Story Pirates Come Ashore at Crim School

Crim student authors (bottom row l-r): Eden Levi, Nate Henry, Gregory (Shay) Zimmerman, and Liana Schilling with the Story Pirates cast. Crim School just concluded a wonderful educational program with Story Pirates, sponsored by the school’s PTO. Story Pirates is a national education and media organization that celebrates the words and ideas of young people by pairing teachers with actors and comedians: giving students a variety of tools to make learning more engaging. Crim’s third grade classes participated in the Play/Write Program; an in-classroom writing workshop series followed by a musical sketch comedy show featuring stories by students and performed by the Pirates for the entire student body. During the four-week writing residency program, third graders learned how to compose a fictional story with elements of character, setting, problem and solution. At the end of the program, the Story Pirates demonstrated how a story can be brought to life by putting on skits based on four of Crim students’ fictional pieces. Nate Henry created a story about

a boy who tried everything to get his friend to come out of his house to play kickball. Eden Levi wrote “How Smart You are Big Face,” in which a girl affectionately called “Big Face” who knows everything suddenly loses her “all knowing powers” and disappoints the children at the park. Liana Schilling’s story “Louie’s Big Day,” was about a basketball’s life and the hilarious tale of him getting the TV Remote to work. “The Mysterious Tin Foil Thief,” by Gregory (Shay) Zimmerman was a surprising and fun story about a giraffe who likes to eat tin foil, and in the end catches his Grandma stealing the last of it from the store. The Story Pirates ended their engaging performance by having the audience participate in creating a story while the cast performed it on stage. With the students’ wonderful imaginations and the Pirates vast improvisational skills, the assembly ended with huge smiles.

Family of Raritan World War II Soldier Reconnects with Belgium Family

An important part of Anthony Musz’s WWII experience was the friendship that developed between Anthony and the Estievenart family of Belgium. Above: Anthony with Jacqueline, Susan and Christianne Estievenart in Belgium on November 19, 1944. By Bruce Doorly bdoorly@verizon.net Last year the BReeze ran a story about the World War II experiences of Raritan’s Anthony Musz who served in the Army in Europe. Anthony, who died in 1986, seldom spoke about the war. His story was put together utilizing a scrapbook that Anthony compiled with letters written home to Raritan Tavern Owner Tony Orlando during the war. An important part of his wartime experience was the friendship that developed between Anthony and a Belgium family. The friendship began late in 1944 as U.S. troops marched toward Germany through Belgium. The Germans had conquered and occupied Belgium for several years. As the U.S. forces liberated the Belgium towns, the people were very grateful to the troops. The U.S. troops remained in Belgium to rest and re-supply for a few months before moving into Germany. It was during this time period that many U.S. soldiers made friends with Belgium families who opened their homes to them. Anthony Musz’s scrapbook has several photos of the Belgium family he became close friends with. Their names and locations were written on the back of each photo. The Estievenart family lived in Jambes, Belgium. The family consisted of Mom, Dad, four daughters and two sons. In his letters home, Anthony often wrote about them, calling the Mom his “Laundry Lady.” His writings also show that she and her family were much more than that as he spent a lot of time visiting them writing, “I get to stay with four lovely girls.” Some of the photos in his scrapbook show him and his army buddy at Christmas dinner with them. As an example of how close he was to them, one photo has him holding hands with two of the daughters. Another photo is of Anthony and the youngest daughter, 5-year-old Jacqueline. Anthony is holding a puppy and a smiling Jacqueline has her arm around him. That photo captivated this author and Anthony Musz’s (identical twin) daughters Cathy and Cindy. We wondered if this young

girl and any of her siblings are still alive? Would they remember Anthony? This author, together with Anthony’s daughters, decided to search for the Estievenart family. Our initial attempt was through Facebook. Using just the last name, we found several matches. The Facebook privacy setting - always changing and ever confusing - seemed to be in my favor as I got access to almost all of the profiles. It looked promising since the name Estievenart is almost exclusively associated with people in Belgium. But as I paged (yes paged) through the matches I saw that this name is very popular in Belgium with at least 50 matches displayed. We decided to send messages through Facebook with the old

