Welcome to the Summer issue of Construction Worx. This issue is dedicated to Plantworx, which is just a matter of days away (13th – 15th June, East of England Arena Peterborough). We are delighted to report we have 300 confirmed exhibitors and there are a whole host of new initiatives for visitors to experience, which include the Get Connected Zone which is dedicated to connected technology, and the Awesome Earthmovers Operators challenge, where big prizes are being offered. We are also pleased to announce the National Highways and Costain teams are featuring in the Partner Zone, and they are looking forward to seeing all the new innovations at the show. There are more details in the magazine, whereas exhibitors’ can book an opportunity for a private audience with the teams to showcase new technology.

The Plantworx Innovation Awards Dinner event is at full capacity, with nearly 300 guests confirmed to attend. The evening (Monday 12th June) will provide excellent networking opportunities and celebrate the most innovative products to come to market. Not forgetting that The Dark Destroyer from the quiz show, the Chase, is set to host the event which will be very entertaining.

Bennie Group get connected with MachineMax as data drives business growth

Understanding how each asset performs is critical to running a successful business when you operate a mixed fleet of over 500 machines, from large earthmovers to material handing units. With plant hire, contracting and equipment dealerships all part of the family run Bennie Group, there is a lot to manage for fourth generation Group MD, Matthew Ayres.

To find out more about its data journey Peter Haddock recently visited its head office in Northamptonshire on behalf of Construction Worx. He also helped the team connect some of its assets to the MachineMax telemetry driven fleet management solution they are rolling out across the business.

Matthew: "As a group we run quite a diverse fleet of equipment from the latest Cat D6 XE electric drive dozer to John Deere tractors, Bomag compactors, Volvo excavators and the Faresin all electric telehandler. And to keep all of these assets working hard, we have our own maintenance and repair workshops where we can perform major overhauls to equipment like our 2006 Cat 963C track loader.

"But like any business in our sector, to be successful, we not only need to ensure we have high levels of machine uptime, we also need to ensure machine utilisation levels are equally high. To do this, we recently restructured the group to pool our earthmoving, crushers, screeners and soil stabilisation equipment into our Bennie Plant rental business. This rents equipment to a range of customers and also now hires to our internal earthworks, ground engineering and soil stabilisation contracting division, Barton.

"This change paved the way to adopting a holistic approach to fleet management, allowing us to connect all of our assets. This also included those managed by our Bennie Equipment division, which specialises

in material handling sales and rental. But we were still faced with the challenge of connecting each asset category into one solution to pull off the key data we needed, like operating hours, fuel burn, carbon emissions and location. And what surprised us, particularly with the material handling equipment, was how far behind the onboard telemetry systems and technology available for us to capture data was.

"This is one of the key reasons why we chose to work with MachineMax, as the business firstly can capture information from OEMs existing APIs through the GPS network. And secondly, if this is not possible, they have a very robust sensor with strong magnets that can be simply attached to a machine. This gives us a second option for not just the newer equipment that doesn't have APIs available, but also older units like our Cat 963C."

As soon as a machine from the Bennie Group is connected to the MachineMax platform, data is captured and fed into its cloud-based solution. Here it can be accessed from any connected smartphone, tablet or computer. There is even a mobile app that can be used by staff.

Matthew: "Collecting data is one thing, but turning it into useful information that we can act upon makes it so powerful. And this is where our digital journey comes together as over the past few years, we have upgraded our hardware and integrated other software solutions that streamline our business processes.

"This has already removed a lot of manual entry tasks where mistakes can be made and given us a much greater understanding of our business performance whilst enabling us to better integrate with our customers.

Knowing how impactful this process has been gave us the confidence to further accelerate our journey into other areas of the business. It also helped us to understand what we needed from an equipment solution which led to the MachineMax integration. What I really like about its approach is the simplicity of the dashboard solution it has created. It allows us to share the right information with our team in real-time and with customers in the future."

With the roll out of connecting machines underway, I wanted to find out from Matthew what the team was going to be able to do with the information collected from each machine.

Matthew: "As part of the process of finding a supplier to help us, we engaged with every aspect of the business and key customers to understand what information they wanted. For example, our maintenance team are interested in reviewing machine hours and planning in servicing and maintenance for our whole fleet. Whereas our

contracts team are more interested in looking at machine utilisation and fuel burn for the equipment working on a particular job site.

"And when it came to customers, working on larger projects, the message was clear. They want to understand things like carbon emissions, fuel burn relative to activity, and idle time, all of which are critical moving forward. Having this information is particularly important when trying to measure productivity and efficiency. And, of course, with a significant increase in fuel prices, we will be working across the board to support key areas like operator training and realworld data-driven fleet management decisions.

"We see a greater movement into machine control to increase productivity and recognise that, in some cases, we will be able to compare running costs from one OEM brand to another. This, in turn, will inform our future equipment fleet purchasing and disposal decisions. Getting all our fleet connected is the next step that will make this all possible and, as we move forward, we will be able to use data to continue our business transformation. The ultimate goal is to use data-driven insights to deliver a better service to our customers whilst reducing our overall impact on the environment."

The future of green construction - how can the construction industry become more sustainable?

In this issue of Construction Worx we feature an interesting Q&A with Tom Hyde, Technical Support Manager for TotalEnergies UK. Hyde shares his insights on how the construction industry can embrace sustainability, discussing innovative technologies and methodologies.

Q: With the 2050 net zero deadline looming, it seems most of the industry has recognised the importance of taking climate action. What immediate steps are being taken (or should be) to achieve this?

A: Whilst recognising the problem is vital, good intentions are a drop in the ocean - the route to zero emissions will require decisive action.

One-third of global energy emissions in 2021 arose either directly or indirectly from the buildings sector, with around 6% of the global total coming from manufacturing construction materials, such as steel and cement, according to the International Energy Agency. In March, Green Alliance also found that the construction industry is the UK’s biggest user of non-renewable materials and generates almost two-thirds of the country’s total waste output.

Operators on site are having to adopt innovative solutions to ensure they are compliant and competitive. At the same time, the regulatory environment is shifting fast and reforms affecting the sector across every stage of the construction process are taking effect. For example, the 2021 Environment Act introduced measures to ensure that the resources companies are using in their operations are both sustainable and efficient, and has brought in detailed requirements in terms of waste management and biodiversity protection.

Q: What can machinery operators and industry leaders do to maximise operational efficiency whilst reducing their energy consumption and carbon footprint?

A: Companies looking to create immediate progress on their journey towards lower carbon emissions need to examine the ‘material’ components of a construction site.

Historically, lubricants have been seen as a something of a technical detail, but according to TotalEnergies’ research, the right lubricants can help significantly reduce fuel and energy consumption, providing substantive benefits including cost savings.

With construction equipment and machinery exposed to extreme conditions from dramatic variations in temperature to heavy loads, modern fluids designed to clean and degrease heavy machinery come with important benefits for workers and the planet. Alongside the functional benefits, it serves a sustainable purpose as keeping machinery working efficiently and for longer is less carbon intensive than frequently scrapping and replacing machinery. TotalEnergies’ Rubia 1000 and 2000 are great examples of engine oils suited to this purpose.

The right lubricant partner can support operators with maximising operational efficiency through technology. Data-driven predictive maintenance, such as predictive analysis and lubrication maintenance software, can increase energy savings by using

fuel economy type of lubricants along with specific low friction synthetic lubricants for certain applications. These may also provide improved lubricant lifetime, reducing material usage and waste.

Q: Whilst short term changes are essential, what steps can industry professionals and regulators take to ensure sustainable practices are adopted in the long term across all stages of the construction process?

A: Developing an industry-wide practice of transparency around carbon reduction goals will help embed the practices that will drive forward the sector’s sustainability agenda in the long term. By setting carbon reduction mandates at the planning stage of each project, industry stakeholders can ensure they are making the right choices to meet these goals.

