Message from the Chair of the Board “The School received a glowing report and accolades for its impressive history of success and promising road ahead.”

THE 2016-17 ACADEMIC YEAR MARKED A RESUMPTION

of stability and the focus on pedagogical advancement, after a few years of significant build activity on our campus. The School looks fantastic, the quality of our teachers and our program continues to be appreciated as top tier, and our student population has grown. All of this was reflected in our CAIS Accreditation review this past year, where the School received a glowing report and accolades for its impressive history of success and promising road ahead. Thanks to Mr. Liggett and his leadership team for successfully shepherding CDS through this process. This marks the final time I have the opportunity to write you this letter, as my three-year term as Board Chair comes to an end at the October Annual General Meeting. I look back with great satisfaction at the progress we have made together. The opportunity to participate with the Board in the completion of the new Senior School and Niczowski, Temovsky, Arrigo Dining Hall, is an honour upon which I will always reflect fondly. Beyond the physical, we developed and implemented our latest five-year strategic plan. We improved our governance standards with the implementation of an updated set of bylaws and a number of Board policies. We strengthened our Foundation investments and initiated the process for a new Master Campus Plan. Through all of these major initiatives, we diligently executed our stewardship, ensuring that the School maintained a solid financial footing.

I extend a sincere thank you to our volunteer Directors, each of whom dedicates substantial hours of their personal time to advance the interest of this institution. I know that a number of other independent schools have admired what has transpired here. CDS is fortunate to have such a dynamic group willing to lend both time and financial support to help make visionary projects a reality for our students. I thank our departing Board members – Bruce Campbell, who Chaired the Finance & Property Committee for the past three years, and Dimitris Polygenis, our past Board Chair and former Chair of the Foundation and Governance Committees – for their dedication and support. Thank you to our Head of School, Mr. John Liggett, and his staff for their substantial efforts, dedication and support in advancing the interests of the School and our students. None of the positives that I hope you’ve experienced in your interaction with the School come as a result of happenstance or simple good luck. It all requires visionary leadership, attention to detail and execution. I believe it is the calibre of our teachers and support staff that is the single biggest contributor to delivering this superior education experience on a daily basis. While our bricks and mortar provide infrastructure to our community, our highly admired school would be nothing more than buildings and fields without their passion – from tears to cheers. These are exciting times for CDS, and I have been honoured to serve.

Message from the Head of School “We want to make sure that our graduates remain a key part of this connected and caring community. Maintaining close connections with our growing number of alumni will be crucial for the future development of our school.”

ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR I AM AFFORDED THE MOST

wonderful connection with the history and development of the School when one of our founders, Mr. Ed Eberts, drops by CDS for a visit. Through his stories, I am quickly transported back to the “good old days” – when you could leave King City at 8:20 and make your 9:00 meeting on Bay Street – and those times are in the A.M.!! Or back to the time when CDS consisted of the two-room Eversley Public School and the original, one-room 1883 Eversley Schoolhouse. As they were not physically connected, they had to put several sheets of plywood down in between the buildings so as not to track in the mud and snow when the weather turned! On his most recent visit last spring, Ed asked how many students were graduating, and when I told him 79, he commented that we must have amassed quite a large number of alumni. Indeed, he was right, and I went on to tell him that we had just passed the 1500 alumni mark, in addition to the 150 “Originals,” who are those students who graduated from Grade 8 prior to the addition of the Senior School in 1986. At 45 years old, it is as if CDS has entered its “middle years,” and that can be felt at recent alumni events where some of our older graduates have returned, including our first two 25th reunions! Many of our graduates are now into their middle years too, and

find themselves fondly reflecting on their own “good old days” here at CDS, as well as sharing with us how influential their time spent here was on their personal and career development. Our new long-range plan has identified alumni relations as a key area for us to explore and develop further in the coming years. We want to make sure that our graduates remain a key part of this connected and caring community. Maintaining close connections with our growing number of alumni will be crucial for the future development of our school. We would also like to ensure that as our alumni mature and start their own families, they consider sending their children to CDS. We understand that for many families, this isn’t possible without financial assistance, which is why we launched the Alumni Legacy Fund last November. It is our hope that in the coming years, this endowed fund will make it possible for more children of CDS Alumni to attend this wonderful school (read full story on page 15). Mr. Eberts turns 80 next spring. In his Closing Day remarks to the Class of 2017, he asked our newest alumni not to forget what their school has done for them, and suggested they come back often, as he has every year for the past 45 years, adding that he’s not done yet. Ed’s affinity will serve as our motivation to forge and maintain connections with all of our present and future alumni. I can’t wait for his next visit.

