King’s Tacos has collected roughly five tons of food AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com

Karen told Metroland they will still accept donations while they continue to work out logistics. According to its Facebook page, King’s Tacos has been accepting the following: rice, canned tuna, oil, pastas, sugar, coffee, water, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, baby supplies, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, first aid kits and more. Donations can be dropped off at the restaurant at 1190 St. Clair Ave. W.

lot of people that know us and trust us." Javier said he was surprised by the amount of people who came to donate. "I thought we’re going to use that corner (of the restaurant) for the items, like a very small

space to put a few boxes of items," he said. "I didn’t release I had to put my truck in front of the place and fill it every day." Currently, the brother and sister duo are working out logistics to privately ship the goods to a small Mexican town

that hasn’t received much help, which could take a few weeks. "Probably a month after (a disaster), people start to forget," Karen said. "People don’t have a house yet, they’re still hungry, they’re still sleeping in the street and who’s going to

look after those people? Even though it’s taking longer, I think it’s going to be helpful anyway for those that think they were forgotten." To stay up-to-date, visit www.facebook.com/kings.tacos.

avier and Karen Aragon were shocked when they kept hearing about devastating earthquakes rocking their home country, Mexico, in September. "Think about all those people that lost everything," Javier, 27, said. "Many people lost their families." On Sept. 19, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocked central Mexico, killing close to 400 people, destroying many buildings and leaving thousands homeless. Karen, 33, told Metroland Media Toronto they have family and friends who work and study in Mexico City, which was seriously impacted by the quake. "We were trying to contact them and they were not answering," she said. "It was like three or four hours of suspense." Eventually, they responded saying they were OK, but they were evacuated from their homes. That earthquake struck on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 quake that killed thousands of people. Earlier in the month, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake shook Mexico’s southern coast, killing more than 100 people. On Sept. 23, another quake rattled the same region. After the Sept. 19 disaster, the Aragon’s decided to take action. "I went to my sister’s office and started to talk about it (helping out)," Javier said. "I told her I really want to and we can do it together and let’s see what we can do." So they started to collect non-perishable food items at their family’s restaurant, King’s Tacos, located at St. Clair Avenue West and Dufferin Street. Using their Facebook page as a communication tool, over the span of a few days, donations started to roll in. Since then, they’ve collected roughly fivetons worth of items, Karen said. "The main idea was to taken advantage of the place," she said. "We know here, there’s a

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com "Bits and pieces." Despite its iconic status among Canadian boxing aficionados, that’s all Toronto-born boxing legend George Chuvalo remembers of his epic, 15-round brawl against Muhammad Ali back on March 29, 1966 before a hometown crowd at Maple Leaf Gardens. "Fighting Ali here in Toronto was the biggest fight of my career. It’s something that I’ll always remember; something I’ll always value," said Chuvalo, 80, in an interview last week following a Heritage Toronto presentation commemorating his historic world heavyweight championship loss to "The Greatest" more than 51 years ago. "But when people ask me about what I remember, I say the same thing I have with all my other fights: I remember bits and pieces. You don’t remember the whole fight, you just remember the bits and pieces." Lucky for Chuvalo, a new commemorative plaque soon to be installed on Ossington Avenue

will help further cement the momentousness of the fight in not just his memory, but in Toronto’s history. Set to be placed outside the former site of Earl "Sully" Sullivan’s Toronto Athletic Club - the local boxing institution where Ali trained for the Chuvalo match the plaque at 109 Ossington Ave. will not just pay tribute to the fight itself, but will recall the circumstances that brought the bout to Toronto in the first place, said Ellen Scheinberg of Heritage Toronto. The fight, she explained, came at a pivotal point in Ali’s career when his controversial support of The Nation of Islam and his opposition to the Vietnam War had him effectively banned from fighting in the United States. "Ali risked his career and his freedom fighting for his cause - a cause that parallels the fight that’s going on today with the peaceful protestors among athletes who are taking a knee," she said, noting that while Ali was originally supposed to fight American boxer Ernie Terrell for the world heavyweight title in ’66, no American city would agree to

when perhaps the most remarkable athlete in the modern world a black man despised for speaking his mind, despised for his religion and his anti-war views - was boycotted by every other city, he was welcomed here in Toronto," Winsor said. "It is, I hope, a mark of the tolerance and generosity of this city, and that’s why we want to remember this moment from our past." The plaque will also serve as inspiration for a generation of young boxers looking to follow in Ali and Chuvalo’s footsteps - boxers like 18-year-old Graeme Matthews, a junior welterweight who now trains out of the relocated Sully’s Boxing and Athletic Club on Dupont Street. "It’s an honour to train there," the aspiring 2020 Olympian said of boxing out of the same club Ali trained for his 1966 Toronto bout. "We have all these photos up on the walls at the gym and pieces of memorabilia all around. We even have Muhammad Ali’s speed bag and I get to hit that every once in a while, so it’s really inspiring to know that the Great One hit the same bag."