Alongside project accountability is the need for stakeholders to apply the same reduction standards to their suppliers and subcontractors as to their own processes. TotalEnergies, for instance, has introduced a number of goals to support sustainable procurement practises including integrating environmental criteria in calls for tenders for priority categories, implementing an environmental audit framework for suppliers' sites, and ensuring that at least 90% of top suppliers have set targets for GHG emission reductions by 2025.

Q: Government regulations mean that site operations are required to have strong recycling credentials – how can lubricants and greases play a role in this?

A: To comply with biodiversity protection laws and waste management, site operations must prioritise products and materials which have established transparent recycling credentials - including the use of biodegradable lubricants & greases.

Operators can choose lubricants which not only meet the requirements of the major OEMs but which are fully biodegradable and formulated from renewable raw materials. These products can help reduce engine fuel consumption, while being suitable for use in sensitive environments, such as locations close to rivers, agricultural land or forests, with the risks associated with accidental leakages minimised.

Q: The UK Green Building Council has suggested that investing in a circular economy is one of the fastest ways to reduce carbon emissions and waste. How can this become a reality at a practical level?

A: Adopting material circularity could be one of the most impactful carbon reduction levers available to construction firms. It presents a specific opportunity to tackle ‘embodied carbon’ - the carbon emissions generated upstream before a building is completed such as emissions associated with materials.

Deploying renewable energy sources to power construction sites –where possible - is a practical opportunity for construction projects to reduce overall emissions. Design considerations such as the reuse of materials, increasing the use of recycled or partially-recycled materials, and retrofitting instead of demolition can also all assist in reducing embodied carbon.

Q: What role with the government play in the sectors’ net zero transition?

A: The UK government will play an active role in supporting the energy transition. Alongside the development and implementation of policies on the construction and operational emissions of buildings, the public sector as a buyer is increasingly prioritising ‘green’ tenders

The government is increasingly adopting a ‘carrot-and-stick’ approach to encourage companies to choose more sustainable routes through rewarding green efforts with subsidies - or closing opportunities to those not doing enough.

Therefore, it’s essential for businesses to evaluate every element of their construction toolkit – from overhauling the supply chain right through to more efficient mechanical maintenance. This means not only will they be ahead of the regulatory curve but could be in better positions to be awarded government-led infrastructure contracts. A focus on energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions is not just financially smart, it is also imperative for the welfare of our planet and long-term business resilience. Carbon emission reduction will require a holistic approach, from macro-changes such as government incentives opting for renewable energy sources and re-using materials, to incremental changes that can be actioned in the short-term, such as choosing the most efficient products for operational maintenance.

Rugged and reliable hydraulic control in a traditional industry

Andy Peacock, Engineering Manager Mechanical of Webtec talks about maximising productivity in crushing and screening.

Traditionally, material crushing has been carried out in permanent locations with the material being transported to the crushing plant by heavy duty tipping trucks. In recent times however, mobile crushing plant has often proved to be more cost effective. Such equipment can be transported to its required location and then moved by means of wheels or caterpillar tracks to any convenient position. The same principles used in crushing and screening are now also applied to shredding, washing and recycling machines used to shred tree trunks, clean aggregate or sort waste into different streams for recycling. Mobile crushing plant may use either electro-mechanical or hydraulic drive for the main crushing mechanism but auxiliary functions are most often carried out by means of hydraulic cylinders and motors, which are ideally suited to operation in harsh working environments. Auxiliary functions can include such things as track and conveyor drives, conveyor folding and positioning, screen and deflector plate operation etc.

Webtec has a long history in screening and crushing

For over 40 years Webtec has supported crushing and screening OEMs with rugged and reliable hydraulic valves used to control the speed of actuators with varying loads, such as conveyor drive motors. The nature of the job means that motors can see rapidly varying loads but continuous steady throughput is still required to ensure that all machines work harmoniously together. To ensure this happens machine designers have put particular emphasis on using pressure compensated flow controls, for which the Webtec range is world renowned.

The Webtec range also includes, two port flow control valves, three port priority flow dividers and mono-block directional, flow and pressure control valves all widely used on crushing and screening machines as well as in countless other off-highway mobile machines.

2-port vs 3-port valves

The Webtec VFC Series of pressure compensated flow control valves will ensure that the actuator speed remains virtually constant over all load conditions. Once set, the weather-proof adjusting knob can be locked in position to avoid any inadvertent adjustment. When using a fixed displacement pump, the excess flow not required by a conveyor drive can be diverted to another machine function while maintaining a constant flow to the conveyor. This can be achieved by using a VFD priority flow divider from the Webtec range.

Alternatively, the excess pump flow can be directed to tank at a pressure only slightly higher than the conveyor drive pressure, rather than full relief valve pressure. This ensures maximum system efficiency with simpler, fixed displacement pump arrangements. If remote speed adjustment is required a proportional version of the priority flow divider enables an electronic signal to be used to vary the priority flow.

Monoblock valves

A flow divider can also be combined with a directional valve to enable the priority flow to be switched between two conveyor drives. The CV120 combines a single directional, flow and pressure control in one compact, simple-to-install unit, with the opportunity for multiple valves to be connected in series using a high-pressure carry-over function with a secondary relief valve. Despite its compact design the CV120 doesn’t compromise on functionality, using the same pressure compensated flow control technology as used in the VFD range.

Auxiliary valves

When the movement of two unequally loaded actuators needs to be synchronised, for example with track drives or conveyor positioning, the

FDC Series flow divider/combiner can be used to ensure equal flows to or from each actuator, irrespective of load. Certain functions on mobile crushers need to be interlocked to prevent dangerous or damaging situations. For example, operation of the track drive may need to be prevented unless a conveyor is moved to a transport position. The mechanically operated SV/DV 80 diverter valve can thus be used to prevent flow to a certain function unless mechanically actuated by the appropriate section of the machine.

Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance

For pumps and motors which operate for long periods of time, continuously monitoring their performance can provide an early warning of a potentially costly failure. The CTA flow monitor can be installed in the pump outlet line to monitor pump flow rate and/or in the supply line to a conveyor motor for example. By comparing the pump or motor flow rate with its rotational speed a rapid assessment can be made of the component’s state of wear and action taken before a catastrophic failure occurs. In addition, the CTA flow monitor can be observed remotely via the machine’s telematic system.

The RFS 200 flow hours counter is a new device which can be used as part of a preventive maintenance programme. Installed in the feed line to critical hydraulic components, it monitors their actual usage time thus enabling routine maintenance to take place when the component is approaching the end of its useful life.

Excavator mounted solutions

For short-term tasks such as demolition work, where the task involved does not warrant the use of a dedicated machine, crushing attachments are available which can be mounted onto an excavator boom and used to process smaller quantities of material.

The DHM Series hydraulic multimeter can be an invaluable tool, not only for system troubleshooting but also for optimising the set-up of attachments such as crusher buckets. It enables the measurement of flow, pressure, peak pressure and temperature and the unit can then transfer data wirelessly for automatic calculation of hydraulic power and volumetric efficiency. Also useful for system troubleshooting is the HPM7000 Series portable data logger. This unit has a variety of different modes with the ability to log up to 16 million measured values per test at a variable interval from 1 ms.

Many of the leading OEMs in the crushing and screening industry have therefore come to rely on Webtec products owing to their performance and reliability while operating under the harshest of conditions found in this industry.

Global market outlook

Construction equipment sales have fallen back form the unprecedented high of 2021. A soft landing is expected, but there are of course risks and uncertainties around this.

Global construction equipment sales hit a record high of nearly 1.3 million machines sold in 2021 as stimulus spending, job protection schemes and low interest rates drove a boom in economic growth after the sharp downturn of 2020.