John Liggett Head of School

“When I first heard my name called for the Alan B. Jackson award [at Closing Day], I felt so grateful toward my peers for voting for me. I then saw my parents in the front row cheering for me. It was such an overwhelming experience. Afterwards, a few teachers came up to me and elaborated on Mr. Jackson’s legacy as a CDS teacher, and I felt so honoured to have won an award in his name and end my CDS career in that way.” ALI IWAI ’17

Introducing

The Alumni Legacy Fund Last November, we launched an Alumni Challenge with a simple goal – to achieve milestones in increments of 1972 toward a new bursary for children of CDS alumni. Throughout the month of November, historically known as ‘Giving Month’, we asked our alumni, primarily via social media (Facebook and Twitter), to donate their 1972, whether that be $19.72, $197.20 or $1,972. They could place the decimal wherever they wished and make it a one-time gift or a monthly gift. We finished the month with a record milestone for CDS Alumni – $5,400 including one gift of $1,972! The grand total raised was announced at the annual Alumni Holiday Party on December 20, and we have asked alumni to continue to build upon the success of the 2016 Alumni Challenge again this year. It will take years to build the Alumni Legacy Fund to the point that we can start awarding it to eligible applicants. However, we are extremely excited to dream about providing our first bursary to a deserving alumni child through this promising new endowment fund. It’s not too late to donate your 1972! Visit www.cds.on.ca/alumnilegacy to learn more.

Lead Donor to Alumni Legacy Fund Shares His Motive for Giving We recently had a chance to catch up with Mike Laceby ’98, a member of the CDS Board of Directors, about his contributions to the Alumni Legacy Fund and the meaning of legacy and importance of endowment. Here is what he had to say: “Obviously, the School is a big part of my life, and it is home for me in terms of my history and my high school years. CDS is a pretty special place. When I heard about the launch of the Alumni Legacy Fund and the option to place the decimal wherever I wanted – I thought it was absolutely brilliant. I felt that it would be a great kick start to the campaign if I gave generously, so I did. What immediately comes to mind when I hear the word ‘legacy’ is the continued growth of the School and the importance of CDS remaining true to its roots. While the School has experienced tremendous growth throughout its 45 years, it still generates that same warm feeling for returning alumni. This is largely attributable to everyone from the Leadership Team and staff to, most importantly, the faculty, who demonstrate the same level of care they’ve always shown to ensure it remains a special place. It’s important for a school to have a healthy endowment so that it continues to grow it over time. More and more alumni now have their own kids at CDS, another great example of legacy. They believe in the product. Hopefully, the Alumni Legacy Fund will help make this possible for even more children of alumni to experience CDS into the future.”

Introducing

The York Scholarship Bursary Thanks to an Anonymous Donor, CDS Introduces an Exciting New Scholarship Offering Through the generosity of an anonymous donor last year, CDS is offering up to three renewable scholarships to incoming students in Grade 9/10 for the 2018-2019 year. These bursaries will provide support for up to 65% of tuition and additional fees throughout each student’s high school career. The York Scholarship Bursary will be awarded to students based on financial need and a demonstrated balanced approach toward academics, the arts and athletics. Our donor recently shared with us the reasons as to why their family felt compelled to provide a scholarship for CDS. Q You have supported education at other institutions through scholarships in the past. Why did you think it was important to do something similar at CDS? A Our family feels fortunate to have found such a special community here at CDS. The words ‘education with balance’ ring true in everything we have experienced, and we have witnessed what it means to our son and our family. We recognize that many families don’t have the financial means to even consider exploring the possibility of sending their child(ren) to a place like this. It comes at a high price, prohibitive to many, and our hope is to help alleviate that cost for a few wonderful individuals. That we are in the position to open doors for a few families in the area so that their children can experience all the benefits of a CDS education would make us very happy. Q Why is financial aid important to your family? A We’ve seen the impact of scholarships and bursaries at other institutions. When executed properly, it can be a win-win for all involved. At 45 years young, CDS does not have a long history, and its endowment has a lot of potential to grow and benefit many other lives in the future. *Bursaries and financial aid are awarded anonymously.

