Message from the Chair of the Board
Community Support Leads to Growth
The 2015/16 academic year heralded substantial advancements for our beloved school. Thanks to the incredible support of our community, CDS students began the school year with the thrill of having lunch in the new Niczowski, Temovsky, Arrigo Dining Hall. In January, students moved into their new Senior School – truly an inspirational space. Just recently, we opened The von Schilling Family Fitness Area – a marvelous addition, which repurposed valuable space that was originally slotted for demolition and, instead, was refurbished at a very reasonable cost. All of this was facilitated with the closeout of the Making Connections campaign, which raised over $10 million in support of these projects – the largest ever capital raise at CDS! I thank the CDS community for stepping up to this significant achievement – one which will have an impact on the school environment for decades to come. Beyond the physical, we developed, implemented and began the communication program for our latest five-year strategic plan. We improved our governance standards with the implementation of an updated set of bylaws and a number of Board policies. We strengthened our Foundation investments

and initiated the process for a new Master Campus Plan. Through all of these major initiatives, we diligently executed our stewardship, ensuring that the School maintained a solid financial footing. I extend a sincere thank you to our volunteer Directors, each of whom dedicates substantial hours of their personal time to advance the interest of this growing illustrious institution. I know that a number of other Independent Schools have admired what has transpired here. CDS is fortunate to have such a dynamic group willing to lend both time and financial support to help make these visionary projects a reality for our students. I thank our departing Board members – Gus Arrigo, Jeremy Burge, Anthony Di Battista, Julien Di Ciano ’97, Leslie Ewing, Brent King and Michelle Weiss – for their dedication and support. I also welcome our new Board members: Karen Adams, Domenic Borrelli, Charlene Hayes, Ben Scholten and Adela Whitmell. Thank you to our Head of School, Mr. John Liggett, and his staff for their substantial efforts, dedication and support in advancing the interests of the School and our students. I reflected recently that, as a parent of alumni, I never really noticed that the facilities could

use some improvement while my children passed through the Senior School. You could attribute this to inattention on my part, perhaps; however, I believe that the calibre of our teachers and support staff more than compensated for any deficiency in the physical plant. While our bricks and mortar provide infrastructure to our community, our highly admired school would be nothing more than buildings and fields without their passion – from tears to cheers. These are exciting times for CDS, and I am honoured to serve. Paul R. Jewer FCPA, FCA, ICD.D Alumni Parent ’11 & ’13 Chair, Board of Directors
Message from the Head of School
A Moment to Reflect sky. But it was the opportunities our new building presented our students that caught my attention.
I don’t have the sort of job that affords me much time for idleness or to take a moment to stand around and ponder. However, on occasion, I find myself having what can be best described as “a moment.” I had one of these moments earlier this year, standing in the new school. I mostly hang out on the first floor of our new Senior School, but I was seeking some information from a colleague on the second floor and had to wait a few minutes until they finished up with a student. A few seconds into my standing around – the “moment” descended upon me. There I stood on the second floor bridge over the Mantella Family Atrium: it was a beautiful afternoon, our windows affording a view onto our trademark big blue Country Day School
Out the front windows I could see a physical education class kicking the ball around on Hawksworth Field. To my left and right, students were studying comfortably in our college-campus-like hallways, sitting at chestheight work stations. More students were clustered in the D’Elia Inspiration Lookout having a grand old conversation about something or other on our ever-popular bean bag chairs. Across the way, our open-concept Scheinberg Family Library had a large number of students engaged in a number of different activities. Across the other side of the atrium was an equally large group of students making full use of the Burge Family Student Services Centre. Faculty were in and out of the new teacher’s lounge, a meeting was underway in the CDS Parent Association Meeting Room, and the Croxon Family Administrative Centre was a hive of activity. A new family was on their way into the new Admission Office to see if we had any spots left. And, through the back windows, I could see faculty and students exercising on our new cardio equipment in the newly fashioned von Schilling Family Fitness Area.
“It was the opportunities our new building presented our students that caught my attention.”
All of this, from one vantage point, in one moment in time. What a tremendous impact we have made on the student experience at CDS. And the transformation – even the transposition from the old school to the new – has been seamless. As Tony Young, one of our Senior School teachers commented, “It’s been an incredibly unremarkable, remarkable year.” I extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone in our CDS community for making this happen! John Liggett Head of School