That boom continued for most countries last year, the exception being China. Sales in the world excluding China grew 7 per cent in 2022, following on from a 19 per cent increase in 2021 in the same territories. In fact, sales could have been much higher were it not for the on-going supply chain issues and shipping bottlenecks (although shipping was getting back to normal by the end of the year).

In contrast, the Chinese market had a miserable year in 2022. Having boomed due to stimulus spending in 2020 and 2021, sales tumbled 39 per cent in 2022 due to the re-imposition of Covid lockdowns in numerous major cities, along with debt defaults and a general reset in the real estate market. The sharp dip in housebuilding was a particularly heavy blow for the construction equipment sector.

Despite the downturn in China pulling the global equipment market down by 2 per cent overall, 2022 still saw the second highest volume of machinery ever sold. Another positive was that order backlogs were so full and lead times so long at the end of the year in the world, excluding China, that it gave the industry confidence that good retail volumes would continue well into 2023, despite the weakening economic outlook.

Off-Highway Research’s forecast is for a 7 per cent decline in global sales in 2023.

This is a slightly steeper downturn than envisaged a year previously, due to the weakness of the Chinese market. Stripping China out of the equation, the remaining countries of the world will only see a 5 per cent downturn overall.

Off-Highway Research would still classify the 2022-2025 downturn as a soft landing. Only single-digit year-on-year falls in equipment sales are expected, and the volume of machines sold throughout the forecast period should stay above 1 million units per year. Prior to the current up-swing, such a volume was only achieved twice before.

EUROPE

Construction equipment sales in Europe rose 4 per cent in 2022 to 216,861 units. This increase from 2021’s already high level of 208,288 machines sold maintained the market at a high level, and comparable with the previous record set in 2007.

The strongest growth in 2022 was seen in the larger markets of Southern Europe – most notably Italy, which saw sales rise an impressive 18 per cent, while Spain’s 17 per cent growth was also well above average. France also performed well with an 8 per cent rise in sales, thanks to broad demand for both heavy and compact equipment.

Growth in the UK was more subdued at 4 per cent, but the volume of equipment sold was the highest ever seen. Meanwhile the German market declined 1 per cent, but this must be seen in the context of the extraordinarily high number of machines which have been sold in the country in the last four to five years.

Off-Highway Research’s forecast for Europe is essentially for the market to stabilise at a high level. Although single-digit percentage annual declines in sales are expected for the next three years, the market is forecast to remain above 200,000 units over the medium term. Prior to the current peak, a volume above 200,000 machines sold was only achieved once before for a single year in 2007.

A slowdown in housebuilding due to rising interest rates represents a threat to compact equipment sales. However, Europe’s infrastructure markets are strong, which should stimulate sales of larger earthmoving equipment.

NORTH AMERICA

North America was the pick of the major markets last year, with an 8 per cent increase in sales to take demand to a record high of 318,855 machines sold. Compact tracked loaders are now firmly established as the most popular equipment type in the region and mini excavator sales have also grown to a significant level. Sales of these machines have largely been at the expense of skid-steer loaders and backhoe loaders.

Although a modest 1 per cent decline in sales is expected this year, the market will still enjoy the second highest volumes ever seen. The long lead times for equipment mean that suppliers are confident of sales well into the third quarter of the year, even though rising interest rates are starting to cool-off the housing market.

While this is expected to lead to a fall in sales of smaller equipment types, infrastructure investment is on the rise in the region, thanks in part to the stimulus plans which were put in place during the pandemic years.

OUTLOOK AND RISKS

The global forecast is for a soft landing, with modest downturns in sales over the next three years, but with volumes remaining at historically high levels. This is broadly based on the premise that infrastructure investment is maintained and that although interest rates are rising, they will only slow residential construction, rather than push it over a cliff.

However, there are risks to the forecast and they are almost entirely on the downside. Inflation was a serious issue throughout 2022 and although improving, it remained too high in early 2023. Add to that the war in Ukraine, which continues to heighten inflationary pressures worldwide and is therefore also exerting upward pressure on interest rates.

There have only been two previous peaks when global equipment sales exceeded 1 million units – just prior to the global financial crisis when the market overheated and then again in the early 2010s, driven by stimulus in China. In both cases, annual sales of more than 1 million units of equipment were only sustained for one year – 2007 and 2010.

But 2023 is likely to be a sixth consecutive year of annual sales in excess of 1 million units. When a slowdown in activity comes, excess young equipment in fleets around the world could be a barrier to new machine sales, exacerbating the slowdown for the industry.

On the other hand, a prolonged period of historically high volumes is not necessarily a problem. Construction equipment sales always grow worldwide over the long-term as the global population grows and with it the requirement for buildings and infrastructure. There are also demographic changes which drive the adoption of machinery such as skills shortages and higher wages for manual labour, as well as the retirement of the construction industry’s aging workforce.

Forecasting is a challenge at the best of times, but even more so when in uncharted territory.

Hydrogen Outlook Continues: The Rise of the Hydrogen ICE

In the first part of this series on hydrogen we explored some of the key trends surrounding the topic. In this second part, we will consider the outlook for H2-ICE (hydrogen internal combustion engine) based on the latest announcements from major OEMs in the commercial vehicle and non-road segments. We will also discuss what this might mean for technology and provide a market outlook.

Engine Developments

At Bauma in November of last year, we witnessed the unveiling of several hydrogen engines, including Liebherr’s H964 XL four-cylinder and H966 six-cylinder engines. In March’s Conexpo in Las Vegas, the number of engines on display was even greater and included those from suppliers who were absent at Bauma.

The engine-dominant hall at ConExpo featured JCB’s 4.8-litre AB H2 engine and Cummins Fuel Agnostic X15H 15-litre engine (unfortunately not named the Chimera engine), which boasts three heads for diesel, natural gas, and hydrogen variants. The other two engine OEMs not present at Bauma, Deutz and the newly renamed HD Hyundai Engine (formerly Doosan), displayed their 7.8-litre and 11-litre hydrogen engines respectively. Kubota's 3.8-litre engine was also showcased, with the company announcing that it would not be limited to PowerGen applications as previously stated at Bauma.

Both Cummins and JCB are heavily investing in these new engines, as well as test and development facilities in the UK. Therefore, it will be crucial for hydrogen burnt in ICEs to be considered a Net Zero fuel in future UK legislation for both non-road and commercial vehicle applications. With the European Commission now including H2-ICE in its new heavy-duty CO2 proposals, the technology is expected to play

a key role in reducing carbon emissions in heavier applications. The US EPA also announced that H2-ICE, with "neat" hydrogen (not including diesel pre-injection), will be counted as zero emissions. Recent work being completed by the Advanced Propulsion Centre and Cenex for DESNZ will likely recommend H2-ICE as a major pathway for low carbon for NRMM (non-road mobile machinery).

JCB Engine Cummins X15 Fuel Agnostic

The debate between early IDI (in-direct injection) and DI (direct injection) fuel systems for these engines will play out by segment. Early engine models are expected to use IDI port fuel injection, for which the technology and manufacturing readiness is higher. These engines may have lower specific power and lower overall efficiency but will cost less. For these smaller engines, the lower demands may offer an acceptable trade off between performance and cost. For larger engines, the adoption of DI may come a couple of years later. With larger engines having higher durability requirements, the longer lead time will allow for more demanding development and testing.

Development continues to accelerate, driven in part by commercial vehicle applications. Recent symposiums in Vienna and Gothenburg

have featured presentations on the future of hydrogen, particularly in relation to aftertreatment for on-road legislation, following the announcement of Euro 7 earlier this year. Under European legislation, hydrogen engines will likely be considered net-zero if they produce less than 5g CO2 per t/km at a vehicle level, with the residual largely comprised of burnt lubrication oil. However, in California, the most stringent emissions region for NRMM by 2030, the ban on heavy-duty trucks will not allow for hydrogen internal combustion engines (ICE). It remains to be seen whether this ban will be adopted for California’s non-road zero-emission rules that are currently under development.