"It was because of his activism, his boxing prowess and his charisma, that Ali became a great international icon." That sentiment was echoed by

Shawn Winsor of the Ossington Community Association, whose members spearheaded the "twoyear journey" to establish the heritage plaque commemorating the fight. "Toronto can be proud that

Bloor bike lanes a roadmap for cycling infrastructure What’s the problem between bikes and cars? For years, all we seem to have been able to do is guess, and those guesses have been informed largely by where we’re sitting: on the saddle of a mountain bike, or in the seat of an automobile. If the former, we guess the problem is the proximity to cars and the inattention of their operators; the lack of space and infrastructure on city streets to limit that proximity and maintain safety. If we’re in a car, we see cyclists as contributing to congestion, darting through traffic - trying to claim precious road space for no good reason. Last week, Toronto Transportation staff took a lot of the guesswork out of the equation, releasing an extensive report on the year-long pilot project on the Bloor Street bike lane project. The lanes, which run 2.4 kilometres from Shaw Street to Avenue Road, were subject to intense scrutiny over that time, with some key questions posed: did they in fact increase the number of cyclists? Did they unduly impact other traffic? Did the loss of the parking that was displaced by the bike lanes harm local businesses? Did they improve safety? Now we have some answers. The bike lanes have led to an increase in cyclists: Bloor is now the second-most popular cycling route in Toronto. The lanes have slowed car traffic through the neighbourhood. But local businesses didn’t suffer; indeed, businesses saw a small increase in customers with the bike lanes, and the city has plans to improve movement through other adjustments. And perhaps most importantly, things got a lot safer: there was a reduction of 44 per cent in car/bicycle interactions with the introduction of fully separated bike lanes. Toronto council will be using that report to decide in November whether to make the bike lanes permanent, but it’s a good bet that they will follow staff recommendations and do so, as Mayor John Tory has already signalled he’ll support the permanent lanes. The question then will become, what to do with the example of Bloor Street? The narrow, busy stretch of roadway represents one of the larger challenges when it comes to placing cycling infrastructure. If bike lanes were, as their critics have alleged, going to fail, then surely they would have failed spectacularly on Bloor. The success of those bike lanes should spur council to support even more of them: along Bloor, along Danforth, and even beyond the downtown in Scarborough and Etobicoke and North York. Because we now know: if there is a problem between bicycles and cars, bike lanes are a great solution.

Suburban councillors lead by delaying For some Toronto politicians, kicking a problem down the road instead of facing it is a good strategy. Soon, you’ll see them try it again. Rooming houses, any rooming house, are illegal in Scarborough, North York and north Etobicoke. The city is proposing licensing them in parts of those neighborhoods - providing a legal, low-cost option for housing tenants elsewhere in Toronto already have. Local councillors know their residents - at least those whose faces they see at public meetings - hate the idea. But those councillors suspect they can’t win if this goes to court. As Chin Lee from Scarborough put it recently, there’s a housing

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto shortage and housing could be considered a human right. Such councillors have delayed legalizing rooming houses in the suburbs. They delayed throughout the last term of council, and most of this one. Chances are, when the current proposal finally reaches Toronto Council this fall, these councillors will insist more consulta-

tions are needed - again. Lee and others blame neighbourhood problems on rooming house tenants. "I do know of many who drive BMWs, Porshes, but they’re not willing to spend money on housing," he told constituents at a meeting. after encouraging them to speak against the proposal at council’s Executive Committee. Kenneth Hale of the Advocacy Centre for Tenants believes some of these local politicians are exploiting fear. Rooming houses are something they can take a ferocious stand on, he says. But while rallying their anxious homeowners, they aren’t offering up other solutions for affordable housing in neighborhoods where it’s badly needed, or suggesting where thousands of students enrolled at the city’s

