored once more to win 23-14. Middlesboro met the Harlan Green Dragons on the Harlan field for the final regular season game of 1957. The Jackets had numerous opportunities but couldn’t stop the powerful Harlan attack. Harlan turned a fumble, a kickoff return and a long run into 3 scores and a 20-6 victory over the Jackets. The annual J a y c e e Bowl this year matched Middlesboro against the Greene.

yule, Tennessee Green Devils. The Green Devils packed too much punch for the Jacket defense and won 32-7. Greeneville was off to a fast 13-0 lead in the first quarter and never let up as tailback Jerry Disney scored 3 touchdowns and gained a total of 325 yards in 22 carries. Middlesboro’s guard attack got nowhere against the Greeneville defense but for the first time this year the Jacket passing attack clicked. Two passes carried to the Greeneville 15 where Ules Day gained the final 15 for the only Jacket score. So another successful season comes to a close for the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets. The following seniors who wish the best of luck to next year’s team are Ules Day, Jimmy Massengill, Clyde Mason, Ben Miller, Lawrence Jackson, Doyle Milligan, Dennis Guthrie, Buddy Ccillison, Jimmy Goforth, Stacy Smith, James Harville.

BASKETBALL For the second straight year Middlesboro opened the season with a new coach at the reins. Middlesboro started off on the right foot by defeating Pruden 5 1-49. Lack of experience and tough competition sent the jackets into a fifteen game losing streak. Barbourville began the streak by handing the jackets a 72-44 defeat. Middlesboro took to the road; losing to a powerful Lone Jack five 72-50. Unable to hit a winning stride the Yellow Jackets lost to Williamsburg 84-65, Knox Central 92-35, Lynn Camp 78-61 and LaFollette 59-49. Náxt, the jackets journeyed to Bell High where they lost in the first round of the Bell High Invitational Tournament to Knox Central 76-34. The Harlan Green Dragons handed the Jackets defeat number eight 66-30. London came -to town and dealt the Jackets another defeat 82-57. The Yellow Jackets journeyed. to Corbin where they lost 83-42. In quick succession the Jackets lost to. Clay County 59-28, Pineville 61-51, Knox Central 61-36, Bell High 68-42, and Barbour yule 48-40.

The losing streak was finally broken as Middlesboro upset Lynn Camp 34-30 on the Jacket home floor. Losing to Harlan 77-50, the Jackets bounced back to sting Pineville 50-44 on a thrilling second-half finish. The greatly improved Yellow Jackets held a highly favored Lone Jack team to a 42-34 victory. Next on the schedule was Bell High who continued their winning ways, defeczting the Jackets 79-49. Middlesboro journeyed to Williamsburg to meet another swarm of Yellow Jackets. It was anybody’s ball game until the final minutes when Williamsburg pulled away to win 53-46. The second erounter with Corbin saw the Redhounds win 51-37. In the final regular season game of the year the Jackets traveled to Clay Ccunty where the S. E. K. Champs defeated the Jackets 69-35. The Yellow Jacket squad for 1957-58 was made up entirely of Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors. Without any losses via graduation the future looks bright for the Yellow Jackets. In the 51st District Tournament at Bell High, Middlesboro lost to Pineville 76-7 1.
