BANKS For the longest time, the singer, songwriter and producer Jillian Banks has felt like two people. As a kid growing up in southern California, she was the brooding, manic scribbler of lyrics in her bedroom, “stream of consciousness diary entries where my brain would trip out,” she remembers. Writing was this release valve for feeling “alone and isolated and unheard.” She’s the kind of artist who eschews social media addiction but has put her phone number on Facebook in case fans need to talk: optimistic and melancholic. In an era where feeling fractured resonates with so many, you could say her split personality has been part of what’s made her music connect: it’s the sound of so many splintered souls. As the artist (who goes professionally by BANKS) prepares to release her third LP, titled simply, III. Everything has gone from black and white - one extreme verses the other - to something more muted, something with more room for nuance.

ORE OGUNBIYI & C H E L S E A K WA K Y E As a minority in a predominantly white institution, taking up space is an act of resistance. And in higher education, feeling like you constantly have to justify your existence within institutions that weren’t made for you is an ongoing struggle for many people.

Chelsea Kwakye is a first-class honours History graduate from Homerton College, Cambridge. Whilst at Cambridge she was the only black girl in her year group of around 200 to read History. In her final year, she was Vice-President of the African-Caribbean Society and competed in a Cambridge vs. Oxford Varsity Athletics match. She is currently studying at the University of Law in preparation for a training contract with a city law firm in London.

Chelsea Kwakye and Ore Ogunbiyi, two recent Cambridge graduates, wrote Taking Up Space as a guide and a manifesto for change: tackling issues of access, unrepresentative curricula, discrimination in the classroom, the problems of activism and life before and after university. Featuring honest conversations with students past and present, Taking up Space goes beyond the buzzwords of diversity and inclusion and explores what those words truly mean for young black girls today.

Ore Ogunbiyi is a Nigerian-British Politics and International Relations graduate from Jesus College, Cambridge. Whilst at Cambridge she pioneered the Benin Bronze Repatriation campaign, the #BlackMenofCambridgeUniversity campaign and was President of the AfricanCaribbean Society. NEITHER HERE NOR THERE Neither Here Nor There is a panel which explores identity and belonging among the multiple and diverse generations of immigrants living in the United Kingdom and the West more generally today. Growing up, working and making their homes in cultural contexts different to those in their countries of origin, immigrants and their families can struggle to find a firm identity which unifies the different social influences in their lives. They often feel caught between two stools: Perceived as having become too Western when interacting with friends and family from their regions of origin, but still feeling like outsiders in their adopted countries of residence. There can be a sense of struggling to fully belong to either group; of being neither here nor there. The exciting panellists for this event will share their views about the rich and nuanced experiences of the millions of people in this position. Audience participation is encouraged; this is an event which seeks to spark a conversation in Cambridge about identity, culture and belonging. Absolutely everyone is welcome. WHISTLEBLOWING PANEL 70

We d n e s d a y , 2 7 t h N o v e m b e r The issue of whistleblowing highlights potential conflict between national security, privacy and intellectual property. In an age where whistleblowers are charged under the espionage act, how should such issues be approached? Are whistleblowers acting morally, and are they being treated fairly? Edward Snowden and Daniel Ellsberg will be speaking via video link for this panel

Open to all PANELISTS Ewen MacAskill Ewen MacAskill was a Guardian reporter for 22 years until retirement last year. He was the Guardian’s chief political correspondent, diplomatic editor, Washington bureau chief, New York-based general reporter and, finally, defence and intelligence correspondent. Daniel Ellsberg Daniel Ellsberg is a former United States military analyst who, while employed by the RAND Corporation, released the Pentagon Papers, a top-secret Pentagon study of U.S. Government decision-making in relation to the Vietnam War. This resulted in him being charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 along with other charges of theft and conspiracy - a judgment that was dismissed due to government misconduct and illegal evidencegathering. Edward Snowden Edward Snowden is a former intelligence officer who served the CIA, NSA, and DIA for nearly a decade as a subject matter expert on technology and cybersecurity. FAITH & FASHION 72