Holiday Fair
Drama & Music Night Art Receptions and Décor
Every year our Parent Association and volunteers work diligently to make available a large selection of gently used, clean, good quality uniform items which have been donated back to CDS. Our volunteers host our sales four or five times a year. Donations are accepted year round and the expectation is that laundered clothes be delivered to the drop box at the Junior School entrance and rear of the PAC. Thank you to all who have contributed in the past, your generosity is appreciated by many of our families. Remember to reduce, reuse and recycle your clothing!
On November 25 and 26, 2015, the Parent Association transformed the Di Ciano Atrium and Performing Arts Centre (PAC) into a mini-version of Toronto’s One of a Kind gift show. Holiday Fair (formerly known as Designer Fair) is an annual one-stop retail showcase featuring unique holiday giftware, home décor items, designer fashion, original artwork, tasty treats and trendy trinkets. This festive event is open to both our internal and external community members.
Last year the Parent Association launched an initiative to celebrate our Visual Arts at CDS, by hosting a reception and gallery of student art prior to the Middle/Senior School Music Night in December. The evening was such a success, the Parent Association is hoping to expand this next year to include the Junior School Holiday Concert. In addition, the Parent Association enhanced the experience of our Drama productions by hosting pre-show refreshments and conceptualizing and decorating the Di Ciano Atrium to match the themes of each of the Junior, Middle and Senior productions.

Original CDS parents (l-r): Robert Sillcox (an original member of the Board of Directors), Edmond G. Eberts (CDS Co-founder and Board Chair from 1972-75), Gordon Wilson Sr. (first Chairman of the Finance Committee), and Peter Peachey (Board Chair from 1986-88) reunited at the Grand Opening Celebration of the rejuvenated Senior School on January 26, 2016. Mr. Sillcox, Mr. Eberts and Mr. Wilson were the only three to incorporate and sign on to establish the Foundation, which pre-dates the School back to 1971.
“
We would all agree that each of us at the time knew next to nothing about the rules on how to play the game of education! But back in the early 1970s those of us daring to challenge the status quo gave chase to almost every new ‘good’ idea. To think that one day CDS would ever become the success it has, its potential unrestricted, is astounding to we three and our friends of those days, and, in fact far beyond anyone else’s scope dating back to its very beginning! Allow us to congratulate and thank everyone who has played a role in The Country Day School becoming an all-star player!” Edmond G. Eberts, CDS Co-Founder

Finding Joy in Giving Back Eberts Scholars exhibit gratitude and history of achievement
founding and exhibits genuine pleasure at witnessing the promise exhibited by each student. After breakfast, the students share something extraordinary about their CDS experience for the benefit of all in attendance. Skye’s advice was captured in one of the five Portrait of a Grad vignettes done this summer. She emphasized the importance of getting involved. “The best way to get to know yourself and others is through all of the different opportunities available at CDS.” Watch her video here: www.cds.on.ca/portraitofagrad
This year’s Eberts Scholars are (l-r) Glenn Brisbois ’18, Allyson Whitmell ’19 and Arianna Jones ’20
Four years ago, CDS Co-founder Edmond G. Eberts established the Eberts Entrance Scholarship, a renewable fund that ensures a qualified Grade 9 or 10 student can attend CDS for their high school career. Mr. Eberts’ motivation was personal as he attributes his lifelong success, including the founding of The Country Day School, to a bursary he received while attending the Bishop’s College School in the 1950s. Today, he remains a loyal supporter and visits the School regularly. One event he rarely misses is Closing Day in June. Mr. Eberts gains immense pride as one of our special guests at both the Junior/Middle and Senior School

ceremonies, and often presents a special award at both. When the scholarship first launched in 2013, the original beneficiary and her family started a tradition of honouring and thanking Mr. Eberts at a breakfast the Friday following Closing Day. Skye Nip ’16, accompanied by her parents, Debra Wilson and Les Nip, and brother, Cole, have continued this tradition for the past three years by inviting the newest recipient to join them each year. The level of gratitude in the room at this end-of-year event is palpable. Mr. Eberts delights in sharing his story of the School’s
“Without Mr. Eberts’ kind heart and generosity, my CDS experience would not have been possible.”

