PRESERVING OUR HISTORY – Brownsville Oldimers Day It’s important to preserve our history. As time moves forward, the lack of accurate written information, leads to myth and legend, rather than history. The current order of historical legacy being pieced together stretches from Jewish input and the Zionist movement, straight to the “Here and Now” time frame, as it pertains to the history of Brownsville, Brooklyn. To do so would be such an historical injustice to the people who strived to be better, do better and

NEW YORK STATE SENATOR

JESSE HAMILTON (D) 20TH SENATE DI ST RI CT

From the desk Of Senator Jesse Hamilton … If you live in a rent regulated apartment you have probably been closely following proposals in the State Legislature to extend and strengthen our rent laws, which expired on June 15. I delivered remarks on rent regulation laws (video link above) yesterday opposing the Senate Republican Majority’s version of rent regulation. Many constituents in my district are living the American Nightmare right now. The American Dream is being denied to many in the middle class who are now becoming the working poor. Many individuals in my district are paying more than 50% of their income to rent. My office has received calls from residents who are concerned that they could face large rent increases or be evicted from their homes if the rent regulations are not extended. Rest assured, that is not the case. Tenants under a current lease will retain their protections even if the laws expire. A landlord has no legal right to move you out. Even if your lease is up for renewal, you still have certain legal safeguards to protect you. If the laws should expire without being extended, landlords have been warned by State and City officials not to attempt to make any changes until new legislation protecting rent stabilization is passed. There have been reports of landlords telling tenants they are going to have to move when the rent laws expire. That is blatantly false, and tenants are being advised not to leave their apartments. If you are being harassed by your landlord, call 311, my office's 24 hour constituent services hotline at 347-770-5054 or click here. The city is working closely with Legal Aid and other organizations on this issue and is urging tenants to report any harassment immediately.

Why Your Bottled Water Contains Four Different Ingredients

What Are the Dangers of Calcium Chloride? Last Updated: Jun 12, 2015 | By A.L. Kennedy

Gastrointestinal Distress and Skin Reactions What Are the Dangers of POTASSIUM CHLORIDE ? o o o

potassium chloride is a chemical compound of potassium and chlorine, which is used as a fertilizer, and even as a fire extinguishing agent! salt: Dasani claims they add a negligible amount of sodium minerals added. Yes, that's unnecessary sodium in your bottled water! The label on Pepsi brand Aquafina water reads "Demineralized treated water, ozone." It's a fancy way of saying "tap water."

Bottled water in your car is a dangerous thing! Never leave bottled water in a car to overheat, because an overheated bottle will release dioxins into your water and dioxins are unhealthy to drink. The highly toxic compound of dioxins released into your water may cause cancer (it's been linked to breast cancer).

Distilled Water: Distilled Water has impurities removed through the process of distillation, which involves boiling water and condensing the steam into water. This leaves the contaminants behind. Distillation produces the most pure water. And unless you're in California, the manufacturer doesn't have to disclose its’ source of water.

FLOURIDE POISON Yes, you've been brainwashed by your dentist (and your local politicians) to think that fluoride is good for you!

Next time you reach for a bottle of water on store shelves, take a look at the ingredient list. You’re likely to find that it includes more than just water.

Popular bottled water brands that contain more than water Dasani, for example, lists magnesium sulfate, potassium chloride, and salt alongside purified water on its Nutrition Facts label.

SmartWater contains calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and potassium bicarbonate.

Nestle Pure Life’s list includes calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and magnesium sulfate. And these are just a few brands. Bottled water companies are purifying water, but then they’re adding extra ingredients back.

The truth is that Fluoride is .. 1. a drug (you are being medicated topically for your teeth by swallowing it) 2. toxic (a poisonous by product of the fertilizer industries) 3. dangerous (EPA admits Fluoride is dangerous) 4. a poison (has the same ingredients of insecticides and rat poisons) 5. a neurotoxin 6. causes dental Fluorosis 7. has a causal relationship with ADHD (attention deficit disorder) 8. is unnecessary (other nations don't fluoridate their water)

Dannon Fluoride To Go Water, marketed at children, is not on the Dannon Web site. It contains 23.0 mcg fluoride per serving. Learn why fluoride is not beneficial. See more at: http://www.happypreppers.com/Fluoridedangers.html#sthash.hRVC6hJe.dpuf

Brownsville Oldtimers Event

accomplished it. It would be a grave disservice to the youth who should take pride in knowing the many great organizations and events that were “Grass roots” created. It all started with the old-time softball players getting together to involved to strengthen community camaraderie. Originally known as the “Brownsville oldtimers Association” it was formed in the 1980’s and manifests itself as an all time great event. Once a year, Frank Adams, better known as “Frankie” and his Team “the Floogies,” would get together with other top teams, such as, The Woodsmen, the Bears, and the Allstars.

The fish fry and activities were sponsored by the community, for he community. There were many supporters, but some of the largest sponsors were previous district leader Decosta Headley and Akbar.

Many others began selling shirts as well, and vendors continued to be added at a fast pace. The Brownsville Old timers day had become borough wide sensation, and an event that people scheduled their vacations around.

