African adventure The sparks from the campfire ascended into the Tanzanian air as the Crosswell family gathered at the end of another day on a 2-week African safari. All 12 of the cousins, ages 11-21, huddled around, telling stories and laughing. The family

Lillie Robertson (pictured, at left, with artist Dawn Siebel) hosted a fundraising event at the Houston Zoo. Good energy along with portraits of some Houston Zoo animals brought zoo supporters together. Siebel paints endangered species, each with its own distinct personality. Zoo keepers visited with guests, and a screech owl and an enormous tortoise had everyone talking about the zoo experience. A portion of the proceeds will benefit conservation programs at the Houston Zoo. Seen in the crowd were Anne Duncan, Mary Cullen, Candy Elkins, Les and Marty Greenberg, Melissa Ellis, Alina and Bill Schrom and Janet and Mike Odom.
traveled from Mount Kilimanjaro to the border of Kenya. They saw village dancing, spear throwing with the Maasai, and animals and birds of the Serengeti, and they took a hot-air balloon over the land. Their four safari drivers felt like family. Tennis and teamwork The Lamar High School varsity tennis team, with new coach Alvaro Robledo, were all smiles at the district tournaments. Lamar played Bellaire High School, Westside High School, Chavez High School and Heights (formerly Reagan) High School and placed first, taking home gold medals. Raghda Henthorne and Vicki Fullerton (pictured, from left), along with more than 840 people, mingled at The Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation 15th annual luncheon at the Hilton Americas-Houston. The luncheon raised $205,000 for breast-cancer research and featured celebrity guest speaker Henry Winkler. Winkler delivered a heartwarming speech as he shared his own life struggles with dyslexia and how that made him the person he is today. Winkler’s wife, Stacey Weitzman, a two-time breast cancer survivor, was also at the event.