Tu e s d a y , 3 r d D e c e m b e r This image is a graphic design piece by an Instagram account titled badass.femme. ‘Faith and Fashion’ is a discussion on the intersection of the global fashion industry with modest clothing, important for multiple religions, especially Islam. In the climate of increasing islamophobia, the pressures on Muslim women to give up their hijabs and other forms of modest clothing for societal acceptance is a pertinent issue. What many fail to realise is that for many this is more than just about clothes, but about their identity, their connection to faith and the navigation of their place in western society. The speakers will use their experiences and their research to discuss the place of modest fashion in both, fast fashion and high fashion, and the changes in the industry which are allowing women of faith to also participate. The dialogue will also be examining this inclusivity with a critical outlook, trying to answer questions like whether Muslim women would even want to be represented in all aspects of the fashion industry.

7.00pm, Open to all PANELISTS TBC Mariah Idrissi Mariah Idrissi is the world’s first hijab wearing model to be signed to ‘Select’ models and feature in a global campaign for H&M late 2015. As well as a model she is an international public speaker promoting female empowerment and part of a growing movement bringing modest fashion to the masses regardless of faith or background. She aims to make modest models a norm in the media and the first step towards that is an agency which represents them. She also wants to ensure that the models are respected; their personal and religious beliefs don’t have to be compromised for them to pursue this career. 73

The Cambridge Union would like to thank Astra Zeneca as a Corporate Patron of the Union. We would also like to thank the following sponsors for this term: TPP Clifford Chance CanO Water Michael Page Revital

PRESIDENT’S THANKS I am lucky enough to be surrounded by an incredibly brilliant group of people –inside and outside the Union - that made the production of this term card possible, and I am endlessly grateful to all of them for their hard work and support.

Alycia – I don’t think either of us expected that we would work so well together, but I’m so incredibly glad that you were appointed to be VP in my term. Your energy, enthusiasm as well as your constant support and understanding have been a lifeline for me these past few months. Don’t ever forget what a brilliant VP you are. Alex and Achilleas - thank you both for the reinvigorated debates program, you’ve done an amazing job rejuvenating the most important thing the society does, and I’m sure it’ll pay off.

Firstly, my thanks go out to the Michaelmas 2019 team. Every term card that is produced by this place is the product of a group of incredibly dedicated people, and this one is no different. Oliver, Fin, and Sara – your efforts have kept the Union’s social media and membership drive running across the summer, and I’m so thankful for your ability to produce beautiful graphics and spreadsheets at a moment’s notice. Khadija - thank you for always being 100% on my wavelength, it’s kept me sane. You’re great and I know that even if you don’t continue at the Union you will kill it at Cambridge more generally. Angela - you’ve had an incredibly difficult and ill-defined job, alongside a monster internship, and managed to juggle it all – I’m grateful to you for your ever-present enthusiasm in doing this. Dhruv - thank you for planning a panel that is so personal and interesting - I can’t wait to attend myself! Sahil - when I found out that a complete union outsider was elected as treasurer, I had my apprehensions, but I wasn’t expecting him to be quite so unlucky! Stay safe next term, and try to show your face at the Union once or twice. Max – your dedication to elucidating my life with pop culture updates is as admirable as it is doomed to fail. Your touch has peppered this termcard with speakers that will appeal to our diverse membership and I’m thankful for that. Given you have survived my constant hounding, I’m sure this term will be a breeze for you comparatively. Dan - thank you for your dedication to the Union and your consistent willingness to lend a helping hand. I will always admire that about you, and I’m sure your ball will be a brilliant reflection of this hard-working attitude. Luke – thank you for your incredible work over the past few months (and your endurance of my mild psychological breakdowns). You have gone above and beyond what was expected of you as the Executive Officer, and I’m excited to see all the things you’ll accomplish, not just in the Union, but also in your life after university. Don’t forget about me when you’re prime minister.

