JUNE 2020 EDITOR'S LETTER o, the world isn't ending, it's just the news.

N

Have you felt that the news is getting worse? That

the

world

is

spiralling

into

chaos?

Or

accelerating towards entropy? Because I certainly have.

I have a vision – to create the most inspiring, hopeful, authentic, inclusive, optimistic magazine on the planet. Clearly not an easy feat, however, after much hard work The Brightside is finally here. Launching a magazine and website has been, and will continue to be, an invigorating and exciting challenge, but I’m ready to face it head-on. We aim to bring awareness and build traction for the brighter

things

in

life,

without

detracting

from

the

importance of other news stories. The ocean of fake news and negative news is vast, so we can be oblivious to the current and positive stories emerging across the globe. The Brightside hopes to reassure humanity that there is some good left in the world and to thank small heroes and to inspire others to likewise do good. As the name suggests, the June issue only contains events in June 2020. This issue shares stories from around the world, covering ‘hot’ topics such as the scientific discoveries in combatting Covid-19 and the achievements of the protests for racial equality, as well as less mainstream stories such as the return of the Galapagos tortoises to their home island. In addition, we have articles in this issue which showcase the unique and inspiring stories of groups and individuals who are trying to make the world and their community a better place by carrying out simple, pure acts of kindness. I hope with every issue we can expose the world to positive, good and kind actions and consequently get inspired, find opportunities to better themselves and their communities. I believe that there is something for everyone in this issue and I hope you will take your feeling of optimism beyond the pages of our magazine and brighten someone else’s day.

Pride Parades During the Age of Social Distancing and Lockdown By Anastasia Toha June marks the global celebration of Pride and the LGBTQIA+ community. However, Covid-19 and social-distancing have put parades and parties to a temporary stop. Nonetheless, organisations refused to accept this unfortunate fact and turned to virtual pride celebrations instead.Â

6

The Brightside

01 - 30 June 2020

Pride parades are important for numerous reasons. For

example,

they

bring

comfort,

safety,

raise

awareness, break stereotypes and recognise the achievements of the Pride community and how far they’ve come. These fundamental values of Pride celebrations and parades are why Pride was not cancelled

this

year

despite

lockdown,

just

relocated. For some members of the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly

young

people,

the

lockdown

has

become especially difficult when their identity isn’t understood,

respected

or

accepted

by

those

they’re self-isolating with. Many have been forced away from their accepting, chosen family, where they can be 100% themselves. Resulting in hiding their

true

selves,

returning

to

‘the

closet’.

This

‘closet’ harms mental wellbeing such as increasing the levels of stress hormones and increasing the chances of anxiety, depression and burnout. Social isolation

Reports of domestic abuse have risen since the lockdown was announced. For example, since the new safety measures came into effect, the LGBT Foundation has seen a 30% increase in domestic abuse/violence calls to their helpline. However,

many

companies

have

decided

to

recreate queer spaces digitally. This allows queer or questioning young people to briefly escape their unaccepting

SPREADING HAPPINESS THROUGH POETRY By Anastasia Toha

Local Currently, we are under lockdown. We have been torn away from loved ones, whether it be

friends

or

family.

Consequently,

it

has

taken a toll on our mental health, making us feel

more

lonely,

isolated

and

depressed.

However, we must remember that life will get better, and we must hold onto the idea of hope to get us through. Amid all the gloom, one woman is trying to alleviate the pain of lockdown Hayley

through

poetry.

Crawshaw’s

Rich,

suddenly

died at the age of 37. "Rich and I were soulmates and loved each other unconditionally," Hayley says of her late husband. When we experience a loss—whether it is the death of someone we loved, a divorce loss or even the loss of a job—pain and sadness are a natural

and

normal

aspect

of

the

healing

process. When we lose someone we love, it changes us. The person who died was a part of us and our life. This death means we must mourn a loss not only outside but also within ourselves. Naturally, these kinds of losses can make us feel incredibly powerless, seemingly helpless,

and

deeply

hopeless

at

times.

However, we must not let the remainder of our lives be taken over with grief, we must always hold onto hope. "I can get behind the concept of holding onto hope" says Hayley. The

grieving. It’s essential to be patient, honest and open with yourself, to allow the process to naturally unfold. Remember to hold onto hope, and accept and be at peace with what happened. A

would

never

anyone

to

‘be

She just thinks that it is important that people know life will be better and that someone out there cares about them and loves them. "If I can touch someone’s heart that day, or inspire them to help someone else, or to make a change in their lives for the better, then that’s been a good day for me too because I’ve shared and spread a little love." she

lockdown and other current affairs, we ought to hold onto hope. Life will get better.