While fuel cells are widely adopted across the commercial vehicle segment, their adoption is likely to be more limited in NRMM. Many OEMs have stated that the H2-ICE is a more durable approach for the demanding NRMM duty cycles. However, fuel cells could still be interesting for smaller applications, such as materials handling and small construction applications. For larger applications, the fuel cell is being tested in port handling, articulated and rigid dump trucks for mining and quarrying.

Due to the pace of investment and legislators' zeroemission approach, it is expected that all major OEMs across the commercial and NRMM segments will have at least one hydrogen engine in their portfolio and available for sale commercially between 2025 and 2028. The first low volume products are expected to come to market in 2024. By 2030, multiple models will be available across OEMs and segments.

In KGP’s latest xEV forecasts for the CV and non-road segment, over 70,000 new vehicles and machines could use H2-ICE, increasing to over 1 million by 2050. However, because these will be higher fuel-use applications, greater than 10% of new machine demand could be H2-ICE based. In all scenarios, a shortfall will still need to be met by using low carbon diesel, such as HVO in the short term and potentially E-Diesel/ Fischer-Tropsch-Diesel (FTD) in the longer term.

The major challenge for hydrogen remains the availability of green hydrogen, which will be necessary for net-zero emissions. However, the infrastructure and supply are still under development, and initially, less carbon-intensive forms of hydrogen may supplement green hydrogen. The cost of hydrogen is also an issue, as TCO models suggest that less than £4/kg will be needed to make it cost-competitive, and this largely depends on renewable energy and curtailed electricity to produce green hydrogen. The ongoing analysis at KGP will assess the fuel mix for both new machines and the existing population (aka parc) of machines in use.

Future challenges will include meeting the demand for hydrogen and finding solutions to get it to the site. Part three of this series in July will consider the hydrogen demand outlook and the solutions being considered to get it to the site.

What’s new at Plantworx 2023?

On the Excavator Forklift stand visitors will see a new Excavator Forklift attachment, which has been patented, and can be easily attached to micro or mini excavators, converting them into forklifts capable of lifting pallets weighing between 1000kg and 2000kg. The attachment comes with an adjustable pressure relief valve on the lift cylinder, ensuring that the maximum fork capacity is approximately the weight of the excavator. The lift is powered by the hammer service and controlled by the hammer pedal, while tilt is controlled by the dipper lever.

In addition to forklift capabilities, the attachment also includes a 1000kg x 750mm reach jib with a hook height of 2.6m for handling bags and slung loads. A 200mm lift and carry version is available for use when high lift is not required. The attachment also features an

articulated axle that allows one wheel to be 150mm above the other, providing excellent roughsite performance. The Excavator Forklift attachment offers landscapers and small builders a labour-saving solution for their work sites.

Rotar Engineering has introduced an innovative new product, the Fully Integrated Quickcoupler Adapter, specifically designed to overcome the shortcomings of the industrystandard Symmetrical Quick Coupler. This year GOMACO will introduce the world’s first battery-powered slipform curb machine, the CC-1200e, to the UK market, at Plantworx.

The GOMACO CC-1200e electric curb machine is equipped with a power dense 48 VDC lithium-ion battery pack. The result is a paver with zero-exhaust emissions, reduced vibrations, and zero engine noise. The

Avant Tecno, a renowned expert in loader technology hailing from Finland, has recently launched two new models in its 600 Series that boast of an upgraded engine. The 645i and 650i models are considered the most powerful loaders in their respective size classes worldwide, as per the company. Even though these new machines have similar dimensions and lifting capabilities as the previous 600 series models, they come with a more powerful engine. These models feature Kubota’s 33kW/44hp diesel engine, which provides ample power and torque for high pulling force and speed-intensive work. Avant claims that its competitors lack machines as efficient as these in the same size range.

The EU Stage V emission standard for non-road mobile machinery requires a catalytic converter and a particulate filter for diesel engines above 19kW. Avant is the first manufacturer to introduce such loaders with the specified size class in the market. The 645i has a single-speed Kubota V1505CRT diesel engine, while the 650i features a two-speed version of the same. The four-cylinder 1498cc turbocharged common rail engine delivers a power output of 33kW/44hp, and the oxidation catalyst and particulate filter handle exhaust aftertreatment, without the need for any additives like AdBlue.

Takeuchi UK has added a new model to its 3-Series excavator range, the TB350R short-tail swing compact excavator. This is the company’s first short-tail model in the five-tonne class, and it has a rear swing overhang of just 75mm and weighs 5095kg. The excavator has a maximum dig depth of 3575mm, a dump height of 3945mm, and a ground reach of 5925mm. The machine is powered by a Stage V ready engine with 32.4 kW and a four-pump hydraulic system, providing a bucket breakout force of 37.3kN.

The TB350R comes standard with the Takeuchi Fleet Management (TFM) telematics system, which provides owners and operators with machine health vitals and condition, run time (hours), machine location, remote diagnostics, scheduled maintenance reminders, and customisable alert settings. The excavator will be launched in the UK at Plantworx.

Straight from Bauma, making a major presence will be the new TB395W, Wheeled excavator, widely anticipated by the plant industry in the UK. The new TB395W will be demonstrated to the max in the Takeuchi Dig Zone and static on the Takeuchi stand, so all visitors will have a chance to get a close look at the redesigned ergonomic 3-series style on one of the most compact wheeled excavators available.

The brand-new battery powered TB20e mini excavator will be taking charge of Takeuchi Time, a timed operator challenge where visitors can win daily prizes. The competition is hosted by Dave Vickers @ diggingwithdave2023 and tests operators precision skills and speed on the newest fully electric Takeuchi.

Visitors can expect to meet the Bobcat T7X Compact Track Loader, which Bobcat say is ‘your window into the future of the compact equipment industry.’ With the introduction of the zero-emissions Bobcat T7X, the manufacturer is shaking up the industry again.

The T7X is completely battery-powered and equipped to outperform its diesel-powered counterparts. The heart of the T7X is its powerful, 62-kilowatt lithium-ion battery. Each charge can support common daily work operations for up to four hours of continuous operation time and a full day of operation during intermittent use. After a recharge, the T7X is ready to do the tough work again. Unlike other compact loaders, the T7X doesn’t rely on a hydraulic system to transfer power to the machine’s work group. Instead, it features an electrical drive system consisting of electric motors and ball screw actuators.

DEVELON, formerly known as Doosan Construction Equipment, will be exhibiting for the first time in the UK. Several of the products on display are being seen for the first time in the UK. These include the new DX63-7 6 tonne and DX85R-7 8 tonne mini-excavators in the Static section of the stand and the new DX250WMH-7 material handler in the Demonstration area.

Alan Reason, power brand manager, said that FPT Industrial engines on display at Plantworx will include the very latest F28 Stage V which he says offers operators a more compact engine than previously, but still offers the efficiency and high power needed in the construction industry.

EMS Limited will be showcasing the Optimas VPM self-propelled vacuum kerb layer. The VPM is designed to handle a standard pallet with

a maximum width of 1320mm and has a carrying capacity of 1600kg

The VPM’s built-in crane arm, can lift a 140kg kerb stone and work a full 360° radius around the machine moving the load safely to a distance of 3m. Powered by a Honda petrol or Hatz diesel engine, the VPM allows safe and simple positioning of heavy slabs or kerbs by a single person.

The VPM will be joined by the Optimas Finliner, the multi-talented bucket designed for accurate material placement for hard shoulders, foundation for kerbs and gutters and for backfilling of trenches.