photo of Anthony and Jacqueline explaining who we are looking for and why. But do they speak English in Belgium? A quick Wikipedia lookup showed that they speak Dutch and French. So my message was translated into two languages using Google Translate. I sent messages to 30 Estievenarts and waited for a response. My previous experience with messages (through my historical work) has shown that half respond to cold Facebook messages even if it is to say they are not the right person. However, in this case, I did not get a single response. Perhaps there is a different culture in Belgium that does not respond to messages from strangers. Or maybe Facebook has a filter in Belgium and the messages were not going through. The reason was unimportant as a zero response, is a zero response. I abandoned the Facebook approach and used the Internet to try to obtain an address for the family. In the U.S., there is “whitepages.com” which is very useful in finding addresses. Was there anything similar in Belgium? After various types of searches, I was delighted to find two addresses for Estievenart families in Jambes, Belgium. We sent our note in three languages by regular mail with copies of old photos. I provided all my contact information. After a couple weeks with no response, we felt that our letter, a long shot to begin with, had not found the right family. However, a month later, a letter with a Belgium return address arrived at my home. I quickly opened it to find copies of photos

Community Recognizes Centenarian Wilhermina Lugo of Bridgewater

Wilhermina Lugo A mass celebrating Wilhermina Lugo’s 100th birthday was offered by her son, Rev. Joseph Lugo Jr. on January 7th at their home in the Bradley Gardens section of Bridgewater. Mrs. Lugo, known as ‘Willy’ to her friends, has been active in the Bradley Gardens, Raritan, and Bridgewater communities for the past half century, ever since she and her late husband, Joseph sold their commercial/ retail grocery stores in Manhattan and moved to the tranquil countryside of Bradley Estates following WWII. Wilhermina quickly transitioned from a city business bookkeeping environment to one of homemaker and mother while immersing herself in a wide range of community activities.

A communicant of Bradley Garden’s Church of the Holy Trinity for the past 64 years, Wilhermina served as a member of the Alter Rosary Society, the Parish Advisory Council, and the last surviving charter member of its Senior Citizens ministry. Mrs. Lugo has served as a volunteer with the local chapter of the American Red Cross, the local Rescue Squad Auxiliary and as a member and volunteer with the Bridgewater Township Senior Citizens Group. Willy is remembered and loved by her many friends for actively organizing and hosting bus trips for the Senior Center’s members to local museums, exhibits, casinos and restaurants. A strong woman with a lifelong mind for numbers and details, Willy imbued her son, Joseph Jr. with the compassionate intelligence that has led to his lifelong parish ministries in NJ and around the world during service with the US Air Force. In addition to numerous congratulatory messages from family and friends, Mrs. Lugo received an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Benedict XVI; special greetings from N.J. Governor Chris Christie; and a Citation of Commendations and Praise from the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Student Collects Thousands of Books for Libraries in Africa

Bianca Patel “Everyone in the world should have the opportunity to read and grow,” says Bianca Patel a sophomore at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. “Books are an essential part of our lives and ev-

eryone in the world should have access to books anytime they want; the way we do here in the United States.” With this intention in mind, Bianca started a book drive through the African Library Project to help children of Africa. The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!). This is Bianca’s second year of fundraising for books and monetary donations for the African Library Project. The books Bianca collected

The sixth grade BFL All Stars included TJ Schneider, Kyle Nickel, Jarrett Leandro, Alec Miseo and Trevor Witzel. Joining David for the 7th grade All Stars was Isaiah Black and Cal Henderson. The eighth grade BFL All Stars included Nick Attanasio, Matt Alesandro, Zach Miseo, Drew Perez and Harley Monteiro.

this year went toward two libraries in Africa - Shishila Primary School and Lisolane Primary School - both in Leribe, Lesotho. Bianca raised over $1,000 and collected 2,117 books. Bianca is also involved in working with the Uplift Humanity Organization that works with orphans and juveniles at a facility in India. Last summer she travelled to India for three weeks along with several other teens from New Jersey. She will continue her work in India this summer. Both of these service projects are in line with Bianca’s vision to help less fortunate children as it feels very rewarding to her.