The Country Day School

2017 Annual Report

We believe that one of the greatest gifts to a student is a good education. Look, someone can get a great education at a public school, but they most likely won’t experience all of the extras that a school like CDS has to offer. By that, I mean the critical mass of caring teachers, the outstanding facilities and the vast selection of extra-curricular activities. Our family really likes the idea of making this incredible opportunity more accessible to families who may not have considered it otherwise. By broadening the diversity of CDS, whether that be cultural or socio-economic, every student benefits.

The York Scholarship Bursary is named after the region we are in, and our hope is that it will attract three bright, engaged and dedicated students from any nearby region to join CDS. For more information, visit www.cds.on.ca/yorkscholarshipbursary.

Please help us spread the word!

Endowment Report

Endowment funds provide meaningful support for the School and its community by diversifying the student population; adding a humanizing touch by extending support to families who have had their circumstances change mid-way through the educational experience; and helping to fund programs that would otherwise be unaffordable such as hosting visiting experts in academic, artistic and athletic disciplines.

The Country Day School also has a number of general funds and an anonymous fund that provide support for the School’s areas of highest priority and the Scholarship/Bursary Program. Funds donated throughout the year toward a specific area of support and directed to the School’s Endowment are added to an existing fund that supports the same area. New named funds are eligible to be established with a minimum gift of $25,000, though the funds can be pledged over many years.

An endowment is a fund that holds investments in perpetuity as a source of income. It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in the School forever. Families can support areas within the School by donating to an existing fund, many of which are named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and staff.

New and Improved Spaces Around Campus

Seats and Scoreboards for Hawksworth & Centre Fields The 2017 Annual Auction proceeds will go toward enhancing our spirit and spectator experience for our outdoor athletic facilities. Blue and white scoreboards will soon be installed along the sidelines of both Hawksworth and Centre Fields, as well as more substantial bleachers for our parent, student and alumni fans. Additionally, proceeds supported the beautification of the Middle School play yard with Muskoka chairs, tables and landscape rocks, creating additional gathering places for our community to come together.

The Susan and Michael Burns Grad Lounge The Susan and Michael Burns Grad Lounge was made possible thanks to a donation from past parent and Board Chair, Demi Rogers in memory of longtime friend Susan Burns. The late Susan Burns was a past CDS parent, grandparent and loyal friend of The Country Day School. Susan’s husband, Michael Burns, is a founding parent, past Board Chair and current grandparent.

Other improvements completed during the summer include: • Addition of a portable classroom to service the Junior School Outdoor Education program. • Former ANB Soccer offices reverted back to CDS to serve as the new Middle/Senior Outdoor Education classroom. • The Middle School now has air conditioning for all classrooms. • The Middle School Science Lab has been renovated and updated. • New fascia installed below the eavestroughs and all roofs are scheduled to be redone by spring.

Financial Reporting “Our continued financial health allowed the renovation of some spaces in the original Senior School, including the new von Schilling Family Fitness Centre, new art studio, two new computer classrooms, and a new science classroom”