The 2014 Eberts Award recipient, Glenn Brisbois ’18, is grateful for the smaller community CDS offers and attributes his successful adjustment to perseverance and embracing great moments. Since arriving two years ago, he has tried many new things and thanks Mr. Eberts for changing the direction of his life for the better: “I know many people who would do anything to be able to come to a school like this.” Allyson Whitmell ’19, the 2015 recipient, concurs: “Without Mr. Eberts’ kind heart and generosity, my CDS experience would not have been possible. I have met so many people here, both students and teachers, who are always there for me when I need extra-help or some encouragement. The teachers at CDS see every student as an individual person, with different needs and aspirations. They are the heart of this school.” Upon leaving the breakfast that morning, the newest recipient of Mr. Eberts’ generosity, incoming student Arianna Jones ’20, felt more inspired than ever about starting CDS in September. The Eberts Entrance Scholarship is a renewable $10,000 scholarship awarded annually to an incoming student entering Grade 9 or 10 who best exemplifies the CDS commitment to education with balance. CDS Endowment Report
Endowment 10-year Growth (All figures in ’000s) Endowment totals are the Fair Market Value ending balance at the fiscal year end June 30, 2016 7,000
An endowment is a fund that holds investments in perpetuity as a source of income. It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in the School forever. Families can support areas within the School by donating to an existing fund, many of which are named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and staff. Endowment funds provide meaningful support for the School and its community by diversifying the student population; adding a humanizing touch by extending support to families who have had their circumstances change mid-way through the educational experience; and helping to fund programs that would otherwise be unaffordable such as hosting visiting experts in academic, artistic and athletic disciplines.
Name
CDS currently has funds that support scholarships and bursaries, athletics, music, staff development and training, and beautification and green initiatives. The Country Day School also has a number of general funds and an anonymous fund that provide support for the School’s areas of highest priority and the Scholarship/ Bursary Program. Funds donated throughout the year toward a specific area of support and directed to the School’s Endowment are added to an existing fund that supports the same area. New named funds are eligible to be established with a minimum gift of $25,000, though the funds can be pledged over many years. Financial Reporting
Prudent Measures Strengthen our Financial Position
It’s no coincidence that, as the Board enjoyed the view from the second floor of the new Senior School during the Grand Opening in January, we were already trying to forecast what the future held for The Country Day School. The Board and the Finance Committee have been focused on developing the long-term strategy for the School, to which you have recently been introduced. We as a Finance Committee have worked hard to articulate a strategy which will allow the School to pursue operational goals while retaining a sustainable business model. We are excited by the results and look forward to implementing the plan in the coming year. The School completed the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016, with an operating surplus of approximately $200K. The School’s enrolment is very strong and operating expenses are carefully managed. Fund balances increased by $2.5 million to $34.6 million, including $28.4 million invested in property, plant and equipment, and $6.2 million in the Endowment Fund. Management is effectively utilizing operating funds to minimize the balance on our bank operating line and related interest.
Led by the hard work of the Advancement Committee, the Making Connections campaign received $1.8 million in donations this year. With the prudent measures taken by the Investment Committee, the Endowment Fund realized a net gain in investment income of $250K and paid out $140K toward scholarships and bursaries. Most importantly, management and the community closed the $20 million construction and financing of the rejuvenated Senior School and The Niczowski, Temovsky, Arrigo Dining Hall on time and on budget. The partnership represents a remarkable milestone in the history of CDS and, despite the additional burden on resources, the School and its financial position only grew stronger. I would like to thank the members of the Finance & Property Committee for contributing their considerable expertise and oversight so generously. Thanks to Paul Ghezzi, Glenn Henderson, Paul Jewer, Brent King and Jeremy Burge, the considerable financial material is thoroughly vetted and discussed. We are the beneficiaries of a management team led by John Liggett and Melanie Sheppard that are always well prepared and informed regarding all aspects of the School’s finances.