Hamilton Students Make Valentines for Vets – Mili-

tary personnel serving overseas will be getting a very special treat in the coming weeks thanks to a school-wide project that took place at Hamilton School on January 17th. Using crayons, markers and colored pencils, students spent a portion of their lunch period coloring valentines and then decorating them with heart-shaped stickers. Inside the cards were heartfelt messages for the soldiers - “Thank you for protecting us!” and “Come home soon.” Those heartfelt wishes will be delivered to troops through Operation Shoebox. Rod Hirsch, Executive Director of Operation Shoebox New Jersey, helped lead the Valentines for Vets project explaining to the students the importance of sending these care packages to our troops overseas. Above: Joseph Moskal, Christian Salgado, and Jack Lawson show off their Valentines while Rod Hirsch of Operation Shoebox looks on.

Bridgewater Councilman Filipe Pedroso Sworn in at Township’s Reorganization Meeting

Filipe Pedroso (left), Sophia Pedroso, Liana Valeeva, and Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) (right). Councilman Filipe Pedroso was sworn in by Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) to an unexpired term at the Bridgewater Council’s reorganizational meeting on January 7th. In January 2012, Pedroso was selected by the Council to replace Dan Hayes on the Council after he was elected mayor. Pedroso was then selected by the Bridgewater Republican Municipal Committee as their candidate in the primaries. Since Pedroso was filling the unexpired term of Hayes, Pedroso had to run in the November election to finish Hayes’ Council term. “It is a great honor to be elected by the public to serve them on the township council, and I am

humbled by the trust and confidence they have placed in me,” said Pedroso. “I will work hard every day to keep that trust, and I will work just as hard to earn the trust of those who didn’t vote for me. Whether you’re a Republican or Democrat or Independent, I believe you can agree that providing essential services, balanced with controlled real estate taxes is important, while also preserving open space and protecting our quality of life.” In his 35 years residing in Bridgewater, Pedroso has lived at six different addresses. “I’ve been fortunate to live in different parts of this wonderful township, and it gives me a unique sense of understanding of the many

diverse and multicultural geographical areas we have within the township’s 32 ½ square miles. Combined with my 10 year service on the town’s zoning Board of Adjustment, I know and understand the uniqueness and special characteristics to our many different neighborhoods.” Pedroso was appointed by the Council as the liaison to the Budget/Finance Committee and will work with Councilman Matthew Moench to review the Administration’s 2013 budget and make recommendations to the Council regarding budgetary issues. Pedroso who has shown to be a fiscal conservative when voting against the Mayor’s 2012 proposed budget that had a 6.5% tax increase, and then again voted no when the Council approved a 3.03% tax increase by a 3-2 vote, said, “All our residents continue to be challenged by the current economic times, and I hope to work with the Administration to find ways to continue to provide essential services, improve our road infrastructure, while maintaining fiscal conservative ideologies to help our residents keep more money in their pocket.” Pedroso is the father of two daughters, who both attend Van Holten Elementary School. He is the founder of Pedroso Law P.C., a law firm based in Newark, New Jersey, and has been practicing law since 1996.

Bridgewater Resident Joe Wing Flew Mission over Hiroshima

The crew of the B29 Battlin’ Bonnie. Joe Wing is the first on bottom left. The following is the continuation of an article that appeared in the January 2013 issue of The BReeze regarding Bridgewater resident Joe Wing’s historic mission during WWII. By Bruce Doorly bdoorly@verizon.net While stationed in Tinian in the beginning of August 1945, Joe noticed one plane and storage location had guards around it. This was very unusual. The next day he was told that he would be flying on a special bombing mission over Japan. His plane would not be bombing - they along with a couple of other B29s would be protecting a B29 that had recently been named the Enola Gay. At a pre-flight briefing he and the other crewmen were issued dark goggles as there would be a tremendous flash of light when this new special bomb was dropped. They flew from Tinian Island along with the Enola Gay, and two other B29s – one that took photographs and one that took scientific measurements. The primary target that day was Hiroshima. The bombing run went like clockwork. There was no enemy opposition, the weather was clear, and the