THE WORLD HAS EXPERIENCED A YEAR OF EXTREME

weather which has resulted in considerable destruction. Canada has not been isolated from this phenomenon, experiencing flooding, massive forest fires, and wind damage. Other headlines surround hacking and data theft, and so on. The Board is not oblivious to these headlines and, under the new long-term plan, focused on risk management in 2017. Management has assessed exposure to risk at the School and is in the process of developing plans to mitigate those risks. It is a big job, but there has already been a great amount of progress made toward the end goal. On the Finance Committee, we’ve been involved with the development of an enterprise risk management plan and, specifically, an information technology risk assessment and security plan. Within our goal of financial discipline and stability, we have viewed various test scenarios to ensure our finances remain stable under stressful conditions. I’d like to report that the School’s balance sheet as of June 30, 2017 is in a healthy state. Fund Balances increased by $2.0 million to $36.6 million, with $28.7 million in the Capital Fund, $6.7 million in the Endowment Fund, and $1.2 million in the Operating Fund. The School completed the fiscal year with a small operating deficit, before non-refundable enrolment fees and investment income, of $100k. This perfor26

2017 Annual Report

mance was buoyed by a strong enrolment of 745 students and the continued work of the Advancement Committee and community raising $1.2 million. Through the diligence of the Investment Committee, the Endowment Fund earned a net gain in investment income of $594K and paid out $147K, primarily toward scholarships and bursaries. We were pleased to be able to exercise the maximum prepayment on our fixed rate term loan of $340K. The Finance Committee also monitors the financial health of the organization through a number of internal and external benchmarks, and they are all well within established limits. Our continued financial health allowed the renovation of some spaces in the original Senior School, including the new von Schilling Family Fitness Centre, new art studio, two new computer classrooms, and a new science classroom. I would like to thank the members of the Finance Committee for continually guiding and challenging the agenda, always seeking best practices. Thanks to Karen Adams, Domenic Borrelli, Paul Ghezzi, Glen Henderson, Paul Jewer and Melanie Ward whose wealth of experience and knowledge contribute greatly to a solid financial footing. In my final term, after serving six years on the Board’s Finance Committee (three years as Chair), I have to specially thank and remark about the quality and quantity of great work produced by Melanie Sheppard and her finance team, under the direction of John Liggett. I would also be remiss if I do not mention the tremendous work of Judy Zrnec who has kept this all well organized and documented. The School is very fortunate.

CDS Remembers Gordon (Gord) James Lytle September 17, 1955 – April 10, 2017

The Gord Lytle Workshop was unveiled on October 20, 2017.

CDS sponsored a park bench in Aurora’s Machell Park in memory of Gord.

IN APRIL, WE MOURNED THE LOSS OF A GIANT IN THE CDS

community when our beloved Gord Lytle, Head of Maintenance, passed away after a short illness. Gord had been an anchor at CDS for 29 years, and the faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni will miss his smile and laugh, his ‘can do’ attitude, the jingle of his keys, and that recognizable whistle, for years to come. The hallways of CDS are not the same without him. In Gord’s memory, CDS donated a bench to the Town of Aurora to honour his lifetime of community involvement in the hometown he loved. Gord and his wife, Cathy, were frequent attendees at Summer Concerts in the Park and the Saturday Farmer’s Market. He was also a regular at Aurora’s Ribfest in Machell Park, adjacent to the Aurora Community Centre, where he played and watched many a hockey game. The bench is located at the north end of Machell Park, just off Orchard Heights. We also wanted to do something at CDS to honour our dear friend. Gord was a man of many talents of which woodworking was one. Not only could he build incredible 28

2017 Annual Report

shelving and cabinetry, but he was one of the main forces behind the creation of CDS’ many spectacular drama sets, not to mention a few Aurora Santa Clause Parade floats. For these reasons, it did not take long to decide on the naming of the Gord Lytle Workshop beside the Performing Arts Centre. On October 20, 2017, the School hosted a dedication of this Workshop with family and current and past colleagues of Gord. We felt it was a fitting location to ensure that his spirit lives on at CDS. “Gord, your talent for building and repair extended beyond bricks, mortar and lumber to human beings. You could raise spirits, mend hearts and renovate minds, sometimes with an artistry that left us completely unaware that we had been changed. You made us better people, literally and figuratively, in ways that challenge us to continue to do the same for others. You are a soul carpenter, Gord. Although we will miss you every day, we take comfort in knowing we can see your handiwork in and around the School for years to come.” — Scott Garbe, Head of Drama