As a footnote, the Brownsville Softball league never did play at the Brownsville Recreation Center, but it became the obvious choice to sponsor future events. With growing popularity and fellowship, it was quickly becoming a standing room only event and more space was needed.

The basketball games were always sold out and played by athletes such as Greg “jocko” Jackson, World B Free, Fly Williams ad Ronnie Blackmon.

Greg “Jocko” Jackson, having been a basketball athlete and a younger participant, picked up the torch and became the President of the Brownsville Old timers Association. At that point, the Brownsville Recreation Center became home to the yearly Old timers event.

Herbert Marcel was also one of the founding members and other notable participants were Bom Bom, Maurice, Ray Haskins and James Mack, just to name a few.

In search of the perfect location, the yearly game frequently moved from year to year. The games were held in Betsy Head Park, by then President, James Mack and in Gershwin Park as well as Kingston Park, with Ray Haskins as President.

The stage was so raggedy, that Jocko decided he needed to have a quality stage built and so he did what all should do. He reached out to the elected officials and let them know that if they wanted his support, then they had to provide for the community. With funding from outside sources, the Oldtimer’s day celebration became a two day affair. He also reached out to the Precinct Commanders and let them know that he didn’t want anyone being harassed. In the spirit of “jocko,” he always made sure to mention original Softball leaque association give the history of how the event came to be.

These teams would get together and invite friends, family and fun. The organization was based in Kingston Park, but the Oldtimers games were first held at the park on Stone Ave (now known as Mother Gaston) and Sutter Ave Park.

Performers such as the blue notes, blue magic and more, were brought to Brownsville by promoter Donnie Macmillan.

The first shirts were designed by Duane Kinnon who worked at Amboy Neighborhood Center, in memoriam to Akbar

Brownsville Oldtimers day, is a peaceful time filled with love, laughter and family. It is a testimony that a few determined people can work together to accomplish great things. They didn’t covet any glory. They didn’t just talk about it. They did it. They respected each other, shared the credit with each other and are an example of how a legacy gets started.

The Bville Collective – “Knowledge Is Power”

New Dollar Store Study Released New Report Finds 81% of Dollar Store Products Tested Contain One or More Hazardous Chemicals Linked to Learning Disabilities, Cancer & Other Serious Illnesses Organizations Call on Dollar Stores to Protect Communities of Color and Low-Income Families from Toxic Products “HealthyStuff,” in collaboration with the Campaign for Healthier Solutions, released a report today about toxic chemicals found in Dollar store products. The report -- A Day Late and a Dollar Short: Discount Retailers are Falling Behind on Safer Chemicals – includes testing results for 164 dollar store products such as toys, jewelry, school supplies and other household items, that found over 81% (133 of 164) contained at least one hazardous chemical above levels of concern. The campaign also sent a letter today to the CEO’s of the four largest Dollar store chains -- including Family Dollar …Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and 99 Cents Only – urging them to stop the sale of products with hazardous chemicals TO COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AND LOW-INCOME FAMILIES…Combined these discount chains have sales totaling over $36 billion and operate more stores nationally than Walmart. “People struggling to make ends meet are confined to shopping at the Dollar stores,” … and now we know we’re filling our homes and our bodies with chemicals released from Dollar store products. This needs to stop.” The chemicals of concern found in Dollar store products tested for this report include: phthalates, linked to birth defects, reduced fertility, cancer, learning disabilities, diabetes, and other health issues; polyvinyl chloride plastic (PVC or vinyl), which creates hazards throughout its life cycle and has been linked to asthma and lung effects; and toxic metals such as lead, which harms brain development, leading to learning disabilities, lower IQ, and cause other serious health impacts, especially in children. In addition, 40% of sales at Dollar stores go toward food products (not tested for this report) – much of which is highly processed with low nutritional quality, and whose packaging is another potential source of toxic chemicals including bisphenol-A (BPA), a synthetic hormone linked to breast and others cancers, reproductive problems, obesity, early puberty and heart disease. Fortunately, there is a growing movement by mainstream retail and manufacturing brands – including Target and Walmart – to respond to consumer demand for safer products with publicly-available corporate policies that identify, disclose, and replace priority toxic chemicals with safer alternatives... The Campaign for Healthier Solutions is asking for a comprehensive set of reforms, including that: Discount Retailers immediately remove children’s products found to contain regulated phthalates and lead from store shelves; and adopt comprehensive corporate chemical management policies to identify, disclose, and remove hazardous chemicals from their supply chains and from all products in their stores, beginning with their house brands. Local, State, and Federal Governments ensure that discount retailers comply with all relevant laws and regulations; and adopt public policies (such as Maine’s Kid-Safe Products Law and Washington’s Children’s Safe Products Act) that require manufacturers and retailers to disclose hazardous chemicals in products, research alternatives, and remove hazardous chemicals when alternatives are available, effective, and safer.

Families and Communities let Dollar store chains know that they want safer products, and join local and national efforts advocating for nontoxic products. Complete test results are available at HealthyStuff.org. The full report and more information about the Campaign are available at www.nontoxicdollarstores.org IMPORTANT NOTE: HealthyStuff.org ratings do not provide a measure of health risk or chemical exposure associated with any individual product, The Brownsville Collective Volume 3 - “Be blessed to be a blessing”