bomb was dropped as scheduled. As soon as the bomb was released, the plane banked hard left full throttle and flew away as quickly as possible to avoid the forthcoming blast. By the time the bomb exploded, they were over 9 miles away, but the turbulence from the blast still shook the plane. Joe, along with the plane’s crew, saw a tremendous amount of smoke and fire over what had been Hiroshima. They knew indeed it was a special bomb, but they could not fully comprehend what had happened. Joe learned later that he faced the dangers of the unknown in that bombing run. It was thought that the blast could knock the planes out of the sky killing the crew or forcing them to bailout over Japan. To avoid torture before certain death at the hands of the Japanese, the crew of the Enola Gay had been given suicide pills, but Joe’s crew was not given any pills. Fortunately, all the planes returned safely. After landing back at Tinian, the crew learned what had been dropped on Hiroshima. It was an atomic bomb that had the force of 20,000 tons of TNT. Up to that time, it was by far the most powerful bomb ever

dropped. A few days after the bomb drop, Paul Tibbets, the pilot and commander of the bomb run, addressed them to thank them and explain some of the details about this single bomb that could destroy an entire city. Just a week later, the Japanese surrendered ending World War II. Amazingly, that surrender came without the U.S. setting foot on the Japanese homeland. It was the months long devastating bombing by the B29s - along with two atomic bombs - that finally caused Japan to surrender. The Japanese warrior code was to never surrender - they preferred to “fight” to the death, but the aerial bombing - both conventional and nuclear - did not contain much “fight”. After the Japanese surrender on August 14, 1945 there were still some missions remaining for the B29s. Throughout Japan many Americans were still in prisoner of war camps that had now been abandoned by the guards. The guards, while often brutal throughout the years, had fed the prisoners, but now the guards were gone. Some camps had a little food stored when the guards fled; others did not. The locations of the prisoner of war camps were quickly identified. The U.S. put together supplies of food and medicine (and some liquor too) that was dropped to the starving

Parachutes holding supplies of food and medicine are dropped to starving American POWs. The men quickly got to the packages and rearranged the parachutes on the ground to spell out the word “THANKS.” men. Joe Wing flew on one of these missions. The plane flew low and slow to assure the accurate dropping of the supplies by parachute. He recalls what a delight it was to see the men waving and jumping up and down. The former prisoners quickly got to the packages and then started to rearrange the parachutes on the ground. The B29 circled overhead as the parachutes were being positioned. Joe and the crew saw that they were spelling out the word “THANKS.” Joe had brought a camera along on this flight and snapped a photo of this. A few days later, Joe Wing received orders to move away from the battlefront to the homefront. His job was done. The war was over. He had done his part in bringing it to an end.

Joe eventually became a police officer and served 25 years on the New York City Police Department. In 1954 he married his wife Teresa. In 2000, they moved to Bridgewater where they remain to this day. While sitting in his peaceful home today, Joe says that he sometimes wonders if the memories of his war time experience are real - as the soldier’s life he once lived seems so far removed from his quiet life today. This author’s thoughts are that while his peaceful life today is indeed far removed from the battles he fought, it is the victory in the battles that helped give this country (and Joe Wing) the peaceful life that we all have today. On January 13th the Central Jersey Music Educators Association Region Concert was held at Montgomery High School where BRHS musicians held 7 seats in the Orchestra, 14 in the Symphonic Band and 13 seats in the Wind Ensemble. Submitted photo The New Year continues to bring unprecedented awards for the BRHS Band. As if becoming the only band on the East Coast to get into the top 20 BOA Grand Nationals in history in November wasn’t enough, the band continues to emit excellence. January 8th kicked-off the very first ever BRHS Jazz plus Alumni performance at the high school where B-R musician alumni were invited to play along with the jazz band. The idea originated by BRHS Artistic Director, Larry Markiewicz, and was quickly circulated by current Jazz band students. With the help of Alumni and former 2012 Drum Major Nick Mossa, 12 BRHS musician alumni participated on stage, and many more alumni were scattered throughout the audience as spectators. This is hopefully the first of many to come. On December 8th the Central Jersey Region Band Auditions were held at John P. Stevens HS in Edison. The band surpassed an all-time highwater mark and claimed 34 band acceptances into the Central Jersey Region II Band Ensembles. Each student who auditioned for placement in an Ensemble was recognized at the January 10th BRHS Winter