The third Optimas product EMS will be showing is the Multi6 M paver clamp. Designed to be carried by any conventional excavator, backhoe loader or wheeled loader, the Multi6 M can pick up paviours covering 0.6m2 up to 1.5m2 and up to 240mm thick before accurately placing them onto a prepared surface. The simple, yet effective design allows for the rapid and safe installation of large areas of paving by a single operative.

This will be Robustrack’s fourth time exhibiting at the Plantworx event and the company has planned its biggest and best show stand to date.  With both a static and demonstration area to their plot visitors can see for the first time Robustrack attachments in action.

Moving Intelligence has launched a new tracking device called the Mi01 Sentry Device, which is specifically designed to combat recent criminal trends. The device is a state-of-the-art after-theft recovery unit that utilizes GPS, GSM, and the LORAWAN protocol for precise location tracking, even in hard-to-trace places like shipping containers. The Mi01 Sentry Device has a longer-range transmission that makes it possible to locate stolen assets where other tracking technologies fail. Using AI and machine learning, the cameras detect and recognise people within the pre-defined detection zone and reliably warn the driver visually and/or audibly before a possible collision occurs. Image processing is built-in to the camera, meaning no other hardware is required. CAREYE® is a premium AI camera that is also predictive. It will accurately evaluate images from cameras fitted to the vehicle and is able to calculate the future course of motion of nearby people or objects on the nearside of a vehicle. Based on this data, the system reliably and accurately warns the driver in real-time of a possible collision before it occurs. Brigade will also be showcasing its latest concept system, Brigade Fusion, which uses sensor fusion technology to combine Brigade’s range of safety devices, including its 360-degree camera and radar obstacle detection, with M2M RTLS (Real Time Location System) technology. This allows the system to predict high-risk events; providing the operator with appropriate and prompt alerts, and, if required, signals the machine to prevent movement, slow down or stop entirely if its operator is unable to react in time.

Plantworx and Primary Engineer hold celebration event at Plantworx

The biennial Plantworx Construction Equipment Exhibition, together with the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), has reaffirmed its alliance with educational organisation Primary Engineer to launch the latest STEM-based construction project for primary schools in the Peterborough region.

Since 2015, the collaboration between Plantworx, the CEA, and Primary Engineer has fostered and inspired many aspiring engineers from local schools. This year, the partnership will debut a construction project that invites students to employ their STEM abilities in designing either a dumper truck or a tower crane, adding a touch more excitement to the Plantworx event The school projects will be presented and assessed at Plantworx on Thursday, June 15, 2023, during the "Student Day."

Addressing the Engineering Skills Gap

It is crucial to enhance young people's engagement with STEM subjects, as these fields often act as gateways to careers in the industry. An essential part of this objective is recognising and tackling the inadequate growth in the number of females attracted to engineering and science, which currently does not significantly influence the gender balance within the sector.

Ten schools from the Peterborough area are expected to participate, and a panel of judges from sponsoring companies, including GAP, Caterpillar, Xwatch Safety Solutions, Flannery Plant Hire, Gomaco, and Datatag, will evaluate the students' projects.

In this cooperative effort, students will collaborate in teams to develop their projects – the teams will then present their designs at Plantworx on Thursday, June 15, as part of the Student Day.

ECV offers an advanced emissions identification solution to create greener construction sites

The current Public Health Emergency that is poor air quality is now a top priority for local authorities across the UK.

Pollution from road traffic had been an immediate focus and Clean Air Zones and green taxis and busses are achieving good early results. Following this success the sights of planners and environmental teams is shifting to where else impacts can be made quickly and easily.

The construction sector has a vital role in economic growth, but also provides challenges in respect of pollution as construction projects, with the associated plant required to complete them are a major contributor to air pollution, both for nitrogen dioxide and fine particulates. In London alone data has shown that on average around 34% of PM10 particulates and 15% of PM2.5s can be attributed to construction machinery, and levels can be much higher in specific high traffic locations.

Construction machinery, or ‘non-road mobile machinery’ (NRMM)

is almost all diesel driven and subject to EU type approval standards, or stages, in the same way as car engines are classified by their Euro standard. For a local authority, policing car emissions through Clean Air Zones can be achieved through automatic numberplate recognition. For NRMM, with no ‘number’ plate or data held by the DVLA the challenge is far more complex. And whilst NRMM engines carry emissions data, it is encoded on an engine plate and requires specialist knowledge to decode it.

CESAR ECV is the latest initiative by the Construction Equipment Association (CEA) which means the managing of NRMM emissions is now far easier and can be done at a glance! The combination of manufacturer provided electronic emissions data, a secure database synced to a free portal and colour coded visible registration labels mean

that CESAR ECV has created a DVLA for NRMM. Now, for the first time, reading, understanding and managing emissions from construction machinery is as simple as managing emissions from road vehicles.

ECV is ¬fitted as standard by 80% of NRMM manufacturers for the UK market. Most of the remaining 20% offer ECV as a customer specified option. Around 2,000 pieces of ECV enabled NRMM are entering the UK construction fleet every month.

Most importantly, ECV and all of its functionality is free of charge to the end user. ECV labels are now ubiquitous across most major UK construction projects meaning that it has never been simpler to understand and record the engine emission levels of NRMM working on a site.

The ECV labels provides three levels of emissions verification:

1. Visual inspection of the colour coded label; different engine Stages are represented by different coloured labels. The emissions Stage of a machine can be checked visually even before the machine is unloaded at site.

3. Full deep dive via desk based Clearing Portal; the ECV Clearing Portal enabled registered users to conduct a full ‘deep dive’ of the machine emissions data and unique identifiers and generate reports.

4. The Clearing Portal enables plant suppliers to pre-register machines using the ECV number alone. Plant manifests can be quickly and easily created and sent electronically to site management teams, with full details of the machine, its TAN and its emissions Stage.

Daily Demonstrations of Cat 308 CR with Ease of Use Technologies at Plantworx

Introducing the Cat® 6- to 9-tonne mini hydraulic excavators with E-Fence and Indicate Technologies.

Cat® 306 CR, 308 CR and 309 CR mini excavators can be equipped with Ease-of-Use E-Fence which constrains machine motion to within operator preset boundaries and with Ease of Use Indicate that helps operators reach grade faster. These technologies are ideal for working in tight spots and alongside roads as well as digging footings, drainage and septic systems, irrigation, electric utilities, and similar applications. They allow operators of all experience levels to work more efficiently and consistently.

Preset boundaries with E-Fence

Ease of Use E-Fence automatically constrains machine motion to within operator preset boundaries for ceiling, floor, wall and swing. Operators work confidently and efficiently by avoiding structures overhead, underground, in front, or to the left or right of the machine.

Once the E-Fence range limits are established using the machine’s touchscreen monitor, no part of the boom, stick or bucket will pass the predefined limit(s). Setting height limits using E-Fence Ceiling

helps operators avoid obstacles such as powerlines, ceilings or tree limbs. Fibre optic cables and underground utilities are protected by the defined depth limits established with E-Fence Floor. Structures in front of the machine are protected by E-Fence Wall and, where the mini excavator is working next to live traffic, walkways or loading trucks, E-Fence Swing is ideal to avoid these areas.

E-Fence helps new operators to work within set boundaries and to minimize job costs from repairs and downtime due to equipment damage and fines from damaging utilities or other structures. For experienced operators, E-Fence allows them to work more efficiently and safely with fewer ground personnel required around the work area.

Faster grades with Indicate

An entry-level grade system, MHE Ease of Use Indicate provides visual and audible indications to bucket position compared to target grade to assist operators in cutting to exact specifications the first time. Regardless of skill level, operators reach target grade faster

with improved precision and reduced need for on-the-ground grade checking to create a safer work environment and saving cost overall.

