Winners of this year's National Partnership, STM Group look back over the challenges and opportunities they have faced as a business in the last 18 months.

Everybody within STM Group (UK) Limited is both delighted and honoured to receive the National Partnership Award, for “Protecting the Public, Reducing Risk” project at the British Security Awards 2021.

Filled with COVID-19 uncertainty, the last 12 months has been a very challenging and demanding period. Being honoured with this award has provided a beacon of light at the end of the tunnel for STM Group. In particular, this award recognises the positive relationship between the wider Rail Network family and STM Group. STM deploys staff, across the Wessex Region, who are employed solely for the welfare and wellbeing of rail passengers, and others who frequent rail stations. It is a demanding and unique operation in which STM takes great pride.

Recognised as an expert in the demanding transport sector, STM Group provides bespoke service solutions. It specialises in the delivery of high-quality security, cleaning, and customer-focused, services, underpinned and supported by leading edge technology. Operating since 2005, a commitment to continuous service improvement has enabled us to focus on customers who demand the highest of standards, where innovation and service quality are a prerequisite for success. STM operates a ‘’One Team’ culture, where the organisation applies its “Support, Trust, Manage” philosophy in providing a positive working environment for its internal customers.

In one way or another, everyone has been affected by COVID-19.

The pressures on both business and individual, over the last 18 months, have been significant. Not only the pandemic, but also the restrictions imposed as a result, have demanded a different, more flexible, approach. Working remotely, and working from home, have become the norm for many. However, for most within STM, the fundamental principle of going to work, despite all the unknown risks, has continued. Often, the nature of the required work has changed (to more of a focus on COVID-19 related activity), but what has become very evident is the growing recognition of the value of the work undertaken by so many STM employees working within the Critical National infrastructure.

This award, specifically, highlights the success of STM Group’s Trespass & Welfare suicide prevention project, where staff have now successfully prevented well over 100 suicide attempts, as well as assisting many more vulnerable individuals. This has been achieved through ensuring the careful selection of staff with the right profile, combined with a focused training programme, covering over 30 high-profile railway stations. Designated Welfare Officers are trained to observe, assist, and support, any vulnerable or potentially suicidal person, ensuring that anything unusual is identified quickly, with timely engagement. The training regime also involves Samaritans Training and Physical Intervention, enabling the safe and professional discharge of responsibilities. Welfare Officers are also expected to proactively engage with the public, providing a high level of customer service and helpful travel advice.

"One of the few positives of COVID-19 has been the growing recognition of the critical work undertaken by the security industry, and the true value of many of our front-line operatives. "

The high standards continuously delivered by STM have been recognised through numerous awards, including ‘’Transport Supplier of the Year’’ at the London Transport Awards 2020, ‘’Security Project of the Year’’ at IFSEC 2020, and ‘’Outstanding Customer Service Initiative’’ at the OSPAs 2021. The highlight, however, was the award of the prestigious British Security Industry “Business of the Year 2020” , sponsored by BSIA.

The Company is thrilled to be adding ‘’National Partnership 2021’’ award to this list of achievements. Paul Jacomb, CEO of STM Group, commented “The transition I have seen has been little short of remarkable.

"By investing in our internal customers, whilst promoting best practice through our commitment to continuous service improvement, operational standards have gone from strength to strength.

"I salute those who have made this possible, by working together as ‘One Team’ , and am both thankful and grateful that organisational performance has been recognised through the award of yet another prestigious accolade.

"One of the few positives of COVID-19 has, undoubtedly, been the growing recognition of the critical work undertaken by the security industry, and the true value of many of our front-line operatives. BSIA members, like STM, who seek to promote a professional industry, now have the opportunity to highlight how important that industry is in the provision of a safe and secure environment for the public at large”