Concert, and each student who made a Region band Ensemble was personally recognized that evening. On January 13th the Central Jersey Music Educators Association Region Concert was held at Montgomery High School where BRHS musicians held 7 seats in the Orchestra, 14 in the Symphonic Band and 13 seats in the Wind Ensemble. Last year’s 2012 Honors Wind Ensemble which included sophomores, juniors and seniors submitted a CD to the Mid-Atlantic Honors Wind Band Festival. Through blind adjudication via an independent panel of judges from across the Mid-Atlantic Region of the country, they were selected and invited as one of the top three bands to perform. This prestigious event will happen at Rutgers University on March 1st at Nicholas Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The BRHS Symphonic and Wind Ensemble bands will perform at Carnegie Hall on March 15th. They will perform on stage and take a back stage tour as well. The BRHS marching band was recognized by the board of education in December for placing higher than any other New

Raritan Mayor’s Message Once again The BReeze has been very generous and offered me the opportunity to have space in their newspaper to write a monthly column for Raritan. I know that many of you read it each month and often comment to me about the topic. The Council and I have begun the budget process for 2013 and we have had our preliminary meeting with each department. The municipal budget can be a very complex document and we will continue to try to keep costs to a minimum and of course we need to stay within the 2 percent cap imposed by Governor Christie. Please feel free to email me with any comments, suggestions, or questions about the budget. Please remember that bulk refuse will not be picked up in February. It will resume on March 14th. Volunteers are always needed to help with borough committees and commissions, so if you’d like to volunteer please let me know. I can be reached at 908-231-1300 x17 or jliptak@raritan-nj.org. Jersey band in history at the recent Band of America Grand Nationals in Indianapolis. With members of the band and their parents watching, along with director Larry Markiewicz, the board showed a video of the band’s performance at the competition. “The band ended as the highest-placing New Jersey band in the history of the competition, and the second New Jersey band ever to make the cut for semifinals,” board president Evan Lerner said. “And they were awarded the National Esprit de Corps trophy for its ideals of leadership. The band returned from Indianapolis and immediately headed to the state championships in Edison, where they won first place with a score of 98.265.” Board member Jeffrey Brookner read the resolution into the record that honors the band, and also recognizes the Avon High School in Indiana, which provided the BridgewaterRaritan band a space to practice after they missed out on many practices because of Superstorm Sandy. “The board of education, on behalf of Bridgewater and Raritan, extends deepest thanks to the Avon School Corporation and parents for their assistance,” he read in the resolution. The Esprit de Corps award, given at the championships for leadership and morale, was given to both Bridgewater-Raritan and Avon High School for working together, and for the assistance provided. Being so thankful for the support and genuine humanitarianism that Avon displayed, the BRHS Band Parents paidit-forward by taking collection of nearly $1,000 to be donated to the NJ Union Beach High School Music program which was hit hard with devastation by Superstorm Sandy.

Tiffany Carra is serenaded by Justin Bieber. Tiffany Carra of Raritan became the envy of thousands of girls when she was chosen from over 50,000 fans at Madison Square Garden to be serenaded by Justin Bieber during his concert on November 28. When Bieber performs his hit song “One Less Lonely Girl,” he invites a girl on stage to be the object of his affection or the “one less lonely girl” during the performance. When it came time for the people in Justin’s crew to bring a girl backstage, they walked up and down the aisles looking for a girl. “Out of all the girls in the arena, I didn’t think being chosen was an option but my friend Lacey said that she saw Al-

The BReeze

lison (one of the people who helps pick the OLLG) staring at me,” recalls Tiffany. “I just brushed it off and didn’t believe her.” After several minutes went by, Allison and her husband walked up to Tiffany and whispered in her ear, “Would you like to be the One Less Lonely Girl?” “I almost fell backward in surprise,” said Tiffany. Allison led Tiffany backstage. “I couldn’t believe what was about to happen to me. After being a fan for 4 years and then saving up all summer for our tickets, it would all be worth it now.” Tiffany, after thinking about how many people she was about to be in front of, became nervous and jittery. People from Justin’s crew came to talk to her. They asked her name and explained what was about to happen. Tiffany managed to wipe the tears from her eyes and pull herself together before she was pushed through the curtain and onstage with Justin Bieber. “I remember seeing my face on all the jumbotrons as I walked toward Justin. Justin took my hand and led me to a chair where he serenaded me,” Tiffany said. “He sang to me and crowned me with a floral head piece and then touched my face and put his arm around me. I was in so much shock it was all kind of a blur and I just kept saying to myself ‘Is this actually happening to me?’” Tiffany remembers looking at the crowd and seeing the mass of people and flashes going off. Before