Secondly, to all the (officers) I’ve (worked with) before. Page and Jonah – thank you for being so open to providing advice and help. Maria - my first President, you’ve been an inspiration to me and continue to be. Tom - a late addition to my life (and this thanks) but last is certainly not least. Thanks for your wise words and emotional intelligence, and for scooping me off the floor in that toilet at 4am. Please look after yourself, I’m honestly worried for you. Charles - your support has meant the world to me, and I’m so grateful for your kind words and constant messages over the summer. Will - given we started with “who’s Vince Cable?” I reckon our relationship has gone as well as it could from there. All jokes aside - I was not ready to be Executive when I was elected, and you showed me all the ropes - thanks for that. Abdullah - I can’t believe that such a mess is simultaneously someone I admire and have learnt from so much. You’ve been both a son and a role model for me. Emma – a brilliant friend and teacher in all things enthusiasm, vac scheme, and people skills - you’ve taught me so much and I cant wait to see you more this coming year for more #realisingthings. Haneen - your companionship has meant so much to me over the past two years (though you need to get better at responding to texts). You’re an incredible person and I will always admire your lack of fear of saying what’s on your mind. Eileen – I will miss you so much this coming year, but your spirit will live on in my elaborate spreadsheet and document-based planning of events (and of course a Paris trip to see you). Joy – from pestering you about women’s open to you pestering me for a place to stay because you booked your flights early I know our friendship will last, and I’m thankful for your (occasional) kindness and uplifting words.

PRESIDENT’S THANKS My HSPS Gals – Sophie and Viv - thank you for all the vegan brunch, the photo opps, the long voice notes, the SOC3 supervisions, and the consecutive mental breakdowns, I’m grateful for your presence and your warmth. I can’t wait for next summer with you. PIBGOCs - you will always be my home

Last, but certainly not least, Imran – I can’t express how grateful I am for your quiet support, your answering of my dumb questions, and your calming way of handling everything at once. You guided me through this place - I genuinely could not have done it without you.

and the place/people that made me who I am today. I miss you all but I know that having started with 7am breakfasts and Knole Park picnics and continued to Thailand, Nepal, Portugal, and god knows where next, I made friends for life in GIH. Brendan – we did it! Thank you for being quite literally the only person as unhinged as I am, it’s been great knowing I can text you at any hour and you’ll be having a crisis about the Union too. I’m sure your termcard will be amazing, and we should both be proud of all we’ve done. Gemsoc you’ve shaped so much of my misandrist views, and I am proud to call such strong women my friends. My presidential goes out to you guys and our bra-burning, man-hating ways. Jali - thank you for – amongst many things – putting up with more Union talk just when you thought you’d left. You’re an incredible human and an even more incredible boyfriend - I can’t wait to see all the things we’ll do together. A special shout out to my campaign team who are in amongst the above you guys put so much into something you ultimately did not need to care about and I will never be able to express to you how thankful I am for your brilliant strategy and for keeping me sane.. My parents - thank you for being so understanding of a very stressed daughter about 99% of the time, I would not be here today without your love, support and kindness.

Thirdly, to all the staff that keeps the building and the society going. Sam – you are a delightful man, and I’m glad I’m always able to walk into the bar to see myself sitting on the throne. Louise – you’ve witnessed some incredibly inept moments from me – thank you for your quiet competence in the face of these moments and in helping me stitch together the numerous messes I’ve made. Katherine – the patience and skill with which you’ve put together the fresher’s guide and term card makes me wonder why on earth we never did this before! It is due to you that this book looks anywhere as beautiful as it does. Sabine – your function sheets and calm but no-nonsense manner are second to none, I owe you for all the support inside and outside your job as corporate comm. Joe – your work for CUS and CUSEL on a day-to-day basis keep this place running (and are not to be forgotten), although your choice of music while doing these tasks is questionable to say the least. Bill - you are a gem, and the union would not be the same without you. Thank you for your patience, your kindness, your humour and - of course - your security expertise. Lastly, the trustees, and Lord Chris Smith in particular, thank you for all the hard work you do to keep this place going.

Lastly, to all those in my life outside the Union. My Peterhouse friends - I owe so much to so many of you. Nae, Phoebe, Talia, Guille, Tris, Matti, Freya, Morgan, Alex amongst many others – thank you for putting up with the ‘union stuff ’ I’m constantly at, the electoral drama, and more broadly, for going through the good and bad times of Cambridge with me. I hope you know how much I appreciate everything you’ve done and continue to do for me.

Lastly, thank you to you – the membership – for making the Union a place that I want to be part of and work for. I sincerely hope you enjoy the coming term.

Rachel Tustin President, Michaelmas 2019