Both MHE Ease of Use E-Fence and Indicate are packaged with Swing Assist and Bucket Assist features at no added cost. Swing Assist, also referred to as return to trench, automatically stops machine swing at one or two set points, ideal for truck loading and trenching applications. It helps operators hit more repetitive swing targets with less effort, reducing fuel use and improving cycle times. Bucket Assist maintains last known bucket angle and keeps the cut accurate in sloping, leveling, fine grading and trenching applications.

Awesome Earthmovers host Operator Challenge at Plantworx 2023

Plantworx has built a reputation for pioneering innovation and showcasing leading technological advancements from all sectors of the construction industry. Yet there remains a key place in the cab for the skilled operator to shine….

Awesome Earthmovers has been invited by the Plantworx team to host the inaugural Operator Challenge at the 2023 show.

AE’s have teamed up with some of the leading names in the construction industry to bring a range of eight different challenges to the arena where operators of varying skill levels can pitch themselves against each other in a series of timed trials.

Whilst many traditional operator trials competitions are aimed at experienced operators, the Awesome Earthmovers Operator Challenge has been designed to allow operators of any skill level to take part.

The event will be hosted by our good friend Peter Haddock from Content with Media and will feature guest appearances by many of the UK’s leading social media influencers such as Amy the Digger Girl aka Amy Underwood, Conor the Digger Driver aka Conor Kelly, Bearded Excavation aka Lloyd Peckham, Lord Muck aka Kurt Mills, Tracklass1 aka Lana Edwards and newcomer, Ben ‘the operator’ Wade, who has a very bright future ahead of him.

Dale Hawkins, Director, Awesome Earthmovers said, “The trials have been designed to be 100% accurate and 100% fair with each registered operator being supplied with their own timecard and invited to complete all 8 challenges.

Each time a challenge is completed, the time is officially recorded and the operator with the fastest combined time including penalties on the last day of the show will be crowned the winner.”

Special Show Offers and Meet New Team Members on the CPA Stand at Plantworx

The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) is exhibiting at Plantworx and the CPA team will be on hand to welcome visitors to stand B-EDB.

The CPA is a leading trade association for the plant-hire sector in the UK with over 1,800 members who supply some 85% of hired plant to the construction and allied industries.

It has been a busy few months for the association, with judging taking place for the CPA Stars of the Future Awards, which recognise outstanding apprentices and trainees in the construction plant sector. The Stars of the Future awards ceremony is due to take place just a few weeks after Plantworx, on 6th July 2023.

Planning is also well underway for the CPA Conference 2023 and visitors to the CPA stand at Plantworx can take advantage of a special show offer. The CPA Conference 2023 will take place on 9th November 2023 at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre near Coventry.

The conference theme is ‘Facing the Challenges in the Plant-hire Sector’ and there will be a series of panel discussions addressing some of the core issues that are of most importance to CPA members and the wider construction sector right now, such as the latest developments in alternative fuels, and theft and fraud in the industry.

Visitors to the CPA stand can pick up a leaflet with a special show offer for CPA Conference 2023 delegate tickets. The standard delegate ticket price is £75 plus VAT but the flyer will entitle delegates to a 20% discount off the ticket price until 30th June 2023.

Plantworx attendees will also have the opportunity to meet new additions to the CPA team. Katie Kelleher recently joined the CPA in the newly created role of CPA Technical and Development Officer. In her new role, she is providing CPA members with guidance and advice on technical, training and safety subjects, and helping produce and maintain the CPA’s large range of safety and technical publications. She is also helping represent the CPA on a number of industry-led initiatives and working groups.

Katie’s construction story started in 2014 when she was the first woman to commence the Lifting Technician Apprenticeship with Select Plant Hire, before becoming a Crane Operator working on large projects such as Crossrail and the Tideway Project. She has also worked as an Appointed Person and is well known throughout the construction industry for being a champion for women and young people working in construction.

Katie has already won many accolades in her career so far. In 2021 she was declared one of the Top 100 Women in Construction and she has been selected as a ‘LinkedIn Top Voice’. In 2019 she was in the ‘Construction News 15 People to Watch’ list. Also joining the CPA team is Stu McInroy who has been appointed the new CPA Chief Executive, replacing outgoing Chief Executive Kevin Minton, who announced his retirement in August 2022. Stu and Kevin are working alongside for a period of time to allow a smooth handover.

In his new role as Chief Executive of the CPA, Stu will report to the CPA’s governing Council and work alongside CPA President Brian Jones and the Chairman Steven Mulholland to shape and ensure the continuing success of the CPA. Stu joins the CPA from the Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA), where he was Chief Executive since 2018.

In addition, the CPA is instrumental in the running of the Plant Sector Representative Organisation (PSRO) which, in conjunction with the Supply Chain Sustainability School, has devised an Eco-operating Training Delivery Framework.

The framework provides an overarching criteria for eco-operator-based courses in order to create consistency across all courses being developed to assist with emission-lowering and fuel-saving strategies. More information about the framework can be found at www.psro.org.uk.

New Era Fuels to Fuel Plantworx Exhibition with Sustainable HVO Fuel: A New Era for Clean Energy

New Era, a renowned supplier of fuel, oils, and lubricants, will be exhibiting at the forthcoming Plantworx construction equipment event (13th-15th June East of England Arena Peterborough). The company is not just participating as an exhibitor but will also be the primary HVO fuel supplier for the entire event.

Revealed: The Shortlist for the Prestigious Plantworx Innovation Awards 2023

The shortlist has been announced for the prestigious Plantworx Innovation Awards, which will be presented on the eve of the show itself. This year there are seven categories covering every aspect of the plant and equipment sector and recognising innovation in all its forms:

● Environmental Initiative

● Safety

● Best Use Of Technology – Including Digital Innovation

● Security Initiative

● Engineering & Design

● Training & Skills Development Programme

The entries in this year’s awards demonstrate that the industry is genuinely focused on reducing carbon emissions and minimising environmental impacts, as well as on the safety of people working with and around construction equipment. In many instances the entries also confirm that the plant sector is more than capable of delivering solutions to these issues, and the onus is now on construction industry clients to adopt them more widely.

Despite a tough four years since the last Plantworx Innovation Awards, the entries demonstrate that our sector has continued to invest in innovation that will help construction to be more efficient, safer and environmentally responsible.

The judges were keen to reward organisations that are using their innovative skills to find answers to everyday industry issues. This is evident in the category for NON-OPERATED PLANT & SUPPORT PRODUCTS, where the shortlisted entries will all make a significant difference for people working on and supporting construction sites.

Elite GSS’s Hi-Vis Ballast Block is a simple solution that can be replicated on every site to make the erection of fencing safer for construction workers and pedestrians, as well as being made from 100% lightweight recycled materials and being 100% recyclable.

Welfare units are another essential aspect of construction sites, and Genquip-Groundhog’s i550 unit can be almost entirely powered by its own solar panels, reducing fuel consumption by 90%.

Hydrotechnik’s shortlisted entry, the Minimess® Monster pressure test kit , is designed to make life easier for service engineers whose role includes testing the hydraulic pressures of machines of all sizes and from many different manufacturers.

The industry’s focus on carbon reduction was highlighted by the high number of entries in the ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE category and the emphasis on electric and battery-operated plant and equipment. Atlas Copco and Lifos were both shortlisted for battery storage systems that provide sites with a green energy supply, while Boss Cabins has been recognised for its Deep Green generator-free welfare unit.

Two electric-powered machines also made the shortlist: Sany Heavy Machinery’s SY19E electric mini excavator and Ekin Engineering’s Conscreed E1800 electric laser-guided screed, entered by Concrete Services & Supplies. The Sany machine is powered by cobalt-free batteries, which addresses one of the major concerns about battery manufacture.

The final shortlisted entry in this category is the Cone Crusher Bucket from Auger Torque – a machine attachment that makes it possible to crush and recycle rubble on even the smallest sites.