she knew it the song had finished. Bieber gave her a hug, grabbed her hand and they ran off stage together. Bieber was pulled in another direction to get ready for the next song and Tiffany hung on to Allison still in shock. Tiffany explains, “It was the craziest experience of my life. I feel like it didn’t actually happen and it was a only a dream.” After the concert Tiffany got her own taste of stardom as girls ran up to congratulate her and ask to take pictures with her. “I had to stay an hour after the concert to take pictures with all the girls,” said Tiffany. “I couldn’t believe people would actually want a picture with me.” The taste of stardom continued for Tiffany several days after the concert as classmates and teachers at Bridgewater-Raritan High School approached her and asked about the experience. Over the course of a week she told her story hundreds of times. Fans who attended the November 28th concert sent Tiffany pictures they had taken with their cell phones and sent them to her via email. Tiffany had those pictures framed along with the flowers that she had preserved. “Overall, it was the best night of my life and the craziest thing that has ever happened and will ever happen to me,” said Tiffany. “I think about it every day and relive the moment when I watch the video.”

Belgium Family Reunited - Continued from page 1

In 1944 while serving overseas, Anthony Musz befriended the Estievenart family of Belgium. Above: Anthony and the youngest Estievenart daughter, 5-year-old Jacqueline. of Anthony Musz and a handwritten letter in French. The handwriting was difficult to read which made it hard to get the exact spelling of most words. I scanned the letter and emailed it to Anthony’s daughters asking if they knew anyone who reads French. Fortunately a friend of theirs who knows French had just left their home – and a quick call got the friend back to the house to translate the letter. With the translation we learned that our letter had reached a woman who had married one of the Estievenart sons. However, he had passed away. She said she was around during the war and remembers Anthony as a good friend. She informs us that the other son and two of the daughters are still alive. One of the daughters alive is Jacqueline who is in the photo that inspired us. The woman gave us the address of the surviving son whose name is Ferdinand and we mailed him a letter. After only two weeks we received a letter back from Ferdinand (in English) informing us that Anthony was an intimate friend whom they loved dearly. Anthony had spent a lot of time at their house–and was very fond of the girls–and the girls were fond of him. He remembers that Anthony brought chocolate to the youngest girl Jacqueline. These treats were indeed special as Belgium was a country recovering from years of occupation, thus such small pleasures as chocolates were scarce. Ferdinand went on to say that he, who was 17-years-old then, joined the U.S. Army when they moved on to Germany. Many Belgium boys were glad to join the fight against

their previous oppressors. A week later we received an email from a gentleman named Luc who informed us that his wife is the Jacqueline from the photo we had first sent to the family. We emailed him back with a few questions and asked for a photo of Jacqueline today. Surprisingly, we got no response even after sending additional emails. A couple months later, I did receive an email with a photo attached. Before reading the email I opened the photo. I was intrigued to see that the new photo of the 72-year-old Jacqueline did show a resemblance to that of the 5-year-old Jacqueline from our old photo. But, I sadly noticed that the new photo is from a funeral card. When I read the email Luc explained that his wife Jacqueline, who had been ill for a long time, passed away a couple weeks ago. He told us that she did see the article on the Internet about Anthony Musz with the photos of him and her family. Luc says it pleased her a great deal to see the story. We emailed him back to express our sorrows and to thank him for the photo. The brother Ferdinand, who had previously written a letter to us, told us that the next time he comes to this country (to visit his daughter in the U.S.) he would very much like to meet with Anthony’s daughters. Ferdinand’s daughter spoke with Anthony’s daughter to get information for the upcoming meeting. She said that her father Ferdinand had been absolutely amazed and thrilled that the family of Anthony Musz had contacted them. He looks forward to someday meeting with Anthony’s daughters. It should be a unique meeting indeed.

Hamilton School Students Discuss Learning New Things Students from Mrs. Challandes’ second grade class at Hamilton School recently answered the question, “If you could learn to do something new next week, what would you choose? Why?” Their answers appear below.

Audrey

Whish, whish, whish went my paintbrush across the paper. If there was one thing I could learn by next week, it would be to paint a self-portrait. I would want to make a self-portrait so I could give it to my family so they could hang it in our house. Painting is my life!

