letters to the editor

Dear Editor,

I am responding to Peter Bradley's recent letter and am respectfully suggesting an alternate solution.

Why don't we leave 'ADVANCE AUSTRALIA' where it is - keep that for formal occasions other than sporting events - Anzac Day, Australia Day, opening of Parliaments, royal visits etc.

Sport in Australia is KING - it deserves its own anthem.

Let’s adopt a separate 'anthem' for major sporting occasions that deserves an anthem being played.

We don't have to look far to see how multinational Australia has become - just have a look at some of the names of the members of all our sporting teams at state and national level.

My alternate proposal is the adoption of Judith Durham's hit 'WE ARE ONE' as Australia's Sporting Anthem - to be sung at Olympic and Commonwealth Games when Australians of many races are receiving Gold Medals, at the commencement of International Sporting

Dear Editor, Insurance for e-bikes - I recently renewed my household insurance policy. I had some queries about the renewal, so I contacted the insurer's HELP DESK to clarify matters. In the course of that conversation, I was advised that my e-bike is not insured under the policy. Bicycles are covered. But not e-bikes. I asked if I could take out a separate policy for just the e-bike but was advised that was not possible. The

Dear Editor, events involving Australia and opponents from overseas, Grand Finals and so on. We are soon to be hosting a number of international sporting world cup events - culminating in the 2032 OLYMPICS.

I wanted to send you three superstars a huge thank you for producing, every fortnight, a most amazing magazine, which you then deliver to my driveway free of charge. How wonderful. We are happy to support all the advertisers in there and thank you for highlighting all new businesses- and the current ones too of coursewhich make Bribie and surrounds their place of business.

Don’t be discouraged by those very few minorities who will always find something to complain about. The great majority of us are IMMENSELY grateful for the HUGE and eclectic range of topics covered.

Well done you three. Kind regards and keep up the fabulous work!! L.D Evans.

We would not be inventing the wheelIreland has a sporting anthem - 'IRELAND CALLS'. In 1995 the Irish Rugby Football Union commissioned this song as an alternate to the then republic's anthem 'THE SOLDIER'S SONG. Since then, Irish athletes and sports fans have showed great affection for the song. People at sporting occasions are voting with their larynx!!

I totally agree with Peter's comment about 'dry eyes in the house'.

It is always played when our Wallabies play Ireland. It was played when Ireland played during the recent cricket world cup as well as when they played the All Blacks during their recent tour of New Zealand.

I agree that some of the words would have to be modernised/updated - retain the chorus but rewrite two verses.

sympathetic HELP DESK person advised that he understood this was the position for other household insurers. He knew of no insurer that covered e-bikes under their general household policy and knew of no insurer who could provide coverage through a separate policy.

What is the experience of other The Bribie Island readers? Is your e-bike covered by your household policy? If so, who is your insurer? John

Dear Editor,

I agree with Peter Bradley, that our current National Anthem should be replaced with the Seekers’ great song. But why have three verses, when most people can’t remember more than one. My suggested verse acknowledges all the people who have contributed to our nation, though admittedly it doesn’t say as much about the land itself.

“Our founders came in ancient times, thousands of years ago. While others came in prison ships, and helped Australia grow. Now many seek their freedom here, beneath the southern sunWe all combine, in this great land, to be Australian.”

It leads into the original chorus with its aspirations, to make a great anthem.