Focusing on environmental issues has not detracted from the industry’s constant aim to improve safety on site. In the SAFETY category, Bomag made the shortlist with two products, the Asphalt Pro machine control system, which automates much of the paving process, and a new cab design for pivot-steered tandem rollers designed to address long-term health issues for operators.

Xwatch’s Simple Safe Two Series Roll Over Monitor is also intended to protect operators, this time by giving dumper operators an early warning of a potential pitch and roll over situation.

The other two entries that made the shortlist in this category, Onwave’s OWL active geo-fencing solution and Spillard Safety Systems’ AI Human Detection System, tackle the important issue of preventing accidents caused by people coming into contact with construction plant. Both make good use of the latest digital technologies alongside an understanding of human behaviour.

However, in the category for the BEST USE OF TECHNOLOGY –INCLUDING DIGITAL INNOVATION , the judges felt that many of the entries were either developments of existing products or were not genuinely innovative. They did shortlist four entries: Bomag’s Asphalt Pro machine control system, the MachineMax fleet management platform and both Filtertechnik and MP Filtri for systems that monitor and analyse oil cleanliness.

In the SECURITY INITIATIVE category, the shortlist includes two systems for keeping track of plant and equipment: ABAX’s Smart Inventory Solution and Datatag’s Kist web-based administration portal. Both systems highlight the struggles the industry still faces with theft.

The other entry on the shortlist, Digger Guard’s Vandal Guard cab protection system, addresses the issue of vandalism head-on with a panel system that wraps the cab securely when not in use.

The ENGINEERING & DESIGN category always attracts a large field of entries, and this year was no exception, with the shortlist demonstrating a high level of innovation in different fields. The importance of reducing site carbon emissions is reflected in the fact that two of the shortlisted entries are electric machines: Manitou’s MRTe rotating telescopic handler range and Sany’s SY19E mini excavator

Two of the other entries on the shortlist – Digga’s HALO earth drill alignment system and the Rotar fully integrated quickcoupler adapter,

entered by Worsley Plant – are aimed at making the construction process more efficient, whilst the third, Mecalac’s Revotruck , could make huge strides in overcoming some of the safety issues associated with site dumpers.

The final category is TRAINING & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT, in which the two shortlisted entries highlight the important work being done across the industry to attract, recruit and retain a highly skilled workforce to the construction equipment sector.

Flannery Plant Hire has partnered with Balfour Beatty to create an Operator Skills Hub that offers innovative training programmes to inspire young people into the industry and upskill current plant operators. Meanwhile, Leica Geosystems has invested heavily to expand its Leica School to give the industry access to its latest technology and support in real-world conditions.

In addition to the main categories, three entries have also been shortlisted for SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS, reflecting their contributions to the industry and its wider activities. They are: Plant & Hire Aid Alliance for its crusade to provide crucial aid to war-torn Ukraine; British Steel for Laser Detection of Surface Defects; and Xerotech for the Hibernium Battery Pack.

The winners in all categories will be announced at a ceremony and dinner on the evening of Monday 12th June 2023 at the home of Plantworx - the East of England Arena & Events Centre, Peterborough. Hosting the awards will be Shaun Wallace – The Dark Destroyer from the hit TV quiz show The Chase.

Mongolian delegates visit Plantworx - Boosting International Presence and Collaboration

Plantworx continues to grow its international footprint with each new edition.

This year, Plantworx 2023 is set to welcome a sizeable delegation of construction and mining equipment buyers from Mongolia, spearheaded by the British Embassy in Ulaanbaatar.

In a collaborative effort with the Department for Business and Trade, the Plantworx team is orchestrating 'Meet the Buyer' speed dating sessions. These events aim to facilitate direct interaction between UK manufacturers and Mongolian delegates at the C-Suite level, allowing a free exchange of ideas and potential business prospects.

Joanna Oliver MBE, the External Affairs lead for Plantworx, expressed her excitement about the prospect of hosting an international delegation at her homegrown exhibition. Having spent nearly three decades promoting UK manufacturers and their products around the world, she views Plantworx as a fantastic platform for international buyers to experience the best of UK construction equipment first-hand. The Plantworx event organisers, faced a major setback when a welfare cabin hire company left their key build-up staff without proper on-site accommodation for the highly anticipated 5th Plantworx Construction Event. UK Construction equipment sales made a strong start to 2023

The CEA’s Market Analyst, Paul Lyons, provides his insight into what is happening in and around the construction equipment market…

Retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment showed further strong growth in the first quarter of 2023 and ended up at 9% above Q1 2022 levels, reaching 9,500 units, as shown in the chart below. Sales in 2022 ended up at 3% above the previous year’s levels and registered record high levels since the financial crash in 2008. Against this background, the market is still experiencing exceptional levels of activity in the early months of the year. Sales statistics are taken from the construction equipment data exchange run by Systematics International.

High levels of sales were anticipated in the early months of 2023 in previous reports as the market is still catching up from the supply chain constraints experienced in the first half of 2022. While the situation has been improving for some time, delivery of some equipment is still on long lead times from orders placed last year as the “catch up” continues. However, it is expected that sales will slow down in the coming months when the catch up is complete and the impact of weaker levels of construction activity is experienced.

The pattern of sales for the major equipment types provided a mix of performances in the first quarter of 2023. Crawler excavators and wheeled loaders showed the strongest growth, at 15% above Q1 2022 levels. In contrast, Mini/Midi excavators (up to 10 tonnes), the most popular product in the UK market, showed growth of only 4.5% in Q1, at only half of the average growth of 9% across all products in the first quarter.

In their most recent forecast published in April, Off-Highway Research are anticipating that sales of construction equipment will show a modest fall of 4% this year in the UK as the impact of high inflation and reduced activity in the construction market is experienced. It is anticipated that this will be followed by a further 2% decline in sales

in 2024. So overall, a mild downturn is anticipated for equipment sales following a strong post Covid recovery.

The Construction Products Association (CPA) have published their Spring forecast for the UK construction market. This has downgraded their forecast for construction output in 2023 to a fall of 6.4%, compared with a decline of 4.7% in their previous forecast in January. Further details are highlighted below.

Construction equipment sales in the Republic of Ireland are also recorded in the construction equipment data exchange. This also showed a strong first quarter, with sales at 11% above Q1 2022 levels. This was a welcome return to growth, after sales in 2022 showed an 8% decline on 2021 levels.

Construction output slowing down and forecast to decline in 2023

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that growth in construction output was slowing down in 2022 and flattened out in the first quarter of 2023, with only 0.7% growth compared with Q4 2022. Growth in output in 2022 was 6.2% following the post covid recovery of just under 13% growth in the previous year. Statistics on new orders for construction indicate a declining trend. Total orders in 2022 were relatively flat at 1.4% above the previous year. However, this included a decline of 3.2% in the last quarter and has been followed by a 12.4% fall in Q1 2023, compared with the previous quarter.

The UK construction Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) published by IHS Markit is a good indicator of current activity levels within the UK construction industry. The April report is shown in the chart below and indicates that the index has remained positive for the last three months, just above the 50.0 “no change” level. The survey highlights a very mixed picture for the three main sectors within the industry. Housing saw the biggest decline in activity since May 2020, while rising volumes of Commercial and Civil Engineering work kept the index positive overall. Encouraging feedback in the April survey included improving availability of materials and fewer instances of transport delays. Also, input price pressures eased with the rate of cost inflation at the lowest for almost two-and-a-half years.