You’ll never believe this! I want to live on Mars. So, next week I want to learn about space so I can colonize Mars. By doing this, I will read books and ask questions to scientists. If ever an asteroid hits Earth, we can travel to Mars and live there instead.

Lauren

You’ll never believe this. If I were to learn something new next week, I would learn how to horseback ride. I would learn to have balance and I would learn to canter. If there was an emergency, I could help others by picking them up and riding with them to safety.

Samuel

Cr, cr, cr went the machine as I printed the Bridgewater newspaper. If there was one thing I could learn by next week, it would be how to print the newspaper on big machines. I want to learn how to print newspapers so I can tell the town about the news.

Colin

Boom! Boom, boom went the chemicals as I was mixing them. If I were to learn something new next week I would want to learn chemistry. I want to learn chemistry because I could see which mixtures bubble and which mixtures don’t.

Charlotte

If there was something I would want to learn next week, I would want to learn to be a veterinarian. I want to help sick and hurt animals. I would help them get better by giving them food, water, and medicine. I want the animals to be healthy.

Nathaniel

Whish, whish, whish went the wind as it rushed past my head. If there’s anything that I could learn next week, it would be to become an electrician. I could help people during a hurricane to get their power back in their homes.

Ava

If I could learn something new next week, I would like to learn how to make dresses. I would donate the dresses I make to people who lost everything during Hurricane Sandy. This way, people who lost everything will stay warm in the winter.

students raise as much money as they can for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. • For more information or to volunteer please contact Michael Schwartz at 973-222-7729 or schweatz@msn.com. If you’d like to participate, they are looking for students, faculty, staff and parents of the Bridgewater-Raritan community to sign up as shavees. For more information or to participate, please visit the event website at: stbaldricks.org/events/vanholtenconquerkidscancer. Each year, 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide of which 15,000 reside within the United States. St. Baldrick’s is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research. At Foundation events all throughout the year, brave volunteers shave their heads, raising funds for childhood cancer research. Like runners in a marathon, “shaveesâ€? collect donations from friends, family and associates. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation receives these funds and makes grants to research experts to find new and better cures for fighting kids’ cancer. Since their first event in 2000, St. Baldrick’s has raised over $100,000,000 for childhood cancer research.

PANTHER SPORTS Ice Hockey - The success of this year’s hockey team is not in its size or experience; it comes from playing for the team and as a team. Fourteen different players have scored so far this season demonstrating the players’ commitment to the team and also helps to explain their success (11-2-2) with only two returning seniors. Scoring leaders Steven Cleary (11 goals, 5 assists) and Mark Kinsey (9 goals, 14 assists) are just as likely to get an assist as they are a goal. Even senior defenseman Ted Sweeney makes the list of top scorers for the Panthers (4 goals, 7 assists). Tyler Darby (4 goals, 6 assists) and Alec Caseiro (5 goals, 9 assists) are also included on that list. Senior Bobby Esposito has 247 saves in goal. Be sure to make a game, it is worth the extra layers to watch this team in action.

Left: Senior Ice Hockey Captain Ted Sweeney, rushes up ice during a 3-2 win over Hillsborough at Pro Tec Arena on January 18th. Photo/Dennis Avenoso

Girls Basketball - Outscoring opponents by an average 18.2 points per game has the girls boasting an impressive 13-1 record. The team and senior standout Denisha Petty-Evans continue to excel in all aspects of the game. With only half the season completed Petty-Evans surpassed 1000 career points and shows no signs of slowing down (267 points, 48 steals, 15 blocks, and 44 rebounds). The other leading scorers for the Panthers are Eunice Abogado (117 points, 25 steals), Mary Kronenwetter (110 points, 17 blocks, 60 rebounds), Hannah Brophy (70 points, 43 rebounds), and Sarah Brophy (63 points, 19steals). The girls’ dominating offense, smothering defense, and depth on the bench ensure high seeds in the upcoming county and state tournaments. Boys Basketball - The boys have stutter-stepped their way to an 9-5 record, beating some very good teams along the way. Seniors Josh Jankowski (43 points), Eric Murdock (158 points), and Dominic Pace (88 points), with juniors Ben Miller (79 points) and Vincent Pace (141 points) have the potential to take down any team in the Skyland conference or the county. Wrestling - The 4-7 Panthers placed 7th out of a field of 13 at the Somerset County Tournament and Matt Noble successfully defended his title as county champ. Sophomore Noble defeated his Bound Brook opponent 5-0 to take home the 113 pound title.