fastest-growing post-secondary institutions can live nearby. It was the province which finally made basement apartments legal in all parts of this city. If it’s clear suburban rooming houses are stuck in a "consultation loop," says Hale, ACTO will push to have a Ontario Municipal Board hearing, arguing outlawing rooming houses in North York, Scarborough or Etobicoke infringes on Ontario’s Human Rights Code and Canada’s Charter. The OMB can end up writing a rooming house bylaw for the whole city, Hale says, and chances are nobody’s going to like it. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Get your pumpkins at Sorauren Park A pumpkin sale will happen in a west-end Toronto park on Saturday, Oct. 21. Friends of Sorauren Park will hold its annual Pumpkin Sale Fundraiser from 9 a.m. to noon at Sorauren Town Square at Wabash and Sorauren avenues. According to organizers, 100 per cent of the pumpkin sales will go toward supporting the Friends of Sorauren Park, a nonprofit volunteer-run community-based organization dedicated to supporting the park and free park programming. For more information, visit www.soraurenpark.wordpress.com CHARACTER STUDY Toronto city planners will be looking for the community’s input regarding their area-based character study of the

High Park North neighbourhood. Feedback can be given at a community meeting that will be held in the auditorium at Humberside Collegiate Institute at 280 Quebec Ave., near Annette Street, from 7 to 9 p.m. The study is part of a set of recommendations from city staff relating to a series of proposed highrise rental developments slated for the area. Staff recommended that the study for the apartment neighbourhoods located north of Bloor Street West, west of Keele Street, south of Glenlake Avenue and east of Gothic Avenue be undertaken. NEW YORK PORK A community meeting has been planned to discuss an application that will redevelop the vacant lands which slaughter-

house New York Pork once called home. An 11-storey condo is proposed for the site, at St. Clair Avenue West and Symes Road, between Weston Road and Jane Street. Kingcrest Investments Ltd. is proposing to build 267 condo units, of which 47 per cent would be onebedroom and 45 per cent would be two-bedroom. Currently, the proposed development does not comply with city zoning permissions related to the density, building height and side yard setbacks proposed, a preliminary city planning report states. The land is currently zoned industrial. The meeting will take place on Oct. 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Harwood Public School at 50 Leigh St.

BROCKTON VILLAGE

PARKDALE

Brockton Village is a section of west downtown Toronto that is north of the rail lines between Dufferin and Lansdowne and south of Bloor St. Many of the homes in this area are Victorian semi-detached, or row houses. The homes are narrow and feature front porches with steps that lead down to gardens. Laneways at the back of the houses lead to parking. Expect to find great shopping and Portuguese restaurants on Dundas St. W. and College St. Locals also visit Bloordale Village and the Dufferin Mall to shop.

Being an entrepreneur means that you’ll often figure things out as you go along, without guidance or an established structure to help you navigate. Though it is one of the most exhilarating aspects of the job, it can also be daunting, especially when you’re first starting out. Dan Kelly, CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, offers his top three tips for small business owners. 1. Make mistakes and pivot often. Regularly ask yourself: “Did I meet my business goals today?” and identify some key performance indicators. This will allow you to continue doing what works, or troubleshoot problems quickly by pivoting your strategy with minimal repercussions.

BROCKTON VILLAGE’S HISTORY:

4 Garden Avenue

insidetoronto.com

Spectacular Victorian with high ceilings and exposed brick. 2 1/2- storey semi with 3 bedrooms and den. Finished basement with separate entrance. Detached garage for 1 car. Totally renovated and truly a gorgeous home.

BOSLEY REAL ESTATE LTD,. BROKERAGE

In the 1800s, Captain James Brock owned a section of land in the area which would eventually be named after him. Brock was the cousin of a Canadian War of 1812 hero, Sir Issac Brock. In the 1840s, Irish immigrants settled in Brockton. The town featured two rope making factories and Brockton Hotel (City of Toronto Archives) locals also relied on agriculture to generate income. In 1881, Brockton became a village, but it wasn’t long before the area was in debt. To become financially stable, the residents voted to amalgamate with Toronto. The change was official in 1884. Today, the old town hall is still around, but is now used commercially.

2. Know your customers. Building strong relationships with your customers takes time, but if you treat them right and do what’s best for them in the longterm, you’ll have a better chance at winning and retaining their business. It’s also a good idea to find out where your customers are spending time online or on social media and to communicate with them there. 3. Build a support network. Set yourself up for success by joining a community of other small businesses where you can gain access to invaluable industry resources. CFIB provides specialized business resources and makes sure the voice of independent businesses is heard on government issues that are important to your business. www.newscanada.com