The Construction Products Association (CPA) published their Spring forecast for the UK construction market in May. This anticipates a 6.4%

fall in construction output in 2023, steeper than the previous forecast in January when a 4.7% fall in output was expected. The latest forecast identifies private housebuilding and repair and maintenance as the drivers of the decline. These are the two biggest construction sectors and are impacted significantly by declining household incomes and high interest rates. The third biggest sector, Infrastructure, is still forecast to show growth in 2023, but at lower levels than previously expected due to the Government delaying work on the HS2 project and some major road schemes. The forecast for 2024 is for construction output to stabilise and show modest growth of 1.1% compared with 2023. https://www.constructionproducts.org.uk

The European Commission unveils its road circulation regulation proposal

The CEA’s Senior Technical Consultant, Dale Camsell, kicks off his report with news of the progress of the road circulation regulation – an initiative pressed for by industry bodies over the last two decades.

Whilst most of the EU regulations that machine manufacturers need to comply with are harmonised across the EU Single Market, the rules governing the requirements for allowing mobile machinery to circulate on public roads vary from country to country. This lack of a common set of requirements for road circulation causes complexity issues for OEMs – as the build specification for roadable machines will depend on which country they are sold into. It also causes a logistical challenge for machine owners seeking to operate across country borders, as they may fall foul of differing national legislation that effectively prohibits machines from operating cross border.

Industry has long campaigned for a unified set of requirements to apply right across the single market. In more recent times, mobile machine manufacturers have worked collaboratively to create a draft proposal that the European Commission could use as the basis for developing the necessary legislation. The multi-sector joint group of manufacturers submitted its proposal some four years ago. Since then, the European Commission has been working with stakeholders and member states to develop its legislative proposal. Through the

Committee for European Construction Equipment (CECE), members of the CEA’s General Technical Committee (GTC) played a full role in developing the original industry proposal.

On 30th March 2023, a welcome milestone was reached when the European Commission published its proposal for the regulation. As expected, it is based on a type approval approach and, whilst being similar in many ways to the tractor type approval regulation, it offers a so-called simplified type approval process. This means that for aspects of the machine that are more critical for road safety, the conformity assessment of the machine will require the involvement of a third-party, independent authorised body. For aspects of the machine that are less critical for road safety, the conformity assessment will be based on reports or self-certification by the manufacturer.

For general safety aspects that relate mainly to the functional operation of the machine, regulators will rely on existing safety regulations (such as the Machinery Directive) to lay down the safety requirements. Only those safety aspects of the machine that the regulators deem to have criticality in relation to road circulation will

require third-party involvement. However, details of the technical requirements and their criticality status are not yet included in the draft regulation by the Commission. These will follow at a later stage in the form of delegated regulations. The Commission’s plan is for the delegated regulations to be developed in the two years or so following the entry into force of the necessary framework regulation.

There are several items of high relevance for OEMs in the framework regulation. These include the fact that the scope is limited only to self-propelled equipment, hence towed equipment is not included in the scope despite industry’s requests. For example, manufacturers of towed equipment, such as crushers or screeners, will therefore have to continue to rely on current arrangements. The Commission’s proposal also limits its scope to machinery that has a maximum design speed of 40 kph. Machinery that is capable of exceeding this threshold will not be able to use this legislation to gain an EU type approval and must also rely on existing national schemes. The final notable exclusion is machinery that is classified as “small series”, which comprises quantities not exceeding 50 units per machine type put on the market per year and per member state.

The next steps in the development of the regulation will be stakeholder consultations - both public and targeted. CECE is currently preparing its consultation response, centring on seeking more legal certainty where elements of the proposal seem vague and open to interpretation. CECE will also contribute to the targeted consultation, where the European Commission’s consultant will probe deeper into how construction equipment manufacturers view the proposal, and hear any counter-proposals.

In the coming months we will get a clearer idea of the timing for the framework regulation. Important too will be determining the scope of the requirements and timing of the delegated regulations. CEA members will be kept abreast of developments and their implications through our highly active GTC.

Finally, CEA members can rest assured that CEA is well positioned in advocacy actions related to the road circulation regulation. Alessandro Rossi (Caterpillar) chairs the CECE project team that is dealing with this matter, so CEA is at the heart of representing construction equipment manufacturers to the European Commission in this vital matter.

And other items on the EU regulatory agenda....

There are a number of EU regulatory developments that could have a significant impact on construction equipment manufacturers. These include aspects of the new EU Machinery Regulation, which will replace the current EU Machinery Directive, the Artificial Intelligence Regulation, which is an accompanying piece of legislation that compliments the Machinery Regulation, the Cyber Resilience Act, which complements the Machinery Regulation, and the Data Act, which deals with responsibilities and obligations of the holders of data. Detailed updates of the consequences that these regulations will have on our industry are now a key part of the CEA’s GTC agenda – and will be reported in future issues of Construction Worx.

UKCA marking requirements and deadline extensions

CE Marked products were to be phased out of the GB market by the end of 2021, to be superseded by the UKCA mark. The latest deadline extension means that CE marked products can now be sold right through to 31st December 2024. Dale Camsell reports on a series of government roundtables to help evolve a workable, business friendly, future for the UKCA mark.

Now that stakeholders have had the opportunity to understand and gain experience of the implications of UKCA marking requirements, the UK government has held a series of roundtable events, during which it sought to obtain views from a wide range of sectors, including manufacturers. The aim is to help understand how the government can make the UK’s approach to product marking as easy as possible for industry, whilst ensuring the continued protection of machinery users.

The structure and content of these roundtable sessions was quite different from the usual style of such events. Typically, the organiser will have a proposal and uses the roundtables to seek stakeholder views. However, on this occasion, the Department of Business and Trade (DBT), formerly the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), simply asked attendees what thoughts they had on the introduction of the UKCA regime and how they thought future legislation should be structured so that it imposes minimal burdens on stakeholders whilst maximising the post-Brexit opportunities.

Whilst engagement with the DBT was welcomed, attendees stated that they were, on the whole, not experiencing any post-Brexit benefits. Questions included what are the most significant opportunities or issues sectors have faced with the current UKCA marking and testing requirements, what opportunities or issues sectors will likely face with certifying and placing goods on the GB market once UKCA is mandated, what the main objectives of the UK’s regulatory regime should be, and to what extent is divergence between EU and UK product marking rules an opportunity or a concern. With regard to this final question, participants were generally of the opinion that continued alignment between the technical requirements of EU and UK product regulations should be maintained, thus allowing machines of the same build specification to be placed on either the EU or GB market. However, one stakeholder group, approved bodies, are extremely concerned that if UK continues to accept UKCA marking on the basis of conformity

assessments performed by EU notified bodies, then they will likely go out of business since this is not a reciprocal arrangement and is consequently placing UK approved bodies in a very uncompetitive position. This is because an EU notified body’s certificate will be accepted across the entire EU market as well as the GB market, whereas a conformity assessment performed by a UK approved body will only be accepted in UK. Hence it does not make sense for customers to use UK approved bodies due to the limited market it serves. UK approved bodies will only therefore endorse continued EU/UK alignment provided that a mutual recognition agreement (MRA) is established between the two regions.

As mentioned, DBT were not trying to convey a message or position; they simply wanted to hear about what stakeholders were looking for in future UKCA marking regulations. To this end they posed further questions, including what further support would industry like to see from government, and is the current guidance sufficient and, if not, how could it be improved. DBT aims to provide feedback on the findings and conclusions of the roundtables later in the year, probably during Q3.

It was good that DBT took the time and effort to run several days of these Q&A sessions across the country. As previously reported, the CEA already has, through the Equipment and Machinery Industry Forum, a well-established liaison with the DBT staff that are responsible for implementing specific UK regulations such as machine safety and outdoor noise. We don’t, however, have the same degree of engagement with the UKCA policy team. I therefore took the opportunity to engage with them suggesting they visit Plantworx and offering a guided tour of exhibits. This will provide the UKCA policy team with an understanding of the equipment and compliance challenges that our sector faces and should be a mutually beneficial exercise. I'm pleased to report that they are keen to attend and arrangements are in hand. Now all we need is some lovely sunshine…
