Message from the Chair of the Board

“… volunteering allows me to show my appreciation for all that CDS has done to help instill an abundance of confidence and a good set of values to equip my children (and all our CDS children) for life. ”

As I write this note, my inaugural as Chair of the Board, I would like to thank my fellow Board members for allowing me this opportunity to serve CDS. It was Paul Duckett, our previous Head of School, who first invited me to join the Board in 2008. For me, it was an opportunity to give back to the School in recognition for what it had done for my children, and I proudly served for six years. After taking one year off, my predecessor and Board Chair at the time, Paul Jewer, asked me if I would like to serve again in 2015, and I happily agreed. I believe I speak on behalf of the entire CDS community when I say it was an absolute honour to work alongside Paul as he deftly navigated us through the largest campaign build in the history of the School, while always mindful of CDS’s financial stability. Thank you, Paul, for your tremendous years of service. I am pleased to report that CDS continued to be on solid ground throughout the 2017-2018 academic year. From the implementation of year two of our Strategic Plan and its four pillars, to the school leadership headed by John Liggett, the identification and implementation of our Risk Management Strategies, enrollment, community advancement and financial resources, CDS has never been stronger. I believe this is due to the extraordinary efforts of our Head of School, his faculty and staff, our parent and student population and our Board of Directors, all who believe that an education with balance provides a unique foundation for the long-term development of our students. Now in year two of three in my role as Chair, with three more years to follow on the Governance Committee, I am aiming for 13 years of dedicated service to CDS. This elicits the frequent question, “Why have you given so many years of service?”

2

My simple answer is that volunteering allows me to show my appreciation for all that CDS has done to help instill an abundance of confidence and a good set of values to equip my children (and all our CDS children) for life. I believe all of our Board members who serve with me feel the same way. We share a passion for CDS and want to offer our services toward advancing its best interests, not our own. CDS is fortunate to have such a vibrant group of volunteer Directors willing to lend their time and financial support to help our visionary projects become reality for our students. I would like to thank our departing Board members – Joanne Railton and Blaise Tomkay – for their years of service. I also welcome our new Board members: Spencer Lavis and Katie Shotbolt ’07. In closing, I would like to thank John Liggett and his staff for their ongoing dedication in supporting, knowing and inspiring our children. This, perhaps more than anything, resonates back to our founding families who took a risk in starting this special place. We all want our children to feel Supported, Known and Inspired. From that, everything else can evolve. We want our children to feel Balance and Innovation in their lives. And we believe that by Building and Engaging our Community, our school’s Financial Stability will happen organically from there. It all starts with Support, Know and Inspire as the core. Together, we can serve our children’s school and help it to reach new heights. You can have impressive facilities and expansive property – but we have the heart and the soul too. That’s the CDS difference. David Myers Alumni Parent ’08 & ’10 Chair, Board of Directors

Message from the Head of School

Every Gift Counts

“The fact that we operate as a charitable organization is perhaps one of the least understood aspects about our structure as an independent school.”

The Country Day School is a not-for-profit, charitable organization governed by an arm’s-length, independent Board of Directors. I often find myself citing these facts in my talks with various constituency groups around the School. The not-for-profit structure ensures that our fees fund programs rather than generate profit. Board oversight ensures that the longterm direction and interests of CDS are protected and advanced by a very capable group of volunteers. The fact that we operate as a charitable organization is perhaps one of the least understood aspects about our structure as an independent school. I would say that most people believe that the School goes about its work of educating young people through the benefit of tuition fees. It is true that, through careful and prudent financial planning and stewardship, CDS is able to fund 100% of operational expenses (like salaries, utilities, routine supplies, etc.) through tuition fees. However, few people realize that the vast majority of our capital assets (buildings, fields, property, special features like scoreboards, stands, etc.) have been funded in the past, present and, hopefully, the future, by generous donations to the School. Donations don’t just fund grand items – such as the Niczowski, Temovsky, Arrigo Dining Hall or the Paul C. Duckett Theatre. Gifts both small and large help to fund additions of all shapes and sizes.

Just look at how a few gifts, bundled together, can help make incredible things possible: • In two short years, gifts of $19.72 or more (that echo our founding year) from our alumni, past parents and grandparents have accumulated into an Alumni Legacy Fund of $26,000. By the time you read this, we hope that this year’s donations will come close to doubling this amount. • A $200 ticket to the annual CDS Auction contributed to the overall support demonstrated at Auction 2018 to raise more than $237,000 for the traffic light at our main entrance, a project that our entire community is looking forward to being completed very soon. Gifts can also be an effective way of supporting a specific area of the School. For example, among other donations, the School has received gifts to our robotics department in support of new equipment, to our music program toward the purchase of new Timpani drums, and to our libraries to acquire new books and materials. Philanthropy and giving have always been hallmarks of CDS. We gratefully acknowledge and try our best to recognize each person who chooses to demonstrate their generosity to CDS each year. Thank you for another wonderful year and for all of your support! It is crucial that we understand that the good work of the School is made possible in the long term by the participation of everyone at CDS. Every gift has an impact, every gift is treasured and, truly, every gift counts. John Liggett Head of School