Right: Sophomore Jordan Petersen rushing the goal in the second period in 3-2 win over Hillsborough at Pro Tec Arena on January 18th. Photo/Dennis Avenoso

Girls Swimming - With an extremely competitive schedule the girl’s have a respectable 4-3 record. The recent win over Pingry, 94-78 was done with only 3 first place finishes; 200 medley relay - Lauren Hall, Noelle Buckley, Brooke Sharkey, Emma Sommers: 200 individual medley - Brooke Sharkey: 100 backstroke - Lauren Hall. At the Skyland Conference Championships Sommers brought home the silver in the 50 freestyle and Hall placed fifth in the 100 backstroke. Boys Swimming - The swimming Panthers were nothing short of amazing at the Skyland Conference Championships. They placed a swimmer in the top 6 for every race but one, had 6 first place finishes, and set 3 meet records! The star of the show was Dylan Sali. Sali set two of the records himself (100 backstroke - beating his own record from last year and the 200 IM), was part of the record setting relay (400 free with Nic Agnello, Jason Tan, Jesse Novak), and was part of another first place relay (200 medley with Bora Sebuktekin, Brandon O’Brien, Jesse Novak). Jesse Novak also took first in the 50 free and Jason Tan touched first in the 100 free. With their only loss of the season to #1 ranked Christian Brothers Academy the boys have a great chance to repeat as state champs. Winter Track - The distance boys have been making an impact early on by earning medals at various Drew meets: 12/13/12 - O’Leary Invite: Jay Marion placed 3rd in the 1600, 4:55.61; 12/18/12 - DeSchriver Invite: Kyle Skelton, Brad Meixsell, Matt Leventhal and Mike Plaumbo placed 6th in the 4x800m relay with a 9:07.03; 12/21/12 - Passarelli Invite: 3rd place Kyle Skelton 4:49.15, 5th place Jay Marion 4:50.47, 6th place Brad Meixsell 4:50.50. 12/27/12 Counties @ Lehigh - Congratulations to Senior Nikki Chu who earned all the team points for the Bridgewater Girls. Nikki placed second overall in the 55m dash with a time of 7.68 and first in the 400m with a 1:03.43. Glen Boehme threw his personal best of 40-03.00 in the shot put, earning him a spot in finals. The 4x400 Team: Connor Hennessey, Mayank Kapoor, Mike Palumbo, and Matt McGettrick placed 5th with a time of 3:44.97. Running the 1200 was Allison Morgan, 400 Nikki Chu, 800 Jacqueline Diaz, 1600 Marisa Ruskan. They ran a 12:43.85, just seconds off their time from last year and after having to replace graduates Merri Steinmetz and Grace Ruffa.

Graphic Communications students Sergio Rivera of Raritan and Alexis Varga of Middlebush show off their t shirt design and Spirit of the Season Award. When Jeanene Leppert, a Special Projects Manager at Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ), contacted the Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School Graphic Communications Program looking for a new design for their 4th Annual Jingle All The Way 3K Road Race & Fun Run, the students quickly jumped into action. Lead by students Alexis Varga of Middlebush and Sergio Rivera of Raritan, and with the help of Alyson Coletta of Green Brook and Kalen Whitney of Neshanic Station, they took on the project from start to finish. The students were in charge of everything from design creation to gaining approval from SONJ, so that they would have a clean professional image to use for their event. After lots of hard work the design was finally approved, and over 500 t-shirts were created to be distributed to the 3K run participants. Jeanene Leppert and Special Olympics New Jersey were so thrilled that they then presented a Spirit of the Season Award to the SCVTHS Graphic Communications students involved in the project. Graphic Communications Instructor Linda Weber-Smith was delighted with the community service project stating, “With the addition of the Paw Prints shop into our program, the students are acting as liaisons to outside organizations, giving them the chance to expand their communications skills and work on real world projects.” Next year, because of the overwhelming success, SONJ will be hosting three different 3K runs across the state of New Jersey. The Graphic Communications Program at SCVTHS is already scheduled to help design the t-shirts for those events as well.