NASA's Next Mars Rover 'Perseverance' Will Honour Health Care Workers NASA announced its Perseverance rover will launch to Mars with a global tribute to health care workers. We wanted to demonstrate our appreciation for those who have put their personal well-being on the line for the good of others. -Matt Wallace, Perseverance deputy project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California

[NASA/JPL-Caltech]

The launch window is from 20 July and extends until 11 August, in case bad weather or other issues that prevent the 09:15 ET launch 20 July. That date has been projected since the rover was announced in December 2012. In addition, 20 July, has other significance-it's when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. FDA Approved the First Prescription Video Game for Kids With ADHD

with

such

as

inattentive or combined-type ADHD who have demonstrated an attention issue. The game was scientifically designed to challenge a child's brain during treatment, requiring the child to focus on multiple tasks at the same time. Although there isn't much detail as to how the design of EndeavorRx is different from other task-based games, EndeavorRx's FDA approval is a big step forward for the idea of games as treatment or therapy. In a world where technology is woven into our lives, it is important to harness it and medicinal video games as a type of non-drug therapy for the future.

For example, the French game studio

Ubisoft is currently working on a prescription video game designed to treat Amblyopia, or "lazy eye', in partnership with the medical company Amblyotech. [Adapted From: Nield, David. Science Alert. Engineers Convert Carbon Dioxide in Air Back to Useful Industrial Products

Chemical engineers from University of New South Wales have developed a new technology that helps convert harmful carbon dioxide emissions into chemical building blocks to make useful industrial products like fuel and plastics. In short, they used the very cheap and abundant compound zinc oxide, to convert waste carbon dioxide into useful industrial products. When zinc oxide is heated very high temperatures in a technique called flame spray pyrolysis (FSP), the zinc oxide creates nanoparticles which act as the catalyst for turning carbon dioxide into 'syngas'-a mix of hydrogen and carbon monoxide used in the manufacture of industrial products. From here, the team needs to ensure the technology tolerates the harsh condition and other chemicals found in gaseous industrial waste. Nonetheless, any advancement in reducing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere is positive step towards minimising the impact of climate change.

Smart Sponge Can Soak Up Oil Spills A team from Northwestern University has developed an extremely porous sponge that can selectively absorb oil spills in water. The sponge's unique structure is the reason behind its ability to absorb more than 30 times its weight in oil. The sponge has a nanocomposite coating of magnetic nanostructures and a carbon-based substrate that attracts oil (oleophilic), water resistant (hydrophobic) and magnetic. This structure means the sponge can selectively interact and bind with oil molecules, capturing and storing the oil until it is squeezed out. After squeezing the oil out, it can be reused many times without losing its effectiveness. This means the sponge is more cost effective than skimming oil floating on top of the water with unrecyclable sorbents and more eco-friendly than merely burning the oil. Furthermore, the leader of the research team, Professor Vinayak Dravid, said that instead of throwing the sponge away once it is no longer effective, the team plans to burn it and use the soot as an electrode for lithium ion batteries. enforced tougher control when using acoustic devices to scare them off. Shortly after, the Scottish parliament voted to give mountain hares special protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, which will make it an offence to intentionally or recklessly kill or injure the hare without a licence. The conservation of species is important to humans as the loss of one species often triggers the loss of others. When an ecosystem fails, our own health and wellbeing are at risk. Daily Heroes Homemade and Handmade Children's Masks Prasanna Imandi, living in the Najmah compound, Saudi Arabia has dedicated her free time to making reusable face masks for the children in her local community. The project began earlier this month from collective concerns by parents over the short supply of children's face masks. With the idea to hand-stitch a couple masks for her own two children, Prasanna produced 20 masks instead, and posted them on Facebook to the delight of the community parents who welcomed her kind gesture. She has now donated 55 handmade face-masks to children from the ages of 4-7. Her kindness has not stopped there as she still continues to make face masks to date, using just her hand, a needle and thread. (nominated by Deepbluesea, Saudi Arabia)

Selling Bracelets to Help Black-Owned Businesses

A group of friends started a summer business that is helping black-owned businesses and neighbourhoods in Minneapolis which were hit hard due to the coronavirus pandemic and protests following the death of George Floyd. The business was started by Kamryn Johnson, daughter of former NFL player Ron Johnson. The business, "Kamryn & Friends: Bracelets For Unity & Justice" has raised more than $90,000 through selling bracelets online and other donations.