New and Improved Spaces Around CDS

New Seats and Scoreboards are a Welcome Addition Two new scoreboards on Hawksworth and Centre Fields, along with new spectator seating beside Hawksworth Track and Field, were installed this past summer and fall just in time for CDS’s hosting of the CAIS Senior Girls’ Soccer Tournament. They were all the result of the generosity of our community, which helped raise almost $250,000 from Auction 2017, and now provide game time and scores to our many spectators who enjoy watching and celebrating our athletes. The project included custom designed spectator bleachers complete with seats with backrests, a ramp for limited mobility access, and a windscreen celebrating the Cyclones’ logo. The project, which took more than a year to complete, was faced with the complexity of engineering our seats and scoreboards to withstand the high winds that are common at CDS and underscore the reason our athletic teams are called the Cyclones!

20

Now complete, the spectator seats and scoreboards are welcome additions to our community and highlight the power, generosity and commitment of our parent and alumni donors to continually support the growth of CDS. Without the generosity of all of our Auction donors, these wonderful additions would not have been possible. Next, we are excited to see the Traffic Light installation, a project made possible through the generosity of all our donors to Auction 2018! These are your donor dollars at work. Thank you!

Financial Reporting

“We all know that The Country Day School has high standards for educational excellence.... This strong foundation allows us to focus on what’s truly important – the balanced education of our children.”

The 2017-2018 school year was my second year on the Finance Committee and the first year as Committee Chair. I am pleased to report to The Country Day School community that the School’s finances are well managed. We all know that The Country Day School has high standards for educational excellence. Those standards apply equally to the financial management of the School. Overseen by Head of School, John Liggett, and led by the Director of Finance, Melanie Sheppard, the finance team is capable, experienced and diligent. As a result, The Country Day School enjoys a stable financial position. Work has continued this year on monitoring, managing, and mitigating risks to which the School is inherently exposed. Significant progress has been made in the area of information technology risk management, a topic we all continue to hear about in the headlines across Canada and the world, particularly as cybersecurity becomes a focus in every part of society. Of course, we also continue to concentrate on the safety and security of our students as a top priority. With respect to the strategic goal of financial discipline and stability, the Finance Committee consistently monitors a variety of financial and liquidity ratios, all of which have remained satisfactory throughout the year. The School’s balance sheet and cash flow both remain healthy as of June 30, 2018. Overall fund balances are at $39.1 million, consisting of $28.0 million invested in capital assets, $1.2 million in the Capital Fund, $6.9 million in the Endowment Fund, and $3.0 million in the Operating Fund.

22

I would like to thank the members of the Finance Committee for their engaged service and their continued application of business and governance expertise to the benefit of the School. Thank you Domenic Borrelli, Paul Ghezzi, Glenn Henderson, David Myers and Melanie Ward. I would like to extend a special thank you to Melanie Ward for her capable and enthusiastic leadership of the Investment Committee. We can all be encouraged by CDS’s financial stability and strong risk management. This strong foundation allows us to focus on what’s truly important – the balanced education of our children. The Country Day School also has a number of general funds and an anonymous fund that provide support for the School’s areas of highest priority and the Scholarship/Bursary Program. Funds donated throughout the year toward a specific area of support and directed to the School’s Endowment are added to an existing fund that supports the same area. New named funds are eligible to be established with a minimum gift of $25,000, though the funds can be pledged over many years.

BY THE NUMBERS

$3,725

Endowment funds provide meaningful support for the School and its community by diversifying the student population; adding a humanizing touch by extending support to families who have had their circumstances change mid-way through the educational experience; and helping to fund programs that would otherwise be unaffordable, such as hosting visiting experts in academic, artistic and athletic disciplines.

CDS currently has funds that support scholarships and bursaries, athletics, music, staff development and training, and beautification and green initiatives.

$3,483

An endowment is a fund that holds investments in perpetuity as a source of income. It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in the School forever. Families can support areas within the School by donating to an existing fund, many of which are named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and staff.

expressions of Gratitude September 28, 2017 “I am writing you this letter to thank you for giving me the opportunity to attend a Breakout week trip. It is my first year as a student in the Senior School, and when I learned about Breakout week, I was interested in one trip in particular. But it was expensive and my parents had already spent a lot of money on my tuition. Then I was told that a spot had opened and the cost would be covered by a donor. I got very excited. I really wanted to go on this trip to meet new people and also enjoy the educational component. Thanks to you, I got to experience both. I don’t really know how else to show my appreciation for what you did, other than to say thank you. Thank you so much.”
