DIRECTOR’S NOTE “When I grow up…..” When I was little, I thought I wanted to be a hairdresser. I loved watching my mom as she sat in the chair at the hair salon, and I would braid my dolls’ hair any chance I got. When my daughter was little, and had very long hair, she often went to school with elaborate buns on the top of her head. Obviously, my life’s path took me somewhere a little different, but I can still often be found helping with the hair on our shows.

The idea of dreaming about what is possible is essential to this show. Matilda has to overcome so many obstacles - too many for a girl her age. Wise beyond her years, she finds solace in the story she imagines, company in her newfound friends and an ally in her teacher. Roald Dahl makes some of the adults in the story antagonists who want to squash and subvert the creativity of the children. Matilda doesn’t shy away from the unpleasant moments in life. What it does do is embolden us to find our passion and make it into our super power. Matilda challenges us to question some of the rules and to continue to consider what we might be when we “grow up.” Perhaps we can remain just on the cusp of “adulthood” so long as we dare to explore the creative possibilities that continue to be presented to us. The cast and crew have explored a multitude of creative possibilities and have worked incredibly hard to create this piece of theatrical magic just for you. Unlike the script, the “big kids” got along well with the “little kids”, and the not-so-nice adults were nice after all. Hopefully, all of the cast and crew have realized that (as Matilda so eloquently puts it) “even if you’re little, you can do a lot.” I sincerely hope that this production serves to honour the legacy of 50 years of CDS productions. From performances in the old Junior School gym and Senior School foyer, to original productions in this very theatre, may the history and magic of all those who stepped on the stage or worked behind the scenes, continue to fuel those who think they might want to be a part of a production “when they grow up.” Enjoy the show!
